1. We studied the release of [3H]-dopamine and [3H]-noradrenaline (NA) from hippocampal synaptosomes induced by glutamate receptors and the associated Ca2+ influx through Ca2+ channels. The release of tritiated neurotransmitters was studied by use of superfusion system and the intracellular free Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]i) was determined by a fluorimetric assay with Indo-1 as a probe for Ca2+. 2. Presynaptic glutamate receptor activation induced Ca(2+)-dependent release of [3H]-dopamine and [3H]-NA from rat hippocampal synaptosomes. Thus, L-glutamate induced the release of both neurotransmitters in a dose-dependent manner (EC50 = 5.62 microM), and the effect of 100 microM L-glutamate was inhibited by 83.8% in the presence of 10 microM 6-cyano-7-nitroquinoxaline-2,3-dioxine (CNQX), but was not affected by 1 microM (+)-5-methyl-10,11-dihydro-5H-dibenzo[a,d]-cyclohepten-5,10-imine (MK-801). 3. Other glutamate receptor agonists also stimulated the Ca(2+)-dependent release of [3H]-dopamine and [3H]-NA as follows: N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA), at 200 microM, released 3.65 +/- 0.23% of the total 3H catecholamines, and this effect was inhibited by 81.2% in the presence of 1 microM MK-801; quisqualate (50 microM), S-alpha-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolopropionic acid (AMPA) (100 microM) or kainate (100 microM) released 1.57 +/- 0.26%...

It is widely assumed that optimal timing of larval release is of major importance to offspring survival, but the extent to which environmental factors entrain synchronous reproductive rhythms in natural populations is not well known. We sampled the broods of ovigerous females of the common shore crab Pachygrapsus transversus at both sheltered and exposed rocky shores interspersed along a so-km coastline, during four different periods, to better assess inter-population differences of larval release timing and to test for the effect of wave action. Shore-specific patterns were consistent through time. Maximum release fell within 1 day around syzygies on all shores, which matched dates of maximum tidal amplitude. Within this very narrow range, populations at exposed shores anticipated hatching compared to those at sheltered areas, possibly due to mechanical stimulation by wave action. Average departures from syzygial release ranged consistently among shores from 2.4 to 3.3 days, but in this case we found no evidence for the effect of wave exposure. Therefore, processes varying at the scale of a few kilometres affect the precision of semilunar timing and may produce differences in the survival of recently hatched larvae. O presente estudo tem como objetivo descrever e caracterizar o relise - produto textual realizado pelas assessoria de imprensa para divulgação de seus clientes na mídia - como um novo gênero da esfera de produção jornalística. Optamos pelo enfoque discursivo sobre os gêneros formulado por Bakhtin: os discursos são constituídos sócio-historicamente e determinados pelos diferentes modos de produção, assim como pelas relações estabelecidas entre os interlocutores. Para analisar esse gênero pouco conhecido do grande público, foi necessário, num primeiro momento, situar o leitor deste trabalho no universo das assessorias de imprensa, contando um pouco da história de seu surgimento e do importante papel do relise no dia-a-dia dos escritórios de comunicação. Calcado nas teorias da corrente bakhtiniana sobre gênero e suas aplicações nos estudos de lingüistas contemporâneos, buscou-se apresentar uma conceituação detalhada dos gêneros discursivos, como apoio para a caracterização do relise, evidenciando os recursos persuasivos que permeiam os textos produzidos pelos assessores de imprensa. Neste trabalho os retornos de ativos financeiros são modelados com base em dados não-estruturados de notícias aperiódicas. O cerne do tratamento de tais dados está na Recuperação da Informação, que se importa em aplicar uma transformação suficientemente representativa das estruturas de contexto gramatical para o algébrico. Trabalhos anteriores mostram que não só o timing (GOODHART, HALL, et al., 1993), tipo (ÄIJÖ, 2008), ou contexto no momento de publicação da notícia (BEBER e BRANDT, 2010), mas também o conteúdo léxico (WÜTHRICH, PERMUNETILLEKE, et al., 1998; LAVRENKO, SCHMILL, et al., 2000; SCHUMAKER e CHEN, 2009) explicam movimentos de mercado. Este trabalho tem por objetivo estender a discussão já fundamentada sobre a semântica das publicações, com a proposta de aprofundar a avaliação da sensibilidade paramétrica do ajuste de modelos já encontrados na literatura. We studied here the effect of a wide range of adenosine concentration and time of preincubation, on the histamine release induced in the guinea pig mast cells by different stimulus. Adenosine (10(-5)-10(-3) M) potentiated the histamine release induced by antigen in the guinea pig heart (isolated and dispersed tissue) and lung mast cells but not induced by ionophore A23197. The potentiation caused by adenosine (10(-4) M) was maximum after 1-3 min of preincubation and is probably an extracellular effect since it was not avoided by dipyridamol (3 x 10(-7)-10(-6) M) that inhibit the uptake of adenosine. Similar potentiation was also produced by the adenosine mimetic 2-chloroadenosine (10(-5) M) and both effects were inhibited by 8-phenyltheophylline indicating an effect on the type A receptors. It is suggested that the adenosine potentiation may not be related to changes on the cyclic AMP levels. (C) 2000 Academic Press.

