An anthropological view of social relations in the microcosms of a neighbourhood and a health centre reveals the limitations of using material poverty as the sole criterion for understanding processes of social suffering. In order to explore the ways in which social suffering may be experienced through identifications and belonging...

The relationship between the place where we live and our sense of who we are, has on one hand been neglected in social psychology, and on the other, within environmental psychology addressed mainly in the context of personal identity. The main objective of this thesis is to move the comprehension of place into the context of inter-group relationships, using the concepts of social identity and entitativity from social psychology. Specifically, this thesis aims to contribute to understanding the impact of place of residence from two points of view: from the residents’ point of view, place of residence as a basis for self-categorization and identification, leading to phenomena of in-group favouritism and out-group discrimination; and from the observers’ point of view, place of residence as an important source of information for forming impressions about its residentes; ABSTRACT: A importância do lugar onde residimos para a compreensão da nossa identidade tem sido, por um lado negligenciada no âmbito da psicologia social e por outro lado no âmbito da psicologia ambiental abordada essencialmente no contexto da identidade pessoal.

Este contributo para a confirmação da hipótese de Tajfel é discutido no contexto da sua teoria sobre a identidade social e as relações intergrupos.; In recent years, social sciences have often used the social identity concept to describe and explain social behaviour. In Social Psychological research...

The aim of this paper is to describe how the social identity and the emotional climate relate to each other in a rural community, assuming that both constructs are psychological indicators of a healthy collective functioning and that they are somehow affected by the social and political situation of the in-group. For this purpose, a research was undertaken in a rural community of 200 households, where 80 villagers were surveyed. The results suggest that a climate of confidence plays a central role in the constitution of collective identification. They also show that, the greater the perception of this climate is, the more a positive collective self-stereotype, and a greater valuation of belonging to the community, predominate. On the other hand, a climate of low confidence weakens the identification with the community to the extent that it is associated to a lesser valuation and negative self-stereotypical beliefs regarding the community members.

The research presented here - "Valparaíso de Goiás-GO: the place of identity, the identities of the place - 1995/2010" - aims to understand the identity and symbolic relations between the residents of Valparaiso de Goiás and the Federal District. More: expresses the uniqueness of a city whose residents, in a condition of "ubiquity", aims to establish residence in the Federal District. Valparaiso de Goiás has its genesis in the migratory movement to the construction of Brasilia. The capital of the country continues to attract people that want to live there, but cannot settle. The fate of these people is the cities of Brasilia‟s Metropolitan Area - BMA, including Valparaiso de Goiás. Though they fix residence in another city is in Brasilia or in its Administrative Regions - ARs that significant numbers of people search of work and for public equipment of health, education and leisure. It is common for these people to leave the city housing too early and only return at night. Observed the condition of Valparaíso de Goiás, about the supply of labor to the Federal District, notice the position of centrality of this city in relation that district. This peculiarity was named "inverted Centrality." The city, by this logic, is essential to relieve the district space of housing search and labor. The relationships pointed promote an apparent difficulty to establishment between city dwellers of a sense of belonging to it. The problem that led to these reflections was: how to structure the social identity of these people who live in a state of ubiquity? We consider the triangulation of methods as being the one that best meets the objectives of the research. For this we use the Qualitative and Quantitative research plus the Participant Research. At this methodology was added various types of sources and resources that enriched the data collection...

The dissertation studies the relationship between social identity and cultural property, especially the intangible heritage one. This is carried out through the study of specific legislation, focusing on the Robin Hood Act, Minas Gerais, which deals with the transfer of state tax to municipalities that provide attention to their cultural property. The main objective of this study is highlight the social identity as a legitimizing protection of cultural heritage in all its categories and demonstrate that we should not build a pyramid hierarchy between the categories of cultural heritage, and more: that national identity is formed by a myriad of local identities, understood as concepts constructed from conflicts and disputes between these identities, which result in certain political practices. In addition, the study analyses how the law acts constructs imagined communities. This can be seen from the analysis of relevant legislation, as well as in comparison to Brazilian legislation, in particular the mining and the law of "Ciudad Autonoma de Buenos Aires", Argentina. Through this study will be seen that cultural heritage is a field of conflict between identities, and that the public practice in this area are a reflection of this standoff; Essa disserta????o estuda a rela????o entre identidade social e patrim??nio cultural...

peer-reviewed; The central argument put forward in this thesis is that, in the context of acquired brain injury (ABI) social identity matters. The first article is a theoretical paper which reviews an emerging literature that is trying to draw together social psychology and neuropsychology in the study of ABI. This article argues that the social identity approach is an appropriate vehicle for such integration and introduces the concept of identity sub-types based on belonging and based on participation in activities. Social support is recognized as an important factor in rehabilitation following ABI. The second paper is an empirical study which employs the concepts of affiliative and self as doer identities to explore reciprocal relationships between social identity, social support, and emotional status following ABI. Results support a hypothesised model indicating that affiliative identities have a significant indirect relationship with emotional status via social support and self as doer identification. Evidence supports an ‘upward spiral’ between social identity and social support such that affiliative identity makes social support possible and social support drives self as doer identities. The third paper examines relationships between cause of ABI...

