In the last two decades, a renewed interest on the concepts of social innovation and social entrepreneurship has emerged. In fact, a large body of theoretical developments that occurred in the fields of innovation, territorial development, social economics, and public governance (among others), have emphasised the need to adopt new approaches to new (or emerging) problems, such as: climate change; chronic diseases; increasing inequalities in income distribution; high rates of unemployment (particularly, among young people); the impact of ageing population; and mass urbanisation and social exclusion phenomenon. This paper aims at contributing to these literature by making an attempt to distinguish both concepts: social innovation and social entrepreneurship. For that purpose, the definition of each of these concepts, their main features as well as their major differences are presented. Then, some examples of social innovations are briefly described in order to illustrate that social innovation is a broader concept than social entrepreneurship.

Taking advantage of entrepreneurial talent seems to be of paramount importance for economic development and all over the world plans have been designed to achieve this endeavour. Research involving students at various levels of education and in various courses has been performed by academics worldwide. Empirical studies however have been mostly concentrated on undergraduate students’ intents. Postgraduate student analyses are rare but needed given the widespread fears of unemployment and increasing dissatisfaction with employment at this level. Social entrepreneurship in particular is an area of inquiry which is still in its infancy. Based upon Weerawardena and Mort’s (2006) multidimensional model of social entrepreneurship: SVC = f (I, P, RM) subject to S, SM, E Where SVC: social value creation; I: innovativeness; P: proactiveness; RM: risk management; S: Sustainability; SM – social mission; E: environment We provide a rationale for guiding social entrepreneur coaching along the social business development process at the postgraduate level.

It’s seen as having the potential to solve society’s problems and issues. However, there’s no consensus found on dedicated literature on how to measure impacts and outcomes of this phenomenon nor how to assess and evaluate it, which leads to a hinder in the field’s development. This project intends to apply a model to measure outcomes and impacts, applied to a non-profit organization. Literature review includes topics such as what is social entrepreneurship, its limitations, a comparison with business entrepreneurship, the social entrepreneur and it’s motives and how to attribute value and measure the social enterprise. The Impact Value Chain was chosen from a group of models found in reviewed literature. Deriving from the fact that this is still a recent concept and hence, as authors state, common ground is still narrow, literature regarding evaluation models for social enterprises was found to be scarce and disperse. With the application of Impact Value Chain tool to a non-profit organization, there is an intent to separate social entrepreneurship from business entrepreneurship when it comes to metrics, creating and applying custom tools that bear in mind the specifications of the venture dealt with. Recommendations made in order to further develop this field of study include the learning of social entrepreneurship by managers and decision-makers and creation of measurement models that fit the specifics of the enterprise they intend to assess.; O empreendedorismo social é um conceito recente...

The methodology used is qualitative interviews; in particular, semi-structured questions were addressed to a sample of ten social entrepreneurs, whose answers were transcribed and analysed. The main result is represented by a five-stage pattern followed by social entrepreneurs: each stage is firstly described and further linked to specific challenges that social entrepreneurs face and assets they need during the process. It is fundamental to highlight that some of these stages and challenges are peculiar to social entrepreneurship, differing from regular entrepreneurship. The key conclusion is that it is possible to identify a common pattern that could guide current and future social entrepreneurs. Furthermore, this research paper emphasises best practices and lesson learned from current social entrepreneurs by leaving a powerful heritage to who is interested in make a real change in society.

Background: UNAIDS has called for greater HIV/syphilis testing worldwide just as local HIV/syphilis testing programs are cut or altered. New models are needed to make HIV/syphilis testing services sustainable while retaining their essential public health function. Social entrepreneurship, using business principles to promote a social cause, provides a framework to pilot programs that sustainably expand testing. Methods: We undertook a qualitative study to explore organizational and financial characteristics of HIV/syphilis testing for MSM. Data were collected from men who have sex with men and policy stakeholders in Guangzhou and Hong Kong. Framework analysis was used to identify themes and then code the data.
