Controlling the luminescence properties of poly(p-phenylene vinylene) entrapped in Langmuir and Langmuir-Blodgett films of stearic acid

Properties of hybrid films can be enhanced if their molecular architecture is controlled. In this paper, poly (p-phenylene vinylene) was mixed with stearic acid in order to form stable hybrid Langmuir monolayers. Surface properties of these films were investigated with measurements of surface pressure, and also with polarization modulation infrared reflection-absorption spectroscopy (PM-IRRAS). The films were transferred from the air-water interface to solid supports through the Langmuir-Blodgett technique, and the viability of the film as optical device was investigated with fluorescence spectroscopy. Comparing the fluorescent spectra for the polymer in solution, as a casting film, and as an LB film, the emission bands for LB films were narrower and appeared at lower wavelengths. The interactions between the film components and the design for the LB film may take advantage of the method to immobilize luminescent polymers in mixed ultrathin films adsorbed in solid matrices. The use of natural substances in health applications may be hampered by the difficulties in establishing the mechanisms of action, especially at molecular-level. The protein-polysaccharide complex extracted from the mushroom Agaricus blazei Murill, referred to as CAb, has been considered for treating various diseases with probable interaction with cell membranes. In this study, we investigate the interaction between CAb and a cell membrane model represented by a Langmuir monolayer of dimyristoyl phosphatidic acid (DMPA). CAb affects the structural properties of DMPA monolayers causing expansion and increasing compressibility. In addition, interaction with DMPA polar heads led to neutralization of the electrical double layer, yielding a zero surface potential at large areas per molecule. CAb remained at the interface even at high surface pressures, which allowed transfer of Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films onto solid supports with the CAb-DMPA mixture. The mass transferred, according to quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) measurements, increased linearly with the number of deposited layers. With UV-vis absorption, fluorescence and FTIR spectroscopies, we confirmed that the LB films contain polysaccharides, proteins and DMPA. Therefore, the CAb biological action must be attributed not only to polysaccharides but also to proteins in the complex. (C) 2008 Elsevier Inc. The properties of Langmuir and Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films from a block copolymer with polyethylene oxide and phenylene-vinylene moieties are reported. The LB films were successfully transferred onto several types of substrates, with sufficient quality to allow for evaporation of a metallic electrode on top of the LB films to produce polymer light emitting diodes (PLEDs). The photoluminescence and electroluminescence spectra of the LB film and device were similar, featuring an emission at ca. 475 nm, from which we could infer that the emission mechanisms are essentially the same as in poly(p-phenylene) derivatives. Analogously to other PLEDs the current versus voltage characteristics of the LB-based device could be explained with the Arkhipov model according to which charge transport occurs among localized sites. The implications for nanotechnology of the level of control that may be achieved with LB devices will also be discussed.

The immobilization of enzymes in organized two-dimensional matrices is a key requirement for many biotechnological applications. In this paper, we used the Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) technique to obtain controlled architectures of urease immobilized in solid supports, whose physicochemical properties were investigated in detail. Urease molecules were adsorbed at the air-water interface and incorporated into Langmuir monolayers of the phospholipid dipalmitoyl phosphatidyl glycerol (DPPG). Incorporation of urease made DPPG monolayers more flexible and caused the reduction of the equilibrium and dynamic elasticity of the film. Urease and DPPG-urease mixed monolayers could be transferred onto solid substrates, forming LB films. A close packing arrangement of urease was obtained, especially in the mixed LB films, which was inferred with nanogravimetry and electrochemistry measurements. From the blocking effect of the LB films deposited onto indium tin oxide (ITO) substrates, the electrochemical properties of the LB films pointed to a charge transport controlled by the lipid architecture. This review deals with surface-enhancved Raman scattering (SERS) employing Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films, which serve as model systems for developing theoretical and experimental studies to elucidate the SERS