In recent years, there has been the need to reorganize the curriculum of undergraduate courses in the health science field in order to educate professionals to be able to practice the principles of the Brazilian Unified Health System from the perspective of integrality. From a qualitative research perspective, this study aimed to identify the perceptions and opinions of physical therapy undergraduate students regarding comprehensive health care and about the principle of comprehensive health care in their education. Three focus groups were conducted with students in their senior year of the undergraduate course in physical therapy enrolled in three universities in the Federal District. After analyzing the content, results show that despite government efforts and changes in the curriculum proposals, it was observed that undergraduate education in physical therapy still does not favor the Brazilian Unified Health System and its guiding principles, in particular comprehensive health care. It is necessary to invest in reflective spaces that articulate university (faculty and students), health services, management authorities, municipal policies and social movements in order to yield new teaching and learning possibilities that will contribute to the transformation of the university education aimed at the Brazilian Health System.

For over 20 years, the Division of Undergraduate Education (DUE) at the National Science Foundation (NSF) has been supporting undergraduate curricula in the sciences, including neuroscience. NSF’s priorities in undergraduate education, however, have evolved during that period, and the competition for grants has increased. This history and overview of the current Course, Curriculum and Laboratory Improvement program (CCLI) illustrates the changing philosophy of DUE with regard to its curricular programs. It is hoped that understanding the current emphasis on assessing the outcomes of curricular changes and disseminating their results will help interested science faculty write better proposals and compete more effectively for funds.

The education of undergraduate college students in the field of public health has burgeoned over the past decade. Professional literature in peer-reviewed journals is one indicator of the status of a field of study and its related body of knowledge. It is also a mechanism for sharing information among professionals about challenges, issues, experiences, and best practices. The purpose of the literature review conducted here was to describe the status of the peer-reviewed literature over the past decade pertaining to the education of undergraduates about the field of public health in the United States (U.S.). A literature search was conducted of three databases: PubMed, Scopus, and ERIC. Inclusion criteria were publication date from January 1, 2004 through July 31, 2014; written in the English language; pertaining to undergraduate education in the U.S.; and a focus on public health as the primary discipline. Public health was searched as an overarching discipline; articles focused on sub-disciplines or other health professions disciplines were excluded. The search resulted in 158 articles. Each of the authors reviewed the abstracts for all articles and read full articles when necessary. The result was 23 articles that were then considered in depth. The articles were categorized according to their primary theme: curriculum...

This research has aimed to analyze the presence of the Work and Organizational Psychology (WOP) at the psychologist s undergraduate education after 2004 s National Curricular Guidelines in Brazil. It has investigated in 43 Brazilian undergraduate courses of Psychology how their Course Pedagogical Projects (CPPs) approach the WOP issues. For that investigation, the CPPs, the subjects programmes related to the WOP and the curriculum grid have been accurately read and analyzed. Categories created by similar studies have also been used. The studied knowledge field has been cited by 41 courses, mainly on the definition of the egress s professional profile, on the expected competences and on the psychologist s formation process lines. Moreover, 28 courses have disposed curricular emphasis on the WOP and 12 have provided professional practices on that Psychology s field. All the courses have displayed, at least, one subject related to the WOP and in 29 cases there have been found between two and six subjects concerned to that field of Psychology, occupying nearby 10% of the whole courses credit hours. It has been verified that the Work and Organizational Psychology is allied to discussions about Quality of Life and Health of the Worker...

The undergraduate courses in Psychology have been historically pointed as defective in aspects related to the critical education and the integration between theory and practice. Hence, the scientific education has been considered a possibility to overcome those lacks. Therefore, this study has investigated the undergraduate education process of Psychology students with PIBIC (Portuguese acronym for Undergraduate Scientific Research Scholarships Institutional Program) scholarships from CNPq (Portuguese acronym Brazilian National Council of Scientific and Technological Development). The scholarship program has been a strategic tool for the undergraduate scientific research. Electronic questionnaires have been sent to all the PIBIC scholarship students of Psychology in Brazil (622; 104 have answered), containing questions about the program developed activities, tutoring and advising, PIBIC evaluation and other ones. The students scientific and academic production has also been investigated through their Lattes (CNPq s Platform in which researchers have their academic résumés). The major part of the participants (70%) has stated that the first motivation to be in the program had been their interest in the research or in the academic career. Furthermore...

Hypothesis: Surgical undergraduate education in a rural setting is feasible and sound in terms of educational outcomes. Design: The final-year surgical curriculum at the University of Adelaide, Adelaide, South Australia, was restructured to include the option of a rural surgical term. Setting: Five provincial center hospitals in rural South Australia. Interventions: Forty-three final-year medical students undertook rural surgical clerkships in 1998. Main Outcome Measures: End-of-year results and subjective ward assessments were compared between the group of students who completed rural surgical terms and the remainder of the student group who participated in tertiary hospital-based electives. Subjective student feedback was obtained in a survey conducted by the Clinical Education Development Unit at the University of Adelaide. Results: No significant (P = .45) differences in examination results were noted between the rural and city groups. A significant (P<.01) finding was observed in the subjective assessments, indicating that it was more difficult for the rural group to obtain an A grade compared with the city group. The rural students ranked the level of teaching and supervision highly and enjoyed the overall rural experience. Conclusion: Surgical undergraduate education is practical in a rural setting and...

