Background: Ontologies have increasingly been used in the biomedical domain, which has prompted the emergence of different initiatives to facilitate their development and integration. The Open Biological and Biomedical Ontologies (OBO) Foundry consortium provides a repository of life-science ontologies, which are developed according to a set of shared principles. This consortium has developed an ontology called OBO Relation Ontology aiming at standardizing the different types of biological entity classes and associated relationships. Since ontologies are primarily intended to be used by humans, the use of graphical notations for ontology development facilitates the capture, comprehension and communication of knowledge between its users. However, OBO Foundry ontologies are captured and represented basically using text-based notations. The Unified Modeling Language (UML) provides a standard and widely-used graphical notation for modeling computer systems. UML provides a well-defined set of modeling elements, which can be extended using a built-in extension mechanism named Profile. Na atualidade, o interesse pelo uso de ontologias tem sido incrementado. No entanto, o processo de construção pode ser custoso em termos de tempo. Para uma ontologia ser construída, precisa-se de um especialista com conhecimentos de um editor de ontologias. Com a finalidade de reduzir tal processo de construção pelo especialista, analisamos e propomos um método para realizar aprendizado de ontologias (AO) de forma supervisionada. O presente trabalho consiste em uma abordagem combinada de diferentes técnicas no AO. Primeiro, usamos uma técnica estatística chamada C/NC-values, acompanhada da ferramenta Cogroo, para extrair os termos mais representativos do texto. Esses termos são considerados por sua vez como conceitos. Projetamos também uma gramática de restrições (GR), com base na informação linguística do Português, com o objetivo de reconhecer e estabelecer relações entre conceitos. Para poder enriquecer a informação na ontologia, usamos a análise de conceitos formais (ACF) com o objetivo de identificar possíveis superconceitos entre dois conceitos. Finalmente, extraímos ontologias para os textos de três temas, submetendo-as à avaliação dos especialistas na área. Um web site foi feito para tornar o processo de avaliação mais amigável para os avaliadores e usamos o questionário de marcos de características proposto pelo método OntoMetrics. O avanço tecnológico de dispositivos capazes de capturar e armazenar volumes significativos de imagens permite o armazenamento de grandes quantidades de informações visuais. Uma área de intensa pesquisa atualmente é a extração e modelagem de conhecimento visual contido nessas bases de informações. O conceito de conhecimento visual e imagem são conceitos disjuntos, mesmo que pareçam intrinsecamente conectados. Conhecimento visual é o conjunto de modelos mentais compostos por imagens de objetos reais ou imaginárias manipuladas pelo cérebro. Esses modelos mentais são aplicados em tarefas cuja solução envolve a análise de informações visuais, como por exemplo, a extração de conteúdo semântico de imagens. Domínios imagísticos são os domínios nos quais a solução de problemas começa com um processo de casamento de padrões que capturam a informação visual e que mais tarde dará suporte ao processo abstrato da interpretação. Peirce s ontology could not be ranked as a discourse about the reality of being (Aristotle); nor could it be understood as a scientific metaphysics ruled by transcendental conditions (Kant). Peirce evades from both traditions, as long as he builds his ontology from a semiotics-based reality whose mode of being is defined in terms of relations (monadic, dyadic and triadic relations). So I assume through my argument that Peirce s ontology forges an essential alliance to the so called ontology of relations. Knowledge systems are a suitable computational approach to solve complex problems and to provide decision support. Ontologies are an approach for knowledge representation and Ontology Population looks for instantiating the constituent elements of an ontology, like properties and non-taxonomic relationships. Manual population by domain experts and knowledge engineers is an expensive and time consuming task. Thus, automatic or semi-automatic approaches are needed. This paper discusses the problem of Automatic Ontology Population and proposes a generic process specifying its phases and what kind of techniques can be used to perform the activities of each phase. Some techniques representing the state of the art of this field are also described along with the solutions they adopt for each phase of the AOP process with their advantages and limitations. This work is part of HERMES, a Brazil/Portugal research cooperation project looking for techniques and tools for automating the process of ontology learning and population.

