Since the 80s huge efforts have been made to utilize renewable energy sources to generate electric power. An important issue about using renewable energy sources is a Distribution Management System (DMS) in presence of dispersed generators. This paper reports some aspects of integration of the dispersed generators in the DMS. Besides, an investigation of impact of the dispersed generators on the overall performances of the distribution systems in steady state is performed. In order to observe losses in the distribution networks with dispersed generators, several loss allocation methods are applied. Results obtained from case study using IEEE test network, are presented and discussed. © 2003 IEEE.

The concept of “Virtual Renewable Power Plants - VRPP” enables several positive factors for the electric integration of Renewable Energy Sources (RES), namely (a) the smoothing of time based fluctuation of the power delivered by the RES, (b) the use of the natural complementary of renewable resources availability (c) the establishment of synergies between different RES as well as the combination of their production. The present work aims to identify the synergies between wind and photovoltaic (PV) plants, regarding their daily profiles l complementarity and resource availability; as well as the technical and economic added value of a VRPP. Results show an increase of 5.3% in the capacity factor when 2 MWp of PV is added to an 8 MW wind farm, considering all infrastructural capacity limits. Moreover, additional results include the characterization and optimization of hybrid virtual wind-PV plants production profile.

The Central America Regional Electricity Market (MER) trades electricity and transmission capacity among six Central American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and Panama. The market differs from other electricity markets worldwide because it has its own regulatory body and system operator. Economic integration of the Central American countries has followed a natural evolution. The objective of this study is to carry out a country-by-country analysis of the power and gas sector demand and supply picture in order to assess opportunities for regional energy integration in the Mashreq and neighboring countries, and to identify specific interconnection projects that may require support from the World Bank and other international financiers. The study is conducted in the context of the World Bank Arab World Initiative. Although the present study focuses on Mashreq countries, issues of regional integration are intertwined among various Middle East and North Africa (MENA) sub-regions, and Turkey with eventual integration with Europe, so Mashreq is not considered in isolation. There are two other parallel efforts to examine the energy integration potential in the Maghreb and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. In addition, the World Bank and its partners are implementing a major solar power initiative with support from the Clean Technology Fund (CTF) to assist the MENA countries with development of large scale concentrated solar power (CSP) electricity generation capabilities for their own use or for export to other countries. Large scale development of solar power is expected to support and facilitate regional integration among MENA countries and with Europe as well.

This document presents the highlights of speaker presentations, breakout groups, ensuing discussions, conclusions, and next steps as presented at the International Grid- Connected Renewable Energy (RE) Policy Forum. The conferences purpose was to facilitate increased use of grid-connected RE in the developing world. In the course of the three-day meetings, speakers and participants addressed the challenge of scaling up the use of RE for grid power supply. The interactive forum was designed to focus on four core topics: 1) incorporation of RE in power sector frameworks; 2) economic valuation of RE; 3) RE policy instruments; and 4) private sector investment in RE. The Arab countries have enjoyed sustained economic growth in recent years, and the high economic growth has triggered a rapid increase in energy demand, particularly for electricity. By the end of 2013, 144 countries both developed and developing had established plans for the expansion of power generation from renewable energy (REN 21). In setting these goals, countries are driven by a number of strategic considerations, including energy security, reducing pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, the need to expand and improve energy services for growing populations, and industrialization and job creation. This report summarizes the results of a recent review of the emerging experience with the design and implementation of policy instruments to promote the development of renewable energy (RE) in a sample of six representative developing countries and transition economies ('developing countries') (World Bank 2010). The review focused mainly on price- and quantity-setting policies, but it also covered fiscal and financial incentives, as well as relevant market facilitation measures. The lessons learned were taken from the rapidly growing literature and reports that analyze and discuss RE policy instruments in the context of different types of power market structures. The development of wind-and solar-generating capacity is growing rapidly around the world as policy makers pursue various energy policy objectives. This paper will describe the challenges in integrating wind and solar generation, the lessons learned, and recommended strategies from both operating experience and integration studies. Case studies on the experience with wind and solar integration in China, Germany, and Spain are also included in this paper. The paper is organized as follows. First section summarizes worldwide wind and solar development, the challenges in integrating wind and solar generation, and some of the lessons learned from studies designed to evaluate the impact of higher levels of wind and solar generation and also from the operational experience in some countries with larger amounts of renewable energy. The second section summarizes some of the solutions for incorporating higher levels of wind and solar capacity into short-term system operations. This section also explains basic methodologies to implement system operations studies to understand the impacts of variability in system operation. Improving California Investor Owned Utilities Procurement Practices: The Need to Include Integration Costs in Renewable Energy Resource Selection

By 2020, 33% of California’s electric power sales will come from renewable energy sources due to California’s Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS). This implies a 359% increase, from 23,000 GWh to more than 80,000 GWh, in renewable energy generation since 2002. Also by 2020, 21% of the sales will be from intermittent renewable resources (IRRs) that will incur integration costs due to required flexible ramping resources to balance power supply and demand of the California grid. The key parties implementing the RPS are divided on the integration cost values of IRRs. The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) requires that IOUs use a zero value for integration costs. This results in an inaccurate Net Market Value, a critical component in selecting new renewable resources. IRR generators also support a zero integration cost to avoid a diminution in value. Investor-Owned Utilities (IOUs) support a non-zero cost adder to ensure all costs are accounted to deliver the most cost-effective reliable energy to customers. Firm and reliable renewable energy generators prefer a non-zero cost adder to value dependable energy delivery. The amount of wind power and other timevariable non-dispatchable renewable energy sources (VRES) such as photovoltaics (PV) is rapidly increasing in the world. Several power systems in Europe are already facing a very high penetration from variable renewables which is posing concerns on the operational stability limits that are being surpassed for extreme RES generation conditions. Most transmission system operators are defining VRES limits of penetration, thus, requiring the renewable energy excess to be curtailed, exported or stored. Energy storage may play a relevant role in maximizing the long term penetration of VRES if used as a technical mean to regulate the daily, weekly and annual profiles of variable generation (VG). This paper reviews the storage technologies that are available and may be used on a power system scale and performs a cost/benefit analysis discussing their advantages and disadvantages for the integration of fastgrowing renewables, such as wind power and PV.

The amount of wind power and other timevariable non-dispatchable renewable energy sources (RES) is rapidly increasing in the world. A few power systems are already facing very high penetrations from variable renewables which can surpass the systems’ consumption during no-load periods, requiring the energy excess to be curtailed, exported or stored. The limitations of electric energy storage naturally lead to the selection of the well-known form of storing potential energy in reservoirs of reversible hydropower stations, although other technologies such as heat storage are also being used successfully. This paper reviews the storage technologies that are available and may be used on a power system scale and compares their advantages and disadvantages for the integration of fast-growing renewables, such as wind power, with a special focus on the role of pumped hydro storage.
