Elderly living in Long-Term Care Institutions for the Elderly (LTCI) live with chronic illnesses and pain, which start/intensify disabilities, hamper the maintenance of daily activities and generative negative perceived health conditions. The study objectives were to analyze the demographic, socioeconomic and health conditions profile of elderly living in LTCI; to estimate the prevalence of disability in basic activities of daily living (BADL) and negative self-assessed health and associated factors. Cross-sectional, analytic study, undertaken between May and August 2012, involving 159 elderly living in LTCI, in the house-home and comprehensive care modalities. The target population in this study included elderly without a severe cognitive deficit (scores ≥13 on the Folstein Mini-Mental State Examination, Folstein Mchugh (1975), who lived in the seven participating LTCI (n=246), three of which were of the house-home and four of the comprehensive care type. The outcome variables were functional disability (assessed through the Katz Index) and negative self-assessed health (bad/vary bad). Depression symptoms were assessed by means of the thirty-point Geriatric Depression Scale and pain intensity through the verbal descriptors scale. The prevalence rates were presented with the respective confidence interval (95%CI). For analysis...

Recent studies on motor learning have shown the effectiveness of the practice that incorporates some form of self-learning and performance of a motor task (JANELLE, 1997; CHIVIACOWSKY & WULF, 2002). In the present study aims to investigate whether the benefits generated by the typical practice self-control subjects are also found in individuals with motor impairment after stroke. The subjects, 26 adults of both sexes, with injury after stroke for at least 6 months, will be divided into two groups. A group of often self-controlled feedback (self) and a yoked group, which will receive feedback in a controlled externally, similar to a group subject to a self-controlled. The task of balance with demand, is to ride a pedal for some distance in the shortest possible time. All attempts to start with the foot contralateral to hemiparesis. A timer will be used to measure the movement time (MT), ie, the time needed to walk with the pedal to the starting line finish line. The research will consist of an acquisition phase, where participants will conduct 20 trials of practice, and a retention phase, 24 hours after the acquisition phase, in which four attempts to hold practice. The subjects of the group self, will be told they can use to support the upper limb support in attempts in which they find necessary.Yoked to subjects in the group...

The new economy has spirited a transformation ofwork organizations from big business structures into smaller, more flexible enterprises, many of which are launched as self-employment initiatives. The growing trend towards increasing selfemployment in Canada demands aeritical review of how educational programs support and encourage entrepreneurship and self-employment opportunities for students ofpost-secondary and adult training programs. The focus ofthis study was threefold. First, the study examined whether a relationship exists between self-directedness and success in self-employment. Secondly, the purpose of this research was to determine whether a relationship exists between psychological type as defined by Jung and success in selfemployment. Finally, this research effort attempted to develop a model for identifying individual potential for self-employment based on combined factors of self-directedness and psychological type. Success was measured in three stages: 1) Did the subject start a selfemployment initiative? 2) Did the business survive six months? 3) Did the business survive one year? The research went beyond classroom training activities to determine whether individuals actually started a business enterprise while participating ina self-employment program designed for individuals who were unemployed. Given that many people initiate a self-employment venture.without actually operating the business beyond the initial start-up...

The self-efficacy-performance relationship in continuous sport tasks has been shown to be significantly reciprocal yet unequal with stronger influences in the performance-to-self-efficacy pathway rather than self-efficacy-to-performance pathway (e.g., LaForge-MacKenzie & Sullivan, 2014b). Bandura (2012) suggested that sociocognitive variables may influence this relationship. Attention as a sociocognitve factor may bias the processing of performance and self-efficacy information (Bandura, 1982, 1997; Bandura & Jourden, 1991). As confidence and attention are important aspects of peak running performance (Brewer, Van Raalte, Linder, & VanRaalte, 1991), the primary purpose of the present study was to examine the self-efficacy-performance relationship under three conditions of attentional focus. The secondary purpose was to examine self-efficacy and performance as separate constructs under the same conditions of attention. Participants ran continuously for one kilometer in one of three randomly assigned attentional focus conditions: internal-focus (n = 51), external-focus (n = 50), and control (n = 49). Self-efficacy was assessed using a one-item measure every 200 meters. Path analyses examining the primary objective revealed significant self-efficacy-to-performance pathways in all conditions: external-focus (p < .05...

In economies characterized by low labor demand and high rates of youth unemployment, entrepreneurship training has the potential to enable youth to gain skills and create their own jobs. This paper presents experimental evidence on a new entrepreneurship track that provides business training and personalized coaching to university students in Tunisia. Undergraduates in the final year of licence appliquee were given the opportunity to graduate with a business plan instead of following the standard curriculum. This paper relies on randomized assignment of the entrepreneurship track to identify impacts on labor market outcomes one year after graduation. The analysis finds that the entrepreneurship track was effective in increasing self-employment among applicants, but that the effects are small in absolute terms. In addition, the employment rate among participants remains unchanged, pointing to a partial substitution from wage employment to self-employment. The evidence shows that the program fostered business skills...

The first part of the study provides contextual background to the financing gaps and associated barriers, which restrict access to finance for HI start-ups. These barriers are driven by both supply and demand sides of the financing equation. Supply side barriers include: high transaction costs associated with financing; high levels of credit risk associated with HI start-ups; high collateral required by financial institutions; non-conducive legal and regulatory environments for investment in HI start-ups; lack of start-up expertise and dedicated resources by financiers; and finance products that are not tailored to HI start-ups needs and circumstances. Demand side barriers include: reliance by HI start-ups on informal financing sources; lack of awareness on the process to apply for funding from formal financing sources; low levels of financial literacy by HI start-ups; and the fear of losing control by involving external investors. This section also contains a broad overview of the country frameworks governing the start-up sector...