O press release já tem mais de cem anos de existência e é tido como a mais importante técnica de assessoria de imprensa. Muitos são os estudos que provam os altos índices de eficácia deste suporte na indução de notícias, mas quase nada se conhece sobre o seu processo de produção. Procura-se, desta forma, tentar perceber com que propósitos e de que forma o press release é elaborado para ter a aceitação dos jornalistas, assim como entender o processo de transformação que estes textos sofrem até serem publicados como notícias finais. Este ensaio procura, também, levantar a discussão sobre o conflito entre as relações públicas e o jornalismo, nomeadamente se os press releases se assumem mais como produtos promocionais ou jornalísticos.

OBJECTIVES: The objective of the authors was to evaluate fluoride release of 3 glass ionomer cements with immediate protection of fluoride varnish (Cavitine, SS White), divided into 3 groups: Group M (Meron, VOCO), Group V (Vidrion C, SS White) and Group KC (Ketac-Cem, 3M ESPE). METHODS: Fluoride release was measured during 60 days by means of an ion-selective electrode connected to an ion analyzer. After 4 weeks, the test specimens were exposed to a solution of 0.221% sodium fluoride (1000 ppm of fluoride). RESULTS: Results showed that the cements reached a maximum peak of fluoride release in a period of 24 h. There was a statistically significant difference between the amount of fluoride released after the applications of fluoride among the groups from the 31st to 60th day (p> 0.05). CONCLUSION: The Vidrion C and Meron cements showed better performance to uptake and release fluoride when compared with Ketac-Cem cement.

The Rural Restaurant Healthy Options Program: Response of Rural, Local Newspapers to a Program Press Release

Local media should be used to raise awareness of health promotion programs. In rural areas, local newspapers provide an opportunity to reach large numbers of residents. Although there are expert guidelines describing the process for successfully engaging local media, little has been documented regarding the range of responses that local, rural newspapers might have when approached about covering health promotion programs. This study describes the response of rural, local newspapers to a press release about a health promotion program taking place in 28 restaurants in different rural towns. The most common reason for not publishing a story was that it would constitute free advertising for the restaurant. Twenty-two stories were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The majority of the responding newspapers were weeklies, and 16 published the full press release verbatim. Three stories included photos, and five included quotes. Headlines typically included the name of the restaurant and the university partner. The overall response rate is encouraging; however, there is considerable room for improvement in terms of personalizing the story with photos or quotes. Greater efforts may be required to obtain this depth of coverage, including training for local journalists to increase their interest and confidence in covering health promotion issues.

Understanding how genetic science is communicated to the lay public is of great import, given that media coverage of genetics is increasing exponentially and that the ways in which discoveries are presented in the news can have significant effects on a variety of health outcomes. To address this issue, this study examines the presentation of genetic research relating to cancer outcomes and behaviors (i.e., prostate cancer, breast cancer, colon cancer, smoking and obesity) in both the press release (N = 23) and its subsequent news coverage (N = 71) by using both quantitative content analysis and qualitative textual analysis. In contrast to earlier studies reporting that news stories often misrepresent genetics by presenting biologically deterministic and simplified portrayals (e.g., Mountcastle-Shah et al., 2003; Ten Eych & Williment, 2003), our data shows no clear trends in the direction of distortion toward deterministic claims in news articles. Also, other errors commonly attributed to science journalism, such as lack of qualifying details and use of oversimplified language (e.g., “fat gene”) are observed in press releases. These findings suggest that the intermediary press release rather than news coverage may serve as a source of distortion in the dissemination of science to the lay public. The implications of this study for future research in this area are discussed.

This study considered genetic research relating to cancer outcomes and behaviors, specifically investigating the extent to which claims made in press releases (N=23) and mainstream print media (N=71) were fairly derived from their original presentation in scholarly journals (N=20). Central claims expressing gene-outcome relationships were evaluated by a large pool (N=40) of genetics graduate students. Raters judged press release claims as significantly more representative of material within the original science journal article compared with news article claims. Claims originating in news articles which demonstrated contact with individuals not directly involved in the research were judged by experts to be more representative of the original science as compared with those that demonstrated contact with individuals directly involved in the research.

