This thesis approaches the phenomenon of complexity of distance and blended education according to conceptual references of the modality...

This study deals with pedagogical practices carried out in academic licentiate degree course at Universidade Federal de Uberlandia (UFU), Minas Gerais state. It follows the research line Teaching Education and Professionalization linked to the Faculdade de Educação at Universidade Federal de Goiás, Goiás state. As a way of recognizing the current relevance of its theme, this thesis attempts at outlining new conceptions of research in teacher education as a possibility of changing the current conceptions of research as an educative practice. Its overall aim is to identify, to understand and to analyze conceptions of research put into evidence by motivations, meanings and goals that licentiate degree course’s professors ascribe to the research role in their educative practice to train teachers. Specifically, its aims include: identifying and analyzing research conceptions in these professors’ teaching background, their educative practices’ historicity, dynamics, contradictions, and contextualization in the light of the relationship among educator, student and their subject-matters; analyzing a dialectical move permeating those practices in relation to the research conceptions identified in these professors’ teaching background; and...

The bibliographic profile of 125 undergraduate (licentiate) theses was analyzed, describing absolute quantities of several bibliometric variables, as well as within-document indexes and average lags of the references. The results show a consistent pattern across the years in the 6 cohorts included in the sample (2001-2007), with variations, which fall within the robust confi dence intervals for the global central tendency. The median number of references per document was 52 (99% CI 47-55); the median  percentage of journal articles cited was 55%, with a median age for journal references of 9 years. Other highlights of the bibliographic profile were the use of foreign language references (median 61%), and low reliance on open web documents (median 2%). A cluster analysis of the bibliometric indexes resulted  in a typology of 2 main profiles, almost evenly distributed, one of them with the makeup of a natural science bibliographic profile and the second within the style of the humanities. In general, the number of references, proportion of papers, and age of the references are close to PhD dissertations and Master theses, setting a rather high standard for undergraduate theses.; Se analizó el perfil bibliográfico de 125 tesis de grado (licenciatura)...

## New tests of random numbers for simulations in physical systems

The aim of this Thesis is to present five new tests for random numbers, which are widely used {\em e.g.} in computer simulations in physics applications. The first two tests, the cluster test and the autocorrelation test, are based on analogies to the two-dimensional Ising model. The next two, the random walk test and the $n$-block test, are based on studies of random walks, and the condition number test presented last uses some results of Gaussian distributed random matrices. Studies with several commonly used pseudorandom number generators reveal that the cluster test is particularly powerful in finding periodic correlations on bit level, and that the autocorrelation test, the random walk test, and the $n$-block test are very effective in detecting short-ranged correlations. The results of the condition number test are mostly inconclusive, however. By means of the tests presented in this work, two important results are found. First, we show quantitatively that the reason for erroneous results in some recent high precision Monte Carlo simulations for some commonly used pseudorandom number generators are the so called triple correlations in the sequences. Then, we show that the properties of such a sequence may be considerably improved...

## A Robust Text Processing Technique Applied to Lexical Error Recovery

This thesis addresses automatic lexical error recovery and tokenization of corrupt text input. We propose a technique that can automatically correct misspellings, segmentation errors and real-word errors in a unified framework that uses both a model of language production and a model of the typing behavior, and which makes tokenization part of the recovery process. The typing process is modeled as a noisy channel where Hidden Markov Models are used to model the channel characteristics. Weak statistical language models are used to predict what sentences are likely to be transmitted through the channel. These components are held together in the Token Passing framework which provides the desired tight coupling between orthographic pattern matching and linguistic expectation. The system, CTR (Connected Text Recognition), has been tested on two corpora derived from two different applications, a natural language dialogue system and a transcription typing scenario. Experiments show that CTR can automatically correct a considerable portion of the errors in the test sets without introducing too much noise. The segmentation error correction rate is virtually faultless.; Comment: Licentiate Thesis, 101 pages

