As interacções intermoleculares desempenham um papel essencial nos diversos processos biológicos, sendo fundamental a compreensão destas interacções nos Sectores das Indústrias Farmacêuticas e de Alimentos Funcionais. Os cogumelos representam uma fonte ilimitada de compostos com propriedades antitumorais e imunoestimulantes, e o seu consumo foi já relacionado com a redução do risco de cancro da mama. No presente trabalho, foram desenvolvidos dois estudos in silico com o intuito de melhor compreender quais os mecanismos moleculares responsáveis por diferentes propriedades bioactivas dos cogumelos. Primeiro utilizou-se uma metodologia de modelação QCAR (Relações Quantitativas Composição – Actividade) para estudar e prever a actividade antioxidante de cogumelos. Num segundo estudo utilizaram-se ferramentas de “docking” molecular e “virtual ligand screening” (VLS) para tentar elucidar possíveis mecanismos de actividade dos cogumelos contra o cancro da mama. No estudo QCAR inicial foi utilizada a técnica estatística dos Mínimos Quadrados Parciais (PLS) para avaliar a relação entre o potencial antioxidante (efeitos bloqueadores de radicais livres e poder redutor) e a composição química de vinte e três amostras de dezassete espécies de cogumelos silvestres Portugueses. However, the crustacean shellfish by-products contain several compounds that can be processed to yield chitin which has a myriad of industrial and biotechnological applications. The swimming crab, Polybius henslowii, despite being an extremely abundant marine resource, it is not presently subject to commercial use. Given the negative impact on the fishing nets fisherman´s see this marine resource as a plague and not as a potential source of economic incomes. Various strains of oleaginous microorganisms, mainly fungi and yeast, have been widely used for the production of single cell oil (SCO) rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids or having an exceptional triacylglycerol structure. Difficulties for industrial scale production are related to the high cost of fermentation and oil extraction. The quantity of oil accumulated per unit of dry cellular mass is a critical factor that influences the final cost of SCO. The economics of these bioprocess become more favourable when zero or negative value waste substrates are utilized as carbon or nitrogen sources. Although utilisation of crude glycerol in the fermentation medium without prior purification offers a remarkable advantage against the traditional use of pure glycerol as substrate only few reports have appeared in the literature on the use of this substrate as sole carbon sources. The management of municipal solid wastes (MSW) is currently a problem that requires to be jointly addressed in different ways, to ensure a sustainable development. In order to optimise the management of MSW it is necessary to adopt simultaneously various solutions. Accordingly, incineration has been considered as the main solution for MSW final treatment, due to its efficiency in the reduction of the weight and volume. However, prior to incineration, all the recycable components ought to be separated. After, it is of utmost importance to find solutions for the final incineration waste; in such a manner that landfill disposal is minimised. This reasoning was the basis for the present work, which aims at finding a valorisation of the fly ashes resulting from the Energy Recovery Plant - Lipor II, by incorporating them in cement mortars, to evaluate their possible utilisation in building construction. The incorporation of the ashes took place in two ways, replacing either a certain percentage of cement or a certain percentage of sand. The specimens produced were submitted to flexure and compression tests as well as leaching tests. The invention deals with a process used for Cheese whey treatment and valorisation. The plant where this process is applied includes three main components - an ultrafiltration unit, a bioreactor and a destillation unit. Final products of this process are a whey protein concentrate and ethanol. Ultrafiltration and distillation units are similar to the ones being used in other cheese whey treatment plants. The innovative characteristics of this process lie on the design of the bioreactor and its operation mode and on the microorganism being used. The bioreactor, with a total volume of 1000 litters at the installed scale, is a concentric tube internal loop air-lift bioreactor with a degassing zone at the top; the mode of operation is continuous; the lactose fermenting used yeast strain has the ability to form flocs. By using a flocculating yeast strain and operating the bioreactor continuously a higher productivity in lactose conversion to ethanol may be achieved with a simultaneous reduction in the volume of residual solids. This process allows for a 90% reduction in the pollution caused by cheese whey disposal. The innovative character of this invention lies on the use a continuously operating bioreactor with a new design. The integration of the fermentation unit in the overall cheese whey treatment and valorisation process forces the extension of the request for protection of the patent to the entire process.