effect. In addition, LB films have be used as integral parts of molecular architectures for SERS-active substrates. On the other hand, SERS and surface-enhaced resonant Raman scattering (SERRS) have allowed various properties of LB films to be investigated, especially those associated with molecular-level interactions. In the paper, emphasis is placed on single molecule detection (SMD), where the target molecule is diluted on an LB matrix of spectral silent material (low Raman cross section). The fabrication of Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films of synthetic polymers allows the control of molecular architecture in order to optimize physical properties. In this paper, the surface chemistry of a quinoline-fluorene based copolymer spread on the air-water interface is investigated. Surface pressure-area isotherms as well as Polarization-Modulation Infrared Reflection-Absorption Spectroscopy (PM-IRRAS) were employed to characterize the films, which could be transferred to solid supports by the LB technique. Atomic force microscopy as well as UV-Vis and fluorescence spectroscopies have shown a regular deposition of the polymers, and the luminescence properties could be controlled with the number of layers deposited on the solid support. As a result, the photoluminescence of the LB films was considerably higher than that observed for the spin coated film, and the maximum emission peak was shifted to higher energies, which is attributed to the molecular-level interactions within the layer-ordered structure of the LB film. The luminescence response would possibly be tuned to approach the highest level, which allows the films to be employed in future applications in efficient optical devices such as organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). Preserving the enzyme structure in solid films is key for producing various bioelectronic devices, including biosensors, which has normally been performed with nanostructured films that allow for control of molecular architectures. In this paper, we investigate the adsorption of uricase onto Langmuir monolayers of stearic acid (SA), and their transfer to solid supports as Langmuir Blodgett (LB) films. Structuring of the enzyme in beta-sheets was preserved in the form of 1-layer LB film, which was corroborated with a higher catalytic activity than for other uricase-containing LB film architectures where the beta-sheets structuring was not preserved. The optimized architecture was also used to detect uric acid within a range covering typical concentrations in the human blood. The approach presented here not only allows for an optimized catalytic activity toward uric acid but also permits one to explain why some film architectures exhibit a superior performance. This study presents the preparation of a nanostructured films with an amphiphilic meso-porphyrin whose side chains are derived from cardanol, a byproduct of the cashew industry. The Langmuir films were prepared on acidified water to reducing the self-aggregation of the complex and the mean molecular area for the meso-porphyrin measured by surface pressure isotherms was 177 Å2 and confirmed by compressibility modulus. The 700 nm band observed in the Langmuir films supports the coexistence of monomers and dimers similar to the spectra of the solution (CHCl3/CH3COOH). The formation of bright block domains with different sizes and shapes for the monolayer disappears after surface pressure starts to increase (π ≥ 2 mN m-1), as observed by Brewster angle microscopy measurements. Results of UV-vis spectra of the Langmuir films and FTIR reflection of the Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films of meso-porphyrin indicated that the molecules exhibit preferential orientation with the planes perpendicular to the water (Langmuir) and parallel to the substrate (LB) surface. Resultados antigos de potencial de superfície de filmes de Langmuir não eram reprodutíveis, devido B presença de impurezas na subfase aquosa sobre a qual os filmes se formavam. Dados recentes para o ácido esteárico, no entanto, mostram um comportamento reprodutível Neste trabalho, foi promovida com sucesso uma recaracterização através de medidas de pressão de superfície (II) e potencial de superfície (ΔV) de compostos alifáticos simples (álcoois, ésteres, ácido e amina), obtidos sobre subfases devidamente purificadas. Os resultados obtidos são inéditos e mostram que o potencial de superfície desses filmes é nulo para grandes valores de área molecular média (A), aumentando a partir de um valor de área crítico, Acr, até atingir um valor máximo, ΔVmax. Modelos para o potencial de superfície de filmes de Langmuir mostram boa concordância com os resultados obtidos. As curvas de pressão e potencial de superfície para os álcoois e ésteres praticamente não se modificam pela alteração do pH da subfase na faixa de 1 a 13. Filmes de