Este trabalho é fruto de uma pesquisa-ação associada às atividades de preparação vocal realizadas com o Coral Escola e o Coral Oficina do Comunicantus: Laboratório Coral do Departamento de Música da ECA-USP. Os objetivos dividiram-se em duas perspectivas: a formação do estagiário em preparação vocal e o desenvolvimento da técnica vocal nos coros Escola e Oficina. A coleta de dados foi feita por meio da participação nos ensaios destes dois grupos no ano de 2010 e da análise do protocolo de documentação do Comunicantus: Laboratório Coral. This paper presents the analysis and evaluation of the Power Electronics course at So Paulo State University-UNESP-Campus of Ilha Solteira(SP)-Brazil, which includes the usage of interactive Java simulations tools and an educational software to aid the teaching of power electronic converters. This platform serves as an oriented course for the lectures and supplementary support for laboratory experiments in the power electronics courses. The simulation tools provide an interactive and dynamic way to visualize the power electronics converters behavior together with the educational software, which contemplates the theory and a list of subjects for circuit simulations. In order to verify the performance and the effectiveness of the proposed interactive educational platform, it is presented a statistical analysis considering the last three years. © 2011 IEEE.

A presente pesquisa tem como objetivo investigar o funcionamento e a efetividade de um Laboratório Virtual de Ensino de Matemática quanto ao processo de apropriação didático-pedagógico dos recursos tecnológicos digitais na formação inicial do curso de Licenciatura em Matemática da Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN) na modalidade Educação a Distância (EaD). Para tanto, foi realizado estudo com 53 alunos participantes da disciplina "Instrumentação para o Ensino de Matemática I" no ambiente virtual do Moodle. Esses estudantes desenvolveram atividades didáticas usando softwares de geometria dinâmica concernentes à construção de saberes específicos desta área do conhecimento. A escolha metodológica foi pela análise interpretativa de 299 extratos textuais gerados no fórum de discussão da disciplina mediante aportes teóricos relativos à formação inicial docente, ao Laboratório Virtual, à tecnologia e à Educação a Distância. In order to teach specific mathematical and applicable concepts of modeling a vehicle suspension system to students in the 2.672 class at MIT, a design of a lab apparatus and plan of the procedure for a laboratory exercise featuring the necessary materials was completed. Specifically, the exercise had the goal of teaching providing students with an insight to vehicle suspension systems and the potential for finding an ideal system by varying system parameters. Using a scaled model of a suspension system that can be modeled as a 2nd order differential system with a variable damper, the lab allows students to study different characteristics of the system and learn to apply mathematics and control to the system. The laboratory exercise will feature a scaled suspension system of a standard vehicle with a variable damping and variable oscillatory input force. These conditions will allow students working the exercise create different scenarios and to vary the damping, allowing them to predict and model the system as a 2nd-order differential equation. This thesis describes a project that is part of the collaboration between MIT and universities in sub-Sahara Africa to exploit the value of iLabs in the developing world. The main goal of this project is to develop software that will exploit the value of the National Instruments Educational Laboratory Virtual Instrumentation Suite (ELVIS) system in Africa by integrating it into the iLabs shared architecture, while taking into consideration the special circumstances surrounding the deployment of iLabs in Africa such as bandwidth limitations, limited access to networked computers and lack of computer skills on the part of students. Integrating ELVIS into iLabs will facilitate the rapid deployment of new online labs to augment the Physics and Electrical engineering curricula in these universities. iLab development efforts for this project are being done in parallel with developers at the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) in Nigeria. One of the main goals of the new system is to fill the gap of laboratory experiences in introductory level electronics and physics classes, which are hardest hit by the lack of equipment due to their typically large enrollment. Our goal is to support the development of electronic circuit building skills by providing an environment where students can easily try different circuit configurations before submitting experiments for execution. iLabs are remote online laboratories that allow users to perform experiments through the Internet. As an educational tool the iLab platform enables students and educators, who do not have access to laboratories, to complement their theoretical knowledge by carrying out experiments remotely on equipment located anywhere in the world and at any time of the day. Students perform experiments on actual instruments allowing them to get real data, instead of relying on simulations. The iLab project has been deployed in 3 universities in Africa using the National Instruments Educational Laboratory Virtual Instrument Suite platform which is a cheap all-in-one electronics workstation for electronics experiments. This thesis describes an increase in the functionality available on the current version of the ELVIS iLab in order to enable a wider range of experiments to be run