WOOD DENSITY VARIATION AND TREE RING DEMARCATION IN Gmelina arborea TREES USING X-RAY DENSITOMETRY

Due to its relationship with other properties, wood density is the main wood quality parameter. Modern, accurate methods - such as X-ray densitometry - are applied to determine the spatial distribution of density in wood sections and to evaluate wood quality. The objectives of this study were to determinate the influence of growing conditions on wood density variation and tree ring demarcation of gmelina trees from fast growing plantations in Costa Rica. The wood density was determined by X-ray densitometry method. Wood samples were cut from gmelina trees and were exposed to low X-rays. The radiographic films were developed and scanned using a 256 gray scale with 1000 dpi resolution and the wood density was determined by CRAD and CERD software. The results showed tree-ring boundaries were distinctly delimited in trees growing in site with rainfall lower than 25 10 mm/year. It was demonstrated that tree age, climatic conditions and management of plantation affects wood density and its variability. The specific effect of variables on wood density was quantified by for multiple regression method. It was determined that tree year explained 25.8% of the total variation of density and 19.9% were caused by climatic condition where the tree growing. This work aimed to determining the anatomical structure of wood, through methodology of histology and X-ray densitometry, of resin-tapped and not resin-tapped Pinus caribaea var. hondurensis trees samples, of three diameter classes. Pine trees, in forest plantation established in 1969, in the Ecological Experimental Station of Itirapina, from the Forestry Institute of Sao Paulo State, were measured and stratified into three classes of trunk diameter. The pine trees were resin-tapped since 2004, with the opening of two simultaneous and opposing panels. Sixty samples of pine wood trees were extracted from the tree trunk through a non-destructive method and in the laboratory. Tree rings were determined in the laboratory and wood apparent density by X-ray densitometry. The test results showed that: (i) false tree rings occur in the early wood and late wood of the tree rings due to climate change; (ii) the X-ray densitometry allowed the demarcation of the tree rings limits; (iii) the wood apparent density average was significantly different between the trees in high class diameter and in the medium-low class; (iv) the wood characteristics from the resin-tapped and non resin-tapped faces did not show significant differences.

MDF panels from eucalyptus wood fibers were manufactured in laboratory and industrial production and had their apparent density profile determined by X-ray densitometry. The MDF panels apparent density parameters (maximum density of the superior and inferior faces; medium and minimum density) were determined and compared. The results indicated that the density values of the MDF panels made in the laboratory and in industrial line did not show significant statistical differences, indicating the similarities in the pressing phase of the fibers of both kinds. However, for MDF panels of laboratory and production line, the values of maximum, mean and minimum densities showed statistically significant correlations. The determination of the density profile for MDF panels by X-ray densitometry is important for the evaluation of pressing phase and other variables of the industrial process of production, as well for the determination of the technological properties.

Non-destructive procedures are desirable for a precise internal seed morphology assessment. In this research the efficiency of X-ray densitometry for internal seed morphology analysis and physical quality of squash, melon and watermelon was evaluated. Seeds were submitted to X-ray densitometry and a typical density profile for each seed was generated. Based on the detailed densitometry profiles it was possible indicate density values for specific seed regions of the seeds and identify causes of poor germination. X-ray densitometry was considered as a promising non-destructive procedure to evaluate internal seed morphology of squash, melon and watermelon and demonstrated a strong potential for further research in seed testing.

Através da técnica de Densitometria Óptica Radiográfica consegue-se aferir o conteúdo mineral do osso com auxílio de imagens radiográficas, demonstrando ser uma metodologia precisa, confiável e de baixo custo. Procurou-se comparar os valores da densidade mineral óssea em gatos castrados precocemente - antes da puberdade - e gatos inteiros. O grupo experimental foi composto de 59 animais, separados em fêmeas e machos, castrados e inteiros. As densidades ópticas foram medidas por meio do programa de processamento de imagens ImageLab. Foram estudadas as correlações entre os valores de DMO, peso e sexo. Os gatos machos apresentaram valores de DMO e peso maiores que as fêmeas (P<0,001). Quando separados em machos castrados e inteiros e fêmeas castradas e inteiras, os gatos machos inteiros apresentaram maior valor de DMO, independentemente do peso. Entre as fêmeas não houve diferença significativa com os valores de DMO para os animais castrados e inteiros já os gatos machos castrados apresentaram valores de DMO semelhantes ao das fêmeas castradas demonstrando que com a castração precoce há uma diminuição da densidade mineral óssea. A correlação entre peso e a DMO se mostrou mais importante nos animais inteiros que nos castrados demonstrando que a interdependência entre peso e DMO varia com a ação hormonal. Foi comparada a massa óssea e a composição corporal dos hemicorpos dominante e não dominante de um grupo (A) de 16 pessoas com paralisia cerebral com hemiplegia espástica, e de um grupo (B) de 29 voluntários normais por meio da mensuração da massa corporal, estatura e densitometria óssea do corpo total com composição corporal. X-rays were initially used for the inspection of special-purpose wood pieces for quantitative evaluation properties of different species. X-ray densitometry has had its use expanded ill dendroclimatology of Picea engelmannii trees. Subsequent laboratories developed applications of X-ray densitometry for environmental, wood science and technology, and related areas. This paper describes the basic methodology of X-ray densitometry applied to the eucalypt wood analysis, as well its presenting the results of applications in three areas: (i) evaluation of wood biodegradation by white rot fungi, (ii) detection of sapwood and heartwood, and (iii) determination of the effect of management oil wood properties. The wood decayed by white rot fungi was detected by X-ray densitometry with it decreasing wood density due to the biodegradation of cell wall components. The sapwood and heartwood of eucalypts were separated in response to the attenuation of X-rays, reflected by the wood anatomical structure and chemical composition. Also, Ill eucalypt trees after the application of irrigation and i characteristic wood density profiles were detected. Ill addition, the significant potential of X-ray densitometry for eucalypt wood research and analysis is discussed.