Langmuir e Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) foram produzidos a partir da polianilina não substituída, que se tornou processável e solúvel em clorofórmio apos ser dopada com ácidos funcionalizados. Para atingir condições otimizadas de formação e deposição dos filmes, foi realizado um estudo criterioso empregando vários ácidos funcionalizados: canfor sulfônico (CSA), dodecilbenzeno sulfônico (DBSA) e tolueno sulfônico (TSA); e também os solventes e plastificantes N-metilpirrolidinona (NMP) e m-cresol. Soluções de polianilina de alta massa molar processada com estes ácidos foram depositadas sobre subfases aquosas ácidas (pH = 2), formando os chamados filmes monomoleculares de Langmuir. Através de um estudo dos parâmetros que influenciam a formação dos filmes de Langmuir conseguimos obter monocamadas estáveis. Desta forma os filmes puderam ser transferidos para substratos sólidos (vidro bk7), usando a técnica de Langmuir-Blodgett. Os filmes LB produzidos são do tipo Z, ou seja, a deposição só é bem sucedida na retirada do substrato, o que significa que mesmo no filme de Langmuir alguns grupos hidrofílicos se encontravam na interface filme/ar. Este trabalho apresenta um estudo sobre síntese, caracterização e propriedades de ftalocianinas metálicas na forma de filmes ultrafinos. Foi obtida mais de uma fração para cada ftalocianina. Para as ftalocianinas de paládio (PdPc) e de ródio (RhPc), apenas uma fração pôde ser totalmente purificada para trabalhos com a técnica Langmuir-Blodgett (LB). As frações de ftalocianina de rutênio (RuPc) não atingiram pureza suficiente para fabricação de filmes de Langmuir e LB. As propriedades das ftalocianinas de ródio e bisftalocianina de itérbio (YbPc2), sintetizada em trabalho anterior, foram estudadas na formação de filmes LB. Observou-se forte influência das condições exterimentais nos resultados. Para a YbPc2, a posição do sensor de medida de pressão altera a pressão de colapso dos filmes, algo que só é observado em filmes de compostos semi-anfifilicos. O potencial de superficie dos filmes de Langmuir depende da velocidade de compressão, mas tais diferenças não aparecem nos filmes LB depositados. Foi observada uma forte interação química entre a RhPc e o ácido esteárico, o que é atípico para ftalocianinas. Esta interação parece ser bem menos intensa nos filmes LB. Filmes de Langmuir e Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) de ligninas extraídas do bagaço de cana-de-açúcar, via processo organossolve, foram fabricados. As isotermas de pressão revelaram uma área para a seção média da lignina em torno de 100 Å para a monocamada condensada, enquanto a modelagem a partir dos espectros elipsométricos indicou uma espessura por camada de cerca 60 Å para os filmes LB. Porém a deposição não se mostrou homogênea sobre toda a superfície do substrato como observado pelas medidas de microscopia de força atômica (AFM), de forma que filmes mais homogêneos foram obtidos a partir de uma solução mista de Iignina com estearato de cádmio. A área por molécula, calculada com base no número de moléculas de ácido esteárico sobre a subfase, aumenta com a quantidade de lignina na solução mista, indicando a presença de ambos os componentes também na monocamada. Os espectros de infravermelho com transformada de Fourier (FTIR) mostraram que tanto a lignina quanto o estearato de cádmio são transferidos e os espectros de ultravioleta visível (UV-vis) indicaram que esta deposição é homogênea até a 20ª camada. Os difratogramas de raios-X e as medidas de AFM mostram que a deposição de lignina e estearato de cádmio ocorre em domínios separados. As medidas de AFM revelaram ainda um aumento da rugosidade do filme com o aumento do número de camadas depositadas e com a maior irregularidade do substrato utilizado. The fabrication of supramolecular structures from the tetraruthenated porphyrin-containing phosphines, {TPyP[RuCl3(dppb)](4)}, RuTPyP, is demonstrated with Langmuir and Langmuir-Blodgett films. The surface pressure-molecular area isotherms (pi-A) point to an edge-on arrangement for the RuTPyP molecules in the condensed state. Weak aggregation in the Langmuir films was indicated by non-zero surface potentials at large areas per molecule and a slight red shift in the ultraviolet-visible absorption spectrum in comparison to the spectrum in solution. Further aggregation occurs in the Z-type Lang muir-Blodgett films, which was confirmed with ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy of the deposited films. Fourier transform infrared and Raman spectroscopic data for powder and Langmuir-Blodgett films indicate that the RuTPyP molecules are chemically stable in Langmuir-Blodgett films regardless of the contact with water during film fabrication. The nanostructured nature of the Langmuir-Blodgett films was manifested in cyclic voltammetry due to the high sensitivity of the