Current European Resuscitation Guidelines 2010 recommend the use of prompt/feedback devices when training for cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). We aimed to assess the quality of CPR training among second-year medical students with a voice advisory mannequin (VAM) compared to guidance provided by an instructor. Forty-three students received a theoretical reminder about CPR followed by a 2-minute pretest on CPR (compressions/ventilations cycle) with Resusci Anne SkillReporter (Laerdal Medical). They were then randomized into a control group (n = 22), trained by an instructor for 4 minutes per student, and an intervention group (n = 21) trained individually with VAM CPR mannequin for 4 minutes. After training, the students performed a 2-minute posttest, with the same method as the pretest. Participants in the intervention group (VAM) performed more correct hand position (73% vs. 37%; P = 0.014) and tended to display better compression rate (124 min vs. 135 min; P = 0.089). In a stratified analyses by sex we found that only among women trained with VAM was there a significant improvement in compression depth before and after training (36 mm vs. 46 mm, P = 0.018) and in the percentage of insufficient compressions before and after training (56% vs. 15%; P = 0.021). In comparison to the traditional training method involving an instructor...

Cross-linked magnetic chitosan beads were prepared in presence of epichlorohydrin under alkaline conditions, and subsequently incubated with glutaraldehyde in order to obtain an activated support for covalent attachment of nucleoside 2'-deoxyribosyltransferase from Lactobacillus reuteri (LrNDT). Changing the amount of magnetite (Fe3O4) and epichlorohydrin (EPI) led to different macroscopic beads to be used as supports for enzyme immobilization, whose morphology and properties were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, spin electron resonance (ESR), and vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM). Once activated with glutaraldehyde, the best support was chosen after evaluation of immobilization yield and product yield in the synthesis of thymidine from 2'-deoxyuridine and thymine. In addition, optimal conditions for highest activity of immobilized LrNDT on magnetic chitosan were determined by response surface methodology (RSM). Immobilized biocatalyst retained 50 % of its maximal activity after 56.3 h at 60 °C, whereas 100 % activity was observed after storage at 40 °C for 144 h. This novel immobilized biocatalyst has been successfully employed in the enzymatic synthesis of 2'-deoxyribonucleoside analogues as well as arabinosyl-nucleosides such as vidarabine (ara-A) and cytarabine (ara-C). Furthermore...

In this study, allele and genotype frequencies of the ADRB1 Arg389Gly (rs1801253), ADRB2 Gly16Arg (rs1042713) and Gln27Glu (rs1042714), and ADRB3 Trp64Arg (rs4994) variations were compared in the following three groups of Spanish (Caucasian) men: (1) world-class endurance athletes (E; runners and cyclists, n=100), (2) elite power athletes (P; sprinters, jumpers and throwers, n=53) and (3) non-athletic controls (C; n=100). No significant differences were observed in genotype and allele distributions among the study groups except for the ADRB3 Trp64Arg polymorphism in E versus C (27% vs 8% of carriers of the Arg allele in E and C, p<0.001; frequency of the minor Arg (C) allele of 14% vs 4% in E and C, p=0.001). Heterozygosity for the ADRB3 Trp64Arg polymorphism seems to be associated with elite endurance performance, while other variants of the β-adrenergic receptors' genes do not seem to significantly influence top-level sports performance, at least in athletes of Spanish origin.

This study contributes to current research on foreign language textbook use by analyzing Teaching Assistants⿿ (TAs) textbook use. Three TAs, teaching different sections of the same intermediate level course, were observed and audiotaped during the teaching of a book chapter, i.e., five lessons of fifty minutes each. The lessons were verbatim transcribed to create a classroom corpus. McDonough, et al. (2013) criteria were used to identify textbook adaptations and Shawer's (2010) strategies for in-classroom curriculum delivery were explored. Results show that adaptation of activities was a very frequent process showing instances of all of McDonough et al.⿿s categories, with the exception of simplifying. By far the most recurrent adaptation was deleting. Despite using the same textbook and syllabus, the lessons of each TA turned out differently because of their adaptations and their own teaching priorities. Thus, these TAs showed strategies of both curriculum-transmitters and curriculum-developers.

This study examines how service supplier and buyer value co-creation influences buyers' attitudes toward service providers. Service-dominant logic is a prevalent concept in the services industry, providing an important marketing theory in which intangible resources, co-creation of value, and relationships are the keys to determining marketing exchanges. This research describes a model for analyzing value co-creation management in the hotel industry, focusing on the specific market segment of disabled customers. This framework helps foster value co-creation to increase the benefits for participants during each stage of their relationship. The paper also presents the managerial implications of the research findings.

The purpose of the present study was to assess how the results and scores in combined events in track and field vary with regard to the norms (events and scoring tables) and age group. The sample included 1650 combined-event results (790 from the men's competition and 860 from the women's competition) by the 15 best-ranked athletes from the 1998-1999 season through the 2008-2009 season of the under-14 to over-23 age groups.

The aim of the present study was to characterise the behaviour of top class women’s and men’s soccer in terms of shot, goal and save characteristics, in order to detect gender-based differences. Such information may allow the construction of a model with which the specific demands of women’s soccer can be established. This would then allow training and teaching to be modified to better meet these specific demands, and not as has traditionally happened, considering the behavior and demands of the men's soccer.

