A partir da constatação do limitado investimento no design de produtos de auxílio à visão subnormal no Brasil e de sua crescente demanda, esta tese teve por objetivo analisar o estado da arte dos produtos existentes no mundo, particularmente dos que oferecem ampliação eletrônica da imagem, propor um projeto de equipamento inovador que agrega videomagnificação a uma prancha de leitura, e analisar alguns casos pioneiros de design para a saúde no Brasil, inclusive oftalmológico. Como método foram realizadas entrevistas, pesquisas bibliográficas, por internet e observação de pacientes para embasar a proposta de projeto de prancha de leitura acoplada a câmera de videomagnificação para deficientes visuais. A proposta resultante tem como base comum o produto prancha de leitura acoplada a lupa já disponível no mercado em que no lugar da lupa será colocada uma câmera de vídeomagnificação para leitura de perto. Nesta prancha de base o usuário poderá ler de modo estável comandando por sua mão o movimento do anel em volta da câmera que por sua vez excursionará horizontalmente num trilho para manter a linha e o foco de leitura constantes. Esta pesquisa aborda a aplicação do conceito do Desenho Universal no ensino do projeto de arquitetura. O objetivo geral do trabalho é aplicar uma metodologia de ensino de projeto arquitetônico que remeta a projetos qualitativos na questão da inclusão espacial. A revisão da literatura concentra-se em métodos de projeto, experiências de ensino em arquitetura e meios de comunicação apropriados para um processo de projeto participativo. Esta pesquisa adota como metodologia os preceitos da simulação/modelagem combinada com um estudo de caso. A modelagem foi feita em mapas táteis, construídos em escala e passíveis de manipulação, tendo sido investigados como instrumentos de leitura de projeto e apresentados de maneira inovadora no processo de ensino. É dada ênfase à interação entre alunos e voluntários com baixa visão através das possibilidades, potencialidades e dificuldades de participação durante o processo. O presente trabalho tem como objetivo apresentar e aplicar uma metodologia que possa ser utilizada nos diagnósticos de falhas, a priori, com causas desconhecidas ou diferentes das já conhecidas, por equipes de desenvolvimento de novos produtos. Esse tipo de falha acontece principalmente quando trata-se de produtos inovadores e ocorrem durante o processo de validação e mesmo após o início da produção. A metodologia se baseia na aplicação de Planejamento de Experimentos em conjunto com Árvore de Falhas para a quantificação das importâncias das causas raiz. Como resultado do trabalho é possível identificar quais parâmetros são os principais candidatos a causadores da falha e hierarquizar as causas. Available online 31 October 2013; Computational optimization methods are most often used to find a single or multiple optimal or near-optimal solutions to the underlying optimization problem describing the problem at hand. In this paper, we elevate the use of optimization to a higher level in arriving at useful problem knowledge associated with the optimal or near-optimal solutions to a problem. In the proposed innovization process, first a set of trade-off optimal or near-optimal solutions are found using an evolutionary algorithm. Thereafter, the trade-off solutions are analyzed to decipher useful relationships among problem entities automatically so as to provide a better understanding of the problem to a designer or a practitioner. We provide an integrated algorithm for the innovization process and demonstrate the usefulness of the procedure to three real-world engineering design problems. New and innovative design principles obtained in each case should clearly motivate engineers and practitioners for its further application to more complex problems and its further development as a more efficient data analysis procedure.