metallic centers in RuTPyR Electrodes modified with Langmuir-Blodgett films exhibit an anodic peak at 100 mV and a cathodic peak at 7 mV, which is assigned to RuIII/RuII redox processes. One of the limitations of these materials, though, is the slow dynamics of the alignment process that requires significant molecular rearrangement. In this paper, we report on Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films of a derivative of azocrown ether, referred to as 29-membered diazocrown ether, specially synthesized for the photoisomerization to involve only distortion of the shape of the crown. As a result, the dynamics of the writing process was extremely fast, with maximum birefringence being reached within less than 1 s, to be contrasted with tens or even hundreds of seconds for other azobenzene materials. A disadvantage is this strategy, however, is that the resulting birefringence was low, of the order of 10(-3), because the closely packed arrangement prevented the whole diazocrown molecule to be fully reoriented. The LB films were successfully transferred onto several types of substrates, with sufficient quality to allow for evaporation of a metallic electrode on top of the LB films to produce polymer light emitting diodes (PLEDs). The photoluminescence and electroluminescence spectra of the LB film and device were similar, featuring an emission at ca. 475 nm, from which we could infer that the emission mechanisms are essentially the same as in poly(p-phenylene) derivatives. Analogously to other PLEDs the current versus voltage characteristics of the LB-based device could be explained with the Arkhipov model according to which charge transport occurs among localized sites. The implications for nanotechnology of the level of control that may be achieved with LB devices will also be discussed.

The use of Langmuir-Blodgett films of a perylene derivative and polypyrrole in the detection of trace levels of Cu2+ ions

Langmuir films of a tetracarboxylic perylene derivative and polypyrrole display condensed surface pressure isotherms that are shifted when Cu2+ ions are added to the ultrapure water subphase. These films were transferred onto interdigitated gold electrodes leading to Y-type Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films. The electrodes modified with 5-layer LB films were immersed into a flask with ultrapure water and water containing Cu2+ ions at concentrations ranging from mM to muM. Impedance measurements indicated a distinct electrical response for the two types of films. Although the materials chosen have no specificity for ionic metals, they can be combined for detecting trace levels of Cu2+, which may be exploited in water quality monitoring. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. They have potential applications in many fields, such as microelectronic devices, catalysts, organic field-effect transistors, chemical sensors and biosensors. There are two critical parameters that determine the polymer-based device performance: chemical structure and nanostructure of the conjugated polymer in solid state. Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films may be an interesting alternative for producing the films used in the devices since they can be obtained with high degree of thickness control, low number of defects, and some degree of organization at the molecular scale. However, most of the polythiophene derivatives have poor film forming properties by LB method and need the use of film form aiding materials. Langmuir and Langmuir-Blodgett films of 16-membered azobenzocrown ether with naphthalene residue were prepared and characterized. The Langmuir monolayers were successfully transferred to form LB films onto solid substrates. [{RuCl3(dppb)}2(µ-4,4'-bipy)] was prepared from the reaction of the 4,4'-bipyridine and mer-[RuCl3(dppb)].H2O, in good yield. The characteristics of the binuclear complex studied with FT-IR, UV-Vis, EPR and elemental analysis were similar to those of the [RuCl3(dppb)L] (L= N-heterocycle). [{RuCl3(dppb)}2(µ-4,4'-bipy)] is soluble in weakly polar organic solvents, facilitating its use in the production of Langmuir and Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films production. While the cast films and the complex in solution were red, the LB films were green-bluish, probably due to oxidation of the bisphosphine. The nanostructured nature of the LB films was manifested in electrochemical measurements, as these films exhibited higher peak currents than cast or dip-coated films. For all films, the electrochemical response was dominated by the RuIII RuIII/RuII RuII process, which differed from that of the binuclear compound. For the latter, an irreversible process appeared due to formation of new species. The electroactivity of LB films from [{RuCl3(dppb)}2(µ-4,4'-bipy)] also pointed to their possible use in electrochemical devices.