on the platform. This study is the result of an investigation about the process of continuing education experienced by a teacher of Primary Education, of a public school in the state of Goiânia - GO, in the context of a pedagogical practice supported by the use of teaching resources belonging to a Mathematics Education laboratory. In the constitution of this research, we carry out an analysis of the process of reflection of the teachers own pedagogical practice and a review of the possible benefits of the use of elaborated and developed activities with the aid of the laboratory practice of the collaborative teacher and student learning resources. For this, we adopted theoretical framework authors dealing with themes such as, laboratory mathematics education, teachers training in math, and critical reflection on teaching practice. In this context, we adopt the approach of qualitative research in the form of participatory research, in order to analyze the educational practice of teachers of basic education, using as instruments for collecting data through participant observation, field diary, filming, the questionnaire and the semi-structured interview. In this perspective, the analysis of the data led us to observe the development of this work process in three categories: From naive curiosity to epistemological curiosity; development amid transformative practices; and the meaning of the experience for the teacher and students. This paper describes an educational analysis of a First Year University chemistry practical called ‘Thermodynamics Think-In’. The analysis follows the formalism of the Advancing Chemistry by Enhancing Learning in the Laboratory (ACELL) project, which includes a statement of education objectives, and an analysis of the student learning experience. The practical consists of a suite of ten well-known, short experiments on the general theme of ‘thermodynamics in chemical change’. Pairs of students undertake a specified and graded set of five of these experiments. All experiments require careful observation by both students, followed by discussion between them until a common, mutually-agreed explanation for their observations can be formulated. The pair then discusses their explanation with a demonstrator, who may challenge it, point out flaws, or provide new information. Student surveys were conducted using the ACELL Student Learning Experience instrument. Analysis of the data shows that students enjoy working on the practical, and report it to be a beneficial learning experience that effectively develops their understanding of thermodynamic principles. The concept of Education for Sustainable Development, ESD, has been introduced in a period where chemistry education is undergoing a major change, both in emphasis and methods of teaching. Studying an everyday problem, with an important socio-economic impact in the laboratory is a part of this approach. Presently, the students in many countries go to school in vehicles that run, at least partially, on biofuels; it is high time to let them test these fuels. The use of renewable fuels is not new: since 1931 the gasoline sold in Brazil contains 20 to 25 vol-% of bioethanol; this composition is being continually monitored. With ESD in mind, we have employed a constructivist approach in an undergraduate course, where UV-vis spectroscopy has been employed for the determination of the composition of two fuel blends, namely, bioethanol/water, and bioethanol/gasoline. The activities started by giving a three-part quiz. The first and second ones introduced the students to historical and practical aspects of the theme (biofuels). In the third part, we asked them to develop a UV-vis experiment for the determination of the composition of fuel blends. Little is known about the prevalence of zoonotic infections among laboratory animal care technicians (LAT). Q fever, a disease caused by Coxiella burnetii, is a known occupational hazard for persons caring for livestock. We sought to determine the seroprevalence of C. burnetii antibodies among LAT and to identify risk factors associated with C. burnetii seropositivity. A survey was administered and serum samples collected from a convenience sample of 97 LAT. Samples were screened by using a Q fever IgG ELISA. Immunofluorescent antibody assays for phase I and phase II IgG were used to confirm the status of samples that were positive or equivocal by ELISA; positive samples were titered to endpoint. Antibodies against C. burnetii were detected in 6 (6%) of the 97 respondents. In our sample of LAT, seropositivity to C. burnetii was therefore twice as high in LAT as compared with the general population. Age, sex, and working with sheep regularly were not associated with seropositivity. Risk factors associated with seropositivity included breeding cattle within respondent's research facility, any current job contact with waste from beef cattle or goats, and exposure to animal waste during previous jobs or outside of current job duties. There is big consensus that computer games may be an effective way of learning and many initiatives are being developed where aspects from cognitive sciences are being applied in the development of these games. In this article, we present Mate Marote, a flexible framework for large-scale educational interventions. Based on the delivery programs of computers to each student in Argentinian schools, we developed an environment that provides activities/games and registers usage statistics. This framework keeps installation up-to-date connecting with a central server as Internet connection is detected, synchronizing new activities, version updates and usage history. As a first