Ontologies have proliferated in the last years, essentially justified by the need of achieving a consensus in the multiple representations of reality inside computers, and therefore the accomplishment of interoperability between machines and systems. Ontologies provide an explicit conceptualization that describes the semantics of the data. Crowdsourcing innovation intermediaries are organizations that mediate the communication and relationship between companies that aspire to solve some problem or to take advantage of any business opportunity with a crowd that is prone to give ideas based on their knowledge, experience and wisdom, taking advantage of web 2.0 tools. Various ontologies have emerged, but at the best of our knowledge, there isn’t any ontology that represents the entire process of intermediation of crowdsourcing innovation. In this paper we present an ontology roadmap for developing crowdsourcing innovation ontology of the intermediation process. Over the years, several authors have proposed some distinct methodologies, by different proposals of combining practices, activities, languages, according to the project they were involved in. We start making a literature review on ontology building, and analyse and compare ontologies that propose the development from scratch with the ones that propose reusing other ontologies. Dissertation submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the Degree of Master of Science in Geospatial Technologies; Folksonomy (from folk and taxonomy) is an approach to user metadata creation where users describe information objects with a free-form list of keywords (‘tags’). Folksonomy has have proved to be a useful information retrieval tool that support the emergence of “collective intelligence” or “bottom-up” light weight semantics. Since there are no guiding rules or restrictions on the users, folksonomy has some drawbacks and problems as lack of hierarchy, synonym control, and semantic precision. This research aims at enhancing information retrieval in folksonomy, particularly that of location information, by establishing explicit relationships between place name tags. To accomplish this, an automated approach is developed. The approach starts by retrieving tags from Flickr. The tags are then filtered to identify those that represent place names. Next, the gazetteer service that is a knowledge organization system for spatial information is used to query for the place names. The major challenge emerged with ubiquity of geographic information, evolving geospatial technology and location-aware service is to deal with the semantic interoperability. Although the use of ontology aims at capturing shared conceptualization of geospatial information, human perception of world view is not adequately addressed in geospatial ontology. This study proposes ‘Conservation GIS Ontology’ that comprises spatial knowledge of non-expert conservationists in the context of Chitwan National Park, Nepal. The discussion is presented in four parts: exploration of commonsense spatial knowledge about conservation; development of conceptual ontology to conceptualize domain knowledge; formal representation of conceptualization in Web Ontology Language (OWL); and quality assessment of the ontology development tasks. Elicitation of commonsense spatial knowledge is performed with the notion of cognitive view of semantic. Emphasis is given to investigate the observation of wildlife movement and habitat change scenarios. Information organization became a fundamental process in face of the exponential increasing of available information, motivated by technology advances, Internet in particular. It demands effective approaches of information filtering and searching, like the information retrieval systems. Such systems depend on the document s semantic representation, which can be implemented through conceptual and semantic relationship representation instruments, as ontologies. The ontology construction is a complex and time-consuming process. It s difficult to know whether a given ontology is wide enough to represent the documents semantic information. Up to date ontologies are developed according to Ontology Engineering standards and methods, although there is no any universal solution. This work presents a methodology for semi-automatic construction of ontologies. It also demonstrates an ontology construction for grid computing domain, aiming to validate the proposal. Such domain is strongly associated to resources sharing to solve problems on dynamic and heterogeneous environment. The allocation of these resources is an essential task in the grid and depends on the quality of available information. The constructed ontology aims to provide a description of the resources available in a computational grid to help on the qualification of information contained in this environment. A landform is a subjective individuation of a part of a terrain. Landform recognition is a difficult task because its definition usually relies on a qualitative and fuzzy description. Achieving automatic recognition of landforms requires a formal definition of the landforms properties and their modelling. In the maritime domain, the International Hydrographic Organisation published a standard terminology of undersea feature names which formalises a set of definition mainly for naming and communication purpose. This terminology is here used as a starting point for the definition of an ontology of undersea features and their automatic classification from a terrain model. First, an ontology of undersea features is built. The ontology is composed of an application domain ontology describing the main properties and relationships between features and a representation ontology deals with representation on a chart where features are portrayed by soundings and isobaths. A database model was generated from the ontology. Geometrical properties describing the feature shape are computed from soundings and isobaths and are used for feature classification. An example of automatic classification on a nautical chart is presented and results and on-going research are discussed.

We have, since the beginning of the 20th century, been witness to a conflict between two philosophical traditions: the analytic and the continental. This essay tries to show that between them there exists an ontological gap that endures in our days: a incommensurability between the continental ontology of events and the analytic ontology of facts. The autor shall try to give shape to this central thesis in three steps. He start with a diagnosis of the continental ontology of events in connection with problems of the philosophy of mind. He thereby regard as exemplary the conflict between a phenomenological conception on the one hand and the positions of Dennett and likewise Searle on the other. He shall then try to demonstrate the way in which this ontology persists in continental philosophy through various transformations, in a process which he shall describe as ???a locating of sense in the world???. In biomedical informatics, ontologies are considered a key technology for annotating, retrieving and sharing the huge volume of publicly available data. Due to the increasing amount, complexity and variety of existing biomedical ontologies, choosing the ones to be used in a semantic annotation problem or to design a specific application is a difficult task. As a consequence, the design of approaches and tools addressed to facilitate the selection of biomedical ontologies is becoming a priority. In this paper we present BiOSS, a novel system for the selection of biomedical ontologies. BiOSS evaluates the adequacy of an ontology to a given domain according to three different criteria: (1) the extent to which the ontology covers the domain; (2) the semantic richness of the ontology in the domain; (3) the popularity of the ontology in the biomedical community. BiOSS has been applied to 5 representative problems of ontology selection. It also has been compared to existing methods and tools. Results are promising and show the usefulness of BiOSS to solve real-world ontology selection problems. BiOSS is openly available both as a web tool and a web service.

