The attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder is a neurodevelopmental disorder provided in the International C lassification of Diseases (ICD) characterizing a continuing pattern of attention deficit and/or hyperactivity/impulsivity with more intense and higher rates than what presented by individuals at the same development level. This dissertation was organized u sing the models of scientific articles analyzing the results from school performance by students of the Colégio de Aplicação (a school maintained by a university) of the Federal University of Goiás, 7 to 14 age group with and without ADHD diagnosis. Initia lly, the prospective observational study to assess comparative effectiveness involved 355 students and investigated the results from school performance by 60 of them before and during Methylphenidate - based treatment (MPH) and psychotherapy compared with th e control group. The students had their school performance and treatment adherence monitored for the first eight months. The literature review on the theme is presented in the first article submitted to the journal “Revista Ciência & Saúde Coletiva” (Journ al of Science and Collective Health), entitled “ Methylphenidate - based treatment and school performance by students with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder : integrative literature review”. The review included scientific articles published from 2006 to 2013. Six hundred and sixteen out of the 629 articles found did not meet the criteria for inclusion and 13 were part of the sample. Most of the studies emphasized that the group of children with ADHD undergoing methylphenidate - based treatment improved the ir performance compared with the group of children with ADHD with no records for the treatment and stimulant - based therapies are more beneficial in the long term. CHDS State/Local; The advancement and access of technology by terrorism subjects who plan and operate from under-governed or lawless lands has forced the U.S. to consider the demands the international threat environment places upon its security. More importantly is how the U.S. will adapt to meet these threats, prevent attacks and convict those who mean to do the nation harm. This thesis contends the modern day terrorism threat falls within the seams of the military, intelligence and law enforcement disciplines. The threat requires the fusion of these elements of national power to prevent attacks, collect vital intelligence and facilitate the use of key evidence to achieve substantive convictions. In order to achieve convictions the need for damming evidence is essential. However, with the fusion of the military, intelligence and law enforcement disciplines comes the problem of utilizing classified information as evidence to achieve end game convictions of capture terrorist subjects. The recommendations in this thesis can facilitate the use of classified intelligence as evidence by establishing a legal U.S. preventative detention system, a full and permanent integration of FBI personnel with SOCOM assets and establishing NCTC as a central planning and coordinating organization with the authority to direct counterterrorism operations.

CHDS State/Local; First responders have struggled to incorporate strategic direction provided by the federal government into their existing plans. An urgent call for teamwork and cooperation has changed the landscape for America's first responders. They have been required to shoulder new responsibilities and become more networked and interactive with their peer disciplines to achieve higher levels of performance and response capability. This thesis examines interactions among four key homeland security disciplines in the Seattle, Washington urban area. It evaluates how fire service, law enforcement, emergency management, and public health organizations have used federal government guidance and programs to prepare for catastrophic terrorism response. Specifically, it describes how the homeland security roles, organizational cultures, and collaboration challenges currently facing local public safety agencies have impacted the urban area environment. Based on findings from local and national inquiries, it explains how the National Incident Management System (NIMS) and the National Planning Scenarios (NPS) have impacted interagency collaboration. This study provides a detailed description of the homeland security environment from the inside by identifying challenges facing first responders and the strengths and gaps in their relationships. Finally...

Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited; The United States Army is currently developing and testing Force 11, an attempt to redesign itself by the early years of the 21st Century to incorporate digital technology and advanced weaponry. In 1996, the United States Training and Doctrine Command mandated that all combat service support disciplines be automated to the greatest extent possible. Concurrently, the Deputy Chief of Staff for logistics, United States Materiel Command, and the Combined Arms Support Command (CASCOM) developed a future strategic vision of seamless logistics support. To support this vision, CASCOM has proposed the implementation of the Integrated Combat Service Support System (ICS3) as the Army's single seamless combat service support management system. ICS3 will be a system of systems that automates the combat service support disciplines of man, arm, fuel, fix, move, and sustain. Specifically, the combat service support discipline of fuel will be incorporated in ICS3 as the Fuel Automated Subsystem. This thesis analyzes current Army petroleum operations, identifies petroleum accountability and management procedures as the target domain for automation, and develops the respective software system requirements. From the software system requirements...

