A dissertação baseada principalmente em depoimentos orais e escritos estuda questões identitárias envolvidas na participação destes expedicionários.; When Brazil participated in the Second World War, the Brazilian immigrant communities that were related to the Axis Power suffered persecutions by governmental authorities as well as attacks made by the press and part of the population. In the German communities there were ideals based on Pan-Germanism including the use of German language and customs; feelings of belonging to Germany were common among its inhabitants. Beside other members of the Brazilian Expeditionary Force (FEB), people from these communities were also drafted. The research, based on different sources especially oral and written testimonies focuses on identity questions about these combatants.

The Southern Cross), which was published by the Brazilian Expeditionary Force, in Italy in 1945, where his writings dealt with the actions of the Brazilian military in a context almost always of support, to incentivate a troop who had finished the year 1944 with a low moral, because of the losses suffered in the bloody firefight to try to conquer the Monte Castello. In its sections, the performance of the FEB was exposed under an almost perfectibity...

The views expressed in this report are those of the authors and do not reflect the offical policy or position of the Department of Defense or the U.S. Government.; A systems engineering approach to the design of a ship which will satisfy the requirements for a Maritime Prepositioning Force (MPF) for the year 2010 and beyond is presented. This ship, the MPF 2010, will provide the means by which the United States Marine Corps will be able to successfully employ the tenets of Operational Maneuver From the Sea (OMFTS) and the Ship-to-Objective Maneuver (STOM) against an objective. The current Maritime Prepositioning Ship (MPS) squadrons are used to preposition supplies, vehicles, and equipment throughout the world for use by a Marine Air-Ground Task Force (MAGTF) of Marine Expeditionary Force - Forward, MEF (FWD) size, in times of crisis. However, these squadrons presently require that a secure airfield and port (or beachhead) be available so that the prepositioned MPS assets can be offloaded and married with arriving MAGTF personnel ashore. As such, the current MPS squadrons do not support the concepts of OMFTS and STOM. The MPF 2010 will provide the capability to embark a MEF (FWD), marry the MEF (FWD) with its prepositioned equipment while en route to the objective...

Meteor Burst Communications (MBC) is explored in relation to its usefulness to Marine Expeditionary Force Communications. A description of the physics and geometry of meteor trail propagation is presented. Communication techniques used to exploit the phenomenon are discussed. Current MBC circuits have operational ranges of 1200 miles without relay and maintain average data rates of 60 to 150 Bits per Second(BPS). MBC is primarily limited by the physics and geometry of the propagation medium and its usefulness is bounded by its slow data rate. Within these boundaries however, several significant use of MBC are identified. Keywords: Theses. (fr)

Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited; Non-deployed United States Marine Corps (USMC) ground units are in a degraded state of supply readiness as a result of over a decade of war. Due to current fiscal constraints and budget pressures the USMC cannot purchase new ground equipment to replenish its units. The USMC must repair current ground equipment used in Operation Enduring Freedom, much of which has greatly exceeded its normal peacetime usage. In order for the USMC to remain a force in readiness equipment must replenish the non-deployed unit home station quickly. This research analyzes the time it takes to repair an equipment item received from Afghanistan and be sent to a non-deployed unit. We do this by analyzing the Retrograde and Redeployment in Support of Reset and Reconstitution (R4) efforts performed at the Marine Expeditionary Force (MEF) level, specifically I MEF Support Team (1st MST). We use queueing theory and simulation methods to develop an analytical model in which we draw conclusions from. Using 1st MST R4 data, we capture the amount of time required to repair ground equipment and identify the driving factors most affecting this time.

Paper for the C4ISR/C2Track: Paper # 364, 10th International Command and Control Research & Technology Symposium; An Expeditionary Strike Group (ESG) is a new capability mix that combines the combat power of three surface combatants and one submarine with an Amphibious Readiness Group/ Marine Expeditionary Unit (Special Operations Capable) (ARG/MEU(SOC)). ESGs provide Combatant Commanders with more flexible, robust, and distributed offensive combat capability and enhance Naval expeditionary force survivability. Beginning in 2002, the Navy and Marine Corps began an experiment to explore the offensive and defensive capabilities of the ESG as well as different command structure options. This paper describes the initial effort by the Adaptive Architectures for Command and Control research program to support the analysis and design of ESG-1 command structures through modeling and analysis.

Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited; The Marine Corps is the nation’s expeditionary force in readiness and is ready to act in any capacity, at any time, and any place. A critical enabler to the success of the Marine Corps against technologically advanced adversaries in remote, austere environments, is the ability to effectively exploit space-based capabilities to maximize the operational effectiveness of the force. To this end, the Marine Corps has invested in a number of tactical space-trained personnel but has not yet fully begun to integrate space operations into Marine Expeditionary Force training, exercises, and deployments. This thesis reveals how dependent the Marine Corps is on space-based capabilities and reviews the current methods by which each Marine Expeditionary Force integrates space into day-to-day operations. This study finds that current progress is hindered due to a poor understanding among staff members of what space can bring to the fight, a non-standardized organizational structure within the Fires and Effects Coordination Center, the absence of uniform space training and assessment criteria, sparse equipment, and a critical lack of dedicated space-trained personnel to help plan for, train to...

Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited; As our adversaries continue to evolve in complexity, the U.S. Marines adapt in kind with its design and intent through its Expeditionary Force 21 (EF 21) Capstone. EF 21 stresses the need for increased persistent intelligence collections capabilities and the optimization of existing assets. Current requirements for Unattended Ground Sensors (UGS) limit usage in non-permissive environments beyond the Area of Operations, contrary to the new demands of EF 21. UGS shortfalls include the technologies in use and the capability of the Marines employing them. The fusion of reconnaissance Marines with commercial state-of-the-art UGS expands the current ground intelligence collections capability to be rapid and adaptable for EF 21. This concept required researching the reconnaissance and intelligence battalions, the UGS associated individual standards, and existing UGS from McQ Incorporated and the Defense Advance Research Products Agency. Analysis of this research consisted of a Systems Engineering approach applied the Doctrine, Organizations, Training, Materials, Leadership, Personnel, and Facilities fields for UGS. The result was a new table of organization for the Marines ground sensor platoons...

Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited; Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited; The United States Marine Corps and the Marine Corps’ intelligence community recognize that future adversaries are likely to be adaptive and complex. Both the Expeditionary Force 21 (EF 21) Capstone Concept and the Marine Corps Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance Enterprise (MCISRE) Roadmap identify the need for advanced intelligence analysis. This thesis argues that social network analysis (SNA) is a worthwhile method, but one that is not currently used within the MCISRE. The purpose of this research is to determine the SNA knowledge level within the MCISRE and to recommend ways to bridge the gap between current knowledge with the knowledge required by the EF 21 and MCISRE Roadmap. A mixed-method approach combines a quantitative survey, meant to determine current SNA knowledge and proficiency, and qualitative interviews with various subject matter experts to determine corrective recommendations. Survey results and interviews indicate that Marine Corps intelligence personnel are not proficient in SNA and that SNA is often confused with other forms of intelligence analysis, such as link analysis and social media analysis (SMA). Causal factors for these deficiencies are discussed using the Doctrine...

Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited; This thesis reviews the state of expeditionary logistics within the U.S. Marine Corps. Expeditionary logistics is further defined within this thesis as the support given to an expeditionary operation. This study further categorizes expeditionary logistics according to the phase of the operation in which they occur. This insight gives greater understanding into when and where different assets and strategies are utilized in order to support Marines deployed abroad, and why the methods employed are used. A hypothetical yet realistic case study based on a Marine unit deployed in support of a humanitarian aid disaster relief mission was developed to assist with understanding the conduct of expeditionary logistics within the Marine Corps. This case study provides insight with regard to the methods employed to sustain a force abroad. The case study also provides scale and timing to aid in the general flow of supplying an expeditionary operation. This thesis provides recommendations where improvements can be made in the Marine Corps’ process of conducting expeditionary operations. Further study opportunities are identified to provide guidance for further research on the conduct of Marine Corps Expeditionary Logistics.; ; Major...

The USMC Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) is commonly referred to as "the nation's 911 force." It must be capable of executing a full spectrum of missions from low-intensity humanitarian assistance and noncombat evacuations to high-intensity major combat operations. The structure and equipment are designed around this multimission requirement. However, the USMC owns the fixed-winged Shadow unmanned aircraft system (UAS), and is in the process of acquiring a small fixed-wing UAS, the small tactical UAS (STUAS) to provide intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance. The USMC is also researching a cargo resupply UAS based on helicopter technology. The USMC focus on single mission UAS does not fit with the MEU's mission requirements. This thesis will examine MEU mission requirements and recommend a UAS capability set that best supports MEU operations. From this recommended set of requirements, the thesis will use a cost analysis to determine a future UAS program of record.; US Marine Corps (USMC) author

This thesis aims at the investigation of how the issue of conflicting memories about the participation of the Brazilian Expeditionary Force (BEF) during World War II is configured today . To accomplish this goal, it was necessary to take into account not only the political players that act in this process – among others: State, Army, Veteran's Associations and society – as well as the fluctuations and appropriations of their memory. This historical-social study aimed to examine the symbolic elements that express the hierarchizing division between the male and female, contained in newspaper reports published about the return home of the nurses who worked in the Brazilian Expeditionary Force's Health Service, and to discuss the symbolic effects these reports produced. The historical sources of the study, consisting of photographic, written and oral documents, were classified and analyzed in the light of Pierre Bourdieu's Social Theory and Michelle Perrot's studies on Women's History. The research revealed that the way the news reports about the arrival of these nurses to Brazil were disseminated represented the reproduction of a symbolic strategy to enforce political and social interests in force, and that contained the ideas about the hierarchizing division of the social world into male and female.
