The research presented in this paper proposes a novel quantitative model for decomposing and assessing the Value for the Customer. The proposed approach builds on the different dimensions of the Value Network analysis proposed by Verna Allee having as background the concept of Value for the Customer proposed by Woodall. In this context, the Value for the Customer is modelled as a relationship established between the exchanged deliverables and a combination of tangible and intangible assets projected into their endogenous or exogenous dimensions. The Value Network Analysis of the deliverables exchange enables an in-depth understanding of this frontier and the implicit modelling of co-creation scenarios. The proposed Conceptual Model for Decomposing Value for the Customer combines several concepts: from the marketing area we have the concept of Value for the Customer; from the area of intellectual capital the concept of Value Network Analysis; from the collaborative networks area we have the perspective of the enterprise life cycle and the endogenous and exogenous perspectives; at last, the proposed model is supported by a mathematical formal description that stems from the area of Multi-Criteria Decision Making. The whole concept is illustrated in the context of a case study of an enterprise in the footwear industry (Pontechem). The merits of this approach seem evident from the contact with Pontechem as it provides a structured approach for the enterprises to assess the adequacy of their value proposition to the client/customer needs and how these relate to their endogenous and/or exogenous tangible or intangible assets. The proposed model...

This methodology paper puts forth a novel process with which to portray the value network and enterprise asset creation. Real cases which involved field research by the authors are used to present and better illustrate certain concepts. Organizations involve intense human interaction and require novel ways which make evident variations in performance, a central aspect of management today and in the near future. Our contribution is in combining the use of the narrative / storylines, game design patterns, value network analysis and the dynamic capabilities paradigm to reduce the complexity of the strategy debate. Our modelling tool is also pictorial and so simple to grasp. The primary value of graphical notations lies in their communication and understanding possibilities (Fowler, 2004). The importance of the dynamic capabilities paradigm (Teece et al., 1997) is emphasized in which ICT plays a central and strategic role (Pavlou, 2004) in the creation of value and consequently enterprise assets. Geertz (2000) brought attention to the fact that research is performed in order to clarify or usefully revise our own or someone else’s ideas and we see this clarification and revision as being necessary given a heightened need to motivate and inspire people to carry out actions of disruptive change (Denning...

Extreme value theory (EVT) provides a framework to formalize the study of behaviour in the tails of a distribution. In this paper we use EVT to model the statistical behaviour of mortality rates over a given high threshold age and to estimate the significance of rare longevity risk in a given population. We adopt a piecewise approach in estimating the optimal threshold age using an iterative algorithm of maximum likelihood estimation.that statistically determines the cut-off between the central (Gompertz) part of the distribution and the upper tail modelled using the generalized Pareto distribution. The model is empirically tested using the most recent period mortality data for the total, male and female populations of Portugal and Spain. We use some classical results from EVT to estimate the evolution of the theoretical maximum life span over time and to derive confidence intervals for the central estimates. We then use time series methods to forecast the highest attained age. We observe a good fit of the model in all populations and subperiods analysed and on the whole life span considered. We estimate an increase in the theoretical maximum life span over time for all populations, more significant in the male subpopulations.

Background: Allergic rhinitis is a common disease whose genetic basis is incompletely explained. We report an integrated genomic analysis of allergic rhinitis. Methods: We performed genome wide association studies (GWAS) of allergic rhinitis in 5633 ethnically diverse North American subjects. Next, we profiled gene expression in disease-relevant tissue (peripheral blood CD4+ lymphocytes) collected from subjects who had been genotyped. We then integrated the GWAS and gene expression data using expression single nucleotide (eSNP), coexpression network, and pathway approaches to identify the biologic relevance of our GWAS. Results: GWAS revealed ethnicity-specific findings, with 4 genome-wide significant loci among Latinos and 1 genome-wide significant locus in the GWAS meta-analysis across ethnic groups. To identify biologic context for these results, we constructed a coexpression network to define modules of genes with similar patterns of CD4+ gene expression (coexpression modules) that could serve as constructs of broader gene expression. 6 of the 22 GWAS loci with P-value ≤ 1x10−6 tagged one particular coexpression module (4.0-fold enrichment, P-value 0.0029), and this module also had the greatest enrichment (3.4-fold enrichment...

The 3PL industry is currently experiencing rapid growth, high fragmentation and intense competition. In order to survive and stay relevant going forward 3PLs need to re-assess their current position in the value network and develop a clear strategy to position themselves as strategic business partners for the long term. This thesis first explores the supply chain challenges and needs of the major stakeholders in the value network. It then tries to create a roadmap identifying the major opportunities which 3PLs should optimize in order to become true value-added service providers and long term strategic business partners in the value network.; by Chee Mun Chew & Denis de Graeve.; Thesis (S.M.M.O.T.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Sloan School of Management, Management of Technology Program, 2003.; This electronic version was submitted by the student author. Can we collapse information asymmetries and add value to networks or demand webs? Real-time operational adaptability is key, especially in fast ‘clockspeed’ industries. Confluence of emerging tools, technologies and standards are required to converge to catalyze the evolution of such adaptable enterprise.; Real-time distributed data, in-network processing, Agent-based autonomy, if taken together, may tame the Bullwhip Effect. Can the (semantic) web catalyze the “Nash Equilibrium” of people and information in our quest for real time "predictive" decision support systems? We will explore a few of these issues and how they may converge and coalesce to enable the adaptive value network of the future.; MIT Forum for Supply Chain Innovation http://supplychain.mit.edu/shoumen

