Para validar o número de grupos foram explorados diversos algoritmos de agrupamento.; In this dissertation the study of methodologies of Multivariate Statistics was deepened...

The main focus of this study was to illustrate the applicability of multiple correspondence analysis (MCA) in detecting and representing underlying structures in large datasets used to investigate cognitive ageing. Principal component analysis (PCA) was used to obtain main cognitive dimensions, and MCA was used to detect and explore relationships between cognitive, clinical, physical, and lifestyle variables. Two PCA dimensions were identified (general cognition/executive function and memory), and two MCA dimensions were retained. Poorer cognitive performance was associated with older age, less school years, unhealthier lifestyle indicators, and presence of pathology. The first MCA dimension indicated the clustering of general/executive function and lifestyle indicators and education, while the second association was between memory and clinical parameters and age. The clustering analysis with object scores method was used to identify groups sharing similar characteristics. The weaker cognitive clusters in terms of memory and executive function comprised individuals with characteristics contributing to a higher MCA dimensional mean score (age, less education, and presence of indicators of unhealthier lifestyle habits and/or clinical pathologies). MCA provided a powerful tool to explore complex ageing data...

In press; Population studies are often characterized by a plethora of data that includes quantitative to qualitative variables. The main focus of this study was to illustrate the applicability of multiple correspondence analysis (MCA) in detecting and representing underlying structures in large datasets used to investigate cognitive ageing. Principal component analysis (PCA) was used to obtain main cognitive dimensions (based on the continuous neurocognitive test variables) and MCA to detect and explore relationships of cognitive, clinical, physical and lifestyle categorical variables across the low-dimensional space. Altogether the technique allows to not only simplify complex data, providing a detailed description of the data and yielding a simple and exhaustive analysis, but also to handle a large and diverse dataset comprised of quantitative, qualitative, objective and subjective data. Two PCA dimensions were identified (general cognition/executive function and memory) and two main MCA dimensions were retained. As expected, poorer cognitive performance was associated with older age, less school years, unhealthier lifestyle indicators and presence of pathology. Interestingly, the first MCA dimension indicated the clustering of general/executive function and lifestyle indicators and education...

Purpose: This study aims at examining the contributors to adjustment to aging (AtA) and subjective age (SA) identified by older adults and to investigate the latent constructs that can work as major determinants in AtA and SA in an older Portuguese and German population. Method: Measures were completed, using a variety of appropriate methods, including demographics and interviews. Complete data were available for 102 older adults aged between 74-100 years (M=81.2; SD = 6.70). Data was subjected to content analysis. Representation of the associations and latent constructs were analyzed by a Multiple Correspondence Analysis (MCA). Results: Findings showed a model for each nationality. SA and AtA for Portuguese elderly were explained by a three-factor overall model: “active”, “concentrated” and “attuned”. A three-dimension overall model formed by “harmonized”, “focused” and “young-at-heart” was indicated as a best-fit solution for German elderly. Conclusion: SAis differently related to AtA in older adults in both samples. The findings presented in this paper highlighted the under-developed potential of an adjustment and age overall model for this population.

To analyze subjective age (SA) and the contributors to adjustment to aging (AtA) identified by older adults and to investigate the latent constructs that can work as major determinants in SA and AtA in an older population. Method: Measures were completed, using a variety of appropriate methods, including demographics and interviews. Complete data were available for 108 older adults aged between 75-99 years (M = 81.1; SD = 6.43). Data was subjected to content analysis. Representation of the associations and latent constructs were analyzed by a Multiple Correspondence Analysis (MCA). Results: The most prevalent response of the interviewed participants for contributors to AtA was ‘sense of limit and existential issues’ (20.2%). ‘With congruence’ (29.3%) was identified as the most frequent SA response. AtA and SA for Portuguese elderly were explained by a three-factor model: ‘integrated’, ‘involved’ and ‘youngat- heart’. A three-dimension model formed by ‘attentive’, ‘driven’ and ‘connected’ was indicated as a best-fit solution for English elderly. Conclusions: AtA is related to SA in older adults in both samples. The results presented in this paper stressed the under-developed potential of an adjustment and age overall model for this population.