The objective of this thesis was to develop a concept and methodologies for designing a total knee replacement (TKR) with normal kinematics and a high range of motion. The design philosophy was that a TKR can function similar to the normal knee, provided that after TKR the inherent passive characteristics of the joint are restored to normal with minimum disruption in the functions of the remaining structures of the joint. As the first step prior to design, cadaver experiments were conducted and biomechanical models of the passive knee were developed to study the mechanics of the normal knee. The guiding roles of the tibial articular surface including the menisci, the combined effects of the cruciates and contact forces, and the elongation patterns of the cruciates were investigated. Based on the results obtained from these studies and the relevant information in the literature, design requirements for a TKR with normal kinematics were identified, and an innovative design concept was introduced. On the medial compartment of this design the shape of the articular surfaces resembled a ball-and-socket joint, and on the lateral side a pair of guiding bearing surfaces mimicked the guiding roles of the cruciate ligaments. The novelty in the design concept lies in the design of the shape of the lateral articular surfaces. The progressive variations of the curvature of the medial and lateral aspects of the lateral condyle generate the desired guiding effect for the full cycle of extension and flexion. The process, which involves the collaboration of various experts using domain-specific software, raises syntactic and semantic interoperability issues which are not addressed by existing software solutions or their underlying concepts. This article proposes a flexible model-based software architecture that allows for a federation of experts to define and collaborate in innovative design processes. The presented generic approach is backed and validated by its implementation on an academic usecase.

This paper describes the specifications of an interoperability platform based on the PPO (Product Process Organization) model developed by the French community IPPOP in the context of collaborative and innovative design. By using PPO model as a reference, this work aims to connect together heterogonous tools used by experts easing data and information exchanges. After underlining the growing needs of collaborative design process, this paper focuses on interoperability concept by describing current solutions and their limits. Then a solution based on the flexibility of the PPO model adapted to the philosophy of interoperability is proposed. To illustrate these concepts, several examples are more particularly described (robustness analysis, CAD and Product Lifecycle Management systems connections).

At each stage of the product development process, the designers are facing an important task which consists of decision making. Two cases are observed: the problem of concept selection in conceptual design phases and, the problem of pre-dimensioning once concept choices are made. Making decisions in conceptual design phases on a sound basis is one of the most difficult challenges in engineering design, especially when innovative concepts are introduced. On the one hand, designers deal with imprecise data about design alternatives. On the other hand, design objectives and requirements are usually not clear in these phases. The greatest opportunities to reduce product life cycle costs usually occur during the first conceptual design phases. The need for reliable multi-criteria decision aid (MCDA) methods is thus greatest at early conceptual design phases. Various MCDA methods are proposed in the literature. The main criticism of these methods is that they usually yield different results for the same problem [22,23,25]. Well known challenges in Aeronautic industry, namely reducing time to market, risks and development costs, could be reached thanks to innovative design methods supported by PLM technologies. Such methods are based on integrated design or collaborative engineering enabling close exchanges and cooperation between the project partners. The paper proposes a survey on integrated design methods and PLM technologies. It presents the development of a collaborative design platform, as part of SEINE project, which aims to improve partners’ cooperation in the French aeronautics supply chain. This paper presents a methodological contribution to ergonomics in the early stages of innovative design projects, focused on the anticipation of future needs and activities. We examined the effect, on designer activity during simulated design meetings, of a toolset using tools from Creative Problem Solving and reliability engineering, on ideation related to future uses of a product. Multidisciplinary design teams generated scenarios of future use based on the design brief of two innovative products with ill-defined uses: an interactive tabletop interface, and an innovative device to prevent drowning in infants. They worked either in an open fashion, or using brainwriting and morphological analysis to generate ideas related to elements of future use, and combine them together into scenarios. The scenarios were then subjected to claims analysis, using a modified version of the FMECA method. Analysing oral and written traces of designer activity, we measured the fluency of ideas concerning scenario components, complete scenarios, and positive or negative claims derived from these scenarios. Using a questionnaire, we assessed participants’ perceptions of self-efficacy in these work situations. In today's engineering project management, there is no lack of strategies to plan and assign task items to reduce the overall project timeline. However, as the product gets more complicated and organization gets much larger, the implementation of those strategies becomes the real challenge. Operational issues such as the objectives alignment across teams, transparent and consistent vertical and horizontal communications, and unexpected requirements changes are becoming causative factors for project delay. These