The contrast between the social and urban Utopia of Thomas Moore and the English Society of the sixteenth century can be used as an excuse to reflect on the concept of Utopia as an idea that is not possible to concretize when it is proposed but can be feasible some years later. In the planning of 20th-Century New Towns we often find a strong component of Utopia due to the inadequacy to the social and/or technical conditions of the moment. The contrast between the ideal plan and the construct results (when there are any) is often strong, allowing us to consider the existing of an invisible city that is hidden behind the actual urban spaces; it can be a utopia waiting to be concretized or a dystopia caused by an unforeseen evolution of urban spaces and social dynamics. In the 1972 work of Calvino, The Invisible Cities, we find a poetic discourse about the city that can be interpreted as a critical reflection on the ideas and results of the coeval urban practices. In this paper, we intent to present an interpretation of some of the 20th Century urban ideas based on the reading of the eleven themes of this book. The links that can be established between the various Invisible Cities (moving and combining them, like the pieces of a chess game) inspire the formulation of several assumptions that can be related to the images...

## Seeing the invisible: The scope and limits of unconscious processing in binocular rivalry

When an image is presented to one eye and a very different image is presented to the corresponding location of the other eye, they compete for perceptual dominance, such that only one image is visible at a time while the other is suppressed. Called binocular rivalry, this phenomenon and its deviants have been extensively exploited to study the mechanism and neural correlates of consciousness. In this paper, we propose a framework, the unconscious binding hypothesis, to distinguish unconscious and conscious processing. According to this framework, the unconscious mind not only encodes individual features but also temporally binds distributed features to give rise to cortical representation, but unlike conscious binding, such unconscious binding is fragile. Under this framework, we review evidence from psychophysical and neuroimaging studies, which suggests that: (1) for invisible low level features, prolonged exposure to visual pattern and simple translational motion can alter the appearance of subsequent visible features (i.e. adaptation); for invisible high level features, although complex spiral motion cannot produce adaptation, nor can objects/words enhance subsequent processing of related stimuli (i.e. priming), images of objects such as tools can nevertheless activate the dorsal pathway; and (2) although invisible central cues cannot orient attention...

Theorists have offered invisible-hand justifications for a range of legal institutions, including the separation of powers, free speech, the adversary system of litigation, criminal procedure, the common law, and property rights. These arguments are largely localized, with few comparisons across contexts and no general account of how invisible-hand justifications work. This essay has two aims. The first is to identify general conditions under which an invisible-hand justification will succeed. The second is to identify several theoretical dilemmas that arise from the structure of invisible-hand justifications and that cut across local contexts. These are the dilemma of norms, which arises because norms of truth-seeking, ethical action or altruism can both promote and undermine the workings of the invisible hand; the dilemma of second best, which arises because partial compliance with the conditions for an invisible-hand justification can produce the worst of all possible worlds; and the dilemma of verification, which arises where theorists claim that an invisible-hand process functions as a Hayekian discovery procedure -- a claim that is empirical but pragmatically unverifiable.

New Museum.; ABSTRACT: This paper talks about three concepts: the invisible pedagogies concept (and its evolution from the hidden curriculum concept), the address concept and the performativity concept. In these three cases, these terms are uprooted from other research fields and planted in pedagogy and, in specifically, in the museums of visual arts education. In the second part we present the research project that is born from the three previous concepts, known as the Invisible Museum Project, and the objectives obtained in five museums: Tate Modern...

## Search for invisible decays of $\pi^0, \eta, \eta', K_S$ and $K_L$: A probe of new physics and tests using the Bell-Steinberger relation

In the standard model the rate of the $\pi^0, \eta, \eta', K_S, K_L\to \nu \overline{\nu}$ decays is predicted to be extremely small. Therefore, observation of any of these mesons ($M^0$) decaying into an invisible final state would signal the presence of new physics. The Bell-Steinberger relation connects CP and CPT violation in the mass matrix to CP and CPT violation in all decay channels of neutral kaons. It is a powerful tool for testing CPT invariance in the $K^0-\overline{K}^0$ system, assuming that there are no significant undiscovered decay modes of either $K_S$ or $K_L$ which could contribute to the precision of the results. The $K_S,K_L\to invisible$ decays have never been tested and the question of how much these decays can influence the Bell-Steinberger analysis of the kaon system still remains open. In the present work we propose a new experiment to search for the $M^0\to invisible$ decays which aims at probing new physics and answering this question. The experiment utilizes high energy hadronic beams from the CERN SPS and the charge exchange reactions of pion or kaon on nucleons of an active target, e.g. $\pi^- (K^-) + p\to M^0 + n$, as a source of the well-tagged $M^0$s emitted with the beam energy. If the decay $M^0\to invisible$ exists...