Esta dissertação propõe uma Ontologia Funcional de Reputação para agentes. Tal ontologia representa uma parte do conhecimento científico sobre reputação provido tanto pelas Ciências Humanas quanto pelos trabalhos em Inteligência Artificial. Seu objetivo é oferecer uma perspectiva funcional para a representação e análise da reputação como mecanismo de controle social em sociedades de agentes, de forma a sustentar a implementação de modelos de reputação para agentes. A Ontologia Funcional de Reputação foi construída a partir das categorias de conhecimento da Ontologia Funcional do Direito, proposta por Valente (1995), e utiliza a categorização de conceitos definida para o mundo jurídico para a representação do mundo social. A ontologia foi codificada em OWL DL, uma linguagem formal baseada em lógica descritiva. Uma vez construída a ontologia, os conceitos utilizados por diversos modelos e sistemas de reputação foram utilizados na sua avaliação. A utilização de um motor de inferência permitiu comparar estes conceitos, representados por meio de classes OWL, com as classes da ontologia. Ontology based websites are one possible implementation of the Semantic Web. There are several languages for ontology specification: RDF, OWL, Topic Maps. Topic Maps follow a structure formally specified what makes them a good choice for semantic website specification. The process of ontology development based in topic maps is complex, time consuming, and it requires a lot of human and financial resources, because they can have a lot of topics and associations, and the number of information resources can be very large. To overcome this problem a new environment is proposed, Oveia. Oveia is composed by four components which have relevant contributions to the Semantic Web area. This paper describes these components in detail. Two components representing a metadata extractor: heterogeneous data integration (through XSDS specifications) and an homogeneous intermediate data representation for the extracted metadata (datasets). Ontology is a knowledge about world as a whole. Union of ontology and science put somelimitations on ontology, that are caused by need to co-ordinate language of science with language of ontology. Main characteristic features of science are logic and mathematics. Union of ontology and science could be successful only if ontology will have the same features. These requirements meets relative ontology based on a assumption that being is possible only through act of inequality, and non-being – through act of equality. Examining of inequality structure leads us to a need of considering in being act of equality as well. As a result we should refuse of considering problems of Being—Non-Being separately and proceed to united problem of Being—Non-Being. Inequality can be represented by mathematical subtraction. That allows to substantiate ontologically basic mathematical concepts: concepts of set and number. Mathematics become a part of ontology. Inequality is an idea. Equality is a matter. The key problem of successful developing of the software intensive system (SIS) is adequate conceptual interactions of designers during the early stages of development. The success of the development can be increased by using of a project ontology, the creation of which is being embedded into the processes of conceptual solving the project tasks and specifying the project solutions. The essence of the conceptual design is a specification of conceptualization. The main suggestion of this paper is a creation of the project ontology in the form of a specialized SIS that supports the conceptual activity of designers. For creation of the project ontology of such type, the instrumental shell was developed. For creation of the project ontology the designers should fill this shell with the adequate information. The basic reasons for evolving the content of the ontology are negative results of testing of the used text units according to the conformity to the ontology. Such shell (in any state of its using) includes the created ontology and its working version (working dictionary) which helps to manage the informational flows, to register the life cycles of the conceptual units and to provide the representativity of their usages.

In this paper, we specify a generic ontology for the process domain considering the related state-of-the-art research literature. As a result, the recently built process ontology contributes to enrich semantically the terms for the (previously developed) measurement and evaluation domain ontology by means of stereotypes. One of the underlying hypothesis in this research is that the generic ontology for process can be seen as a reusable artifact which can be used to enrich semantically not only the measurement and evaluation domain ontology but also to other domains involved in different organizational endeavors. For instance, for the measurement domain, now is explicit that the measurement term has the semantic of task, the measure term has the meaning of outcome, and the metric term has the semantic of method, from the process terminological base standpoint. The augmented conceptual framework, i.e. measurement and evaluation concepts plus process concepts, has also a positive impact on the GOCAME (Goal-Oriented Context-Aware Measurement and Evaluation) strategy capabilities since ensures terminological uniformity, consistency and verifiability to its process and method specifications.
