Os simuladores de direção são ferramentas de pesquisa que permitem estudar o comportamento do condutor em diversos cenários de direção, de forma rápida, segura e econômica. Este estudo faz parte de um projeto de pesquisa que visa utilizar essas ferramentas na avaliação de projetos de sinalização, antes da sua implantação na rodovia. Em particular, o objetivo deste trabalho foi analisar como os condutores percebem a sinalização vertical dentro de um ambiente simulado de direção, apoiado no uso de um sistema de rastreio do olhar. O andamento da pesquisa abrangeu a montagem do simulador e do sistema de rastreio do olhar, a geração do ambiente simulado de direção, o experimento no simulador para medir a percepção da sinalização dentro do ambiente virtual, e por último, a análise e validação dos resultados. No experimento, 21 condutores dirigiram em um trecho de 10 quilômetros da rodovia BR-116 que possui 31 sinais de trânsito, para mensurar a distância de percepção, o número de fixações e o tempo de observação da sinalização, assim como a variação da velocidade após percepção da mesma. Methods: Eighteen patients with severe SAHS performed a driving simulator test at baseline (before treatment) and at days 1, 3, and 7 of a 2 week CPAP trial period. CPAP was then discontinued and the patients performed three further driving simulator tests after 1, 3, and 7 days. Eighteen patients with severe SAHS acted as controls and performed the driving simulator test on seven occasions in a pattern similar to that of the treated patients.

Pregabalin, a novel agent for treating partial epilepsy and peripheral neuropathic and central pain, was studied for its effect on driving performance in healthy volunteers. Sixteen healthy male volunteers who drove regularly were enrolled in a double-blind, parallel-group, placebo-controlled study assessing the effect of pregabalin on driving performance. Subjects received an oral dose of pregabalin 75 mg or placebo, and a second dose 12 hours later. A driving simulator was used to test simple and complicated braking reaction time, and simple and complicated steering-wheel techniques before the first dose, and 1 hour and 3 hours after the second dose of pregabalin or placebo. The effect of training during the driving test on the driving performance of each group was also evaluated. There were no statistically significant differences in driving performance between the pregabalin and the placebo groups. However, the pregabalin group showed no significant improvement in steering-wheel skills with training, whereas the placebo group showed a significant (P<0.05) improvement with training. This study proposes a method and an experimental validation to analyze dynamics response of the drivers with respect to the type of the control used in the hexapod driving simulator. In this article, two different forms of motion platform tracking control have been performed: - Classical motion cueing algorithm - LQR motion cueing algorithm For each situation, the EMG (electromyography) data have been registered from arm muscles of the drivers (flexor carpi radialis, brachioradialis). Study Objective: To determine the combined effects of sleep restriction and low-dose alcohol on driving simulator performance, EEG, and subjective levels of sleepiness and performance in the mid-afternoon. Design: Repeated measures with 4 experimental conditions. Normal sleep without alcohol, sleep restriction alone (4 hours) and sleep restriction in combination with 2 different low blood alcohol concentrations (0.025 g/dL and 0.035 g/dL). Setting: Sleep Laboratory, Adelaide Institute for Sleep Health. Participants: Twenty-one healthy young men, aged 18-30 years, mean (±SD) = 22.5(±3.7) years, BMI = 25(±6.7) kg/m2; all had normal sleep patterns and were free of sleep disorders. Measurements: Participants completed a 70-minute simulated driving session, commencing at 14:00. Driving parameters included steering deviation, braking reaction time, and number of collisions. Study Objectives: It has been suggested that the Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MWT) may be clinically useful to assess fitness to drive, yet little is known about the actual relationship between sleep latency and driving performance. This study examined the ability of 2 MWT trials to predict driving-simulator performance in healthy individuals. Patients or Participants: Twenty healthy volunteers (mean age 22.8 years; 9 men). Interventions: NA. Measurements and Results: The MWT and driving-simulator performance were examined under 2 conditions—partial sleep deprivation and a combination of partial sleep deprivation and alcohol consumption. Each subject was studied a week apart, with the order randomly assigned. Subjects completed a nighttime 70-minute AusEd driving simulation task and two 40-minute MWT trials, 1 before (MWT1) and 1 after (MWT2) the driving task. In the sleep-deprived condition, the MWT1 sleep latency was inversely correlated with braking reaction time. During the partial sleep deprivation and alcohol condition, the number of microsleeps during the driving task, steering deviation, braking reaction time, and crashes all negatively correlated with the MWT1 sleep latency. Additionally, construction of a receiver-operator characteristic curve revealed that MWT1 sleep latency in the partial sleep deprivation plus alcohol condition significantly discriminated subjects who had a crash from those who did not. Study Objectives: To assess the effectiveness of CPAP treat¬ment in improving 90-minute driving simulator performance in severe OSA patients compared to age/gender matched con¬trols. Design: Driving simulator performance was assessed at base-line and 3 months later, with OSA patients treated with CPAP during the interval. Setting: University Teaching Hospital. Participants: Patients with severe OSA (n = 11) and control subjects without OSA (n = 9). Interventions: CPAP Measurements and Results: Simulator driving parameters of steering deviation, braking reaction time and crashes were measured at baseline and ~3 months follow-up. At baseline, OSA subjects demonstrated significantly greater steering de¬viation compared to controls (mean [95% CI], OSA group, 49.9 cm [43.7 to 56.0 cm] vs control group, 34.9 cm [28.1 to 41.7 cm], p = 0.003). Following ~3 months of CPAP treatment (mean ± SD 6.0 ± 1.4 h/night), steering deviation in OSA subjects improved by an average of 3.1 cm (CI, 1.4 to 4.9), p < 0.001, while no significant steering changes were observed in the control group. Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is a common sleep disorder associated with neurobehavioural daytime abnormalities including poor driving simulator performance and an increased risk of motor-vehicle accidents. Treating OSA with continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) significantly improves many of the daytime consequences of OSA. Until recently it was believed that CPAP treatment can completely resolve excessive daytime sleepiness and neurobehavioural abnormalities associated with OSA. However, recent evidence suggests that compared to results in well-matched healthy subjects, levels of daytime vigilance and cortical activation and some domains of cognitive function in OSA patients may not return to normal, even after effective OSA treatment with good treatment compliance. Sleep restriction and low-dose alcohol consumption are common “life style” factors that have a negative impact on the central nervous system and driving performance in healthy subjects. In this experiment, 28 participants completed an urban driving task in a highly immersive driving simulator at Renault’s Technical Centre for Simulation. This simulator provides a 150 deg field of view in a fully instrumented cockpit. Two different eco-driving assistance devices were added: a visual display on the midconsole and a force feedback system on the gas pedal, in order to apply an additionnal reaction torque on drivers’ foot. The feedback information was computed by comparing the car’s instant acceleration with an optimal acceleration level based on a proprietary consumption model of a Renault diesel engine. This experiment has three main goals: I. Assess the contribution of verbal instructions to eco-driving performance; II. Quantify the additional contribution generated by two eco-driving assistance systems (visual and haptic); III. Measure drivers’ acceptance of haptic eco-driving assistance system. Basic eco-driving instructions, such as changing gears under 2000 Rpm, yield significant decrease of polluting emissions. Assisting drivers with visual, haptic, or visual-haptic on-board devices, in addition to low engine speed verbal instructions, lead to supplementary significant savings of polluting emissions. The use of driving simulators is part of RENAULT’s approach for eco-driving development. The geDRIVER project objectives were to: develop ECO mode for all, taking into account eco-driving criteria; develop a training business offer and develop specific assistance HMI (Human Machine Interface). In terms of driving simulation, this induced a need to develop a wide range deployment training tools integrating multisensorial feedback, enhanced gameplay for scenario design, and driving analysis tool into ECO² simulator. Several experiments were carried out, in order to evaluate validity of simulation for an eco-driving training purpose. Results show that visual indicators is the most appropriate and that the eco-driving rule “gear up at 2500 rpm” is the most efficient. At last, the simulator appears to be an efficient tool, to understand and integrate eco-driving rules, and to improve economies in terms of CO2 emissions.

