Com a crescente adoção da agricultura de precisão, há uma busca por informações mais detalhadas da variabilidade espacial dos solos em escalas que viabilizem um manejo diferenciado da área de produção. Entretanto, o custo das análises de solo é sem dúvida um dos principais entraves para obtenção dessas informações. A adoção do geoprocessamento, utilizando-se o sensoriamento remoto, GPS e sistemas de informações geográficas para caracterização de solos e quantificação de seus atributos, é um desafio que vem sendo buscado por vários pesquisadores por ser uma tecnologia alternativa de avaliação do solo, podendo ser mais barata, rápida e com menor impacto ambiental. Contudo, como qualquer tecnologia de ponta, ela deve ser devidamente testada e ajustada para os mais diversos tipos de solos e regiões. Para tanto, foram escolhidas áreas localizadas na região de São Carlos e Ibaté, São Paulo, tendo os seguintes objetivos: (i) caracterizar o comportamento espectral de solos por sensores terrestre (FieldSpec) e orbital (ASTER); (ii) determinar alterações no comportamento espectral dos solos ao longo de diferentes toposseqüências; (iii) gerar modelos de quantificação de atributos químicos e granulométricos dos solos a partir de sua radiação eletromagnética e (iv) caracterizar os solos da região conforme a altitude e declividade do terreno utilizando-se técnicas de sistema de informações geográficas. O presente trabalho propõe a implantação de um sistema de consulta por telefone para usuários de transporte coletivo, baseado num Sistema de Informações Geográficas (SIG), oferecendo dentre outras informações referentes ao sistema de transporte público, as rotas ótimas entre origens e destinos informados pelos passageiros. Este sistema se fundamenta em uma base de dados ampla e atualizada, com uma grande gama de informações sobre a rede de transporte público, incluindo: cadastro de logradouros, malha de circulação viária, pontos de parada e itinerários de linhas de ônibus. Escolheu-se como estudo de caso o sistema de transporte coletivo da cidade de São Carlos - SP, cujas principais informações foram obtidas na forma cartográfica e transferidas para o formato digital, via mesa digitalizadora e através de rotinas específicas do software. Os macacos-prego são primatas bastante flexíveis quanto à sua alimentação, ocupando ambientes com características diversas e, por isso, possuindo a mais ampla distribuição geográfica entre os primatas do Novo Mundo. Possuem habilidades como o uso de ferramentas e reconhecimento espacial de sua área de uso na busca por alimentos, utilizando sistemas de orientação egocêntrico e alocêntrico. No entanto, estudos sobre o sistema de orientação desses animais em vida livre, com observação naturalística, são raros. Pelas similaridades filogenéticas e convergências adaptativas com humanos, principalmente no que se refere à variabilidade comportamental associada à diversidade dos ambientes ocupados, pesquisas sobre cognição espacial de Cebus nigritus são necessárias e importantes para investigar se a flexibilidade comportamental desse primata observa-se também quanto às capacidades de orientação espacial. A contaminação da antiga Zona de Uso Predominantemente Industrial 131 (ZUPI 131) em Jurubatuba, São Paulo, levou ao estabelecimento de uma zona de restrição de uso da água subterrânea pelo Poder Público, sendo classificada posteriormente como uma área contaminada crítica. A falta de uma ferramenta que integre os dados ambientais dificulta o trabalho de gerenciamento do problema na escala de trabalho. O desenvolvimento desta ferramenta em SIG, objeto deste trabalho, contribui para a solução dessa demanda e apresenta um modelo conceitual da contaminação da ZUPI 131. O método de trabalho se mostrou adequado para superar as dificuldades de sistematização dos dados e a ferramenta apresentou bom desempenho. Contudo, não foram esgotadas todas as possibilidades de avaliação e processamento de dados, tampouco sua interpretação. A ferramenta possui caráter dinâmico, pode receber maior quantidade de dados e possibilitar novas interpretações e avanços na caracterização da contaminação. As operações espaciais realizadas permitiram identificar áreas prioritárias para futuras investigações; constatar a ausência de registros de informações pretéritas em metade dos empreendimentos; caracterizar rios e córregos como principais zonas de descarga dos aquíferos de porosidade intergranular (sedimentos e saprólito); caracterizar os principais locais de ocorrência de concentrações mais elevadas de solventes clorados; e identificar a existência de concentrações elevadas em alguns poços de abastecimento próximos às áreas que manipularam solventes clorados no passado. The computational program called GIS_EM (Geographic Information System for Environmental Monitoring), a software devised to manage geographic information for monitoring soil, surface, and ground water, developed for use in the Health, Safety, and Environment Division of Paulinia Refinery is presented. This program enables registering and management of alphanumeric information pertaining to specific themes such as drilling performed for sample collection and for installation of monitoring wells, geophysical and other tests, results of chemical analyses of soil, surface, and groundwater, as well as reference values providing orientation for soil and water quality, such as EPA, Dutch List, etc. Management of such themes is performed by means of alphanumeric search tools, with specific filters and, in the case of spatial search, through the selection of spatial