This research is the result of ethnographic observations about a proposed cut to a partic-ular frame of transnational migratory movement. From the approach of a specific case...

The genus Capsicum is New World in origin and represents a complex of a wide variety of both wild and domesticated taxa. Peppers or fruits of Capsicum species rarely have been identified in the paleoethnobotanical record in either Meso- or South America. We report here confirmation of Capsicum sp. residues from pottery samples excavated at Chiapa de Corzo in southern Mexico dated from Middle to Late Preclassic periods (400 BCE to 300 CE). Residues from 13 different pottery types were collected and extracted using standard techniques. Presence of Capsicum was confirmed by ultra-performance liquid chromatography (UPLC)/MS-MS Analysis. Five pottery types exhibited chemical peaks for Capsicum when compared to the standard (dihydrocapsaicin). No peaks were observed in the remaining eight samples. Results of the chemical extractions provide conclusive evidence for Capsicum use at Chiapas de Corzo during a 700 year period (400 BCE–300 CE). Presence of Capsicum in different types of culinary-associated pottery raises questions how chili pepper could have been used during this early time period. As Pre-Columbian cacao products sometimes were flavored using Capsicum, the same pottery sample set was tested for evidence of cacao using a theobromine marker: these results were negative. As each vessel that tested positive for Capsicum had a culinary use we suggest here the possibility that chili residues from the Chiapas de Corzo pottery samples reflect either paste or beverage preparations for religious...

Rift Valley fever (RVF) is an important mosquito-borne viral zoonosis in Africa and the Middle East that causes human deaths and significant economic losses due to huge incidences of death and abortion among infected livestock. Outbreaks of RVF are sporadic and associated with both seasonal and socioeconomic effects. Here we propose an almost periodic three-patch model to investigate the transmission dynamics of RVF virus (RVFV) among ruminants with spatial movements. Our findings indicate that, in Northeastern Africa, human activities, including those associated with the Eid al Adha feast, along with a combination of climatic factors such as rainfall level and hydrological variations, contribute to the transmission and dispersal of the disease pathogen. Moreover, sporadic outbreaks may occur when the two events occur together: 1) abundant livestock are recruited into areas at risk from RVF due to the demand for the religious festival and 2) abundant numbers of mosquitoes emerge. These two factors have been shown to have impacts on the severity of RVF outbreaks. Our numerical results present the transmission dynamics of the disease pathogen over both short and long periods of time, particularly during the festival time. Further, we investigate the impact on patterns of disease outbreaks in each patch brought by festival- and seasonal-driven factors...

The events of the last few years have directed even more attention to the relationships among religion, education and social cohesion in the context of development in Asia. There is, therefore, a need to consider the combined role of religion and education in fostering a more holistic form of development without concurrently fanning flames of ethnic, religious and other kinds of conflicts. This book discusses the relationship between religion, the role of education in generating social capital and its impact on the development of society. It draws on papers presented at an interfaith workshop co-hosted by the World Bank and the Centre for Research on Islamic and Malay Affairs (RIMA). The dialogue took place in Singapore on 27-28 October 2001, with the participation of some 50 experts from Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. The book describes the rich group of partners associated with this dialogue, their call to move beyond the discourse of dialogue and the imperative to start practicing it. It conveys an effort to learn from both sides. It lays out the debates of scholars who see education as a major instrument for fostering knowledge and skills -- with the purpose of improving knowledge sharing...

This dissertation is a comparative analysis of the gift and how it impacts on interpersonal relationship among the Yoruba of Nigeria. The dissertation examines gift exchange as it is practiced among the worshippers of Ògún deity usually commemorated as an annual Olójó festival in comparison with Christ Way Church International a member of Pentecostal Charismatic group in Ilé-Ifè. In particular, the dissertation analyses a) the gift, its definition and the theoretical propositions by the anthropologists and sociologists and the principles that govern its practice; b) ethnographically, the Yoruba experience and expression of the gift, at the social, political, economic and ritual levels of interaction among immediate group and with other group of people; c) the patterns of interpersonal relationship that exists between the Òrìsà worshippers and Pentecostal Charismatic Christians using the two focused religious groups in Ilé-Ifè as test case; d) how gift exchange practices can be means of creating and maintaining boundaries, and how that can lead to identity formation between different religious groups; in short how gift and reciprocity can be means of exclusion by bringing Annette Weiner’s Inalienable Possessions in conversation with Marcel Mauss’s The Gift; e) the different senses and contexts in which the religious groups can use gift exchange practices to bring about solidarity and harmony in the Yorùbá society.