This paper deals with the effects of different washout algorithms used for Stewart platforms on subjective and objective ratings. Washout algorithms are used to represent vehicle dynamics in a restricted spatial place. An adaptive washout algorithm was realized to control the hexapod platform, depending on the specific force error in longitudinal, lateral and vertical directions, in order to compare user‟s experience with those in the case of classical algorithm. In this study, the simulator sickness has been evaluated for three algorithms in dynamic driving simulator situation in objective and subjective way.

This paper shows the effect of adding vibrations in a car cabin during driving simulation on driver perception. Actually, current dynamic driving simulators induce the simulator sickness and it still difficult for the driver to project himself in the virtual reality due to a lack of perception. To know the effect of vibrations on a subject, the effect of the whole body vibration must be defined, as the sources of vibration in a car cabin. After determining all the parameters we propose to determine a formula to produce the vibrations in function of the car state, the road and the boundary conditions. Then experimentation with nine subjects is done to define the exact effect of the vibrations and the new perception of the road in the simulation. In order to do these experimentations, three actuators were installed inside the cabin of the car driving simulator from Institut Image – Arts et Metiers ParisTech.

This paper explains the effect of a motion platform closed loop control comparing to the static condition for driving simulators on postural instability. The postural instabilities of the participants (N=18, 15 male and 3 female subjects) were measured as lateral displacements of subject body centre of pressure (YCP ) just before and after each driving session via a balance platform. After having completed the experiments, the two-tailed Mann-Whitney U test was applied to analyze the objective data for merely the post-exposure cases. The objective data analysis revealed that the YCP for the dynamic case indicated a significant lower value than the static situation (U(18), p < 0,0001). It can be concluded that the closed loop tracking control of the hexapod platform of the driving simulator (dynamic platform condition) decreased significantly the lateral postural stability compared to the static operation condition. However the two-tailed Mann-Whitney U test showed that no significant difference was obtained between the two conditions in terms of psychophysical perception.