Sensory aspects of destinations have recently been in focus as an important dimension in the process of facilitating positive tourist experiences. The countryside embraces local resources rich in multi-sensory stimuli that could be utilized in the planning and marketing of appealing tourist experiences addressed to segments of tourists, while fitting sustainable local development. This study follows a holistic approach to the five external human senses, aiming to capture meaningful sensory-informed themes adequate for segmenting rural tourists. A self-administered survey in four languages was collected from 181 tourists in Southwest Portugal. A multiple correspondence analysis suggests four sensory-informed themes, tentatively named generic beach-related experience, nature-based experience, balanced experience, and rural experience. The proposed themes correspond to a four-solution cluster of tourists presenting different profiles. The largest segment (73 tourists) corresponds to the rural experience, regarding which tourists mainly refer to the taste of local food and the smell of fresh air.

The objective of this work was to select the most informative morphoagronomic descriptors for cassava (Manihot esculenta) germplasm and to evaluate the ability of different methods to select the descriptors. Ninety-five accessions were characterized using 51 morphoagronomic descriptors. Data were subjected to a multiple correspondence analysis (MCA), whose information was used in the following four methods of descriptor selection: reverse order of the descriptor for the pth factorial axis of the MCA (Jolliffe); sequential, multiple correspondence analysis (SMCA); mean of the contribution orders of the descriptor in the first three factorial axes (C3PA); and C3PA method weighted by the respective eigenvalues of the full analysis (C3PAWeig). The correlations between the dissimilarity matrix with all descriptors and the most informative descriptors were high and significant (0.75, 0.77, 0.83, and 0.84 for C3PAWeig, C3PA, SMCA, and Jolliffe, respectively). The less informative descriptors were discarded, considering those common among the selection methods and relevant for the breeding interests. Therefore, 32 morphoagronomic descriptors with correlation between the dissimilarity matrices (r=0.81) were selected, due to their high capacity to discriminate cassava germplasm and to their ability to maintain some preliminary agronomic traits...

This study was proposed to select minimum descriptors to the characterization of accessions of Capsicum spp. from Embrapa Hortaliças germplasm bank, which are characterized mainly by qualitative data. From this collection, 893 (420 C. annuum, 106 C. baccatum, 307 C. chinense and 60 C. frutescens) were considered because they were completely characterized by 56 morphological descriptors. The statistical treatment was performed by factorial multiple correspondence analysis, combined with estimation of matrices of genetic dissimilarity among accessions for multicategoric data. Lists of minimum descriptors were proposed for the whole collection and for the subcollections related to the four cultivated species. Around thirty minimum descriptors were selected for each subcollection, maintaining a minimum of 0.90 for the correlation between the dissimilarity matrices that consider all the descriptors or only the selected minimum descriptors. These proposed lists allow a reduction of around 50% in the number of initial descriptors. The filament colour, mature fruit colour, number of locules, fruit position, origin, pungency, fruit surface, stem length, plant height and fruit length were selected as minimum descriptors, both to the whole collection and their subcollections. Most of these descriptors are related to the fruit traits of sweet and chilli peppers...

The measurement of multidimensional poverty has been advocated by most welfare scholars and is experiencing a growth in interest, partly explained by controversial debates that have emerged across academics and practitioners. This paper follows one of the least explored approaches -- Multiple Correspondence Analysis -- to assess multidimensional poverty in Morocco between 2001 and 2007. Multiple Correspondence Analysis provides two major advantages for the measurement of multidimensional poverty: it generates a matrix of "weights" based on the variance-covariance matrix of all welfare dimensions selected and provides a natural approach for constructing a composite welfare indicator that satisfies essential poverty ordering axioms. The application shows that poverty in Morocco has declined according to both monetary and multidimensional indicators and that these findings are robust to stochastic dominance tests. The paper concludes that the sustained positive growth that Morocco experienced during the last decade has translated in improvements in living conditions well beyond monetary returns.