This research examines the inter-relationships among entrepreneurial self-efficacy, intrinsic motivation, and entrepreneurial intention as antecedents to entrepreneurial start-up behaviour. The research participants were South African nascent necessity-entrepreneurs. Theoretical foundations for the research are derived from Ajzen’s (1991) theory of planned behaviour. The research design involved a repeated measures longitudinal study over 4.5 years that included an entrepreneurship training, mentoring, and incubation intervention program. This was introduced during the first 12-months of the study. Repeated measures of the variables of interest were collected at T₁ (baseline), T₂ (immediately at the end of the 12-month entrepreneurship intervention program), and T₃ (end-of-study). A structural model comprised of the variables of interest was developed and structural equation modelling (SEM) was used to analyse the data. The research questions addressed centred upon the extent to which entrepreneurial self-efficacy, intrinsic motivation, and entrepreneurial intention were inter-related and the extent to which they contributed toward nascent necessity-entrepreneur entrepreneurial start-up behaviour. The longitudinal nature of the research allowed for an understanding of the dynamic nature of the variables of interest over the three points where measurements were taken. This was important since changes in the means of the three antecedent variables were observed to various degree immediately after the entrepreneurship training...

In this paper we analyse the survival of start-up firms among formerly wage workers in Spain. In particular, we address the question of how long do these workers remain self-employed before entering into unemployment or returning to a new paid-employment, using well-known duration model techniques. Results show that a higher survival rate in self-employment is associated to men, prime-age workers and individuals with higher previous labour turnover. Moreover, longer unemployment spells are found to speed up the rate of transition to non-employment and to reduce that to paid employment. Finally, the probability of exiting decreases with duration in self-employment.

This study aims to analyze the process of semiotic regulation in youth transition to adulthood from the perspectives of cultural developmental psychology and dialogical self theory. The focus is on the transformations that occur in youth’s self-system configurations during a critical developmental period when they start to participate in the world of work. In this paper, we will advance the idea that semiotic regulation may lead to the construction of a future-oriented time perspective – and more specifically, to a new sense of becoming “professional” – through a cycle of production of innovation, leading to the construction of intransitive hierarchies of meaning and creating more flexibility in the self-system. We present a longitudinal case study of three young people who participated in a social project in Salvador, Bahia to illustrate the process. Data was collected through two rounds of in-depth interviews at ages18 (1st round) and 21 (2nd round) years. Analysis followed a mapping of positions and counter-positions, as well as emerging tensions and their resolution over time and in different spheres of life (i.e. work and family life). The idea is to show how negotiations of self-positions evolve and activate a mechanism of hierarchical integration and differentiation of meanings...

This study explores the inter-relationships among the entrepreneurial self-efficacy, entrepreneurial intentions and a newly developed concept: perceived accessibility of resources in a Chinese village context for both entrepreneurs and non-entrepreneurs. This is an important area of research because most research that focuses on these types of constructs occurs in a Western context. Yet, the importance of China in world economic affairs is growing exponentially and China would not be the economic power that it is without the entrepreneurial spirit engendered in village communities. Although entrepreneurship in Chinese cities contributes significantly to economic development, Chinese village entrepreneurship is the backbone of Chinese economic development. From an entrepreneurship perspective, understanding the entrepreneurial mind of two groups is important for economic development. First, there are those who are not current entrepreneurs who want to start new businesses (referred to as "nascent entrepreneurs"), and second, those who are already entrepreneurs who could potentially start other new businesses and become serial entrepreneurs. Within the Chinese village context, it is the individual entrepreneur who drives the entrepreneurial process. Thus...

This retrospective study aimed to analyze the blood capillary glucose at home and the number of hypoglycemic and hyperglycemic episodes presented by persons with Diabetes Mellitus, at the start of, and at least six months after beginning to participate in, the Blood Glucose Self-Monitoring Program. A total of 97 service users with diabetes participated, from a municipality in the non-Metropolitan region of the state of São Paulo. Two spreadsheets were used for recording the blood glucose values at the start of the Program and after a minimum of six months. It was observed that there was an improvement in the postprandial blood glucose level (lunch) and in the very early morning (p<0.05). In relation to hypoglycemic episodes, there was a slight improvement in the mean, from 0.75 at the beginning to 0.49 after a minimum of six months' participation in the Program. The reduction of hyperglycemic episodes was, in the beginning, of 27.88% episodes and, at a minimum of six months' participation in the Program, of 29.15% episodes.

Self-deception has been studied by philosophers and psychologists for some time. Frenkel-Brunswik (1939) published the first psychology paper. In Triandis (2009, p. ix) there are references to 24 papers by philosophers and psychologists that examined this concept. All humans have self-deceptions, some more frequently than others. That is, they see the world the way they would like to be rather than the way it is. As I thought about the concept over the years I believe that the most important point for understanding self-deception is to examine what percentage of the information that humans use when constructing (Taylor, 1998b) the way they see the world comes from inside their body or from outside their body. If most of it comes from inside their body there is a high probability that they have a self-deception. The information from inside the body consists of emotions (e.g., hopes), needs (e.g., hunger pangs), desires (e.g., imagined attractive objects), cognitive systems (e.g., prejudices, stereotypes, in-group preferences), memories (e.g., we are descendents of heroes), theories, ideologies, and elements of subjective culture acquired during socialization. The information from the outside the body is reality, and captures aspects of the ecology. Geography...