This thesis examines the way in which traditional accounts of gender differences in the self-concept have relied on distal explanatory factors, and have thus conceptualised the gendered self as stable across both time and situation. This notion of a stable, gendered self has been implicated as underlying of a range of psychological gender differences (e.g., Cross & Madson, 1997), such as those in moral reasoning (e.g., Gillian, 1982) and ways of knowing (e.g., Belenky et al., 1989). As a result, these behaviours are also seen to be stable across time and context. An alternative perspective is investigated, which looks to social identity theory and self-categorisation theory for a conceptualisation of both gender and the self-concept as being malleable and context-dependent (e.g., Turner et al., 1987). The social identity perspective describes the way in which proximal aspects of the social context affect the expression of gender-related behaviours, attitudes, and beliefs. In this way, the social identity perspective provides an analysis of group membership, group norms, and social influence which can not only account for the differences that are observed between men and women, but can also offer an analysis of the context-dependence of these difference and an approach by which gender differences can be mollified. A series of nine empirical studies are reported...

Although nearly two decades of research have provided support for the social identity approach to leadership, most previous work has focused on leaders' identity prototypicality while neglecting the assessment of other equally important dimensions of social identity management. However, recent theoretical developments have argued that in order to mobilize and direct followers' energies, leaders need not only to ‘be one of us’ (identity prototypicality), but also to ‘do it for us’ (identity advancement), to ‘craft a sense of us’ (identity entrepreneurship), and to ‘embed a sense of us’ (identity impresarioship). In the present research we develop and validate an Identity Leadership Inventory (ILI) that assesses these dimensions in different contexts and with diverse samples from the US, China, and Belgium. Study 1 demonstrates that the scale has content validity such that the items meaningfully differentiate between the four dimensions. Studies 2, 3, and 4 provide evidence for the scale's construct validity (distinguishing between dimensions), discriminant validity (distinguishing identity leadership from authentic leadership, leaders' charisma, and perceived leader quality), and criterion validity (relating the ILI to key leadership outcomes). We conclude that by assessing multiple facets of leaders' social identity management the ILI has significant utility for both theory and practice.; This work has been supported by a grant (FL110100199) from the Australian Research Council awarded to the second author...

peer-reviewed; The thesis examines how social identity processes influence individuals’ experience of political violence. It argues that individual experience is shaped by the groups the individual belongs to. In particular it examines the importance of social identity to understanding prejudice and conflict. The thesis explores extant experimental research which illustrates the importance of social settings in mediating attitudes and behaviour. This includes empirical evidence of the relationships between social identity and social influence, social identity and social support, and the importance of experience of political violence in shaping social identity. The thesis then outlines a brief history of the conflict in Northern Ireland and reviews extant social identity research specific to Northern Ireland. A qualitative methodology was used to extend the literature of quantitative studies carried out within psychology on the conflict in Northern Ireland. In effect, the predominant use of student and random population samples has ignored the broader social context within which participants are located, and has often failed to examine the experiences of those most affected by the conflict. As such the thesis highlights how the positivist scientific method as the sole basis for understanding human behaviour is severely limited. Semi-structured interviews were carried out with 32 individuals...

In a recent article in this journal, Leonie Huddy (2001) asks whether the social identity approach developed by Tajfel, Turner, and their collaborators can "advance the study of identity within political science" (p. 128). She concludes that "various shortcomings and omissions in its research program" (p. 128) hinder the application of the approach to political phenomena. This paper presents a response to Huddy's evaluation of the social identity approach. Several aspects of her account of social identity work are challenged, especially her suggestion that it ignores subjective aspects of group membership. The interpretation of the minimal group paradigm is discussed in detail, as are issues of identity choice, salience, and variations in identity strength. The treatment of groups as process in social identity theory and self-categorization theory is given particular emphasis.

; This work analyzes the recyclable material collectors' social identity, linked to the position they occupy in society as a consequence of their social membership. Focus groups took place with collectors from associations and deposits. Their discourse shows recognition of the stigmas attached to their activity and also that they persist as collectors for lack of other employment opportunities. Associated collectors have a more critical view about their role in society: being an associated collector makes it possible to change their social reality and also the way they are perceived by others. We conclude that collectors cannot envision a chosen...

South Africa has experienced a long history of patriarchal leadership in the spheres of politics, economics and culture as well as in the sphere of religion, in particular. Many factors influence the current state of religious leadership and the accompanying identity formation. This article aims to do a descriptive-empirical investigation into some of these processes of leadership based on feedback from female postgraduate theology students at the Faculty of Theology, Stellenbosch University, South Africa. The empirical results will be read through the lenses of Social Identity Theory, in order to establish, with keen interest, whether the concepts we are using are still adequate and to seek the possibility of new understandings of religious leadership identities that might emerge and ways in which it can become part of curriculum development.