Participation in inter-laboratory comparisons (ILC) is one of the recommended means of external quality control according to ISO/IEC 17025:2005. Providers of ILC or proficiency test (PT) schemes collect, besides the measurement results on the test samples, information on the sample treatment and measurement procedure. The objective of this paper is to evaluate in a non-traditional way, using numerical and non-numerical data provided by the participants in IMEP-20 (trace elements in tuna fish), the additional information concerning the applied analytical methods and the accreditation/nomination status. Arsenic was taken as an example. The basic statistical procedure for the evaluation of questionnaire information was the multiple correspondence analysis (MCA). Uni-variate clustering techniques were applied for the categorization of the numerical data (measurement values). The methodology of the evaluation of supplementary non-numeric information used in this paper might serve (a) to providers of ILC (PT) schemes to modify/improve their questionnaires and (b) to give laboratories better guidance in the methods used for the determination of various analytes in different matrices. This paper is meant serve as a guide for the possible interpretation of the questionnaires accompanying ILC schemas.; JRC.D.4-Isotope measurements

This paper presents findings from a study investigating a firm’s ethical practices along the value chain. In so doing we attempt to better understand potential relationships between a firm’s ethical stance with its customers and those of its suppliers within a supply chain and identify particular sectoral and cultural influences that might impinge on this. Drawing upon a database comprising of 667 industrial firms from 27 different countries, we found that ethical practices begin with the firm’s relationship with its customers, the characteristics of which then influence the ethical stance with the firm’s suppliers within the supply chain. Importantly, market structure along with some key cultural characteristics were also found to exert significant influence on the implementation of ethical policies in these firms.

We propose a multiple imputation method to deal with incomplete categorical data. This method imputes the missing entries using the principal components method dedicated to categorical data: multiple correspondence analysis (MCA). The uncertainty concerning the parameters of the imputation model is reflected using a non-parametric bootstrap. Multiple imputation using MCA (MIMCA) requires estimating a small number of parameters due to the dimensionality reduction property of MCA. It allows the user to impute a large range of data sets. In particular, a high number of categories per variable, a high number of variables or a small the number of individuals are not an issue for MIMCA. Through a simulation study based on real data sets, the method is assessed and compared to the reference methods (multiple imputation using the loglinear model, multiple imputation by logistic regressions) as well to the latest works on the topic (multiple imputation by random forests or by the Dirichlet process mixture of products of multinomial distributions model). The proposed method shows good performances in terms of bias and coverage for an analysis model such as a main effects logistic regression model. In addition, MIMCA has the great advantage that it is substantially less time consuming on data sets of high dimensions than the other multiple imputation methods.

Thanks to the advanced technologies and social networks that allow the data to be widely shared among the Internet, there is an explosion of pervasive multimedia data, generating high demands of multimedia services and applications in various areas for people to easily access and manage multimedia data. Towards such demands, multimedia big data analysis has become an emerging hot topic in both industry and academia, which ranges from basic infrastructure, management, search, and mining to security, privacy, and applications. Within the scope of this dissertation, a multimedia big data analysis framework is proposed for semantic information management and retrieval with a focus on rare event detection in videos. The proposed framework is able to explore hidden semantic feature groups in multimedia data and incorporate temporal semantics, especially for video event detection. First, a hierarchical semantic data representation is presented to alleviate the semantic gap issue, and the Hidden Coherent Feature Group (HCFG) analysis method is proposed to capture the correlation between features and separate the original feature set into semantic groups, seamlessly integrating multimedia data in multiple modalities. Next, an Importance Factor based Temporal Multiple Correspondence Analysis (i.e....

This report gives a comprehensive explanation of the multivariate technique called correspondence analysis, applied in the context of a large survey of a nation's state of health, in this case the Spanish National Health Survey. It is first shown how correspondence analysis can be used to interpret a simple cross-tabulation by visualizing the table in the form of a map of points representing the rows and columns of the table. Combinations of variables can also be interpreted by coding the data in the appropriate way. The technique can also be used to deduce optimal scale values for the levels of a categorical variable, thus giving quantitative meaning to the categories. Multiple correspondence analysis can analyze several categorical variables simultaneously, and is analogous to factor analysis of continuous variables. Other uses of correspondence analysis are illustrated using different variables of the same Spanish database: for example, exploring patterns of missing data and visualizing trends across surveys from consecutive years.