testbed intervention, we deployed three games in La Rioja province (Argentina), where OLPC is the official program. These games were focused on training inhibitory control, working memory and planning skills. O Laboratório Virtual é um ambiente de estudo que visa complementar a ação docente em sala de aula, a fim de trabalhar conceitos abstratos de maneira experimental e que usa recursos virtuais como estratégia de ensino para aulas de física. Este laboratório foi desenvolvido a partir da filmagem de sistemas reais com o objetivo de observar todo o movimento de um objeto junto a um instrumento que possibilitou a medida de sua posição. Posteriormente, foi incorporado ao vídeo um código de tempo, de modo que, ao transformá-lo em quadros independentes, as imagens extraídas permitem medir a posição ocupada pelo corpo em instantes conhecidos. Com uma tabela de posição por tempo, toda a evolução dinâmica do sistema pode ser obtida. Due to time and financial restrictions in an educational laboratory, we are making compromises, using experimental setups in which limitations and uncertainties are important. In these cases we should pay particular attention to the role of different factors that affect our experiment, in order to achieve the best possible educational outcome and to avoid misconceptions. In this paper problems related to the use of very low activity source 60Co in the experiment of measuring the linear attenuation coefficient of gamma rays through matter, will be presented. The role of background radiation in measurements and in the relative statistical uncertainty as well as the role of statistical uncertainty in the choice of representative measurements is discussed. This paper summarizes the contributions of a previous educational research in scientific and technological careers. The research field is related to the redefinition of experimental education and the role of the laboratory in the basic Physics education of engineers. A systemic model of Science learning where conceptual, methodological, epistemological and attitudinal aspects are interrelated is adopted. The proposal is structured around cycles of group activities in the laboratory context, for progressive construction of scientific knowledge. It addresses the content of electrical conduction and the models that describe and explain experimental results. The methodology integrates experimental and theoretical work. The students develop activities in small groups, guided and coordinated by the teacher. Students’ difficulties are faced by adopting a recursive teaching dynamic that allows us to reviewaspects unlearned or incorrectly processed. Shedding light on spectrophotometry: The SpecUP educational spectrophotometer

Students often regard laboratory instruments as 'black boxes' which generate results, without understanding their principles of operation. This lack of understanding is a concern because the correct interpretation of analytical results and the limitations thereof is invariably based on an understanding of the mechanism of measurement. Moreover, a number of tertiary institutions in Africa have very limited resources and access to laboratory equipment, including that related to the field of photonics, which prevents students from acquiring hands-on practical experience. We address both of these challenges by describing how students can assemble a novel, low-cost spectrophotometer, called the SpecUP, which can then be used in a range of experiments. The same kind of information can be generated as that obtained with costly commercial spectrophotometers (albeit of a lower quality). With the SpecUP, students also have the opportunity to vary instrumental parameters and to observe the effects these changes have on their experimental results, allowing for enquiry-based learning of spectroscopic principles. The results obtained for some chemistry-related spectrophotometric experiments are described for each of the two operational modes of the SpecUP although the instrument can be applied in fields ranging from physics to biochemistry.

An historical overview of the development of occupational therapy educational institutions in Brazil

INTRODUCTION: The first occupational therapy (OT) undergraduate programme in Brazil opened in 1956 in Rio de Janeiro by the "Associagao Brasileira Beneficente de Reabilitagao", as a technical educational course. It became a university undergraduate programme only in 1969. The aim of this article is to provide a comprehensive overview of the development of OT undergraduate programmes in Brazil. In addition, a mapping of the distribution of existing educational courses in Brazil will be reported through an historical overview. From 1958 until 1986, 15 undergraduate programmes were identified. Between 1987 and 1999, this number increased to 24 and finally between 2000 and 2011 this number was raised to 75 across the whole country. There are some significant differences between the OT courses, depending on the region of the country. The lecturing laboratory spaces that drew the most attention were the Assistive Technology Laboratories, which only began to appear in the middle of the 2000s CONCLUSION: There was a marked increase throughout the last decade in the number and the quality of OT undergraduate programmes in Brazil, which consequently enhanced the number of occupational therapists in the country, improved standards within the profession and brought advances in the field of practice. In order to understand the role of the practitioners in the contemporary world a dialogue between different countries and continents plays an important role when reflecting on the OT undergraduate programmes.
