Information gathered with advanced nucleotide sequencing technologies, small molecule detection systems and computational biology is revealing that a community of microbes and their genes, now termed “the microbiome,” located in gut and rhizosphere, is responsible for maintaining the health of human beings and plants, respectively. Within the complete microbiome a “core-microbiome” exists that plays the pivotal role in well being of humans and plants. Recent studies in medicine have shown that an artificial mixture of bacteria representing the core gut microbiome of healthy person when transferred into gut of diseased person results in re-establishment of normal microflora in the latter leading to alleviation from diseased condition. In agriculture, though not exactly in similar manner as in medicine, success in plant disease management has been achieved through transfer of microbiome by mixing disease suppressive soils with disease conducive soils. A study more similar to artificial gut microbiome transfer in medical field has been recently reported in agriculture, in which transfer of microbiome via soil solutions (filtered and unfiltered) has shown ability to alleviate drought stress in Arabidopsis thaliana. However, the exact practice of transferring artificially cultivated core-microbiome as in medicine has not thus far been attempted in plant disease management. Nonetheless...

This review discusses the present trends in studies on the impacts of climate change on plant diseases. Firstly, the approaches used for studying the potential effects of altered temperature, water availability, CO2 and O3 air concentrations, and UV-B radiation on components of the disease cycle are explained and discussed. Next, the impact of changes in climate patterns on the geographic and temporal distribution of diseases by integrating biological and epidemiological models into geographic and climate databases are assessed. Finally, adaptation strategies are discussed and areas where there is a recognized lack of knowledge are highlighted. The literature shows that different pathosystems respond in different ways to climate change. Thus, case-by-case studies on the responses of crop species or varieties and their diseases to climate change are necessary. In addition to that, wide-scale projections of disease risk are necessary in order to identify research priorities, whereas industry must be strategically directed and public policies developed to establish adaptation measures and to prevent potential food security crisis. Only by conducting long-term and multidisciplinary studies can we reduce the uncertainty regarding the effects of climate change on plant diseases.; 2012

All essential nutrients can affect the incidence and severity of plant diseases. Although silicon (Si) is not considered as an essential nutrient for plants, it stands out for its potential to decrease disease intensity in many crops. The mechanism of Si action in plant resistance is still unclear. Si deposition in plant cell walls raised the hypothesis of a possible physical barrier to pathogen penetration. However, the increased activity of phenolic compounds, polyphenol oxidases and peroxidases in plants treated with Si demonstrates the involvement of this element in the induction of plant defense responses. The studies examined in this review address the role of Si in disease control and the possible mechanisms involved in the mode of Si action in disease resistance in plants.

Muitos métodos rápidos e eficientes de seleção de agentes de biocontrole de fitopatógenos tem sido utilizados, visando reduzir tempo e custo dispendido em testes de campo. Neste trabalho realizou-se uma seleção de isolados endofíticos com potencial de uso no biocontrole de fitopatógenos em testes de antagonismo in vitro. De um total de 95 isolados de bactérias endofíticas do milho, seis foram selecionados quanto à inibição a Pythium aphanidermatum. A essa seleção, foram incluídos um isolado de Bacillus subtilis 0G, Bacillus lentimorbus e Streptomyces sp., para verificação de antagonismo a Rhizoctonia solani, Fusarium moniliforme, Sclerotium rolfsii e Exserohilum turcicum. Verificou-se que os endofíticos B. subtilis 0G, B. lentimorbus e Streptomyces sp., apresentaram ação antagônica superior aos demais, com taxas de inibição entre 32,0% e 53,8%. Dentre os endofíticos do milho, Bacillus agaradhaerens foi o que mais se destacou, com taxas de inibição variando entre 43,7% e 52,3% e indicando uma inespecificidade de ação. Este estudo...