## Entanglement-Enhanced Quantum Key Distribution

Quantum key distribution (QKD) allows two spatially separated parties to securely generate a cryptographic key. The first QKD protocol, published by C. H. Bennett and G. Brassard in 1984 (BB84), describes how this is achieved by transmitting individual qubits and exchanging classical authenticated information. Any attempt to eavesdrop on the protocol introduces errors detectable by the legitimate parties. This Licentiate Thesis studies the recently introduced EEQKD protocol which builds on BB84. In EEQKD, the qubits sent individually in BB84 are entangled and thus not directly available to an eavesdropper who is, in this protocol, provided only one-by-one access to the transmission. The maximal information an eavesdropper can gain using a straightforward intercept-resend (IR) attack, is obtained for a given error rate. The secure key generation rate of EEQKD is estimated in practical scenarios including qubit loss and quantum channel noise. In addition, an exquisite vulnerability is exposed: For a particular setting of qubit entanglement, paradoxically proving most useful in the face of an IR attack, EEQKD reduces to BB84. Part of this research has been published in O. Ahonen et al., Physical Review A 78, 032314 (2008).; Comment: Licentiate Thesis...

The purpose of this licentiate thesis is to present Bukhgeim's result of 2007, which solves the inverse boundary value problem of the Schr\"odinger equation in the plane. The thesis is mainly based on Bukhgeim's paper and Kari Astala's seminar talk, which he gave the 11th and 18th September of 2008 at the University of Helsinki. Section 3 is devoted to the history and past results concerning some related problems: notably the inverse problem of the Schr\"odinger and conductivity equations in different settings. We also describe why some of the past methods do not work in the general case in a plane domain. Section 4 outlines Bukhgeim's result and sketches out the proof. This proof is a streamlined version of the one in Bukhgeim's paper with the stationary phase method based on Kari Astala's presentation. In the following section we prove all the needed lemmas which are combined in section 6 to prove the solvability of the inverse problem. The idea of the proof is simple. Given two Schr\"odinger equations with the same boundary data we get an orthogonality relation for the solutions of the two equations. Then we show the existence of certain oscillating solutions and insert these into the orthogonality relation. Then by a stationary phase argument we see that the two Schr\"odinger equations are the same. In the last section we contemplate an unclear detail in Bukhgeim's paper which Kari Astala pointed out in his seminar talk: without an extra argument Bukhgeim's proof shows the solvability of the inverse problem only for differentiable potentials instead of ones in L^p. But the special oscillating solutions exist even for L^p potentials.; Comment: 38 pages...

Fendley, Schoutens and van Eerten [Fendley et al., J. Phys. A: Math. Gen., 38 (2005), pp. 315-322] studied the hard square model at negative activity. They found analytical and numerical evidence that the eigenvalues of the transfer matrix with periodic boundary were all roots of unity. They also conjectured that for an m times n square grid, with doubly periodic boundary, the partition function is equal to 1 when m and n are relatively prime. These conjectures were later proven by Jonsson [Jonsson, Electronic J. Combin., 13(1) (2006), R67]. There, it was also noted that the cylindrical case seemed to have interesting properties when the circumference of the cylinder is odd. In particular, when 3 is a divisor of both the circumference and the width of the cylinder minus 1, the partition function is -2. Otherwise, it is equal to 1. In this paper, we investigate the hard square and hard hexagon models at activity -1, with single periodic boundary, i.e, cylindrical identifications, using both topological and combinatorial techniques. We compute the homology groups of the associated independence complex for small sizes and suggest a matching which, we believe, with further analysis could help solve the conjecture.; Comment: 38 pages. We collect, survey and develop methods of (one-dimensional) stochastic approximation in a framework that seems suitable to handle fairly broad generalizations of Polya urns. To show the applicability of the results we determine the limiting fraction of balls in an urn with balls of two colors. We consider two models generalizing the Polya urn, in the first one ball is drawn and replaced with balls of (possibly) both colors according to which color was drawn. In the second, two balls are drawn simultaneously and replaced along with balls of (possibly) both colors according to what combination of colors were drawn.; Comment: Licentiate thesis, 40 pages, 1 figure

