A área automotiva cada vez mais incorpora dispositivos e sistemas eletromecânicos na comunicação. Estes dispositivos são baseados nas informações internas e externas coletadas através de sensores específicos. Esta estrutura permite, por exemplo, a automatização de sistemas de transporte em ambientes controlados, monitoramento de veículos, informações de condições de trânsito e outros. Os protocolos de comunicação são fundamentais na troca de dados entre os módulos eletrônicos e certamente, se não fosse pela aplicação desses protocolos, não teríamos a integração de boa parte dos sistemas eletrônicos atualmente disponíveis. A integração dos sistemas de comunicação automotivos através de uma rede de sensores sem fio (RSSF) baseada nas especificações do padrão IEEE 802.15.4 ZigBee, constitui uma alternativa de comunicação nos ambientes automotivos. Além disso, esta integração em ambientes automotivos diminui a quantidade de fiação nos veículos. A aplicação de defensivos químicos em áreas agrícolas é de primordial importância para o rendimento de lavouras. O uso de aeronaves é cada vez mais comum em tal tarefa, principalmente pelo fato de aumentar a agilidade na operação. Entretanto, características climáticas, como intensidade e orientação do vento, podem causar prejuízo aos produtores (e.g. aplicação sobreposta dos defensivos e multas por aplicação de defensivos na borda exterior da lavoura). Essa lacuna motivou este trabalho de mestrado, que tem por objetivo avaliar um sistema integrado de veículos aéreos não tripulados (VANTs) e redes de sensores sem fio (RSSFs) para aumentar a eficiência da aplicação de defensivos químicos em campos agrícolas. Um VANT é utilizado para percorrer o campo enquanto aplica defensivos químicos. Uma RSSF com nós capazes de sensoriar a concentração de defensivos químicos é instalada no solo do campo. Os nós da RSSF e o VANT são equipados com módulos de rádio, possibilitando a troca de informação entre eles. Desse modo, o VANT consegue obter a distribuição de defensivos químicos aplicados no campo, podendo então tomar decisões para aumentar a eficiência da aplicação. A combinação de transdutores e microprocessadores visa facilitar a inserção de um dispositivo, chamado de “sensor inteligente”, em uma rede de comunicação digital, diminuindo os esforços de configuração do mesmo. No entanto, a diversidade de protocolos existentes ou a criação de soluções independentes por parte dos fabricantes dificulta a interoperabilidade desses transdutores, tornando-os pouco flexíveis e mais caros. Dentro desse contexto foi criado o padrão IEEE 1451, que padroniza o hardware e o método de comunicação de um transdutor inteligente. Este trabalho apresenta o desenvolvimento de um sensor inteligente baseado no padrão IEEE 1451. O sensor inteligente desenvolvido é composto de duas partes, o nó sensor e o nó de rede. A comunicação entre essas duas partes é realizada por meio de uma interface sem fio utilizando o protocolo Simple MAC, que opera baseado no padrão IEEE 802.15.4. As principais características do sensor inteligente desenvolvido é a sua capacidade de auto-configuração e auto-identificação quando conectado a uma rede. The good efficiency in a sewage treatment plant (WWTP) is a great importance to the environment. The management of electromechanical equipment installed in these stations is a major challenge due to the fact that they are installed on areas of difficult access and maintenance unhealthy and making the time for the correction of any faults is extended. This paper proposes the development of a Wireless Sensor Network (WSN), in order to monitor electromechanical equipment, allowing the Concessionaire a predictive control in real time. The design of a wireless sensors network for monitoring equipment requires not only the development and assembly of the sensor modules, but must also include the development of software for managing the data collected. Thus, this work includes a Zigbee WSN, small, adapted for monitoring of electromechanical equipment and environmental conditions of a WWTP, type stabilization pond, installed in an area of approximately 0.15 km 2 and the average flow of 320 liters of treatment per second. The experimental results show that this monitoring system can perform with the collection of parameters of performance and quality assessment at the station.

This paper describes the development of a wireless sensor network prototype and its application in a motion capture system based on inertial and magnetic sensors. The system presents a portable and modular architecture and allows the monitoring of several users at the same time using a single wireless network. The target application requires the wireless sensor network to operate efficiently under high loads, since it generates data intensive traffic and needs to support a high number of sensor modules. Other requirements imposed by the application are real-time operation and reliable data delivery. In order to provide the quality of service required by the application, an enhanced version of the LPRT medium access control protocol was developed and implemented in devices compliant with the IEEE 802.15.4 standard at the physical layer. Simulation results show that the proposed modifications improve the performance of the protocol. The present work was performed in the context of the CYCLOPS project, which aimed to exploit the Grid capabilities for Global Monitoring for Environment and Security (GMES) applications. The scenario exploited in the present work was the existence of remote wireless sensor networks, which could monitor and transmit real-time data from remote places, in order to prevent or react more accurately to situations of natural disasters. Considering a Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) as an instrument, we used the DORII middleware to integrate this instrument with gLite-based Grid computing and storage, allowing an effective and user friendly access to the instrument, as it is required by Civil Protection applications. The mentioned goal was achieved by (i) implementing an Instrument Element and several Instrument Managers, which virtualize the WSN; (ii) developing a Custom Java Interface to connect the Instrument Managers with sensors, performing the translation of the commands/data exchanged between them; (iii) implementing additional modules to permit a long duration (or offline) monitoring, saving the observed data in a database; (iv) implementing a Sensor Observation Service, following the OGC standards, providing the users with access to the database.