Third Annual Acquisition Research Symposium; Those familiar with the Naval Postgraduate School's Acquisition Research Program know that, since its inception in 2003, we have promoted the idea of big A Acquisition as a core theme. This term is intended to highlight Acquisition's inherent complexity as an endeavor that entails a variety of challenges, including political, managerial, technological and--in the case of defense Acquisition--military challenges. It also highlights the need for research from a variety of disciplines to be brought to bear in order to meet these challenges. The NPS Acquisition Research Program's purposeful pursuit of big A Acquisition research is evident in these Proceedings. Disciplines and fields of study which are represented include contract management, project management, logistics and supply chain management, systems engineering, economics, public management and policy, financial management, information systems, and organizational behavior. While research in a few other disciplines (e.g., personnel management) has yet to be tapped, the engagement of such a wide range of approaches represents, in our view, significant progress. The past year marked the coming of age of the Acquisition Research Program. By every measure...

CHDS State/Local; Homeland security was changed by the events of September 11, 2001, including how we make life and death decisions. Terrorism, all hazards, and public health issues increase the number of decisions involving the expenditure of civilian lives. These Considered Risk Casualties are akin to the military concept of "acceptable losses." Homeland security professionals have little or no experience, let alone guidance, in decision making under circumstances that bring this condition to the civilian population. Other disciplines such as philosophy, theology, bioethics, and the military, etc. have examined principles that are involved in the concept of accepting loss of life and have identified theoretical circumstances under which acceptance is achieved. Homeland security has had little discussion of these matters and virtually no criteria to support such decision making. Examining the observations, and how those disciplines test the concept, can inform and assist homeland security practitioners when having to make these decisions. Examining homeland security events that addressed loss of life can expand the range of scenarios those disciplines use for their analysis. An educational process that draws on other sectors' experience can serve to improve decision making capabilities. Future research opportunities exist within and external to homeland security and those disciplines'; Port Authority of New York and New Jersey author (civilian).

The importance of education to the socioeconomic and political development of nations is widely discussed in the education policy literature. This study seeks to identify the good policies and practices that lead students in some municipal school systems in Brazil to obtain better results than would be expected based purely on socioeconomic factors. This report is divided into four sections. The next section, section two, explains in detail the rationale and motivation for the study. Section three explains the conceptual framework for the qualitative field research. It provides a succinct but detailed explanation of the methodology used, elaborating on issues such as the definition of study samples and the design of the field research instruments. Section four presents the main results of the analysis and identifies the principal education policy factors that appeared to help some municipal school systems obtain better-than-expected Prova Brasil results. Section five presents 12 municipal 'success stories' in a loose narrative format. These narratives serve as examples of how different combinations of good practices can translate into results in a variety of actual situations. Lastly...

Using a rich data set of almost the entire population of Ukrainian secondary schools, the authors estimate the effect of school size and class size on the performance of secondary schools on Ukraine's External Independent Test. They find that larger schools tend to have somewhat better performance, both in terms of test scores and in terms of test participation. The size of this effect is relatively small, however, especially in rural areas for which the estimates are likely to be more clean estimates. Class size is found to be insignificant in most specifications and, if significant, of negligible size.

As the global economy rapidly changes and new technologies are introduced, more highly skilled workers are required. In the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS), firms struggle to fill skilled positions due to a lack of qualified candidates, while the number of unemployed low skilled workers is growing. This report is organized into six chapters. After this brief introduction, the second chapter makes the argument for why skills matter to the OECS countries. The subsequent three chapters emphasize how education (school) is intrinsically linked to the labor market, both in providing initial preparation and training and in updating workers' skills throughout adulthood (lifelong learning). Thus, the third chapter discusses how adequately the schools in the OECS prepare youth for the labor market. The fourth chapter focuses on the transition from the education system to the labor market. The fifth chapter analyzes the opportunities for workers to continue learning while in the labor force. The final chapter summarizes the main policy recommendations for improving education and training in the OECS. Three transversal themes run through the report: (i) deepening sub-regional collaboration; (ii) increasing involvement of the private sector in education and training; and (iii) enhancing collaboration across different levels of the education and training systems.

The Indian Green Revolution, which began in the late 1960s, offers an exemplary case for studying the nature of evidence and how it travels between academia and the public sphere, between different academic disciplines and over time. Initial assessments of the Green Revolution’s effects were generally positive; yet by the mid-1970s, a more negative view of its impact had come to prominence. By the 1990s this view was, in turn, being displaced by a more optimistic one. The aim of this paper is not to evaluate the impact of the Indian Green Revolution, but rather to examine how the different constituencies of the social science community have communicated with one another on this topic and to examine what facts about it have travelled over time and between the different social science disciplines. By their very nature different social science disciplines are concerned with different aspects of any given issue: an economist might be interested in the impact on output and income over time, whilst a sociologist might be more concerned with the impact new technology has on existing social relations, and a geographer on the use of land and water. Through an in-depth analysis of 76 articles published between 1969 and 2004 in journals covering the range of social science disciplines...
