Bees and beekeeping are suffering a global crisis. Constant information on swarm's conditions would be a key to study new diseases like colony collapse disorder and to develop new beekeeping tools to improve the hive management and make it more efficient. A platform for beehives monitoring is presented. It is based on the analysis of the colonies buzz which is registered by a bunch of sensors sending the data to a common database. Data obtained through sound processing shows plenty of patterns and tendency lines related to colonies activities and their conditions. It shows the potential of the sound as a swarm activity gauge. The goal of the platform is the possibility to store information about the swarm's activity. The objective is to build a global net of monitored hives covering apiaries with different climates, razes and managements.

Objective: Design: Subjects: Results: Conclusion: We examined the effect of light intensity resistance exercise training performed during the second and third trimester of pregnancy on the newborn's birth size. We also studied the association between maternal body weight prior to pregnancy and newborn's birth size.Randomised controlled trial. We randomly assigned 160 sedentary gravidae to either a training (n=80) or a control (n=80) group. The training programme focused on light resistance and toning exercises (three times per week, 35-40 min per session). We recorded the Apgar score, birth weight, birth length, and head circumference of the newborn, as well as gestational age at time of delivery from hospital perinatal records. We also measured maternal weight and height before parity and gestational weight gain.Maternal characteristics neither differed between groups (all P>0.1) nor newborn characteristics (all P>0.1). Maternal body weight was positively and significantly associated with newborn's birth weight and length only in the control group (beta=19.20 and 0.065, respectively, P<0.01).Light intensity resistance training performed over the second and third trimester of pregnancy does not have a negative impact on the newborn's body size or overall health. Exercise interventions might attenuate the adverse consequences of maternal body weight before pregnancy on the newborn's birth size.

We examined 26 professional riders during time trial (TT) competitions of the Grand Tours of cycling (Tour de France and Vuelta Espana; 1997-2003) for the exertional characteristics of contending vs. non-contending (i.e., support) riders. We categorized HR time during TT into training impulse (TRIMP) defined from seasonal VO2max testing [Phase I (RCP]. Races were: Short TT (15 km; 48.12+/-8.7 km); Uphill TT (20.0+/-8.7 km) and Team TT (44.1+/-20.9 km). We observed statistically significant event-by-contender interactions for all TT (all, P<0.0001) except the short TT. During uphill TT, contenders exerted fewer total TRIMP (P<0.01), more Zone 3 TRIMP (P<0.05), and fewer Zone 2 TRIMP (P<0.01) vs. non-contenders. For individual TT, contenders accumulated more Total and Zone 3 TRIMP vs. non-contenders (all, P<0.05). Interestingly, during the team TT, contenders accumulated more Zone 3, and fewer Zone 2 TRIMP (all, P<0.05), despite having the opportunity to draft behind other riders while in paceline race formation. During TT events, contending riders compete at a level of exertion corresponding to a higher metabolic demand during the uphill TT, individual TT and team TT.

Risk and transgression on holiday: 'new experiences' and the pied piper of excessive consumption

When British youth spend holiday abroad, they tend to engage in increased consumption of alcohol, drugs, violence and unprotected sex - collectively known as 'risk' behaviours. While numerous epidemiological studies have documented the extent of these risk behaviours in places like the Balearic Islands, few have taken a phenomenological approach with the participants who go there - to find out how they experience and attribute meaning to their transgressions on holiday. Our research reports on this matter and is based on ethnographic data collected in 2009, 2010 and 2011. We argue that individual and group holiday ambitions for a 'blow out' are actively complemented by aggressive commercial forces, which seek to capitalise on consumer spending, thus assisting in the production of risk. We show how this works by reporting from the resort of San Antonio, Ibiza.

Background: Primary urothelial carcinoma of the prostate is an infrequent male malignancy with a dismal prognosis, that originates in the periurethral prostatic gland. This neoplasia is considered, in general terms, to be chemosensitive but prospective trials regarding therapy and prognosis are lacking, due to the infrequent nature of this entity. This paper is a case series regarding the accumulated experience in our institution with the use of cisplatin-based chemotherapeutic regimens in these patients. Methods: The clinico-pathological findings of a series of 12 patients with primary urothelial carcinoma of the prostate diagnosed and treated over a 10 year period are reviewed, with an emphasis on therapy and evolution. Results: No patient in the series reached long-term survival. Mean time to death was 24.1 months (range 5-48 months). The combination of local treatment plus cisplatin-based systemic chemotherapy did not achieve satisfactory results. However, patients treated with radical surgery (cystectomy or prostatectomy) and at least 3 cycles of multiple chemotherapy behaved better than the rest. Radical surgery achieved better local control than radiotherapy, but repeated transurethral resection of the prostate plus systemic chemotherapy may also provide local control in selected patients. Conclusion: Despite combined therapeutic efforts that pursued both local control and the prevention of a systemic relapse...

Nowadays, the use of remote laboratories is a common feature in order to get students involved in practical experiences. This is particularly important in distance learning environment. The regular practice is to develop a particular laboratory, required by the student competence's curricula. Usually, this involves a lack of methodology or a standard procedure so, new developments must be done to include new laboratories, additionally so many “manual” procedures are required. RELATED (REmote LABoratory Extended) it's used to solve these issues. In this paper, a practical experience of the structured development process of a virtual laboratory, using RELATED framework, will be presented from the point of view of students. This virtual laboratory is a simple signal generator. This signal generator will be used to generate a reference position for the height of the ball of an electromagnetic levitation system in a control experiment. Finally, responses of surveys made by students will be presented, in order to get satisfaction results of using/development of virtual/remote laboratories using RELATED.