Purpose: To provide a critical review of Bergman's 2001 study on the Deep Web. In addition, we bring a new concept into the discussion, the Academic Invisible Web (AIW). We define the Academic Invisible Web as consisting of all databases and collections relevant to academia but not searchable by the general-purpose internet search engines. Indexing this part of the Invisible Web is central to scientific search engines. We provide an overview of approaches followed thus far. Design/methodology/approach: Discussion of measures and calculations, estimation based on informetric laws. Literature review on approaches for uncovering information from the Invisible Web. Findings: Bergman's size estimate of the Invisible Web is highly questionable. We demonstrate some major errors in the conceptual design of the Bergman paper. A new (raw) size estimate is given. Research limitations/implications: The precision of our estimate is limited due to a small sample size and lack of reliable data. Practical implications: We can show that no single library alone will be able to index the Academic Invisible Web. We suggest collaboration to accomplish this task. Originality/value: Provides library managers and those interested in developing academic search engines with data on the size and attributes of the Academic Invisible Web.; Comment: 13 pages...

We analyze the extent to which the LHC and Tevatron results as of the end of 2012 constrain invisible (or undetected) decays of the Higgs boson-like state at ~ 125 GeV. To this end we perform global fits for several cases: 1) a Higgs boson with Standard Model (SM) couplings but additional invisible decay modes; 2) SM couplings to fermions and vector bosons, but allowing for additional new particles modifying the effective Higgs couplings to gluons and photons; 3) no new particles in the loops but tree-level Higgs couplings to the up-quarks, down-quarks and vector bosons, relative to the SM, treated as free parameters. We find that in the three cases invisible decay rates of 23%, 61%, 88%, respectively, are consistent with current data at 95% confidence level (CL). Limiting the coupling to vector bosons, CV, to CV < 1 in case 3) reduces the allowed invisible branching ratio to 56% at 95% CL. Requiring in addition that the Higgs couplings to quarks have the same sign as in the SM, an invisible rate of up to 36% is allowed at 95% CL. We also discuss direct probes of invisible Higgs decays, as well as the interplay with dark matter searches.; Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures; v2: extended discussion on ZH associated production, references added...

## Potts Models with (17) Invisible States on Thin Graphs

The order of a phase transition is usually determined by the nature of the symmetry breaking at the phase transition point and the dimension of the model under consideration. For instance, q-state Potts models in two dimensions display a second order, continuous transition for q = 2,3,4 and first order for higher q. Tamura et al recently introduced Potts models with "invisible" states which contribute to the entropy but not the internal energy and noted that adding such invisible states could transmute continuous transitions into first order transitions. This was observed both in a Bragg-Williams type mean-field calculation and 2D Monte-Carlo simulations. It was suggested that the invisible state mechanism for transmuting the order of a transition might play a role where transition orders inconsistent with the usual scheme had been observed. In this paper we note that an alternative mean-field approach employing 3-regular random ("thin") graphs also displays this change in the order of the transition as the number of invisible states is varied, although the number of states required to effect the transmutation, 17 invisible states when there are 2 visible states, is much higher than in the Bragg-Williams case. The calculation proceeds by using the equivalence of the Potts model with 2 visible and r invisible states to the Blume-Emery-Griffiths (BEG) model...