Art??culo pendiente de publicar en la revista "Translation and Literature" (Edinburg University Press).; James Mabbe is arguably the most eminent among early modern English Hispanists. His translations included Fernando de Rojas???s La Celestina, Cervantes???s Novelas ejemplares, and an influential rendering of Mateo Alem??n???s Guzm??n de Alfarache. This article aims to focus on less known translations, and to demonstrate that a proper understanding of Mabbe???s career and production requires a careful analysis of his context and his contacts. A survey of Mabbe???s intriguing political, religious and diplomatic connections will provide new insights into his career. Thus, the political activities of his patrons???e.g. Sir John Digby, 1st Earl of Bristol, or Sir John Strangways???will show his work under a new light. A comparative chronology of his publications and activities with political and religious controversies in Madrid and in London, hand in hand with an examination of unpublished manuscript material, will contribute to provide plausible hypotheses about the agenda that lurked behind his choice of texts and patrons, as well as about the controversial topic of Mabbe???s religious allegiance. This survey will display Mabbe???s activities as part of larger networks of publishers...

About the 23rd of the 10th month the caravan starts for Mecca on its pilgrimage to bring this carpet and put it over the Ka'ba, the cube form building over the black stone in the Sacred Mosque. The old covering is stripped off once a year and sold in bits to the pilgrims for charms. This departure of this caravan is the greatest event of the year in Cairo and the entire population turns out to witness it, and all strive to come to the front and touch it, which act will give them a blessing for their life time. We see only the escort composed of soldiers riding in front on horses. The people look back toward the carpet behind carried by a camel. A great number of pilgrims also on camels follow it. How does participation in a long-duration mass gathering (such as a pilgrimage event) impact well-being? There are good reasons to believe such collective events pose risks to health. There are risks associated with communicable diseases. Moreover, the physical conditions at such events (noise, crowding, harsh conditions) are often detrimental to well-being. Yet, at the same time, social psychological research suggests participation in group-related activities can impact well-being positively, and we therefore investigated if participating in a long-duration mass gathering can actually bring such benefits. In our research we studied one of the world's largest collective events – a demanding month-long Hindu religious festival in North India. Participants (comprising 416 pilgrims who attended the gathering for the whole month of its duration, and 127 controls who did not) completed measures of self-assessed well-being and symptoms of ill-health at two time points. The first was a month before the gathering commenced, the second was a month after it finished. We found that those participating in this collective event reported a longitudinal increase in well-being relative to those who did not participate. Our data therefore imply we should reconceptualise how mass gatherings impact individuals. Although such gatherings can entail significant health risks...

The religious feasts, in a general set, are related to the celebrations and tributes done to the worshiped deities in any other religious follow-up. The present study emphasizes the religious feasts as a social cultural practice that spatializes in Goiás State. The feasts space materializes itself in the scenery, in the territory and in the territorialities construction. The chosen places to the research development are the villages of Muquém and Posse D Abadia, respectively set in the goiano boroughs of Niquelândia and Abadiânia and the town of Trindade. The catholic religious feasts are manifestations that boost these boroughs spaces, revealing, in their organization, a religious identity expressed in the studied places territory. The work main goal is the comprehension of how it occurs the patron feasts spatialization and its reflexes in the formation and structuration of the goiano territorial and cultural space. With this study it is searched to present a theoretical-methodological reflection about the patron feasts traditions that sustain a territorial identity in the State. For this identity, the patron is the faith, territory and the feast centrality. The territory is built and donated to the patron, which domain is effective with the possession and the power as protector of the mentioned places. The territorial identity is placed as a religious identity assigned to this patron. The formed identity...

This article analyzes the Círio [candle-lit procession] and the Feast of Our Lady of Nazaré as a great collective rite that combines formal and devotional aspects with the profane informality of a Brazilian festival. This article is an exercise in comprehending a catholic festival and, at the same time, it is a reflection on the anthropologic work, as it presents already published texts. These previous studies, based on fieldwork conducted in 2000 and 2002, argue that this festival, particularly the roast chicken auction, would be enlightened by Marcel Mauss’s theory of the gift and an analysis in which the chicken would be regarded as a comic representation of society. Considering the way by which Círio de Nazaré presents itself nowadays, at the height of the annual festive calendar in Belém do Pará (Brazil), it is remarkable to see the combined presence of a festive model historically and spatially materialized in town since the 80’s: the brega feasts circuit. Linking entrepreneurial initiative (the owners of clubs and machine-sound enterprises) to the festive and leisure ambiance in the outskirts of town, the brega feasts circuit is present surrounding or reaching the core of the great religious event. This article is intended to discuss the modes by which the "brega feasts" have matched up the dynamics of Nazaré Festival, considering its physical and symbolic scope in town. The departure point is that the festive experience absorbed by attendants to the bregueiro circuit is connected to the festive practice of great urban events, reinventing the meaning of the typical way of public celebration in Belém.; Ao considerar a forma como se apresenta atualmente o Círio de Nazaré, ponto alto do calendário festivo anual de Belém, torna-se visível a presença nos seus interstícios de um modelo festivo consolidado histórica e espacialmente na cidade desde o início dos anos 80: o circuito das festas de brega.