The use of industrial wastes for wastewater treatment as a strategy to their re-use and valorisation may provide important advances toward sustainability. The present work gives new insights into heavy metal biosorption onto low-cost biosorbents, studying chromium(III) biosorption onto spent grains residual from a Portuguese brewing industry both in batch and expanded bed column systems. Experimental studies involved unmodified spent grains and spent grains treated with NaOH. Metal uptake followed a rapid initial step, well described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model up to 27 h, indicating chemisorption to be the rate-limiting step. Beyond this period intraparticle diffusion assumed an important role in the uptake global kinetics. The best fit for equilibrium data was obtained using the Langmuir model, with unmodified spent grains having the higher maximum uptake capacity (q max = 16.7 mg g1). In open system studies, using expanded bed columns, the best performance was also achieved with unmodified spent grains: Breakthrough time (C/C i = 0.25) and total saturation time (C/C i = 0.99) occurred after 58 and 199 h of operation, corresponding to the accumulation of 390 mg of chromium(III), 43.3 % of the total amount entering the column. These results suggest that alkali treatment does not improve spent grains uptake performance. Changes in biomass composition determined by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy suggested hydroxyl groups and proteins to have an important role in chromium(III) biosorption. This study points out that unmodified spent grains can be successfully used as low-cost biosorbent for trivalent chromium.

The objective of this article is to present a proposal (working paper) for a quantitative analysis tool to help technology transfer offices (TTOs) improve their structures, processes and procedures. Our research started from the study of internal practices and structures that facilitate the interaction between R&D institutions, their TTOs and regional surroundings. We wanted to identify “bottlenecks” in those processes, procedures, and structures. We mapped the bottlenecks in a set of “facilitators” collected from observed best practices in select European and North American R&D institutions. One of the most important aspects of our research is the use of facilitators and rules integrated in a management framework called “Master Plan to Transfer Technology”. This is a compilation of 271 rules referring to 43 facilitators distributed in seven groups that explain the actual best practices inside (and around) a TTO. The facilitators and rules are the output of the coding process step in grounded theory, where facilitators are the categories and rules are their properties. Le Patrimoine Culturel immatériel (PCI) doit être compris comme un réflexe de la diversité culturelle des communautés, des peuples et des nations et, naturellement, ce patrimoine «joue un rôle essentiel dans la construction des identités, des cultures et des imaginaires». Devant les effets négatifs liés à la mondialisation qui causent la perte progressive de ce patrimoine, due a la dissolution des lieux et lien de mémoire, il faut prendre des mesures qui visent la protection et promotion de la culture (matérielle et immatérielle) dans défense de leur diversité. Dans les objectifs inhérents au projet MEDINS L’Université d’Évora a développé un ensemble d’études autour du PCI dans la Région de l’Alentejo et a partir de l’analyse de la documentation officielle concernant la politique de développement pour la Région de l’Alentejo dans l’avenir 2007-2013, sont présentés quelques orientations concernant la définition d’une stratégie de valorisation et protection du PCI à introduire au sein d’une politique plus élargie de développement du territoire.

Neste contexto, o nosso objetivo é conhecer e analisar o conjunto das atividades desenvolvidas pelos docentes dos institutos superiores politécnicos portugueses no âmbito da sua prática profissional, em especial no que se refere ao seu envolvimento em atividades de investigação e de transferência e valorização económica do conhecimento. Para o efeito, recorreu-se à aplicação de um inquérito por questionário, de administração direta em modalidade online, aos docentes dos quinze politécnicos nacionais públicos, tendo sido obtida uma taxa de resposta que ronda os 12% da população. Production and characterisation of amorphous silica from rice husk waste

