Red-cockaded woodpecker (RCW, Picoides borealis) populations are greatly affected by the fragmentation of forest habitat through the effect on dispersal between active clusters and the other suitable habitat. In order to assess the suitability of a given landscape structure for the maintenance and expansion of RCW populations, land managers need an index that correlates with the bird’s perception of that structure. Rather than assuming that the application of the most common landscape metrics will provide the necessary information, we applied three indices of functional heterogeneity (as opposed to measured heterogeneity) to a GIS coverage of the Raven District of the Sam Houston National Forest using two observable scales. The GIS coverage included information on habitat suitability and RCW cluster distribution and size. The analysis indicated that the presence of cavity trees is the most important factor for RCW population maintenance and that fragmentation of the foraging habitat has much less impact. The analysis also indicated that many areas currently of high functional importance for the RCW are effectively isolate from on another. This second result has significant implications for dispersal of individuals between areas of high functionality and this also the maintenance of RCW in this forest.

This dissertation aims at analysing the dramaturgical representation of family in the play A Lie of the Mind, by the North-American playwright Sam Shepard, and the means through which this representation, as developed in the text, brings forth elements of criticism to the dominant ideology related to the role of the family in the countrys socio-historical context. Formal aspects of the play will be approached...

This dissertation presents a study of narrative techniques such as indeterminacy (cf. ECO...

An attempt will be made to study the impacts of government policies on the distribution of income, paying close attention to the corresponding response of the different macroeconomic aggregates and balances. The Social Accounting Matrix (SAM) will be chosen as the working instrument. A numerical version of the SAM, constructed from the System of National Accounts (SNA), will serve as the basis for the construction of an algebraic version of the same matrix for Portugal. This methodological choice was linked to the fact that, underlying the SAM, there are interrelated subsystems that, in the numerical version of the matrix, provide an analytical picture of the circular flow or general equilibrium interactions of the market economy, when studied during a particular accounting period. On the other hand, in the algebraic version of the SAM, it is possible to measure and quantify the economy-wide effects of changes in the particular nominal flows represented by the numerical version (injections from and leakages into the system), which might be the result of policy measures. To this end, a computable (numerically solvable) general (economy-wide) equilibrium (macroeconomic balance) approach will be adopted. A SAM-based model will be constructed in perfect consonance with the SNA...

Policy analysis and policy making are parts of the policy decision process for which working tools are needed. A Social Accounting Matrix (SAM) consistent with the national accounts is presented at the level of a country, as a possible working tool intended to support that process. Such a framework will therefore consist of a SAM-based approach. On the one hand, it will involve the presentation of a numerical version of a SAM, constructed from national accounts adapted to the System of National Accounts (SNA). This numerical version will be shown as a device that makes it possible to take a snapshot of the reality under study. On the other hand, it will also involve the presentation of two algebraic versions, with which alternative scenarios will be defined for the measurement of policy impacts. One version will consist of accounting multipliers, and the other version will be a so-called master model. In the latter each cell will be defined with a linear equation or system of equations, whose components will be all the known and quantified transactions of the SNA, using the parameters deduced from the numerical SAM that served as the basis for this model. The national accounts will be adopted as the main source of information. The nominal flows that are representative of that part of a society’s activity that is measured by these accounts will be used to measure the network of linkages and interactions involving institutional sectors...

Identifying novel metabolites and characterizing their biological functions are major challenges of the post-genomic era. X-ray crystallography can reveal unanticipated ligands which persist through purification and crystallization. These adventitious protein:ligand complexes provide insights into new activities, pathways and regulatory mechanisms. We describe a new metabolite, carboxy-S-adenosylmethionine (Cx-SAM), its biosynthetic pathway and its role in tRNA modification. The structure of CmoA, a member of the SAM-dependent methyltransferase superfamily, revealed a ligand in the catalytic site consistent with Cx-SAM. Mechanistic analyses demonstrated an unprecedented role for prephenate as the carboxyl donor and the involvement of a unique ylide intermediate as the carboxyl acceptor in the CmoA-mediated conversion of SAM to Cx-SAM. A second member of the SAM-dependent methyltransferase superfamily, CmoB, recognizes Cx-SAM and acts as a carboxymethyltransferase to convert 5-hydroxyuridine (ho5U) into 5-oxyacetyl uridine (cmo5U) at the wobble position of multiple tRNAs in Gram negative bacteria1, resulting in expanded codon-recognition properties2,3. CmoA and CmoB represent the first documented synthase and transferase for Cx-SAM. These findings reveal new functional diversity in the SAM-dependent methyltransferase superfamily and expand the metabolic and biological contributions of SAM-based biochemistry. These discoveries highlight the value of structural genomics approaches for identifying ligands in the context of their physiologically relevant macromolecular binding partners and for aiding in functional assignment.

Letter from Sam Houston to Gen. Thomas J. Rusk expressing his frustration over what he believes was a disobedience of orders, resulting in a (city of) Houston massacre, dated Feb. 13, 1837. (3 pages); Sam Houston served as General of the Texan Army in 1836 and went on to serve two terms as President of the Republic of Texas. His first term lasted from October 22, 1836, to December 10, 1838. The town of Houston was founded in 1836, named in his honor, and served as the capital of the republic during most of his first administration. After leaving office because the Constitution of the Republic of Texas barred a president from succeeding himself, Houston served in the Texas House of Representatives as a congressman from San Augustine from 1839 to 1841. Houston succeeded Mirabeau B. Lamar to a second term as president from December 12, 1841, to December 9, 1844. When Texas joined the union, Houston became one of its two United States senators, along with Thomas Jefferson Rusk, serving in the U.S. Senate from February 21, 1846, until March 4, 1859. As a former graduate of the NPS, Admiral Chaplin has offered a unique and insightful perspective as the Superintendent of his alma mater by ensuring that we have well-prepared and well-educated Navy officers to meet the challenges of the 21st century. Admiral Chaplin has tirelessly promoted NPS graduates as an existing and available resource for the Navy. He has pushed to create these stronger ties by establishing meetings between the school deans and Navy commanders, as well as between his students and the fleets. This “technical to tactical” bridge, as Admiral Chaplin has titled it, has proven highly successful, and will benefit the Navy long afterhis departure. After two years of exemplary service = as the Superintendent of the Naval Postgraduate School, Admiral Robert C.
