Os agentes cimentantes são utilizados, rotineiramente, como meio de fixação para restaurações dentárias e responsáveis por preencher a interface entre o dente e uma restauração, por isso devem apresentar propriedades mecânicas satisfatórias, a fim de suportar os esforços mastigatórios e as cargas oclusais presentes no meio bucal. Sendo assim, o objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar quatro agentes cimentantes (um fosfato de zinco, um fosfato de zinco com cobre, um ionômero de vidro e um cimento resinoso), em relação às resistências ao cisalhamento por puncionamento, à compressão axial e diametral. Para o ensaio de cisalhamento foram confeccionados espécimes em uma matriz em forma de anel com dimensões de 14 mm de diâmetro interno e 1,5 mm de altura que permitia obter um disco ou moeda dos materiais com essas dimensões a qual foi acoplada em um dispositivo próprio para o teste. Já para o ensaio de compressão axial foram seguidas as normas da "ADA n°96" e "ISO 9917:1(E) cujo espécime é de formato cilíndrico com dimensões de 6 mm de altura por 4mm de diâmetro. Mesmo não apresentando normas específicas para agentes cimentantes, o ensaio de tração diametral seguiu as dimensões do espécime para o ensaio de compressão. Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq); Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP); The present work seeks to evaluate the biocompatibility of experimental glass ionomer cements (GIC) prepared from niobium-calcium fluoro-alumino-silicate glass powder and two commercial GICs. The GICs were implanted into the subcutaneous connective tissue of sixty rats. The rats were sacrificed during four varying time periods: 7, 15, 30, and 60 days and histopathological examinations were then performed. The Kruskal-Wallis test was performed to evaluate any significant differences between the materials. Additionally, multiple comparisons of the mean rank were also carried out using the Dunn test (p<0.05). No significant differences were observed that one GIC was superior to the other. The tissue response for all of the GICs tested was similar in all the periods examined.

It was verified the penetration of phosphoric acid into 3 commercial calcium hydroxide-based cements (Life, Renew and Prisma VLC Dycal). The colorimetric method employed permitted the identidication of phosphorus amount in representative samples of 6 successive layers 0.1 mm thick of each material. The acid etching used were the commercial products Scotchbond Etching Gel--3M at 36.114% by weight and Solução Condicionadora--Johnson & Johnson at 36.054% by weight. The contact time was 60 seconds. The result showed that layers 0.1 mm tick for Life and Prisma VLC Dycal and 0.2 mm thick for Renew were able to block the penetration of phosphoric acid solution whereas layers 0.1 mm thick for the 3 cements were able to block the penetration of phosphoric acid gel.

Background: Since only a few data have been published concerning the effects of resinous dental materials on the pulp-dentin complex, the aim of this study was to evaluate the biocompatibility of resin-based materials applied as liners in deep cavities prepared in duman teeth. Methods: After preparing class V cavities, the following dental materials were applied on the axial walls: group 1, Vitrebond™ (VIT; 3M ESPE); group 2, Ultra-Blend® Plus™ (UBP; Untradent); and group 3, Clearfil™ SE Bond (CSEB; Kuraray). In group 4 (control), the hard-setting calcium hydroxide cement Dycal (CH; Caulk/Dentsply) was used. The teeth extracted at 7 days or between 30 and 85 days after the clinical procedures were processed for histological evaluation. Results: For all the experimental and control groups, most of specimens exhibited no pulpal response or slight inflammatory reaction associated with slight tissue disorganization at 7-day period. Moderate inflammatory pulpal response occurred only in one tooth (RDT = 262 μm) of group 3 in which transdentinal diffusion of resin components was observed. Pós-graduação em Odontologia Restauradora - ICT; O objetivo do trabalho