elements (themes) in map view. Documents existing in digital form, such as reports, photos, maps, may be registered and managed in the network environment. O presente trabalho aborda a utilização de um Sistema de Informações Geográficas (SIG) - recurso hoje indispensável para a análise de dados espacializados, amplamente utilizada no auxílio à tomada de decisão em diversos campos - como ferramenta de gestão do lodo gerado em Estações de Tratamento de Água (ETA) localizadas em uma mesma bacia hidrográfica. Esta gestão, em geral, é baseada em dados convencionais, ficando a mesma condicionada a informações estáticas. Os custos logísticos de transporte e disposição final em aterro sanitário, na maioria dos casos, são preponderantes em relação aos custos operacionais do sistema de tratamento do lodo. The fast urban growth process is the root of many problems faced by cities of several countries, particularly those in developing countries. The participation of the community in the planning process can help to drive the development of a city for reaching sustainable development and to improve the community quality of life through an organized process. In that context, the combination of Geographical Information Systems and Spatial Decision Support Systems, through an online interface, can provide new perspectives to participatory planning. That is exactly the focus of this paper, in which a spatial decision support model with online community participation is proposed. Its goal is to promote an integrated and sustainable process of urban and transportation planning for Brazilian medium-sized cities by joining together planners, decision makers and the community in the planning process. Nowadays, participatory processes attending the need for real democracy and transparency in governments and collectives are more needed than ever. Immediate participation through channels like social networks enable people to give their opinion and become pro-active citizens, seeking applications to interact with each other. The application described in this dissertation is a hybrid channel of communication of questions, petitions and participatory processes based on Public Participation Geographic Information System (PPGIS), Participation Geographic Information System (PGIS) and ‘soft’ (subjective data) Geographic Information System (SoftGIS) methodologies. To achieve a new approach to an application, its entire design is focused on the spatial component related with user interests. The spatial component is treated as main feature of the system to develop all others depending on it, enabling new features never seen before in social actions (questions, petitions and participatory processes). The dengue viral infection is one of the most relevant vector-borne diseases in the world. The disease can manifest in a variety of forms, from asymptomatic to a condition of dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF). The last reported cases in Brazil correspond to 80% of the cases reported in the Americas, which emphasizes the magnitude of the problem. This study was conducted using Geographic Information System (GIS) techniques, in order to evaluate the spatial distribution of the disease in the urban area of Mossoró, Rio Grande do Norte. In the period between 2001 and 2007, 867 new cases were listed. About 85.7% of the addresses were georeferenced, with a larger number of cases, 14.8%, in the neighborhoods of Santo Antônio and Santa Delmira (north region), and 11.7% in the neighborhoods of Conjunto Vingt-Rosado and Alto de São Manoel (east region). There were 18 confirmed cases of dengue hemorrhagic fever associated with regions with the highest incidence of classic cases of the disease. The use of Geographic Information System (GIS) proved a great benefit for better visualization of the endemic, especially in elucidating the actual distribution of dengue cases in the county and providing an effective tool for planning the monitoring of the disease at a local level.

Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI) is defined as a framework of policies, institutional arrangements, technologies, data, and people that enables the sharing and effective usage of geographic information by standardizing formats and protocols for access and interoperability. The goals of SDI are to: 1) reduce duplication of efforts among governments, 2) lower costs related to geographic information while making geographic data more accessible, 3) increase the benefits of using available spatial data, and 4) establish key partnerships between states, counties, cities, academia, and the private sector. A query and display interface has been developed between the GRASS geographic information system and the SQL-based ORACLE relational database management system (DBMS) . This interface enables multiple non-spatial attributes of GRASS map features to be maintained with the DBMS. GRASS alone is capable of storing only one attribute per feature. The interface allows the user to provide both spatial (GRASS) and non-spatial (SQL) selection criteria for any query. Spatial selection methods include picking items from the GRASS map with a mouse, and specifying areas of interest with user-drawn (via a mouse) polygons and transects. The results of the combined query are displayed both graphically (the selected GRASS map features are highlighted in a graphics window) and textually (the DBMS attribute data are shown in a text display window). Options include creating reclassified maps based on the DBMS output, and updating the attributes retrieved by a query.

