P>Aim. This paper is a report of a study on the association between sleep patterns during work nights and recovery from work among nursing workers, considering domestic work hours. Background. Several hospitals allow nursing workers to sleep during the night shift, but this is rarely evaluated from the workers` health perspective. The need for recovery from work concept can be useful for testing the impact of night work on sleep. Recovery is not a problem if workers have enough time to recover between periods of work. Therefore, domestic work would be likely to interfere in the recovery process. Methods. This cross-sectional study was carried out at three hospitals in 2005-2006, through a comprehensive questionnaire. All nursing teams engaged in assistance to patients were invited to participate. Analyses included female night workers with no incidence of insomnia. Participants (n = 396) were classified into those who did not sleep during night shifts, those who slept for up to 2 hours and those who slept for 2-3 hours. Results. Binomial logistic regression analysis showed that sleeping on the job for 2-3 hours during night shifts is related to a better recovery from work provided the workers do not undergo long domestic work hours. Conclusions. Being allowed to sleep at work during night shifts seemed to contribute to...

The association between working hours and work ability was examined in a cross-sectional study of male (N = 156) and female (N = 1092) nurses in three public hospitals. Working hours were considered in terms of their professional and domestic hours per week and their combined impact; total work load. Logistic regression analysis showed a significant association between total work load and inadequate work ability index (WAI) for females only. Females reported a higher proportion of inadequate WAI, fewer professional work hours but longer domestic work hours. There were no significant differences in total work load by gender. The combination of professional and domestic work hours in females seemed to best explain their lower work ability. The findings suggest that investigations into female well-being need to consider their total work load. Our male sample may have lacked sufficient power to detect a relationship between working hours and work ability. (c) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The general purpose of this paper is to promote a political economy whose objective is to promote the deepening of human rights. In particular my attention will be focused on the political economy of the right to work. The first part of the paper concerns the description of the historical process that led to the proclamation of a right to work in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and later on in the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights. In this part we will also define in which consists the right to work. The second part of the paper is dedicated to the presentation of arguments that attempt to legitimize the right to work. For those members of the international community that have signed and ratified the proclamations described above the process through which they were approved confers the right to work plenty enough legitimacy. But given the highly political nature of the process that led to their adoption it should not come as a surprise that, especially among economists, economic rights are considered just a legal ornament. Therefore, it may be useful to search for different sources of legitimacy for human rights, and economic rights in particular, other than political and philosophical if one intends to make economics take economic rights seriously. The first argument is based on the inequality established in the capitalist system between the two contractors in the labour market...

Thesis (Ed. D.)--University of Rochester. Margaret Warner Graduate School of Education and Human Development, 2009.; Evangelical institutions of higher education began introducing programs of social work education after 1960 during a period of academic reform and dramatic social change. Public dialogue increasingly acknowledged impoverishment as a reality in America, and the renewal of social concern among evangelicals stimulated interest in education for the social work profession. At the same time, the profession of social work was reorganizing and mobilizing to educate social workers for thousands of new social service jobs. An unlikely intersection of purposes brought evangelicals and social workers together in service to the needs of society. Considering the secular stance of the social work profession and the reticence of evangelicals to engage with social issues for two generations, the development of programs of social work education in evangelical institutions presents a surprising phenomenon ripe for examination. Employing historical case study method, two questions guide the research. First, why and how were programs of social work education established in evangelical institutions of higher education between 1960 and 1985? Second...

Employees maintain a personal view toward their work, which can be referred to as their work orientation. Some employees view their work as their life’s purpose (i.e., calling work orientation) and they tend to be 1) prosocially motivated, 2) derive meaning from work, and 3) feel that their purpose is from beyond the self. The purpose of the current dissertation was to differentiate calling work orientation from other similar workplace constructs, to investigate the most common covariates of calling work orientation, and to empirically test two possible moderators of the relationship between calling work orientation and work-related outcomes of job satisfaction, job performance, and work engagement. Two independent samples were collected for the purpose of testing hypotheses: data were collected from 520 working students and from 520 non-student employees. Participants from the student sample were recruited at Florida International University, and participants from the employee sample were recruited via the Amazon Mechanical Turk website. Participants from the student sample answered demographic questions and responded to self-report measures of job satisfaction, job performance, work engagement, spirituality, meaningful work, prosocial motivation...

Australia is one of the most popular countries for immigrants to settle. Many highly qualified Indians from India have made Australia their home, and they hold important positions in the Australian work-force. The Australian work-force now consists not only of employees from different countries, but also of parents who try to balance their work roles and family roles simultaneously. For dual-earner families this can be difficult and could lead to increased job stress and work family conflict. Due to these cultural and gender differences, experiences in the paid work-force cannot be assumed to be the same for all employees. The purpose of this research was to investigate the role of culture and gender among working professionals in Australia and to study the interactional patterns within dual-earner couples in the Australian work-force. This was exploratory research and was conducted using three studies. All studies were cross-sectional, and qualitative as well as quantitative measures were used for data collection. In the first study data were collected from matched pairs of 10 Australian and 10 Indian born mothers who were employed in the Australian work-force. Interviews were conducted and responses to the interview were recorded. Results suggested some significant differences in job stress...

This report investigates the phenomena of unpaid work in Australia. Unpaid work is defined as activities such as cooking, cleaning, childcare, other housework and voluntary work done without payment. The report looks at unpaid work in contemporary Australia, including current statistical data, sociological research, knowledge gaps and potential policy initiatives. It provides a descriptive analysis of the 2006 ABS Time Use Survey data, a literature review of current research into unpaid work, identifies knowledge gaps in the current literature and investigates cross-national research to find initiatives that increase male uptake of unpaid work. Analysis of the 2006 ABS Time use survey data showed: • An obvious and ongoing gender disparity exists in levels of unpaid work in Australia, with women undertaking sixty-five percent of all unpaid work. • Two hours and 12 minutes defines the gendered division of labour in modern Australian households; men spend 2 hours and 12 minutes more per day than women in paid work, women spend 2 hours and 12 minutes more per day in unpaid work. • The total time people are spending on unpaid work is increasing, with women continuing to spend more time in all unpaid work activities...