foi analisar in vitro a eficiência de adesão através de ensaio de microtração, de um cimento autocondicionante (self-adhesive), sobre esmalte e dentina, com e sem tratamento prévio da superfície dental, antes e após termociclagem. Foram utilizados 56 terceiros molares, 28 para esmalte e 28 para dentina, divididos em 6 grupos experimentais e 2 controle. O cimento resinoso autocondicionante selecionado para os grupos experimentais foi: Rely-X Unicem (3M ESPE/ St. Paul, MN, EUA), e para os grupos controle o Variolink II (Ivoclar Vivadent, AG, Schaan, Liechtenstein) (VR), cimento de cura dual não autocondicionante. Os dentes dos grupos experimentais foram subdivididos quanto à aplicação direta do cimento sobre a superfície dental (R), com o condicionamento ácido (RAC) e com condicionamento ácido e aplicação de sistema adesivo (RACAS). Blocos de resina composta previamente polimerizados foram cimentados à superfície dental. In this study, the effect on the setting time by the addition of different kinds of rosin and hydrogenated resin on the Grossman cement powder was evaluated. The experiments were carried out following the American Dental Association’s specification number 57 for root canal sealers. For this analysis, different Grossman cement powders were prepared using different rosins (X, WW and WG) and hydrogenated resins (Staybelite and Staybelite ester 10). The study of the physicochemical properties of the Grossman cements obtained the different kinds of rosins and hydrogenated resins interference on the cement’s setting time. The hydrogenated resin, having a higher pH, increased the setting time of the cement when compared to the X, WW and WG rosins.

This research evaluated the sealer ability of 2 temporary filling materials (white Cimpat and IRM) and 1 restorative cement (glass ionomer), in canals prepared for root posts. Sixty human palatal roots of maxillary first molars were used. They were divided into 3 groups, according to the cements used: Group I (Cimpat), Group II (IRM) and Group III (glass ionomer). The roots were rendered impermeable, filled with the respective cements and soon after immersed into 0.2% Rhodamine B dye and maintained for 72 hours in an oven for 37°C. Microleakage was measured with a light microscope, cutting the roots longitudinally in buccolingual direction. The results showed that Group I presented significantly more leakage than Groups II and III, which were not significantly different from each other.

Increased surface roughness and wear of resin cements may cause failure of indirect restorations. The aim of this study was to evaluate quantitatively the surface roughness change and the vertical wear of four resin cements subjected to mechanical toothbrushing abrasion. Ten rectangular specimens (15 × 5 × 4 mm) were fabricated according to manufacturer instructions for each group (n = 10): Nexus 3, Kerr (NX3); RelyX ARC, 3M ESPE (ARC); RelyX U100, 3M ESPE (U100); and Variolink II, Ivoclar/Vivadent (VL2). Initial roughness (Ra, µm) was obtained through 5 readings with a roughness meter. Specimens were then subjected to toothbrushing abrasion (100,000 cycles), and further evaluation was conducted for final roughness. Vertical wear (µm) was quantified by 3 readings of the real profile between control and brushed surfaces. Data were subjected to analysis of variance, followed by Tukey’s test (p < 0.05). The Pearson correlation test was performed between the surface roughness change and wear (p < 0.05). Evaluate bond strength (BS) between leucite glass ceramic and dentin when luted with conventional and self-adhesive resin cements, preheated or not, through a microtensile bond strength test (μTBS) and examine the fracture mode. Materials and Methods: Twenty-four extracted human third molars were sectioned for the removal of the occlusal enamel and root portion, and ramdomly divided into four groups, with four teeth for each group. Twenty-four leucite glass ceramic discs (IPS Empress Esthetic, Ivoclar Vivadent, Schaan, Liechtenstein) were obtained and luted to the teeth, following