Partiendo del respeto a los derechos desde el punto de vista procesal que le impone la Carta Política a la Corte Constitucional, el objeto de la presente investigación es una especialísima forma procesal que hemos denominado “Anticipada Sentencia: El Comunicado de Prensa”. Entendido como el acto de comunicación que aplica reiteradamente la Corte Constitucional en Colombia para dar a conocer el sentido y alcance de sus decisiones, sin haber suscrito el texto de la sentencia y en consecuencia, no habiendo agotado la etapa procesal de su notificación. El objetivo principal de la investigación es demostrar cómo en la práctica se genera incertidumbre y confusión en la colectividad, a causa de la divulgación de las decisiones de la Corte Constitucional a través de comunicados con los cuales evade el cumplimiento de elementales normas procesales de orden público que rigen los actos del proceso, al amparo del Artículo 64 de la Ley 270 de 1996 que, por el contrario, no es de imperativa aplicación. El trabajo se desarrolla en tres ejes estructurales: primero, Eficacia Normativa o Simbólica de los comunicados de prensa; segundo, Proceso de Acción Pública de Inconstitucionalidad; y tercero, Principio de Seguridad Jurídica. Many computer systems have a functional requirement to release information. Such requirements are an important part of a system's information security requirements. Current information-flow control techniques are able to reason about permitted information flows, but not required information flows. In this paper, we introduce and explore the specification and enforcement of required information release in a language-based setting. We define semantic security conditions that express both what information a program is required to release, and how an observer is able to learn this information. We also consider the relationship between permitted and required information release, and define bounded release, which provides upper- and lower-bounds on the information a program releases. Este estudo procura compreender o impacto das redes sociais na prática da assessoria de imprensa, com foco nas mudanças no relacionamento assessor-jornalista e na forma como é elaborado o press release. Através de entrevistas de elite semi-diretivas (n=10), conseguiu-se demonstrar que estamos a atravessar uma fase de adaptação da assessoria de imprensa às potencialidades dos novos media, e que estas são encaradas, pela maior parte dos profissionais entrevistados, como mecanismos facilitadores e potenciadores na promoção de notícias.; This study seeks to understand the impact of social media in the practice of media relations, focusing on changes in the PR-journalist relationship and on how the press release is prepared. Through semi-directive elite interviews (n=10), we were able to demonstrate that we are goingthrough a phase of adaptation of press offices to the potential of new media, and that this potential is seen by most of the interviewed professionals as a facilitating mechanism and an enhancer when promoting news.

Naturally occurring clay colloidal particles are heavily involved in sediment processes in the subsurface soil. Due to the importance of these processes in the subsurface environment, the transport of clay colloidal particles has been studied in several disciplines, including soil sciences, petrology, hydrology, etc. Specifically, in environmental engineering, clay colloid release and transport in the sediments have been extensively investigated, which are motivated by environmental concerns such as colloid-facilitated contaminant transport in groundwater and the subsurface soil. Clay colloid release is resulted from physical alteration of subsurface sediments. Despite the potential importance of clay colloid activities, the detailed mechanisms of release and transport of clay colloidal particles within natural sediments are poorly understood. Pore medium structure, properties and flow dynamics, etc. are factors that affect clay colloid generation, mobilization, and subsequent transport. Possible mechanisms of clay colloid generation in the sediments include precipitation, erosion and mobilization by changes in pore water chemistry and clay colloid release depends on a balance of applied hydrodynamic and resisting adhesive torques and forces. Colloid release from the agricultural soil under unsaturated conditions was controlled by the hydrodynamic force, capillary force and electrostatic force that is determined by the solution chemistry in terms of solution ionic strength and pH. In this research, colloid release from the agricultural soil was investigated using an intact soil column collected from an agricultural site in Gadsden County of Florida. Colloid release was monitored and the colloid release curve was simulated using an implicit, finite-difference scheme to obtain the colloid release coefficient. It was found that the hydrodynamic force and electrostatic force overcame the capillary force under the experimental conditions of this research and consequently, colloids were released. For the colloid release, solution chemistry played a key role by controlling the colloid repulsive electrostatic force within the pore system. Colloid release exponentially decreased with the increase of solution ionic strength and increased with the increase of solution pH. Colloid release was finally found to be correlated to the colloid repulsive electrostatic force within the pore system, i.e., the greater the repulsive electrostatic force, more colloids were released.

During animal waste agricultural applications, the major concern is the pathogen spreading, which may contaminate groundwater. Colloid release and pathogen transport during irrigation were evaluated in intact agricultural soil columns in this research using Escherichia coli as a model strain. In order to be easily identified and quantified, E. coli was incorporated with green fluorescent protein genes. The experiments were conducted at a water flow rate of 100 ml/min and the elution was collected and analized for colloid release and E. coli transport. Colloid release and E. coli transport were simulated using an implicit, finite-difference scheme with colloid release rate coefficient and E. coli deposition rate coefficient as constant, linear and exponential functions of the soil depth, respectively. It seemed that exponential functions had the best fit against the colloid release and E. coli transport observations.