This paper provides a description of a pilot project in Tobacco Use Prevention and Cessation (TUPAC) in response to a national and international trend to include TUPAC curriculum components in the clinical education of undergraduate oral health students. In order to deliver quality brief intervention strategies for smokers a need to adequately prepare oral health students was identified during student clinical placements. An interprofessional (IP) project team was established with membership from the University of Adelaide’s School of Dentistry, QuitSA, Cancer Council SA, the South Australian Dental Service (SADS) Somerton Park and TAFESA’s Faculty of Dental Studies to streamline the efficient use of resources and most importantly draw on a diverse range of interprofessional health care expertise. On the website for The UK Centre for the Advancement of Interprofessional Education (CAIPE) (2002) it states that “Interprofessional education occurs when two or more professions learn from and about each other to improve collaboration and the quality of care”. Through interprofessional learning (IPL) in classroom and clinical settings, second year Bachelor and Advanced Diploma oral health students were provided with the opportunity to develop an understanding of the respective roles of each health professional responsible for delivering positive health initiatives in the area of TUPAC. With limited national oral health curricula in the area of TUPAC...

ED092047; Contained in this letter is a survey of Department of Defense full-time, fully funded graduate and undergraduate education programs for which over $170 million was spent in fiscal year 1973. Each military service has a program in which officers are selected to attend accredited civilian institutions or military-operated postgraduate schools as full-time students. The officers selected pursue courses lending to a master's or doctorate degree while receiving full pay and allowances, tuition, travel, books, and other related expenses. Although the overall ratio of officers with doctorates to validated positions did not appear to be excessive, there were imbalances in the ratios in certain disciplines. In conclusion the services are not adequately controlling participation in the graduate education programs. e.'he Army and Navy are permitting officers to enroll in disciplines having no validated requirements or in disciplines where there is a sufficient number of officers with advanced degrees already available. Statistical tables related to the text are included.

The program of liver transplantation can contribute in an excellent manner to undergraduate education on a daily basis, especially in the form of scientific initiation with studies of experimental investigation in the laboratory or as formal monitoring in experimental or clinical investigation. In the latter modality, the student helps his tutoring professor in activities more related to the ward and to the Surgical Center, with studies on the clinical follow-up of patients, or with case studies in both prospective and retrospective investigations. It is the task of the adviser to attribute balanced activities whose time of execution will not interfere with formal graduation hours. Similarly, it is the responsibility of the student to structure his free time in order to devote part of it to the exercise of scientific activity. On this basis, the medical student will have the opportunity to experience the most varied facets of transplantation, acquiring the necessary systemic view of the procedure as his knowledge expands. The importance of liver transplant is exactly this, i.e., to obtain a complete idea of the whole with daily contact along time starting from the complex parts that constitute the procedure, exposes the student to diverse clinical situations rarely encountered together in other specialties...

This article analyses the psychological concepts and practices of assistance relating to the learning problems taught in undergraduate courses of Psychology. 268 records of attendance were examined, focusing the following aspects: nature and profile of the school procedures, modes and conception of psychological assistance relating to the learning problems. One can verified that the interpretation clinical psychologists give to the school complaint reveals that they do not know the latest research related to the daily life of a school even when they criticize the quality of the public school.; Este artigo discute a formação de psicólogos diante dos problemas de aprendizagem, partindo da análise de concepções e práticas psicológicas de atendimento ensinadas em cursos de graduação em Psicologia.

In comparison to attention given to research methods for education students at postgraduate level, the offering of research methods for education students at undergraduate level is less often considered. Yet, it is agreed that research methods for undergraduate level students is important for shaping student attitudes, learning and achievement in the field of research. In concurrence with the aforementioned, this paper aimed to examine the views and experiences of a conveniently sampled group of 124 undergraduate South African student teachers of a compulsory course in research methods. By following a quantitative research design, the authors determined the sampled students' experiences of research methods, how they value them, and how they perceive the pedagogy, which in this particular instance was 'working-in-pairs', to teach research methods. For all three the mentioned facets, the findings reflected positive results. However, the research results also pointed to specific issues which might enrich the teaching and status of research methods for undergraduate level education students.

OBJECTIVE. The introduction of medical humanities (MH) in undergraduate medical education in Italy has been an issue of debate since the 90's and few years later it was extended to other healthcare degrees. The aims of this Italian literature review, after considering the international scene, are: to evaluate the extent to which the interest in this subject has gradually developed throughout the country; which professional groups have contributed to the debate; to identify which theoretical constructs led to the introduction of MH in undergraduate medical education; to identify whether a clear and shared definition of MH exists in Italian literature; to verify what kinds of MH experiences have been accomplished in Italy. MATERIALS AND METHODS. A comprehensive literature search was conducted, including electronic databases, bibliographies, manual sorting of articles in paper format, congress proceedings. RESULTS. The analysis of the chosen articles underlines that, however limited, Italian literature does not present a very different picture from the international scene. It emerges that teaching MH is believed to be an important feature in undergraduate education of healthcare professionals who intend to propose a bio-psychological-social approach to care...