manufacturers instructions, divided in four (4) groups: GI – RelyX ARC (3M ESPE) + Scotchbond Multi-Purpose Plus (3M ESPE); GII – RelyX ARC preheated 60°C + Scotchbond Multi-Purpose Plus; GIII – RelyX U200; GIV – RelyX U200 preheated 60°C. They were cut into 1 mm2 specimens, stored in destilled water for 24hs at 25±2°C and submitted to the μTBS in a universal testing machine. Each fragment of the specimen was analysed in stereoscopic microscope (45X) to classify the failure mode. SEM images of a representative pair of each failure mode were obtained. Data were statisticaly analysed with Variance Analysis (ANOVA) and Tukey (α=0.05). Results: There were statistical significant differences on BS between the cements RelyX ARC and U200 (p<0.05) in both groups with and without heating. This aim of this study was to evaluate the physicochemical and biological properties of novel experimental cements (Hybrid, Paste and Resin) based on synergistic combinations of existing materials, including pH, diametral tensile strength (DTS) and cytotoxicity comparing them with mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA - Angelus??) and a glass ionomer cement (GIC) developed at our laboratory. For the physicochemical and biological tests, specimens with standard dimensions were produced. pH measurements were performed with digital pH meter at the following time intervals: 3, 24, 48 and 72 h. For the DTS test, cylindrical specimens were subjected to compressive load until fracture. The MTT assay was performed for cytotoxicity evaluation. Data were analyzed by ANOVA and Tukey???s test (??=0.05). Paste group showed pH values similar to MTA, and Hybrid group presented pH values similar to GIC (p>0.05). The tested materials showed pH values ranging from alkaline to near neutrality at the evaluated times. MTA and GIC showed similar DTS values. The lowest and highest DTS values were seen in the Paste and Resin groups, respectively (p<0.05). METHODS: Cast crown copings were cemented to Straumann synOcta titanium implant abutments with three different readily used and available cements. Für die vergleichende Messung der maximalen Zug-/Scherfestigkeit von Haftverbund-Systemen, wie sie z.B. bei der Zementierung von Suprakonstruktionen entstehen, wurde ein modifiziertes Werkstoffprüfverfahren entwickelt. CAD/CAM-gefertigte Zirkoniumdioxid-Standard-Prüfkörper und spezielle Apparate-Technik ermöglichten einen neuartigen Haftverbund-Test unter geometrisch und thermisch adjustierten Bedingungen. Ziel der Studie war der Bruchfestigkeitsvergleich statisch belasteter Haftverbund-Systeme aus 7 Zementprodukten verschiedener Materialklassen zwischen mikromechanisch rsp. tribochemisch konditionierten Y-TZP-Oberflächen in Abhängigkeit zur Zementierlast vor und nach thermischer Wechselbelastung. 100 identische CAD/CAM-Zirkoniumdioxid-Prüfkörper wurden sandgestrahlt, für monomerhaltige Zemente zusätzlich tribochemisch silikatisiert/silanisiert (Rocatec®-Verfahren), unter 4 verschiedenen Lasten (2, 4, 6, 8 kg) zementiert und initial 24h bei 37°C in Wasser gelagert. Die Hälfte aller initial gelagerten Prüfkörper durchliefen zusätzlich ein thermisches Wechselbad (15000 mal 5°C/55°C). Anschließend wurde die maximale Bruchfestigkeit unter statischer Zug-/Scherbelastung (0,5 mm/min) bei 37°C erhoben. Alle gemessenen Systeme brachen kohäsiv. There is a need to develop new cements to optimize pulp therapy strategies. The aim of this study was evaluate physic-chemical and biological parameters of experimental cements (Hybrid, Paste and Resinous), including pH, diametral tensile strength and cytotoxicity of these experimental cements comparing them to MTA (Angelus®, Londrina, PR, Brazil) and a glass ionomer cement developed in our laboratory. For the physic-mechanical and biological tests specimens with standard dimensions were produced. For pH measurement, specimens were immersed in culture medium (DMEM) supplemented with FBS (fetal bovine serum) and analyzed by digital pH meter at 3, 24, 48 and 72h. For diametral tensile strength test the