The AGRIFISH unit of the Joint Research Centre, European Commission, has now nearly 20 years of experience with crop monitoring in and outside Europe. During this period, a number of research and development activities have been carried out, leading to several operational systems which are all based on spatial information. One of the best known is the MARS Crop Yield Forecasting System (MCYFS) for Europe, which is providing independent quantitative crop statistics at EU and national levels, in near real time. Similar tools have been developed in the last 5 years at a global scale and with the main aim of providing crop status information and yield forecasts in many areas of frequent food insecurity around the world. The most recent example of global crop monitoring system is the Global Water Satisfaction Index (GWSI) currently under development by a JRC project. The models are run directly by JRC or by its contractors, and the output data are disseminated directly or in form of crop monitoring bulletins to food security analysts and food security policy makers everywhere in the world. To make this possible, a huge spatial data distribution structure has been set up and both spatial data and analyzed data are made available to the broad public. Throughout history, humankind has segmented and delineated the geospatial environment in various ways to support administrative, political and economic activities. To date, the majority of spatial boundaries have been constructed in an uncoordinated manner with individual organisations generating individual boundaries to meet individual needs. This practice has resulted in boundary layers that even the most sophisticated GIS (Geographic Information System) technology is unable to cross analyse accurately. Consequently, geospatial information is fragmented over a series of boundary units. The objective of this paper is to investigate new methods for the organisation of spatial data by applying the principles of Hierarchical Spatial Reasoning (HSR), where HSR can be used as the theoretical framework for investigating the hierarchical structuring of space and for providing new methods for accurate data exchange. Also, to present the issues found in the development of a prototype developed for delineating boundaries within the GIS environment. A lot of information on the web is geographically referenced. Discovering and retrieving this geographic information to satisfy various users needs across both open and distributed Spatial Data Infrastructures (SDI) poses eminent research challenges. However, this is mostly caused by semantic heterogeneity in users query and lack of semantic referencing of the Geographic Information (GI) metadata. To addressing these challenges, this paper discusses ontology based semantic enhanced model, which explicitly represents GI metadata, and provides linked RDF instances of each entity. A Geographic Information System (GIS) can be used as a tool in decision making for forest management due to its ability to integrate a large number of variables in order to generate information. The objective of this research was use GIS to spatial representation of competitive stress, diametric increment, structure, recruitment and mortality in individual tree level. The focused area is a fragment of the National Forest of Irati, located in districts of Teixeira Soares and Fernandes Pinheiro, in the Central-South region of Paraná State, Brazil. The data of this research came from permanent sample plots in a remaining of Araucaria Forest maintained without interventions for at least 65 years. The best performance competition index , diametric increment, vertical and horizontal structure for all trees and for the most important species of the forest fragment were represented using GIS, through clustering and consultations of spatial data and forest inventory. The GIS tool allows the spatialization of the competitive stress, the diameter increment and other variables, as well as their combinations in individual tree level. As a result of a first approximation, there are many requirements to take into account: completeness, interactivity, ease of use, modularity, and low costs. Due to the characteristics of the information (spatially located, heterogenic, and provided in different formats) we consider it indispensable to create a spatial information system that is qualified for organizing all available multimedia digital information (2-D images, panoramas, graphics, text documents, and music). While the main objective of this study is to provide a simple tool for the management of historic and artistic heritage in the form of a safeguard plan, the features of the tool created here open up new possibilities for other uses in the future.

The Gulf of Paria is a semi-enclosed shallow basin with increasing coastal development activities along Trinidad ’s west coast.Sediments present a host for trace metal pollutants from overlying waters,therefore determination of their content is critical in evaluating and detecting sources of marine pollution.This paper presents a Geographic Information System (GIS)analysis of geochemical assessment for trace metals in coastal sediments of the Gulf of Paria.This GIS approach facilitates interpretation of the spatial relationships among key environmental processes.The GIS development involves the integration of spatial and attribute data pertaining to bathymetry,current systems,topography,rivers,land use/land cover and coastal sediments.It employs spatial interpolation and retrieval operations to analyze the total trace metal concentrations of aluminum,copper and lead in the sediments and the clay-enriched sediments,to determine whether they are related to sediment type or are affected by the discharge from anthropogenic sources.Spatial distribution modeling of element concentrations are produced to indicate contamination plumes from possible anthropogenic sources such as rivers entering the Gulf of Paria,and to reveal potential hot spots and dispersion patterns.A direct spatial correlation between clay-enriched sediments and high concentrations of aluminum and lead is detected...

The dengue viral infection is one of the most relevant vector-borne diseases in the world. The disease can manifest in a variety of forms, from asymptomatic to a condition of dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF). The last reported cases in Brazil correspond to 80% of the cases reported in the Americas, which emphasizes the magnitude of the problem. This study was conducted using Geographic Information System (GIS) techniques, in order to evaluate the spatial distribution of the disease in the urban area of Mossoró, Rio Grande do Norte. In the period between 2001 and 2007, 867 new cases were listed. About 85.7% of the addresses were georeferenced, with a larger number of cases, 14.8%, in the neighborhoods of Santo Antônio and Santa Delmira (north region), and 11.7% in the neighborhoods of Conjunto Vingt-Rosado and Alto de São Manoel (east region). There were 18 confirmed cases of dengue hemorrhagic fever associated with regions with the highest incidence of classic cases of the disease. The use of Geographic Information System (GIS) proved a great benefit for better visualization of the endemic, especially in elucidating the actual distribution of dengue cases in the county and providing an effective tool for planning the monitoring of the disease at a local level.