Rice covers about 1% of the earth’s surface. Rice husk is the major by-product of the riceprocessing industries which must be appropriately managed. On average 20% of the rice paddy is husk. The major constituents of rice husk are cellulose, lignin and silica. During growth, rice plants absorb silica and other minerals from the soil and accumulate it into their structures. Its composition varies with the diversity, climate and geographic location of growth. The high grade of silica in the husk opens a possibility for its valorisation. Through thermal treatment by calcination, with or without energy recovery, the ash obtained is constituted by amorphous silica with high porosity having potential application as ligand in construction materials, catalyst support, metals adsorbent, insulation or ceramics, among others. In the research developed, the rice husk was processed by washing, acid leaching and calcination in order to produce an ash, which was characterized aiming at assessing possible valorising solutions. In the industrial production of rice, large quantities of rice husk are generated constituting a residue with costs for the companies, which must be appropriately managed. The high grade of silica in the rice husk opens a possibility for its valorisation, through the production of amorphous silica with high porosity and potential application as ligand in construction materials, as catalyst support, as metals adsorbent, among others. In this research work a process was developed for the production of silica with amorphous properties from rice husk waste, and the products formed were characterised. The process involved three main operations: water washing for removal of some impurities, acid leaching with HCl or H2SO4 solutions for dissolution of contaminating metals and incineration for organics decomposition. The washing operation let a partial purification of the husk, allowing removal of 46-60% of contaminating metals such as K, Fe Mn and Zn. The leaching with 0.4M HCl and 0.2M H2SO4 allowed obtaining high metals removal efficiency, namely >99% for potassium, 85-90% for iron, >96% for manganese and >80% for zinc. The final composition of the leached husk was 0.003-0.006% K, 0.016-0.025% Fe, <0.001% Mn and <0.0007% Zn. The incineration of the rice husk after previous purification was performed at 540ºC...

Food production results in the generation of residues at different step of the production chain. A great part of the residues is generated at the agricultural part of the process. Although some of these residues may have already an application as for example feed or bedding, however more energetically and economically efficient use is desirable. Especially that this kind of residues are low-cost bulky feedstock and renewable carbon source, which can be processed and valorised to produce fine chemicals and bio-based commodities fulfilling the requirement of biorefinery concept. However, considering the globally occurring changes, the valorisation of residues made in the frame of biorefinery concept must be done in the green fashion. This way the broadly understood sustainability and bio-based economy requirements can be satisfy. This work will show some examples of valorisation of food production chain residues using greener methods. The aim of this work is to demonstrate the diverse application methods of ionic liquids and high density fluids in direct integrated valorisation of biomass towards value-added chemicals.

Green Chemistry and Biorefinery concepts are two approaches helping to develop new and more sustainable processes.The implementation of both methodologies impels to fossil-independent future with bioeconomy based on natural feedstock like biowaste and industrial by-products. The development of technologies for valorisation of these resources is a key role of society in the creation of sustainable and more environmentally friendly future. Shortly after the Rio Declaration on Environment and Development, Anastas and Warner presented 12 Principles of Green Chemistry but more a decade before Trevor Kletz in his Jubilee lecture entitled “What you don’t have, can’t leak” draw the frames in which scientific and industrial work should be performed. This basis of green chemistry created a fundament for further development and implementation of Anastas and Warner principles of green chemistry. This paper aims to investigate the interrelation between sea, tourism and culture associated with underwater archaeological heritage. Its main objective is to determine the existence of creative actions and projects that valorise tourism related with underwater archaeological heritage in the Algarve. The assumption is that underwater heritage is a valuable resource to tourism economy of seaside territories. Regarding the Algarve, WTTC (2003) refers that “the Travel & Tourism industry directly contributes 45% of GDP and 37% of jobs”. However, as is also refereed in this document “forecasts for the next ten years (2013) are very modest”. This means that, unless Algarve Tourism (Turismo do Algarve) and the private sector succeed in changing direction and surpassing the baseline forecasts, the share of visitor exports in the scheme of total exports will fall. As MEID/TP (2011) and Governo de Portugal (2013) point out for the Algarve region, the Sun and Sea, as well as Golf, are considered to be the main strategic products. The core Sun and Sea product should have a multi-segmented offer and be able to widen the summer season. In this context, it is important to develop new tourism products related with sea, nautical and cultural tourism. The present paper is based on a documental research of tourism public policies and also on a set of interviews of entities connected with underwater archaeological heritage with the intention of determining their role in the valorisation of this type of heritage in the Algarve.