specimens were subjected to compressive load until the fracture. To evaluate cytotoxicity 3T3 cells were cultured and exposed to the cement eluates. The cell viability was detected using MTT test. The results were analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey's test (p <0.05). The Paste group showed pH values similar to the MTA, as well as the Hybrid group was similar to the GIC group (p> 0.05). Este estudo avaliou o efeito do método de ativação na resistência à flexão e módulo de elasticidade de quatro cimentos de dupla cura à base de metacrilato. Dois cimentos resinosos auto-adesivos (Clearfil SA Cement (CSA) e RelyX U100 (U)) e dois cimentos convencionais (Clearfil Esthetic Cement (CE) e RelyX ARC (ARC)) foram usados para produzir um total de 45 amostras em forma de barra (7 mm de comprimento x 2 mm de largura x 2 mm de espessura) usando três diferentes modos de ativação (n = 15): fotoativação direta (D), fotoativação indireta com anteparo de resina composta 2 mm (I) e polimerização química (Q). O teste dos três pontos foi realizado após 24 horas de armazenamento em água deionizada a 37°C utilizando uma máquina universal de ensaio (Instron) a uma velocidade transversal de 0,5 mm / min até a fratura. Os valores de resistência à flexão (MPa) e módulo de elasticidade (GPa) foram submetidos aos testes ANOVA e Tukey ('alfa' =. 05). The influence of protective varnish on the integrity of orthodontic cements

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study was to assess the influence of saliva contamination over the structural strength and integrity of conventional glass-ionomer cements used for cementing orthodontic bands in the absence and presence of a surface-protecting varnish. METHOD: 48 samples were prepared by inserting 3 types of glass-ionomer cements into standardized metallic matrixes of 10 mm of diameter and 2 mm of depth. The cements used were: Meron (VOCO), Ketac-Cem (3M ESPE) and Vidrion C (DFL), all of which comprised groups A, B and C, respectively. Subgroups A1, B1 and C1 comprised samples with no surface protection, whereas subgroups A2, B2 and C2 comprised samples of which surface was coated with Cavitine varnish (SS White), after cement manipulation and application, in order to protect the cement applied. All samples were stored in artificial saliva for 24 hours at 37ºC. A Vickers diamond micro-durometer was used to produce indentations on the non-treated group (non-varnished) and the treated group (varnished). RESULTS: Varnished materials had significantly higher microhardness values in comparison to non-varnished materials. Ketac-Cem had the highest microhardness value among the varnished materials. [ES] Los cementos de polialcanoatos o iomómeros de vidrio son materiales que han sido utilizados con éxito durante más de 20 años en trabajos de odontología. Un problema que presentan dichos cementos es la liberación de iones Al3+ al medio fisiológico, lo que puede dar lugar a daños irreversibles en los pacientes. Con el propósito de evitar dicha liberación, se han preparado y caracterizado cementos obtenidos a partir de la reacción entre el ácido poliacrílico y la wollastonita (CaSiO3) en una solución acuosa de ácido tartárico. Los resultados obtenidos han puesto de manifiesto que estos cementos alcanzan resistencias a la compresión similares a las de los cementos de polialcanoato o ionómeros convencionales. Esta pesquisa avaliou a capacidade seladora de dois cimentos temporários (Cimpat branco e IRM) e um cimento restaurador em canais preparados para pinos intra-radiculares. Foram usadas 60 raízes palatinas de primeiros molares superiores humanos. Elas foram divididas em 3 grupos, conforme os cimentos usados: grupo I (Cimpat), grupo II (IRM) e grupo III (ionômero de vidro). As raízes foram impermeabilizadas, preenchidas com os respectivos cimentos e em seguida imersas em tintura de Rhodamina B a 0,2% e mantidas por 72 horas em uma estufa a 37ºC. A micro infiltração foi mensurada com um microscópio de luz nas raízes cortadas longitudinalmente, na direção vestíbubo-lingual.
