Computational modeling of the translational diffusion of water molecules in anisotropic environments entails vital relevance to understand correctly the information contained in the magnetic resonance images weighted in diffusion (DWI) and of the diffusion tensor images (DTI). In the present work we investigated the validity, strengths and weaknesses of a coarse-grained (CG) model based on the MARTINI force field to simulate water diffusion in a medium containing carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as models of anisotropic water diffusion behavior. We show that water diffusion outside the nanotubes follows Ficḱs law, while water diffusion inside the nanotubes is not described by a Ficḱs behavior. We report on the influence on water diffusion of various parameters such as length and concentration of CNTs, comparing the CG results with those obtained from the more accurate classic force field calculation, like the all-atom approach.

In this paper we are going to use social network for education, focusing the work on the curriculum. To achieve this we need both to work with the curricular structure and a system that let us work with curricular objects. The systems located at the Cloud allow the interaction and combination of different platforms, but we haven't found any social network exclusively defined with the curriculum and which allows the programmed work by the teacher in the session. A structured system like this divides the problem and creates a research line focused on the edition of contents at the Cloud in the shared space.

This paper illustrates how wholly owned entry modes of multinational companies (MNCs) are jointly determined by both the strategic objectives of the MNC and the local firms' assets in the creation of value. In particular, the entry mode chosen is based on the potential reciprocal technological spillovers between local firms and MNC subsidiaries. M&As are preferred when host countries exhibit a certain level of development in their local systems of innovation, especially for technologically leading MNCs. Otherwise, for technological laggard MNCs, greenfield investments prevail and M&As may be carried out for meeting demand motives in developing local systems of innovation.

The purpose of this investigation was to describe the physiological profile of elite, senior Chinese female wrestlers. Twenty-five elite wrestlers, nationally ranked in the top 3 of their weight class, participated in this study. The subjects included Olympic and world champion medalists. The physiological profile included testing of running maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max), 3,200-m run time, 400-m run time, 30-second Wingate anaerobic power and capacity, shoulder, elbow, knee, and trunk isokinetic torque, and 1 repetition maximums (1RMs) in specified exercises. The major results (mean ± SD) were VO2max: 50.58 ± 3.33 ml·kg(-1)·min(-1); 3,200-m run: 14 minutes 1 second ± 49 seconds; 400-m run: 1 minute 11 seconds ± 4 seconds; Wingate maximal anaerobic power: 495.21 ± 79.13 W and mean power: 262.97 ± 52.39 W; 1RM deadlift: 124 ± 19 kg; 1RM deep squat: 98 ± 11 kg; 1RM prone rowing: 72 ± 8 kg; 1RM power clean: 76 ± 12 kg; and 1RM hold and squat: 109 ± 17 kg. In absolute terms in the majority of measures, the heavier weight classes had greater values than the lighter weight classes, but relative to body mass, there were few differences in measures between the weight classes. The Olympic and World Championship medalist had the best value or was at the upper end of a measure's range for the strength and power measures. The results indicate that female wrestling success is not dependent on one physiological characteristic...

Traditional examinations are demotivating for most students and difficult to implement in practical lessons (mainly based on skills). Therefore, innovative assessment methods where students play a major role in making the choice of it can motivate students better than traditional methodologies. Based on Teams-Games- Tournament (TGT) technique developed by DeVries and Edwards (1973) and DeVries and Slavin (1978), this paper presents a cooperative learning technique to assess a course, as an alternative to traditional assessment methods. Students are actively involved in the decision-making process to choose the continuous assessment criteria. It fosters group cooperation to achieve common goals as well as healthy competition among teams. The purpose is to promote knowledge and transfer of learning among groups, develop cross-curricular skills, motivate and encourage students. Several techniques proposed by students were implemented in different courses. Most of them were successful and highly valued by students, who think it is a stimulating way to test knowledge, creates a positive atmosphere, fosters class participation, has a positive effect in the students' mood, and makes lessons more interactive as well as interesting...

Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease caused by treponema pallidum that typically produces skin and oral lesions during the acute phase. In the chronic phase, bone, viscera, cardiovascular, and neurological manifestations may appear. Therefore, syphilis is classically divided into stages of occurrence, with each stage having its own peculiar signs and symptoms related to time and antigen-antibody responses. The stages are primary, secondary, latent, tertiary, and congenital. Oral lesions of secondary syphilis are rare, however, they may present and the dentist should be able to diagnose them. A 23-years-old white male was referred by his physician to our clinic. The oral mucosa presented several irregular, shallow ulcers, with definite limits and variable shape. Additional ulcers and red macular lesions were present in the tongue, palate and labial mucosa. In the anamnesis, the patient reported having previously palm-plantar papule-macular red lesions. Physical examination revealed no cervical or submandibular lymphadenopathy and no facial asymmetry. The patient noted that the painful, vesicular and ulcerated lesions appeared one month ago. In that moment, he also presented with asthenia, dysphagia and pain. Routine hematologic examination was normal. The patient's medical history was insignificant except for an episode of urethritis six months before. He had been treated by his physician with topical corticoids...

A series of bispyridinium compounds were synthesized by a short sequence of reactions from symmetric diamides. All compounds were tested for their antiproliferative activity against HT-29, a cell line derived from a human colon adenocarcinoma, and their inhibitory activity against choline kinase (ChoK), a novel anticancer molecular target already in clinical trials. Most of the compounds analyzed showed good antiproliferative activities, in the micromolar range, with the identification of promising lead molecules as a new family of potential inhibitors of ChoK. Background: Disease management programmes (DMPs) have been shown to reduce hospital readmissions and mortality in adults with heart failure (HF), but their effectiveness in elderly patients or in those with major comorbidity is unknown. The Multicenter Randomised Trial of a Heart Failure Management Programme among Geriatric Patients (HF-Geriatrics) assesses the effectiveness of a DMP in elderly patients with HF and major comorbidity. Methods/Design: Clinical trial in 700 patients aged >= 75 years admitted with a primary diagnosis of HF in the acute care unit of eight geriatric services in Spain. Each patient should meet at least one of the following comorbidty criteria: Charlson index >= 3, dependence in >= 2 activities of daily living, treatment with >= 5 drugs, active treatment for >= 3 diseases, recent emergency hospitalization, severe visual or hearing loss, cognitive impairment, Parkinson's disease, diabetes mellitus, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), anaemia, or constitutional syndrome. Half of the patients will be randomly assigned to a 1-year DMP led by a case manager and the other half to usual care. The DMP consists of an educational programme for patients and caregivers on the management of HF, COPD (knowledge of the disease...

McArdle disease is caused by lack of glycogen phosphorylase (GP) activity in skeletal muscle. Patients experience exercise intolerance, presenting as early fatigue and contractures. In this study, we investigated the effects produced by a lack of GP on several genes and proteins of skeletal muscle in McArdle patients. Muscle tissue of 35 patients and 7 healthy controls were used to identify abnormalities in the patients' transcriptomic profile using low-density arrays. Gene expression was analyzed for the influence of variables such as sex and clinical severity. Differences in protein expression were studied by immunoblotting and 2D electrophoresis analysis, and protein complexes were examined by two-dimensional, blue native gel electrophoresis (BN-PAGE). A number of genes including those encoding acetyl-coA carboxylase beta, m-cadherin, calpain III, creatine kinase, glycogen synthase (GS), and sarcoplasmic reticulum calcium ATPase 1 (SERCA1), were found to be downregulated in patients. Specifically, compared to controls, GS and SERCA1 proteins were reduced by 50% and 75% respectively; also, unphosphorylated GS and SERCA1 were highly downregulated. On BN-PAGE analysis, GP was present with GS in two muscle protein complexes. Our findings revealed some issues that could be important in understanding the physiological consequences of McArdle disease: (i) SERCA1 downregulation in patients could result in impaired calcium transport in type II (fast-twitch) muscle fibers...

Numerous biomedical advances have been made since Carl and Gerty Cori discovered the enzyme phosphorylase in the 1940s and the Scottish physician Brian McArdle reported in 1951 a previously 'undescribed disorder characterized by a gross failure of the breakdown in muscle of glycogen'. Today we know that this disorder, commonly known as 'McArdle disease', is caused by inherited deficiency of the muscle isoform of glycogen phosphorylase (GP). Here we review the main aspects of the 'pathogenomics' of this disease including, among others: the spectrum of mutations in the gene (PYGM) encoding muscle GP; the interplay between the different tissue GP isoforms in cellular cultures and in patients; what can we learn from naturally occurring and recently laboratory-generated animal models of the disease; and potential therapies.
