Studies that compare physiology, anatomy, and ecology across species have offered some of the best insight into adaptation and evolutionary constraints in plants. As a result, the comparative approach has become increasingly used in studies of plant physiological ecology. The high species diversity of Brazilian biomes provides many excellent opportunities for comparative plant ecophysiology, and could be better exploited for understanding the evolution of plant form and function. In this paper we emphasize the importance of considering phylogenetic information for the design and analysis of comparative studies, relying on examples from comparisons of woody plants from cerrado and gallery (riparian) forests. The use of congeneric species pairs, each containing one cerrado species and one forest species of the same genus, greatly improves statistical power while assuring phylogenetic independence, an essential condition for inference in comparative studies. For example, in a study of seedlings of nine cerrado species and nine forest species, when we ignore phylogenetic relationships, it is not be possible to conclude that cerrado and forest species differ with regard to leaf area ratio (LAR), specific leaf area (SLA), or seedling height. SUMMARY: The adoption of no-till techniques in the Brazilian Savanna, it becomes interesting to the vegetal cover formation that has low speed of decomposition. Crave yet that the specie chosen is able to suppress the weeds, especially the difficult to control as well as being easily controlled by herbicides used in desiccation. In order to meet these demands, two tests have been developed. In the first trial assessed the coverage of soil and the accumulation of dry biomass provided by Urochloa ruziziensis cv. Kennedy, U. decumbens cv. Basilisk, U. brizantha cv. BRS Piatã and without Urochloa (spontaneous vegetation). It was found that the Urochloas presented coverage of top soil to spontaneous vegetation, greater accumulation of dry weight of shoot and reduction of weed dry mass, in which the U. ruziziensis stood out from other species by the quick establishment and the mastery on the area. In the second test it was verified the efficacy of desiccation by dosages of glyphosate herbicide, evaluated at various dates after application. It is concluded that U. ruziziensis is controlled effectively in less time and lower dosage of glyphosate that other species of Urochloas searched. Agricultural species face several biotic and abiotic stresses that are the main limiting factors for crop production. In this context, contamination by trace-elements is characterized as an abiotic stress, representing an environmental issue. Cadmium is a powerful enzyme inhibitor and, given that it is a non-essential element, it can damage plant cells, even in low concentrations. Plant exposure to this trace-element results in many damages to plant physiological metabolism and injures the photosynthetic system, triggering the production of oxygen reactive species in photosynthetically active tissues. Zinc is a co-factor for several enzymes, and is involved in both regulation and activation of such molecules. In addition, it is also involved in the regulation processes of signal transcription, translation, and transduction. Because of its importance for plant metabolism, the concentration of this element must be kept within a relatively narrow range to avoid the effects of either deficiency or toxicity. Toxic metals are compound that settle naturally from the rocks and they are release slowly in the soil by mineral weathering. The essential elements for plant nutrition when in higher concentrations can produce harmful effects to vegetable. The radish is a short cycle vegetable, it was used because can be employed in rotation with other economic cultures, and also it has been characterized for several searchers that aim as a model species to study heavy metals such as: Zn, Pb and Cd. For that reason, the work was done in order to evaluate the seeds physiologic quality, characteristics of growth, and assimilate partition in radish plants grown under different concentrations of metals. The research was realized in three experiments, the first was conducted in the Seeds Physiological Laboratory of DB/UFPel, measuring the physiologic quality of the radish seeds cv. The pear crop in southern Brazil emerges as a consistent alternative to the diversification of temperate fruit. However, temperature variations influence the physiological processes involved in internal input and output dormancy that may be connected to the anatomy, physiology and metabolism of the plant. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the characteristics and the possible involvement morphoanatomic levels of protein, carbohydrate, calcium and iron flower bud abortion in pear cultivar Nijisseik, in southern Brazil. It were determined the numbers of primordia, doubles inflorescences, length, diameter, volume, total carbohydrate content, total protein content, calcium and iron in gems. The number of primordia was higher in the second and the fourth harvest showing sharp reduction from fourth to fifth collection. The first to the second collection was significantly decreased length of gems, with a slight increase which was maintained in the other harvests. The diameter and volume decreased during the collections. The total carbohydrate had variations during the months of collection, a reduction during the month of august with a significant drop until september. A characteristic of plants and other sessile organisms is their ability to synthesize a wide variety of low molecular weight compounds, called secondary metabolites. Among these compounds are the betalains, hydrophilic molecules of two types: red-violet betalains and yellow betaxanthins. These phytochemicals have been widely used because of their high antioxidant activity and free radicals scavenging. The light intensity and quality are important factors in plant growth and development and specific changes in light quality severely affect physiological, morphological and biochemical plant parameters. Thus, the aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of light quality on growth and accumulation of secondary metabolites from callus and plant species of the genus Alternanthera, as well as a protocol establishment for callus induction of these plants. The species A. brasiliana, A. philoxeroides and A. sessilis had their explants placed on MS medium with different combinations of growth regulators. The objective of this work was to analyze and to describe the influence of aqueous extracts of Echinochloa cruzgalli L., Cyperus sp. and Sagittaria montevidensis about the physiological quality of the seeds and growth of seedlings of rice Atalanta . The extracts were acquired from species collected on rice planting areas and in the campus of UFPel. The essays were accomplished at laboratory with different concentrations (zero, 25, 50, 75 and 100%) of aqueous extracts of leaves (vegetal fresh material, w/v). The rice Atalanta seeds were put to soak for 60 minutes in the different aqueous extracts and concentrations, and then conducted to germination, first counting of germination, germination speed rate, aerial part and root length, and electric conductivity tests. It could be observed that the extracts did not have influence about the germination and first germination counting, but there was influence in the germination speed rate and in the leaching of reserve compounds. Maytenus ilicifolia Mart. ex Reis., popularly known as espinheira-santa, is an autochthonous specie belonging to Celastraceae family. Presents high medicinal value for treatment of ulcers, chronicle gastritis, dyspepsia and indigestion. Due its medicinal importance, have been an increase of extractivism in natural populations. So, this specie is priority for conservation, to avoid the risk of genetic erosion. The tissue culture is important because allows massive production of plants free from pathogenic agents and genetically uniforms. The in vitro establishment is the first phase of the micro propagation process, where the plant material used can vary according to the finality of the work. Studies evidence that genetic flux by seeds or pollen grains, and also the environment, mainly the habitats, has the potential to improve the genetic variability of populations from one locality. The objective of this work was to establish and evaluate the capacity of in vitro multiplication of M. ilicifolia plantlet, and also analyze by AFLP the genetic variability of 20 accessions collected in different localities from Rio Grande do Sul State. For the in vitro establishment previously disinfected seeds were inoculated in three different media: MS; MS + Active Coal (1g L-1) and MS + Vermiculite. The variables analyzed were plantlet height and root length. For the molecular analysis it was tested eight primers combinations. Values of genetic similarities were calculated by Simple-matching coefficient and used to generate a similarity dendrograma by UPGMA method. The analyzed variables showed significant differences. The production of plum is an important commodity around the world. In Brazil, the state of Rio Grande do Sul is the major producer. However, despite the great potential for cultivation, some factors are limiting for increasing the production, such as: a) climate variability; b) use of inadequate stocks; c) pollination of most cultivar is self-incompatible d) doubtful genetic history of the plant material. Considering these problems, the aim of this work was to identify allele-S related to gametophytic self- incompatibility in Prunus salicina (Lindl.) and to perform the molecular characterization of cultivars by means of microsatellites locus. Oilseed rape (Brassica napus L.) belongs to the family Brassicaceae and constitutes the third most produced oilseed in the world, surpassed only by soybean and palm. Flooding of soil and low temperatures can cause alterations in cellular metabolism and impair plant growth, generating a stress condition. Two experiments were conducted using the canola hybrid Hyola 43, Hyola 401, Hyola 420 and Hyola 432. The first was conducted in greenhouse where 10 plants of each hybrid were subjected to stress by flooding for a period of six days. Were evaluated parameters and differences in the kinetics of emission of chlorophyll fluorescence, chlorophyll content, leaf area and dry weight of shoot and root. The flooding caused a reduction of leaf area, root dry mass and root dry mass/shoot dry mass ratio of all hybrids studied. In relation to chlorophyll fluorescence were identified differences