In this article, we present an experiment whose goal is to show the impact of adding transverse rumble strips on the driver’s behavior. Actually rumble strips are used to increase the security on dangerous crossroad. To do this we developed a system that allows reproducing rumble strips in simulation using vibrations. The system is mounted on a dynamic driving simulator and the simulation is made with ScanerStudio.

In this article, an experimental procedure is presented in order to evaluate the role of having HMD oculus and (Eco2 driving simulator) in terms of driving simulation sickness. The driving simulation sickness is investigated with respect to SSQ (simulator sickness questionnaire) and vestibular dynamics (head movements) of the driver participants for a specific driving scenario. The scenario of driving task is created by using open source “iiVR (institut image virtual reality)” software which is developed by Institut Image Arts et Métiers ParisTech. Arts et Metiers ParisTech built up the SAAM driving simulator with the partnership of Renault and Grand Chalon. This research was realized in the framework of the geDRIVER project.; This study proposes a method and an experimental validation to analyze dynamics response of the simulator's cabin and platform with respect to the type of the control used in the hexapod driving simulator. In this article, two different forms of motion platform tracking control are performed as a classical motion cueing algorithm and a discrete-time linear quadratic regulator (LQR) motion cueing algorithm. For each situation, vehicle dynamics and motion platform level data are registered from the driving simulation software. In addition, the natural frequencies of the roll accelerations are obtained in real-time by using FFT. The data are denoised by using wavelet 1D transformation. The results show that by using discrete-time LQR algorithm, the roll acceleration amplitudes that correspond to the natural frequencies and the total roll jerk have decreased at the motion platform level. This paper deals with driving simulation and in particular with the important issue of motion sickness. The paper proposes a methodology to evaluate the objective illness rating metrics deduced from the motion sickness dose value and questionnaires for both a static simulator and a dynamic simulator. Accelerations of the vestibular cues (head movements) of the subjects were recorded with and without motion platform activation. In order to compare user experiences in both cases, the head-dynamics-related illness ratings were computed from the obtained accelerations and the motion sickness dose values. For the subjective analysis, the principal component analysis method was used to determine the conflict between the subjective assessment in the static condition and that in the dynamic condition. The principal component analysis method used for the subjective evaluation showed a consistent difference between the answers given in the sickness questionnaire for the static platform case from those for the dynamic platform case. The two-tailed Mann–Whitney U test shows the significance in the differences between the self-reports to the individual questions. According to the two-tailed Mann–Whitney U test, experiencing nausea (p = 0.019 < 0.05) and dizziness (p = 0.018 < 0.05) decreased significantly from the static case to the dynamic case. Also...

Multi sensorial cues (visual, auditory, haptic, inertial, vestibular, neuromuscular) [Ang2] play important roles to represent a proper sensation (objectively) and so a perception (subjectively as cognition) in driving simulators. Driving simulator aims at giving the sensation of driving as in a real case. For a similar situation, the driver has to react in the same way as in reality in terms of ‘self motion’. To enable this behavior, the driving simulator must enhance the virtual immersion of the subject in the driving situation. The subject has to perceive the motion of his own body in the virtual scene of the virtual car as he will have in a real car. For that reason, restituting the inertial cues on driving simulators is essential to acquire a more proper functioning [Kol20]. Simulation sickness has been one of the main research topics for the driving simulators. It was assessed between dynamic and static simulators [Cur7], [Wat32]). Nos últimos anos, o ISEP em colaboração com a FEUP e outras Universidades, criou um simulador realista de condução chamado DRIS, que tem como objectivo ajudar em trabalhos de investigação de diferentes áreas, como engenharia civil, computação gráfica, psicologia, educação, etc. O resultado deste trabalho pretende ajudar os profissionais a analisarem os dados recolhidos em cada experiência de condução, a fim de permitir o estudo das reações do motorista em diferentes obstáculos durante um percurso. O simulador DRIS é constituído por uma tela branca, onde os ambientes de simulação são projetados; um carro real, onde é feita a experiência de condução e quatro câmaras colocadas no carro. Destas quatro câmaras, três estão dentro do carro e uma fora do carro. BACKGROUND—Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) has been shown to be associated with an increased risk of road traffic accidents (RTAs). Predicting the driving ability and risk of RTAs in an individual with OSA is difficult. On-road testing is the gold standard, but this is time consuming, expensive, and potentially dangerous. Simple computer based driving simulators have been developed to help determine driving ability. Although patients with OSA have been shown to perform poorly compared with matched controls, it is not known whether these simulators can predict those at most risk of accidents. In this study we evaluated whether data derived from a simple driving simulator provided information over and above that obtained from the history and a sleep study that might be useful for advising patients about driving.
METHODS—We examined 150 patients admitted for routine sleep studies for investigation of OSA and snoring. Each patient performed a 20 minute driving simulation and completed a questionnaire regarding their driving history and experience.