PURPOSE: To evaluate how soft lens power affects rigid gas-permeable (RGP) lens power and visual acuity (VA) in piggyback fittings for keratoconus. METHODS: Sixteen keratoconus subjects (30 eyes) were included in the study. Piggyback contact lens fittings combining Senofilcon-A soft lenses of -6.00, -3.00, +3.00 and +6.00 D with Rose K2 RGP contact lenses were performed. Corneal topography was taken on the naked eye and over each soft contact lens before fitting RGP lenses. Mean central keratometry, over-refraction, RGP back optic zone radius (BOZR) and estimated final power as well as VA were recorded and analyzed. RESULTS: In comparison to the naked eye, the mean central keratometry flattened with both negative lens powers (p<0.05 in all cases), did not change with the +3.00 soft lens power (p=1.0); and steepened with the +6.00 soft lens power (p=0.02). Rigid gas-permeable over-refraction did not change significantly between different soft lens powers (all p>0.05). RGP's BOZR decreased significantly with both positive in comparison with both negative soft lens powers (all p<0.001), but no significant differences were found among negative- or positive-powers separately (both p>0.05). Estimated RGP's final power increased significantly with positive in comparison with negative lens powers (all p<0.001)...

Most studies on aging and marathon have analysed elite marathoners, yet the latter only represent a very small fraction of all marathon participants. Also, analysis of variance or unpaired Student's t tests are frequently used to compare mean performance times across age groups. In this report we propose an alternative methodology to determine the impact of aging on marathon performance in both non-elite and elite marathoners participating in the New York City Marathon. 471,453 data points corresponding to 370,741 different runners over 13 race editions (1999-2011) were retrieved. Results showed that: i) the effect of aging on marathon performance was overall comparable in both sexes; ii) the effect of aging differed between the fastest and the slowest runners in both sexes; and iii) the magnitude of the sex differences was higher among the slowest runners compared with the fastest ones. Current data suggests that the biological differences between sexes allow men to have a better marathon performance across most of the human lifespan.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the cause of more than two-thirds of all dementia cases. Although there is no effective treatment against this disorder, its association with neuroinflammation suggests that non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) might represent a potential therapeutic option. The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of NSAIDs in the treatment of AD using a meta-analysis approach.

Living cells are most perfect synthetic factory. The surprising synthetic efficiency of biological systems is allowed by the combination of multiple processes catalyzed by enzymes working sequentially. In this sense, biocatalysis tries to reproduce nature's synthetic strategies to perform the synthesis of different organic compounds using natural catalysts such as cells or enzymes. Nowadays, the use of multienzymatic systems in biocatalysis is becoming a habitual strategy for the synthesis of organic compounds that leads to the realization of complex synthetic schemes. By combining several steps in one pot, a significant step economy can be realized and the potential for environmentally benign synthesis is improved.

It is well-recognized that exercise improves mental health, e.g., by decreasing depressive behaviors, improving hippocampal-dependent learning and neurogenesis, and increasing dendritic plasticity. Yet how exercise influences the brain at the molecular level is not clearly understood. Yau et al recently reported that the antidepressant effects of physical exercise are mainly mediated by adiponectin, an adipocyte-secreted hormone ('adipocytokine') with neuroprotective effects at the central nervous system level (Yau et al., 2014). Emotion awareness is a key concept related to different child adjustment outcomes. This relationship, influenced by mood, has been found in the preadolescent and adolescent population for somatic complaints. However, little is known in the case of younger children and when other adjustment outcomes are included. The objective of this work is to analyze the contribution of emotion awareness and mood upon different adjustment outcomes (somatic complaints, maladjustment, and peer sociometric status), in children aged 8-12 years old. Self-reported questionnaires and peer-nomination scales were administered to 1423 children (mean age = 9.8 years old). Results support the influence of emotion awareness reinforced by mood, not only upon somatic complaints, but also upon new indicators of personal and social maladjustment, within an age bracket that has not been considered previously. These results stress the importance of emotional abilities and the corresponding affective moods in children's daily life.

The motivation of this research is the lexical complexity involving a few words of Spanish due to their countless sociocultural content values. Our goal is to study, through the testimony of our students what are their needs regarding lexical materials. Although in the Spanish publishing market there are plenty of lexicographical materials, we observed that between students there is a tendency to seek alternatives to traditional lexical resources. We want to find the causes and propose, as far as possible, solutions to this phenomenon. The words subject of study in this paper are the Spanish adjectives: "cursi, cutre, hortera and paleto". All these words contain factors that hinder teaching and learning and these factors are, first, aspects of cultural backgroundand, secondly, the lexical variation that they offer and the dynamism of language that causes in some cases the acquisition of additional nuances, usages, etc.. In this paper, we use a quantitative methodology. Firstly, a questionnaire was developed to measure the students' experience. This quiz will have to serve at the same time to make students reflect on the conditions necessary for deeper understanding of the lexicon. Secondly, after analyzing the survey results, we aim to address the needs and the process of assimilation of the students when learning the vocabulary. In this way...
