The work focuses on the controversy following the event of the epidemic of choleramorbus triggered in the province of Pernambuco in the year 1855, around practices and therapies that have been mobilized to fight the disease. The guiding thread of the analysis are the shocks that have been established between academic medicine and other therapeutic methods - particularly of homeopaths, lay people, blacks and indians. Additionally, the work searches points of intersection between the emergence of a modern project of medicine and religion, accompanying the reflection and practice produced by italian capuchin missionaries on the epidemic.

This essay presents and analyses narratives of professionals who work with indigenous health in Brazil. These narratives discourse on intense and dramatic dilemmas concerning water and bodies. The questions that guided the research were: What happens to health professionals who are directly faced with different concepts of body, health and disease? What happens when health practices occur in the process of translating the very conceptualization of what health is? Are these professionals so subsumed in the world of biomedicine that nothing would modify them from the onset to the end of encounters in which the practices occur in unstable processes of translation? Are agreements established other than those of domination? Are there significant differences between the professionals closer to indigenous contexts and those who do not have this experience?

What is the agenda of Melanesianist anthropology in the era of globalization? I advocate thinking of Melanesia as a site for the ongoing configuration of global flows of images and ideas, capital and commodities, people and technology. The historical and cultural contingencies of this configuration define the specificity of Melanesia. In other words, this configuration defines Melanesia as something less like a fixed geographic location or broad culture area and more like a localized concentration of shifting, not-always-symmetrical social networks within a global web of such networks. Accordingly, a Melanesianist anthropology would ask how social linkages and relationships—old and new—channel a traffic in meaningful forms that is more or less continuous with previous patterns. It would ask, What altered and alternative forms of culture, community, and personhood are emerging at the site called Melanesia? I accordingly propose how a Melanesianist anthropology might evolve by studying the (re)organization of social relationships effected through linkages into unprecedented and large-scale networks. Such an anthropology entails mobile, multi-sited ethnographic research geared toward tracking and tracing global flows as well as intensive...

Dental crown variation was studied in the four main population groups living in Malaysia using dental casts (upper and lower) obtained from 790 individuals. The aims of the study were to characterize variation in 13 dental crown traits, within groups as well as between groups, and to assess affinities between the groups based on frequencies of occurrence of dental features. Using chi-square analysis and Fisher’s exact test, the majority of dental traits were found to be bilaterally symmetrical and to demonstrate low sexual dimorphism. Comparisons of trait frequencies between groups revealed similarities between Malays, Jahai (Negritos) and Chinese who conformed to Mongoloid Sinodont-Sundadont dental patterns, whereas the Indians conformed to an Indo-European pattern. Phenetic distance analysis, using the mean measure of divergence, showed that Indians were markedly separated from the other three groups, while Malays were closer to Jahai than to Chinese. These findings based on dental traits are consistent with historical explanations of affinities between modern Malaysian populations.; Mohd Fadhli Khamis, Jane A. This article begins with a series of discussions on the identification of sacred sites in the locality of Iauaretê, situated on the shores of the middle Uaupés River, between 2004 and 2011, involving the participation of local indigenous leaders and representatives of the National Historical and Artistic Heritage Institute (IPHAN). The work of identifying these sites began with the institute's visit to the region in 2004 and the partnership established with the Federation of Indigenous Organizations of the Rio Negro (FOIRN) and the Instituto Socioambiental (ISA), a non-government organization that has provided advice and support to indigenous peoples of the region for two decades. Following an evaluation of the effects of the listing of the Iauaretê Falls as intangible heritage by IPHAN in 2005, as well as the preservation actions implemented subsequently, the article explores some aspects of the new collaborative dynamics between anthropologists and indigenous researchers/intellectuals which the experience brings to the fore, as well as the specific way in which this phenomenon is manifested in the context of the upper Rio Negro.

The present article aims to make a new reading of the "Marie Curie Case" under the sign of the event. We examine the controversy after the foundation of the Indigene settlement of Itambacuri, Minas Gerais (18831893) on the ways of occupation of the "terrenos ubérrimos" (fertile terrains), an expression used by Capuchin missionaries to describe territories belonging to Jê groups inhabitants of the Brazilian Atlantic Forest bordering the Rivers Doce and Mucuri. Paying special attention to the way how it was created at Itambacuri what here we see as a contest between different programs of cultivate of the landscape. (T. Ingold, 2000). The creation of the Indigene settlement and the assemblages produced, including Indian groups, immigrants and migrants from Brazilian Northeast offer us an opportunity for an Symmetrical Anthropology exercise (Bruno Latour, 1991; Isabelle Stengers, 2002) applied both to the issue of the conditions of producing knowledge about Natural History as to the debate settled at that time between Science and Religion.