in parameters related to specific flows that have undergone changes as a function of stress the latter being more pronounced for Hyola 432. The performace photosynthetic index (PIABS and PIABS,total) showed a decrease after 6 days of the experiment except for hybrid Hyola 420. Medicinal plants are widely used, therefore they are important sources of natural chemical products. However, they can present problems in their use with regard to quality and to genetic identity of the vegetal material. Molecular techniques contribute in the identification of species through the construction of fingerprints, whereas the tissue culture has important hole for providing massive production of plants, free of pathogenic agents and genetically uniforms. Plectranthus includes species that are commonly know as boldo for having anti-dyspeptics and analgesic properties, and stimulant of digestion. The aim of this work was to evaluate the genetic diversity among four species of Plectranthus genus, through RAPD technique and quantitative analysis of their essential oils and to verify the in vitro micropropagation. The DNA extraction and amplification of four Plectranthus species (P. grandis, P. barbatus, P. neochilus e P. amboinicus) was carried out by RAPD. Plant metabolism is sensitively to changes in oxygen availability by waterlogging. The immediate consequences of oxygen depletion are the activation of anaerobic metabolism and a reduction in energy production. This study aimed to evaluate the fermentative metabolism in soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merrill] roots and nodules under hypoxia and post-hypoxia conditions. Two experiments were conducted in greenhouse conditions with soybean genotypes Fundacep 53 RR and BRS Macota grown in 3L pots containing vermiculite as substrate, in association with Bradyrhizobium elkanii. The treatments were applied when the plants reached the R2 stage (reproductive). Experiment I - the root system of plants was subjected to hypoxia by fitting a second pot without holes and flooded with nutrient solution diluted to one-third of the original, in order to keep a blade of 20 mm on the surface of the substrate. Plants were maintained flooded for eight days, and so the pot without drilling holes was removed for recovery assessment. Non-waterlogging plants were maintained as control (normoxic condition). Pear orchards with high density planting were possible due to the use of rootstock quince (Cydonia oblonga Mill.), thus obtaining small plants and rapid fruiting, and provide uniformity to these orchards. Techniques that may improve the ability to propagation this rootstock are of great interest. The aim of this study was to adjust protocols for in vitro multiplication and regeneration of quince cultivars MC and Adams. The results of this word are presented in chapter. Material used in the experiments was obtained from in vitro propagation in culture medium consisting of MS salts and vitamins supplemented with myo-inositol (100 mg L-1), 6 - benzylaminopurine (BA) (0.3 mg L-1), sucrose (30 g L-1) and agar (8 g L-1). Chapter 1 we used MS medium added agar (8 g L-1) on solidified medium and vermiculite (3 g flask-1) in the liquid medium and the flasks were sealed with aluminum foil, PVC film and polypropylene cap. They have been mapped the eco-physiological and biochemical parameters of the coffee canopy metabolism. For this, the evaluations were conducted in coffee (Coffea arabica L.) cultivar Catuaí Vermelho, measuring 1.7 meters in height. It was established a vertical gradient (the apex of the plants to the base of the skirt) and a horizontal gradient (reproductive branches) to analyze different positions of the canopy. Thus, in the vertical direction were analyzed four times in a plant: top, top, middle and bottom, and horizontally, the reproductive branches were subdivided into three parts: basal, middle and apical, with the basal part one that gets smaller light intensity and the apical that receives higher. The gathering was held on the east and west side of the canopy, in four hours of the day, which are: 6, 9, 12 and 15 hours, totaling 24 sampling points in each zone. Gas exchange, water potential, biochemical analysis of cloroplastideos pigment content, carbohydrates and enzymes of antioxidant metabolism were made. The gas exchange characteristics of an individual coffee leaf differ considerably from other sheets, which requires caution when sizing estimates leaf photosynthesis globally canopy. Se ha desarrollado un material multimedia multiplataforma que cubre los contenidos necesarios para el estudio y la preparación de determinadas prácticas de laboratorio de la asignatura de Métodos y Técnicas en Biología Vegetal, que se imparten en el área de Conocimiento de Fisiología Vegetal de la licenciatura de Biología. Mediante este soporte audiovisual, se permite el seguimiento de los experimentos prácticos utilizando la secuenciación de los mismos a través de imágenes y textos que facilitan la comprensión de cada una de las etapas de que consta la práctica. La utilización de las nuevas TIC no implica apostar por la desaparición de la docencia tradicional, pero se hace necesaria integrarlas a ambas como nuevas herramientas que permitan al alumno interrelacionar los conocimientos teóricos con los experimentales o prácticos.