A typical sensing module is composed of sensors, interface electronics, a radio-frequency (RF) CMOS transceiver and an associated antenna. A 2.4-GHz RF transceiver chip was fabricated in a UMC 0.18 μm CMOS process. The receiver has a sensibility of -60 dBm and consumes 6.3 mW from a 1.8 V supply. The transmitter delivers an output power of 0 dBm with a power consumption of 11.2 mW. Innovative topics concerning efficient power management was taken into account during the design of the transceiver. A solution of individual sensing modules allows a plug-and-play solution. The target application is the integration of a wireless sensor network in smart electronic shirts, for monitoring the cardio-respiratory function and posture.

Esta tese tem como principal objectivo a investigação teórica e experimental do desempenho de um sensor polarimétrico baseado num cristal líquido para medição da concentração de glicose. Recentemente uma série de sensores polarimétricos baseados em cristais líquidos foram propostos na literatura e receberam considerável interesse devido as suas características únicas. De facto, em comparação com outros moduladores electro-ópticos, o cristal líquido funciona com tensões mais baixas, tem baixo consumo de energia e maior ângulo de rotação. Além disso, este tipo de polarímetro pode ter pequenas dimensões que é uma característica interessante para dispositivos portáteis e compactos. Existem por outro lado algumas desvantagens, nomeadamente o facto do desempenho do polarímetro ser fortemente dependente do tipo de cristal líquido e da tensão a ele aplicada o que coloca desafios na escolha dos parâmetros óptimos de operação. Esta tese descreve o desenvolvimento do sensor polarimétrico, incluindo a integração dos componentes de óptica e electrónica, os algoritmos de processamento de sinal e um interface gráfico que facilita a programação de diversos parâmetros de operação e a calibração do sensor. This paper proposes a distributed system for analysis and monitoring (DSAM) of vibrations and acoustic noise, which consists of an array of intelligent modules, sensor modules, communication bus and a host PC acting as data center. The main advantages of the DSAM are its modularity, scalability, and flexibility for use of different type of sensors/transducers, with analog or digital outputs, and for signals of different nature. Its final cost is also significantly lower than other available commercial solutions. The system is reconfigurable, can operate either with synchronous or asynchronous modes, with programmable sampling frequencies, 8-bit or 12-bit resolution and a memory buffer of 15 kbyte. It allows real-time data-acquisition for signals of different nature, in applications that require a large number of sensors, thus it is suited for monitoring of vibrations in Linear Switched Reluctance Actuators (LSRAs). The acquired data allows the full characterization of the LSRA in terms of its response to vibrations of structural origins, and the vibrations and acoustic noise emitted under normal operation. The unintentional injuries due to falls in elderly people give rise to a multitude of health and economic problems due to the growing aging population. The use of early pre-impact fall alarm and self-protective control could greatly reduce fall injuries. This paper aimed to explore and implement a pre-impact fall recognition/alarm method for free-direction fall activities based on understanding of the pre-impact lead time of falls and the angle of body postural stability using an inertial body sensor network. Eight healthy Asian adult subjects were arranged to perform three kinds of daily living activities and three kinds of fall activities. Nine MTx sensor modules were used to measure the body segmental kinematic characteristics of each subject for pre-impact fall recognition/alarm. Our analysis of the kinematic features of human body segments showed that the chest was the optimal sensor placement for an early pre-impact recognition/alarm (i.e., prediction/alarm of a fall event before it happens) and post-fall detection (i.e., detection of a fall event after it already happened). In spite of the great evolution and dissemination of mobile devices and embedded sensors, development of ubiquitous applications is still a complex task mainly due to the great diversity of context information and the abundance of sensor technologies. In this scenario, middleware systems are responsible mediating communication between contextaware applications and sensors. This responsibility envolves many services such as sensor communication protocols, asynchronous communication, context information reasoning. In spite of their importance for mobile context-aware applications, the development of middleware platforms for context provisioning is also a very complex task, specially in terms of sensor module integration to these platforms. This happens due to many factors, such as: i) huge complexity to develop sensor modules; ii) dificulties of reuse of sensor modules; and iii) sensor module life cycle management. The goal of this thesis is the development, implementation and assessment of efficient particle filters (PFs) for various target tracking applications on wireless sensor networks (WSNs). We first focus on developing efficient models and particle filters for indoor tracking using received signal strength (RSS) in WSNs. RSS is a very appealing type of measurement for indoor tracking because of its availability on many existing communication networks. In particular, most current wireless communication networks (WiFi, ZigBee or even cellular networks) provide radio signal strength (RSS) measurements for each radio transmission. Unfortunately, RSS in indoor scenarios is highly influenced by multipath propagation and, thus, it turns out very hard to adequately model the correspondence between the received power and the transmitterto- receiver distance. Further, the trajectories that the targets perform in indoor scenarios usually have abrupt changes that result from avoiding walls and furniture and consequently the target dynamics is also difficult to model. In Chapter 3 we propose a flexible probabilistic scheme that allows the description of different classes of target dynamics and propagation environments through the use of multiple switching models. Numerous applications require a self-contained personal navigation system that works in indoor and outdoor environments, does not require any infrastructure support, and is not susceptible to jamming. Posture tracking with an array of inertial/magnetic sensors attached to individual human limb segments has been successfully demonstrated. The "sourceless" nature of this technique makes possible full body posture tracking in an area of unlimited size with no supporting infrastructure. Such sensor modules contain three orthogonally mounted angular rate sensors, three orthogonal linear accelerometers and three orthogonal magnetometers. This paper describes a method for using accelerometer data combined with orientation estimates from the same modules to calculate position during walking and running. The periodic nature of these motions includes short periods of zero foot velocity when the foot is in contact with the ground. This pattern allows for precise drift error correction. Relative position is calculated through double integration of drift corrected accelerometer data. Preliminary experimental results for various types of motion including walking, side stepping, and running.

