For fixed cathode voltage, target current, working pressure and target-to-substrate distance, SiOx thin films were deposited at different oxygen concentrations in the Ar+O-2 plasma forming gas. After deposition processes, SiOx thin films were characterized by profilometry, energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Adhesion properties between Y-TZP and resin cement were evaluated by shear testing. Results indicate that films deposited at 20%O-2 increased the bond strength to (32.8 +/- 5.4) MPa. This value has not been achieved by traditional methods.

Methods: A total of 1,162 adults enrolled in the Faculty of Dentistry of Araraquara/UNESP participated in the study; 73.1% were women; and the mean age was 40.7 + 16.3 yr. We conducted a confirmatory factor analysis, where chi(2)/df, comparative fit index, goodness of fit index, and root mean square error of approximation were used as indices of goodness of fit. The convergent validity was judged from the average variance extracted and the composite reliability, and the internal consistency was estimated by Cronbach standardized alpha. The stability of the models was evaluated by multigroup analysis in independent samples (test and validation) and between users and nonusers of dental prosthesis. Results: We found best-fitting models for the OHIP-14 and among dental prosthesis users. The convergent validity was below adequate values for the factors functional limitation and physical pain for the complete version and for the factors functional limitation and psychological discomfort for the OHIP-14. Values of composite reliability and internal consistency were below adequate in the OHIP-14 for the factors functional limitation and psychological discomfort. We detected strong invariance between test and validation samples of the full version and weak invariance for OHIP-14. The models for users and nonusers of dental prosthesis were not invariant for both versions. Conclusion: The reduced version of the OHIP was parsimonious...

Knowing how stresses are dissipated on the fixed implant-supported complex allows adequate treatment planning and better choice of the materials used for prosthesis fabrication. Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the deformation suffered by cantilevered implant-supported fixed prostheses frameworks cast in silver-palladium alloy and coated with two occlusal veneering materials: acrylic resin or porcelain. Material and Methods: Two strain gauges were bonded to the inferior surface of the silver-palladium framework and two other were bonded to the occlusal surface of the prosthesis framework covered with ceramic and acrylic resin on each of its two halves. The framework was fixed to a metallic master model and a 35.2 N compression force was applied to the cantilever at 10, 15 and 20 mm from the most distal implant. The measurements of deformation by compression and tension were obtained. The statistical 2-way ANOVA test was used for individual analysis of the experiment variables and the Tukey test was used for the interrelation between all the variables (material and distance of force application). Results: The results showed that both variables had influence on the studied factors (deformation by compression and tension). Conclusion: The ceramic coating provided greater rigidity to the assembly and therefore less distortion compared with the uncoated framework and with the resin-coated framework. The cantilever arm length also influenced the prosthesis rigidity...

We investigated the association between poor self-rated oral appearance and the need for dental prostheses among elderly Brazilians. National data from an epidemiological survey on oral health in Brazil conducted from 2002 to 2003 by the Ministry of Health (SB, Brazil) with a multistage random sample of 4,839 individuals aged 65–74 years in 250 towns were analyzed. The dependent variable was self-rated oral appearance, dichotomized into “poor” (poor∕very poor) and “good” (fair∕good∕very good). The main independent variable was the need for an upper or lower dental prosthesis. Other variables included sociodemographic characteristics, approach to dental care, oral health conditions, and self-reported oral disadvantage. Data were analyzed using the chi-square test and Poisson regression models at a 95% significance level. The prevalence of poor self-rated oral appearance was 20.6% and was higher in the elderly who needed a partial or complete upper or lower prosthesis, independent of other variables. This prevalence was associated with age, the use of dental services, access to information about oral disease prevention, number of decayed teeth, self-perception of the need for treatment...

OBJECTIVE: The objective of the present article is to describe procedures that can be performed to achieve excellence in orthodontic treatment finishing. The content is limited to microesthetics, which comprises the concept of ideal dental dimensions and proportions (white esthetics) and its correlation with the periodontium (pink esthetics). Standards of normality are described both in their real dimensions (dental height and width), and in those effectively perceived by the observer, the virtual dimensions. METHODS: The best scientific evidence was sought in the literature to support the clinical procedures that must guide the professional to obtain maximum esthetic quality on their treatments. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate what the other specialties in Dentistry expect from Orthodontics and, specially, what they have to offer. Clinical cases will be used to illustrate the dental movement that might maximize treatment outcome and to confront the ideal standards with the current state of the art. CONCLUSION: Treatment quality is directly related to the amount of procedures implemented by the orthodontist, associated with concepts and resources from Periodontics and Dental Prosthesis. Microesthetics cannot be seen in isolation...

Dental appliances are the most common cause of accidental foreign body esophageal impaction, especially in the elderly population with decreased oral sensory perception. A 47-year-old man with history of oligophrenia and recurrent epileptic seizures was referred to our hospital following dislocation and ingestion of his upper dental prosthesis. Endoscopic removal and clipping of an esophageal tear had been unsuccessfully attempted. A chest CT scan confirmed entrapment of the dental prosthesis in the upper thoracic esophagus, the presence of pneumomediastinum, and the close proximity of one of the metal clasps of the prosthesis to the left subclavian artery. A video-assisted right thoracoscopy in the left lateral decubitus position was performed and the foreign body was successfully removed. The patient was then allowed to wear the retrieved prosthesis after dentistry consultation and repair of the wire clasps by a dental technician. At the 6-month follow-up visit the patient was doing very well without any trouble in swallowing.