## Invisible $K_L$ decays as a probe of new physics

The decay $K_L \to invisible$ has never been experimentally tested. In the Standard Model (SM) its branching ratio for the decay into two neutrinos is helicity suppressed and predicted to be $Br(K_L \to \nu \bar{\nu}) \lesssim 10^{-10}$. We consider several natural extensions of the SM, such as two-Higgs-doublet (2HDM), 2HDM and light scalar, and mirror dark matter models, those main feature is that they allow to avoid the helicity suppression factor and lead to an enhanced $Br(K_L \to invisible)$. For the decay $K_L \to \nu \bar{\nu}$ the smallness of the neutrino mass in the considered 2HDM model is explained by the smallness of the second Higgs doublet vacuum expectation value. The small nonzero value of the second Higgs isodoublet can arise as a consequence of nonzero quark condensate. We show that taking into account the most stringent constraints from the $K \to \pi +invisible$ decay, this process could be in the region of $Br(K_L \to invisible) \simeq 10^{-8}-10^{-6}$, which is experimentally accessible. In some scenarios the $K_L \to invisible$ decay could still be allowed while the $K \to \pi +invisible$ decay is forbidden. The results obtained show that the $K_L \to invisible$ decay is a clean probe of new physics scales well above 100 TeV...

The invisible Web, also known as the deep Web or dark matter, is an important problem for Webometrics due to difficulties of conceptualization and measurement. The invisible Web has been defined to be the part of the Web that cannot be indexed by search engines, including databases and dynamically generated pages. Some authors have recognized that this is a quite subjective concept that depends on the point of view of the observer: what is visible for one observer may be invisible for others. In the generally accepted definition of the invisible Web, only the point of view search engines has been taken into account. Search engines are considered to be the eyes of the Web, both for measuring and searching. In addition to commercial search engines, other tools have also been used for quantitative studies of the Web, such as commercial and academic crawlers. Commercial crawlers are programs developed by software companies for other purposes than Webometrics, such as Web sites management, but might also be used for crawling Web sites and reporting on their characteristics (size, hypertext structure, embedded resources, etc). Academic crawlers are programs developed by academic institutions for measuring Web sites for Webometric purposes. In this paper...

## Recent progress on formal and computational model for A. Smiths Invisible Hand paradigm

The recent economic crisis has boosted a very strong demand for quite new tools to analyze and predict the behavior of quasi-free1 markets. The paper presents our effort to build a formal theory of A. Smith’s Invisible Hand [5] paradigm (ASIH) and simulation model for a selected case. It proves that ASIH is not only an economic idea, which conflict on ways to govern [16], but something that really exists, for which formal a theory can be built. Moreover, ASIH can be measured [17], and in the future probably utilized for quasi-free market analysis and prediction. In advance, we want to state, that ASIH according to our theory, can generate both correct and incorrect decisions. For this, we use the theory of computational Collective Intelligence [18] and a molecular model of computations [1], [2]. Our theory assumes that ASIH is an unconscious meta-inference process spread on the platform of brains of agents. This meta-process is: distributed, parallel, and non-deterministic, and is run on a computational platform of market agents’ brains. The ASIH inference process emerges spontaneously in certain circumstances and can vanish when market situation changes. Since the ASIH platform is made up of brains of agents, conclusions of this inference process affect the behavior of agents and therefore the behavior of the entire market. Our research unveils that ASIH is in fact a family of similar meta-processes; thus ASIHs for different economic eras are different because corresponding models of brains of market agents are different. The paper will present and explain...

This paper presents the analysis of five narratives from the book As cidades invisíveis (Invisible Cities) by Ítalo Calvino. Such narratives, gathered under the subtitle “As cidades e as trocas” (“Cities and exchanges”), describe the cities of Euphemia, Chloe, Eutropia, Ercilia and Esmeraldina. Calvino’s book presents eleven subtitles with five narratives each. In the selected group, we identified the presence of mythology, in the figure of the god Mercury, Hermes or Thoth from the Graeco-Roman-Egyptian syncretism, in whom Calvino declared his interest more than once. This reference, which is explicit in Esmeraldina and Eutropia and implicit in Euphemia, Chloe and Ercília, aroused our interest to investigate how the discourse establishes connections with Mercury, considered, among other things, the god of roads, commerce, communication, transformation, exchange and, as he is called by Calvino himself in Eutropia, the “God of the fickle”. Through the examination of themes, figures and isotopies, concepts proposed by French Semiotics (or Greimas’ Semiotics) and their articulation with the notion of interdiscourse, presented by French Discourse Analysis (AD), we sought to verify the dialogue between literary and mythic discourses. Some principles from the Emerald Tablet – text allegedly attributed to Hermes and that designates one of the cities – helped us to confirm this interdiscoursive dialogue that is brought to Calvino’s discourse (the intradiscourse) and that is consistent with recurring themes found in this group of narratives. The analysis also enabled associations with the concept of rhizome...