Alors que la plupart des théories libérales ont mis l’accent sur les principes de justice, et sur une conception de la justice qui nous fait penser la société et les relations individuelles de manière de plus en plus abstraite, les réflexions sur le respect de soi nous portent plutôt vers ce qui est essentiel à la valeur et l’importance de l’identité des personnes et de leurs relations sociales. Ces réflexions nous révèlent que non seulement les principes de justice ne sont pas la seule source de respect, mais que tant les cultures et les religions que les communautés morales et les groupes compréhensifs ont des rôles fondamentaux pour le niveau de respect de soi et de respect mutuel que les individus éprouvent envers eux-mêmes et envers les autres. Si les projets de vie, les valeurs et les croyances des individus sont révélés comme fondamentaux à leur autonomie et leur vie comme individu, les réflexions sur le multiculturalisme et le pluralisme révèlent les difficultés de notre temps : comment une société peut-elle promouvoir le respect de soi des individus dans un tel contexte de diversité morale, compréhensive, religieuse, etc.? Ce mémoire examine plusieurs questions d'éthique auxquelles font face les chercheurs universitaires en ce qui concerne la valorisation (le partage, la réutilisation et la commercialisation) des bases de données et des banques de matériel. Dans un premier temps, nous présentons les résultats d'une étude qualitative du point de vue de vingt deux chercheurs à l'Université de Montréal, qui révèle les nombreuses limitations à la valorisation, y compris le manque de ressources, le consentement à la recherche, la confidentialité des participants ou patients et la compétition entre chercheurs. Malgré ces limitations, le partage de bases et de banques est la forme de valorisation la plus acceptée par les chercheurs à l’Université de Montréal. De plus, ce partage est préconisé dans la documentation scientifique comme un idéal de la science. Dans un deuxième temps, nous démontrons que si le partage de bases et de banques est primae facie une norme éthique généralement acceptée, les limitations à cette norme devraient être davantage comprises et justifiées. Pour ce faire, nous présentons une analyse des limitations principales du partage des bases et des banques qui révèle que la plupart de ces limitations sont causées par des manquements à l’intégrité de la recherche (manque de collégialité ou de confiance). Ce travail concerne la valorisation des résultats de la recherche universitaire. Il s'agit d'une terminologie qui concerne le processus ainsi que l'infrastructure - les bureaux de valorisation - permettant à un chercheur académique de commercialiser les résultats de sa recherche. Une étude de cas comparant la Belgique et le Québec dans ce domaine se trouvera au centre des réflexions. L'accent sera tout d'abord mis sur le cadre théorique permettant de comprendre l'origine et le sens de l'activité de valorisation. Différents concepts comme l'innovation et l'économie du savoir devront alors être introduits, notamment dans une perspective historique et normative. De plus, différents modèles théoriques se succèderont ; ce qui permettra au lecteur d'acquérir une vision complète du domaine étudié. La problématique qui anime ensuite la recherche est centrée sur les relations qui existent entre les bureaux de valorisation et les chercheurs universitaires qui font appel à leurs services et à l'impact de ces relations sur le processus de valorisation. Les différentes hypothèses proposées suggèrent l'importance des politiques universitaires de propriété intellectuelle ainsi que celle de la culture universitaire de la recherche académique. Ces différents points sont analysés au regard des entretiens semi-directifs effectués. 10 pages, 2 tables, 2 figures.; Olive mill wastes represent an important environmental problem in Mediterranean areas where they are generated in huge quantities in short periods of time. Their high phenol, lipid and organic acid concentrations turn them into phytotoxic materials, but these wastes also contain valuable resources such as a large proportion of organic matter and a wide range of nutrients that could be recycled. In this article, recent research studies for the valorisation of olive mill wastes performed by several authors were reviewed: second oil extraction, combustion, gasification, anaerobic digestion, composting and solid fermentation are some of the methods proposed. Special attention was paid to the new solid waste generated during the extraction of olive oil by the two-phase system. The peculiar physicochemical properties of the new solid waste, called two-phase olive mill waste, caused specific management problems in the olive mills that have led to the adaptation and transformation of the traditional valorisation strategies. The selection of the most suitable or appropriate valorisation strategy will depend on the social, agricultural or industrial environment of the olive mill. No âmbito da semiótica dita tensiva, os valores de universo resultam na valorização da participação, da expansão, do numeroso, e são regidos pelas operações de mistura e abertura; os de absoluto dizem respeito a uma valorização do raro, do exclusivo, do puro, e são regidos pelas operações de triagem e fechamento. Nosso objetivo é identificar quais valores propõem os metapoemas estudados.; Dans le cadre de la sémiotique dite tensive, les valeurs d’univers ont pour résultat la valorisation de la participation, de l’expansion, du nombreux, et résultent des opérations de mélange et d’ouverture. Les valeurs d’absolu, elles, aboutissent à la valorisation du rare, voire de l’exclusif et du pur, manifestant les opérations de tri et de fermeture. La présente étude se propose de mettre en évidence les valeurs présentées sous cet aspect par les poèmes analysés.