## Coherent State Wave Functions on the Torus

In the study of the quantum Hall effect there are still many unresolved problems. One of these is how to generate representative wave functions for ground states on other geometries than the planar and spherical. We study one such geometry, the toroidal one, where the periodic boundary conditions must be properly taken into account. As a tool to study the torus we investigate the properties of various types of localized states, similar to the coherent states of the harmonic oscillator, which are maximally localized in phase space. We consider two alternative definitions of localized states in the lowest Landau level (LLL) on a torus. One is the projection of the coordinate delta function onto the LLL. Another definition, proposed by Haldane & Rezayi, is to consider the set of functions which have all their zeros at a single point. Since all LLL wave functions on a torus, are uniquely defined by the position of their zeros, this defines a set of functions that are expected to be localized around the point maximally far away from the zeros. These two families of localized states have many properties in common with the coherent states on the plane and on the sphere, e.g. a simple resolution of unity and a simple self-reproducing kernel. However...

This licentiate thesis is concerned with an inverse boundary value problem for the magnetic Schr\"odinger equation in a half space, for compactly supported potentials $A\in W^{1,\infty}(\bar{\mathbb{R}^3_{-}},\R^3)$ and $q \in L^{\infty}(\bar{\mathbb{R}^3_{-}},\C)$. We prove that $q$ and the curl of $A$ are uniquely determined by the knowledge of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map on parts of the boundary of the half space. The existence and uniqueness of the corresponding direct problem are also considered.; Comment: This is a licentiate thesis and will eventually be a part of a PhD thesis

The next generation of radioactive ion beam facilities, which will give experimental access to many exotic nuclei, are presently being developed. These facilities will make it possible to study very short lived exotic nuclei with extreme values of isospin far from the line of beta stability. Such nuclei will be produced with very low cross sections and to study them, new detector arrays are being developed. At the SPIRAL facility in GANIL a neutron detector array, the Neutron Wall, is located. In this work the Neutron Wall has been characterized regarding neutron detection efficiency and discrimination between neutrons and gamma rays. The possibility to increase the efficiency by increasing the high voltage of the photomultiplier tubes has also been studied. For SPIRAL2 a neutron detector array, NEDA, is being developed. NEDA will operate in a high gamma-ray background environment which puts a high demand on the quality of discrimination between neutrons and gamma rays. To increase the quality of the discrimination methods pulse-shape discrimination techniques utilizing digital electronics have been developed and evaluated regarding bit resolution and sampling frequency of the ADC. The conclusion is that an ADC with a bit resolution of 12 bits and a sampling frequency of 100 MS/s is adequate for pulse-shape discrimination of neutrons and gamma rays for a neutron energy range of 0.3-12 MeV.; Comment: Licentiate thesis...

## Coulomb blockade effects in anodised niobium nanostructures

Niobium thin film nanostructures were fabricated using electron beam lithography and a liftoff process involving a four layer resist system. Wires having micrometres in length and below 200 nm in width were deposited on an insulating substrate and subsequently thinned by anodisation. The resistance of the wires was monitored in situ and could be trimmed by controlling the anodisation voltage and time. The method appears appropriate for the fabrication of very small resistors for use as biasing resistors for single electron devices. Transport properties of these resistors were measured at millikelvin temperatures. They had nonlinear current-voltage characteristics around zero bias and showed a transistion from superconducting to insulating behaviour. Analysis of the offset voltage showed that a Coulomb blockade set in when the sheet resistance of the films exceeded the superconducting quantum resistance approx 6.45 kOhm. Samples in a single electron transistor-like geometry with two variable thickness weak links were made by combined angular evaporation of niobium and anodisation. Overlapping gate electrodes were deposited on these samples. The drain-source current-voltage characteristics could be modulated by the gate voltage, giving a response typical for a system of multiple ultrasmall tunnel junctions. The thesis contains a five page appendix with lithography recipes.; Comment: Licentiate thesis...