non-peer-reviewed; Open innovation is a paradigm that proposes that firms can and should use external as well as internal innovations/ideas. A popular example of open innovation has been open source software (OSS). The key issues facing organizational decision makers considering OSS strategies is, how does the firm create value for the customer while simultaneously extracting value for itself? However, the adoption of OSS as part of an open innovation strategy is a recent phenomenon and many unanswered questions remain. Taking the viewpoint of seven IS/IT decision makers in European firms, this paper reveals how decision makers considered aspects of value creation, capture, and networking in making decisions on adopting open source software. The findings reveal that while decision makers look to open innovation for value creation and capture, there is still a desire to remain self reliant, resulting in collaborative design (of external innovations) rather than collaborative decision making with value network partners in relation to how such innovations would help create and capture value within firms.

The industrial network framework is discussed from the perspective of capital investment theory. To our knowledge this is the first time that these academic fields are considered together. The theory and method described allow an understanding of the forward projection of firm networks from a specific time, so providing a new way to examine the dynamics of networks. Capital investment decisions are usually irreversible and this creates some assurance concerning the future for parts of the business network. The ‘shadow’ of a past capital investment decision is projected into the future, providing ‘net momentum’. Conversely, the ‘shadow’ of the future acts as a form of ‘environmental power’ that constrains and enables other firms’ interactions in the present. Together these effects have a strong impact on network logic. Value nets are applied as a formal way of bounding parts of the network so that strategic investment decisions can be formalized. A new definition of net centrality is proposed based on a time perspective. Net time centrality is defined by resource connections between firms, with the connections weighted by the remaining investment period at a specific point in time. The variations in investment time periods across the actors in a value net will need to be coordinated for each firm to achieve reasonable returns. The firm with the largest investment in future resources is likely to have considerable strategic control within the value net and so is likely to most strongly influence the timing of change by the firms in the net.; Christopher John Medlin and Kristian Möller

peer-reviewed; This paper aims at examining how firms create and capture value with open source software (OSS). OSS is seen as an excellent exemplar of both peer production and open innovation. Nevertheless, the use of OSS as a form of open innovation is such a recent phenomenon that many unanswered questions still persist. The very concept of OSS represents phenomena that require firms to rethink their strategy as the shift in focus from ownership to one of openness requires a reconsideration of the processes that generate value creation and capture. In responding to this research gap, this paper begins a theory building process for examining OSS value creation and capture. In particular, various theoretical frameworks employed for value creation and capture are explored. The findings of this analysis reveal the importance of a value network for value creation and capture with OSS and the paper concludes by using theoretical propositions to illustrate relationships.

Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited.; In order to quantify any node's capacity to support optimal information flow within a distributed command and control network, a novel node capability value calculation is developed from first principles. The expression for the node capability value is developed using three fundamental building blocks: data throughput, bandwidth efficiency, and the link margin. The data throughput depends on the average packet arrival rate, the probability of not dropping a packet and the probability of correct receiving a packet at the queue. The bandwidth efficiency depends on the node data rate and the transmission bandwidth, while the link margin is a function of the received and required energy per bit to noise power density. The generalized connectivity integrates the computed node capability value by considering all the distributed network connections scaled by their route length and estimating the characteristic tempo, which is the maximum information exchange rate. The generalized connectivity results reflect the amount and quality of detectable information that the nodes can process and transmit about the network. The results also show how the power and bandwidth efficiency of any specific node compares the power and bandwidth efficiency of all the other nodes. A four-node dynamic scenario is simulated and used to numerically evaluate the expression for the node capability value. Command and control tradeoff issues facing battlespace managers and decision makers are examined by including the networks characteristic tempo into a single observe...

In the design of complex systems serving a broad group of stakeholders, it can be difficult to prioritize objectives for the architecture. I postulate that it is possible to make architectural decisions based on consideration of stakeholder value delivery, in order to help prioritize objectives. I introduce the concept of value network models to map out the indirect benefit delivered to stakeholders. A numerical methodology for prioritizing paths through this network model is presented, with a view to discovering the most important organizational outputs. I show how value network models can be linked to architecture models to provide decision support to the architect. I present a case study to examine the connectivity and sensitivity of a test architecture to value delivery. I conclude that a limited subset of NASA's outputs will discriminate between architectures. In this manner, I show how value considerations can be used to structure the design space before critical technical decisions are made to narrow it. A number of organizational implications for value delivery are generated from this analysis. In particular, I show that benefit flows should be aligned to organizational processes and responsibilities, and that failure to map stakeholder input to architecture evaluation can weaken benefit.; by Bruce G. peer-reviewed; The literature indicates that there is urgent need to address the significant gap in our ability to value the contributory interaction of service networks in organisational performance. This paper is primarily concerned with exploring how service (re)configuration is utilised to optimise network performance. The paper will summarise the literature review over the past year in the quest to document how we can understand the contributory value of service innovation networks. It identifies some interesting overlaps in business process management, service science, and network innovation literature. This paper will discuss how failing to account for the value of service networks inhibits our capability to discover and monitor service performance and how this complements the evolvement of service science. This prevents managers from transforming information on network activity and infrastructural capabilities into strategic knowledge. This paper demonstrates how social network analysis (SNA) can be a powerful tool for managers to understand organisational network performance and service interaction.