issues are seen particularly often in microprocessor product development. Besides its high technology complexity, microprocessor development involves huge uncertainties, frequent changes, closely coupled inter-team efforts, and iterative design processes. The cost of microprocessor project delay is huge, not only because the development process is capital intensive, but also because the demand is technology sensitive-a project delay of several months could keep a product from entering the market and kill the project. As the design process gets more matured in this industry, firms are competing on execution. Automotive industry is facing a tough period. Production overcapacity and high fixed costs constrain companies' profits and challenge the very same existence of some corporations. Strangulated by the reduced cash availability and petrified by the organizational and products' complexity, companies find themselves more and more inadequate to stay in synch with the pace and the rate of change of consumers' and regulations' demands. To boost profits, nearly everyone pursue cost cutting. However, aggressive cost cutting as the sole approach to fattening margins results invariably in a reduction of operational capabilities which is likely to result in a decline in sales volume that leads to further cost reductions in a continuous death spiral. Long-term profitable growth requires, instead, a continuous flow of innovative products and processes. The focus should be, therefore, shifted from cost reduction to increased throughput. Automotive companies need to change their business model, morphing into new organizational entities based on systems thinking and change, which are agile and can swiftly adapt to the new business environment. Intensive end-user research in the “Affordable Housing Sector” in R.S A. became necessary to find ways to counter ever increasing delivery costs and still satisfy preferences, quality and affordability. Research has to be followed up by innovative designs and lower cost and faster construction methods without forfeiting quality and aesthetics. Land cost and density design balanced with environmental quality became of utmost importance in any sustainable development. The same accounts for locality to achieve neighbourhood revitalization. A typical example is the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropole in South Africa where 100,000 dwellings need to be constructed in3-5 years to wipe out the back-log. The amount of data relating to a single dwelling is vast and with a large development even more significant. Traditionally the data is stored in diverse locations, for example, with government authorities, architects or other professionals, a developer, sub-contractor, conveyancer, financial institution or owner. Understanding the importance of tea in our daily life and provides in depth research on the history of tea, the culture behind drinking tea, the benefits of drinking tea as well as some key statistics involving the world tea consumption. Various health hazards of drinking hot tea or cooling the tea by blowing air from the mouth have been listed at length. This, in turn, throws light on the necessity of coming up with an innovative design for the teapot, teacups, and the accompanying items i.e. the teaspoons and the saucers. Prior to designing the tea set, various materials for the making of the tea set have been analyzed along with the study of the evolution of the tea sets and their design across centuries. For this thesis and the tea set designed, the prominent designer whose work was researched was Christopher Dresser, the 18th century modern designer who is thought to be the forerunner of modern design built on form, simple linear design, and function. The design process involved extensive brainstorming and developing the design mock-ups for the tea sets. With the identified design guidelines in mind, the most suitable design was then finalized. Prasad; The goal of this thesis is to provide an understanding of a practical portable direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) stack system as well as produce a fuel cell stack that can be used for testing and demonstration purposes. DMFCs are relevant because of the high energy density that the fuel (methanol) affords. However, there are several key limitations ??? DMFCs suffer from greater activation, ohmic, and crossover losses than a standard Hydrogen Fuel Cell, as well as having a larger restriction on maximum current draw. This paper is about an innovative design for an urban Darrieus Vertical Axis Wind Turbine (VAWT), having the ability of having self-start at low wind velocities, but without the need for extra components or external electricity feed-in. A new mathematical model to assess complex shaped Darrieus VAWT prototype is presented in this paper and offers a new approach to the Double Multiple Streamtube model. Field tests to assess the behavior of the prototype and main conclusions are presented.

This paper goes back fifty years to a period that can be considered the birth of the computational design research. During the sixties the computer was only accessible to a few mathematicians or programmers and it becomes object of a much wider theorization and influence. Calculus and mathematical logic inherent to the computer support the emergence of areas including the information theory and the operational research, which would call the attention of social science and arts. Some Design and Architecture Research Centers, in the UK and the USA start using the computer to support design methodologies based on analysis and mathematical logic as well as to assist the design conception process. A similar approach can also be found at he Hochschule für Gestaltung Ulm (HfG-Ulm), in Germany, founded in 1953 by the Swiss architect Max Bill. Despite its short existence, it was considered a very important school in the twentieth century, where a remarkable group of teachers and ideas converged. In this context, this paper describes the relevance of the HfG Ulm regarding the exploration of scientific analysis methods associated with the Design Process.