The present study tested a nomological net of work engagement that was derived from its extant research. Two of the main work engagement models that have been presented and empirically tested in the literature, the JD-R model and Kahn’s model, were integrated to test the effects that job features and personal characteristics can have on work engagement through the psychological conditions of meaningfulness, safety, and availability. In this study, safety refers to psychological perceptions of safety and not workplace safety behaviors. The job features that were tested in this model included person-job fit, autonomy, co-worker relations, supervisor support, procedural justice, and interactional justice, while the personal characteristics consisted of self-consciousness, self-efficacy, extraversion, and neuroticism. Thirty-four hypotheses and a conceptual model were tested in order to establish the viability of this nomological net of work engagement in which it was expected that meaningfulness would mediate the relationships between job features and work engagement, safety would mediate the relationships that job features and personal characteristics have with work engagement, and availability (physical, emotional, and cognitive resources) would mediate the relationships that personal characteristics have with work engagement. Furthermore...

The present research study examined the relationships in a work motivation context among perceived importance and achievement of work values, locus of control and internal work motivation. The congruence of a work value was considered to be the discrepancy between the importance of a work value and the perceived achievement of that value. The theoretical framework utilized was based on a self-perpetuating cycle of motivation which included the perceived importance and achievement of work values and internal work motivation as separate and distinct, yet interrelated factors. It was hypothesized that individuals who experienced high congruence of work values would experience higher levels of internal work motivation than individuals who had low congruence of work values. It was also hypothesized that individuals who had an internal locus of control would experience more internal work motivation individuals well, the and have higher congruence of work values than who had an external locus of control. As possibility of locus of control as a moderator between importance of work values and internal work motivation was explored. Survey data were collected from 184 managerial level employees of the XYZ company during an ongoing training session. The following instruments were employed to measure the variables: Elizur's (1984) Importance of Work Values...

RATIONALE: Work absences due to depression are prevalent, suggesting the need for interventions addressing the challenges facing people returning to work following depression. Few such interventions have been developed and evaluated. Cognitive work hardening is a return-to-work intervention for people on mental health disability leaves. Anecdotal evidence supports its use for individuals returning to work following a depressive episode; however, it has not been systematically evaluated. OBJECTIVES: This research aimed to: 1) examine the theoretical underpinnings of cognitive work hardening; 2) test the effectiveness of cognitive work hardening in preparing people to return to work following a depressive episode; and 3) identify key elements of cognitive work hardening based on participants’ experiences. METHODS: Intervention mapping was used to analyze cognitive work hardening by deconstructing it into fundamental elements and theoretical underpinnings including occupational therapy models. Intervention effectiveness was assessed with a single group (n = 21) pre-post study design. Participants reported their return to work readiness using work ability, fatigue, and depression measures. Participants shared their experience at intervention completion and at 3-month follow-up. Work status and sense of well-being were also reported at follow-up. RESULTS: The Person-Environment-Occupation (PEO) Model...

São ainda discutidas as limitações do estudo e propostas novas linhas de investigação.; The link between work and family spheres have obtained great interest by the scientific community...

Objective: Discuss conceptual, legal and preventive aspects of bullying at work. Methodology: A survey of national scientific publications about bullying at work from the legal view point was performed in 2004: books, articles published in journals indexed or not on SciELO and Lilacs in the period ranging from 2000 until 2004, laws and proffered sentences. Publications from the World Health Organization, International Organization of Work, European Agency for Health and Safety at Work among others provided information on conceptual and preventive aspects of bullying at work. Results e discussion: There is not a single consensual definition of bullying at work. Bullying can be vertical or horizontal. It is a continued violence, which aims to exclude the victim from work. Work situations which favor bullying at work include: management style, problems related to work organization and those resulting from the flexibilization of production. Bullying at work can cause or contribute to many health disorders. The most common diagnosis are depression and anxiety disorders, but also adjustment disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder can happen. The legal doctrine relates bullying at work to the theory of civil responsibility, to material damage as well as to moral damage. In the Federal sphere there are law projects being analyzed at the National Congress...

ORIENTATION: The work of industrial/organisational (I/O) psychologists presents an interesting and relevant context for studying meaning and engagement as components of happiness. RESEARCH PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to determine how I/O psychologists experience the meaning of their work and to investigate the relationships between their experiences of work-role fit, meaning of work, psychological meaningfulness and work engagement, utilising the happiness framework proposed by Seligman (2002). MOTIVATION FOR THE STUDY: I/O psychologists spend more than 88% of their working day with people, and they are primary role models for happiness in the workplace. Information about their work engagement and experiences of meaning is therefore needed. RESEARCH DESIGN, APPROACH AND METHOD: A survey design was used. A convenience sample (n = 106) was taken of I/O psychologists in South Africa. A biographical questionnaire, the Work-Role Fit Scale, the Work-Life Questionnaire, the Psychological Meaningfulness Scale, the Work Engagement Scale and a survey measuring the actual and desired time spent on six broad categories of work were administered. MAIN FINDINGS: Work-role fit predicted psychological meaningfulness and work engagement. The calling orientation to work predicted both psychological meaningfulness and work engagement. Work-role fit mediated the relationship between the meaning of work and psychological meaningfulness. Work-role fit partially mediated the relationship between a calling orientation to work and work engagement. PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS: A calling orientation to work should be fostered in I/O psychologists because it contributes to experiences of work-role fit...