Na última década, as redes de sensores sem fio foram alvo de várias pesquisa em diversas áreas, entre elas a Robótica Móvel e Ambientes Inteligentes. Com o uso dessa tecnologia é possível estender as capacidades de sensoriamento de robôs móveis para o ambiente em que se encontram, além de aumentar a abrangência da conectividade sem fio. Devido à grande exploração da área e o grande avanço das tecnologias CMOS, novos módulos de sensoriamento, como câmeras, puderam ser desenvolvidos e embarcados em transceptores de baixo custo. A interconexão dessas fontes compostas de múltiplas mídias deu origem a uma nova tecnologia, as Redes de Sensores Multimídia Sem Fio. The faint fluxes of cosmic neutrinos expected at very high energies require large instrumented detector volumes. The necessary volumes in combination with a sufficient shielding against background constitute forbidding and complex environments (e.g. the deep sea) as sites for neutrino telescopes. To withstand these environments and to assure the data quality, the sensors have to be reliable and their operation has to be as simple as possible. A compact sensor module design including all necessary components for data acquisition and module calibration would simplify the detector mechanics and ensures the long term operability of the detector. The compact design discussed here combines optical and acoustical sensors inside one module, therefore reducing electronics and additional external instruments for calibration purposes. In this design the acoustical sensor is primary used for acoustic positioning of the module. The module may also be used for acoustic particle detection and marine science if an appropriate acoustical sensor is chosen. First tests of this design are promising concerning the task of calibration. "Self Reconfigurable Robots (SRRs) are a system of many simple modules that can rearrange themselves to work together and better perform complicated tasks. They are in theory more extensible then traditional robotics. We investigate the particular problem of using SRRs to both explore and survey an unknown environment. The environment is explored by using the Robots internal sensors, and surveyed by placing a limited number of static sensors at ideal locations. The advantage of SRRs is that they can adapt to terrain difficulty by adjusting the number of individual robots on the field by reorganizing its modules. We test a distributed task driven implementation based on the ALLIANCE architecture in a simulated environment. The results show that SRRs are both able to cooperatively explore the environment as well as place sensors in useful locations, getting good results.

A ZigBee wireless sensor network was developed for monitoring an experimental aquaculture recirculating system. Temperature, dissolved oxygen, water and air pressure as well as electric current sensors were included in the setup. The high fish densities required in these systems to become economically viable present a case where sensor networks can be applied to preserve a healthy livestock and to reduce the risk of failures that end up in the loss of production. Modules for reading and transmitting sensor values through a ZigBee wireless network were developed and tested. The modules were installed in an aquaculture recirculating system to transmit sensor values to the network coordinator. A monitoring program was created in order to display and store sensor values and to compare them with reference limits. An alert is emitted in case reference limits have been reached. E-mail and an SMS message alert can also be sent to the cellular phone of the system administrator, so immediate action can be taken. A web interface allows Internet access to the sensor values. The present work demonstrates the applicability of ZigBee wireless sensor network technology to aquaculture recirculating systems.