For a complete comprehension of the effect of tooth loss is necessary to listen to the patients that have it. This study, of qualitative approach, investigate, in the dental history of users of SUS, listening to his/her experiences with the services of dental care, the reason that lead his/her to dental lost and the repercussion of this in his/her life. The collect of data was made by narrative interview, obeying to a pre-defined schema. The subjects interviewed were six (three of urban zone and three of rural zone), all of them were users of Family Health Units. The criterions of inclusion were the followings: the presence of tooth lost (total lost in both dental arch or in one of them, or partial lost in at least six elements in one of the arches); age between 25 and 59; male or female; to live in municipal district of São Tomé/RN or Natal/RN. Based on previous interviews was elaborated the odontological history of each patient. Such narratives, systemized in odontological history, were analyzed taking as base the studies of Souza71 and the proposal of Schutze, suggested for Jovchelovitch, Bauer34. The results show that toothache was the main reason for the search of odontological care. The patients confront the ache with home-made medicaments...

This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of use and needs of dental prosthesis at age 24 and determinants of needs of dental prosthesis in this population. The study was nested in a population-based birth cohort started in 1982 in Pelotas, Brazil. A representative sample of 720 young adults was evaluated. Dental examinations and interviews were performed at 15 and 24 years old. Use and need of prosthesis was the outcome. Exploratory variables included demographic and socioeconomic (at birth, 15 and 24 years old), oral health and dental service utilization patterns (at ages 15 and 24). Prevalence of outcomes was calculated and Poisson Regression was used to determine risk factors to needs of dental prosthesis. The prevalence of use and needs of dental prosthesis was 2.08% and 29.72%, respectively. Multivariable analysis showed that poorest family socioeconomic trajectory [PR= 1.56 IC95% (1.08-2.26)], lower mother s educational level at children birth (p=0.023), lower family income at children birth [RP= 1.37 (1.01-1.86)], no oral hygiene instruction by the dentist [RP=1.64 IC95% (1.11-2.41)] and caries presence (high DMFT tertile) (p<0,001) were associated with prosthetic treatment needs. The results of this study support the hypothesis that socieconomic...

Aim: To investigate time trends in service provision. Design: Four cross-sectional surveys across a 15-year period. Setting: Australian private general practice. Participants: A random sample of dentists. Methods: Dentists were surveyed by mailed questionnaire in 1983, 1988, 1993 and 1998 (response rates 71%-75%). Data were weighted to provide representative estimates for the age by sex distribution of private general practitioners in 1983, 1988, 1993 and 1998. Main Outcome Measures: Services per visit, annual services per dentist, annual services per patient. Results: Total services per visit increased over the study period from 1.78 to 2.14 (Poisson regression; p < 0.05). However the annual number of services provided per dentist did not vary significantly, reflecting a trend among dentists to supply fewer patient visits per year. The annual number of services provided per patient increased over the period from 3.47 to 5.22 (OLS regression; p < 0.05), reflecting both the increased service rate per visit and increased numbers of visits by patients. Dentists provided less restorative, prosthodontic and extraction services per year, but more endodontic and crown and bridge services. The pattern of annual care received per patient also included more endodontic and crown and bridge services but differed from the dentist pattern through increased service rates over the study period in areas such as restorative...

This study aimed to assess the prevalence of use and need for dental prostheses (UNDP) by individuals at age 24 and their life-course determinants. A representative sample (n = 720) of all 5914 births occurring in Pelotas in 1982 were prospectively investigated, and the UNDP were assessed in 2006. Exploratory variables included demographic and socio-economic, oral health, and dental service utilization patterns during the life-course. The prevalence of UNDP was 2.1% and 29.7%, respectively. Multivariable Poisson regression analysis showed that low socio-economic status through the life-course [Prevalence Ratio (PR) = 1.56 (95% CI: 1.08-2.26)], lower maternal schooling in childhood [PR 2.79 (1.34-5.79)], no oral hygiene instruction by a dentist at age 15 [PR 1.64 (1.11-2.41)], and caries presence at age 15 (high DMFT tertile) [PR 2.90 (1.98-4.24)] were associated with prosthetic treatment needs. These results support the hypothesis that life-course socio-economic, behavioral, and clinical determinants are associated with the need for dental prostheses.; M.B. Correa, M.A. Peres, K.G. The objective of this study was to measure the impact of edentulism and dental prostheses on quality of life (QOL) in older adults in Bogota, Colombia. Edentulism is a frequent condition in older adults and has great impact on their QOL. No epidemiological data are currently available on edentulism among older adults in Colombia. Data were obtained from the SABE-Bogota study, a cross-sectional study conducted in 2012, and used to analyze the EQ-VAS (Visual Analog Scale) from the EuroQol instrument to measure the perception of quality of life (QOL) in relation to edentulism. The study included 2,000 individuals over 60 years old. The Spearman-Rho correlation was used to analyze the correlation between EQ-VAS and edentulism. Chi-Square, ANOVA and t-test were used to study the differences in EQ-VAS scores between edentulous and healthy subjects. Statistical significance was set at p<0.05. Of the 2000 respondents, 98.3% were edentulous, 73.0% reported half or more missing teeth, 76.9% used dental prostheses and 23.7% had related eating problems.