This study was carried out at Faculdade de Medicina Veterinária e Zootecnia, Universidade Estadual Paulista, Botucatu, SP, Brazil, and evaluated bone quality in broiler breeders. Twenty-three families of Ross broiler breeders were housed in 5.0-m² pens. The families were comprised of 13 females and one male at the onset of the experimental period. The mean number of females per family was 9.34 at the end of the trial. The feeding program and management followed strain guidelines (Agroceres Ross, 2003). Bone analyses were performed in the right tibia and femur using optical radiographic densitometry at 4, 8, 12, 15, 20, 24, 30, 35, 42, 47 and 52 weeks of rearing. Trap nests were used to collect eggs from the breeders two weeks before and after the evaluation weeks. At each evaluation day, five birds were sacrificed after radiographs were taken and the tibias and femurs were collected to perform the following analyses: fatfree dry matter, ash percentage, bone resistance and Seedor index. Therefore, it was possible to establish correlations between bone quality and eggshell quality. All methods to detect experimental loss of bone present technique limitations. The sensitivities of image and histological analyses to detect the effects of teriparatide in rats with bone loss after ovariectomy were evaluated. All methods were qualitatively valid.The standardization of methods to assess bone loss after ovariectomy is crucial to establish the degree of experimental osteoporosis. In general, methods per image or histological techniques are used. To validate these two ways to determine the degree of bone loss in ovariectomized rats, we evaluated the sensitivities of bone densitometry, conventional radiography, and histological analysis of the area occupied by collagen, detecting the effects of teriparatide treatment in the femur of ovariectomized rats with bone loss.Wistar rats were divided into three groups: a control group, in which the animals were only subjected to laparotomy; an ovariectomized group, in which bilateral removal of the ovaries was performed; and an ovariectomized + teriparatide group, in which bilateral removal of the ovaries was performed, and the animals were treated with 3 mu g/100 g/day of teriparatide. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effect of 17ß-estradiol or alendronate in preventing bone loss in 3-month-old ovariectomized Wistar rats. One group underwent sham ovariectomy (control, N = 10), and the remaining three underwent double ovariectomy. One ovariectomized group did not receive any treatment (OVX, N = 12). A second received subcutaneous 17ß-estradiol at a dose of 30 µg/kg for 6 weeks (OVX-E, N = 11) and a third, subcutaneous alendronate at a dose of 0.1 mg/kg for 6 weeks (OVX-A, N = 8). Histomorphometry, densitometry, osteocalcin and deoxypyridinoline measurements were applied to all groups. After 6 weeks there was a significant decrease in bone mineral density (BMD) at the trabecular site (distal femur) in OVX rats. Both alendronate and 17ß-estradiol increased the BMD of ovariectomized rats, with the BMD of the OVX-A group being higher than that of the OVX-E group. Histomorphometry of the distal femur showed a decrease in trabecular volume in the untreated group (OVX), and an increase in the two treated groups, principally in the alendronate group. In OVX-A there was a greater increase in trabecular number. An increase in trabecular thickness, however, was seen only in the OVX-E group. CONTEXT AND OBJECTIVE: Identification of women at risk of bone fracture is becoming less dependent on evaluating bone mineral density through placing greater value on clinical risk factors. The aim of this study was to evaluate the sensitivity of the Osteorisk clinical tool for identifying Brazilian postmenopausal women with osteoporosis, compared with bone densitometry. DESIGN AND SETTING: Cross-sectional observational study at Faculdade de Medicina do ABC. METHOD: Information on 812 postmenopausal osteoporotic women was retrospectively evaluated from medical records. The women were divided into the age groups 50-59, 60-69, 70-79 and over 80 years. The results from the Osteorisk clinical tool, which uses only age and weight, were compared with bone densitometry T-scores. RESULTS: There were significant correlations between the results from the Osteorisk clinical tool and from bone densitometry, in relation to the lumbar spine (P = 0.027) and hip (P < 0.001), thus showing a non-arbitrary relationship. The overall sensitivity of Osteorisk for identifying women with "high risk of osteoporosis" was 86.5%, and it was higher for hip osteoporosis alone (97.2%) than for lumbar spine osteoporosis (85.8%). The sensitivity was better among older women. CONCLUSION: Osteorisk seems to present good sensitivity for identifying postmenopausal women at risk of osteoporosis. It should be used when bone densitometry is not easily available or as a means of selecting individuals for referral for bone densitometry.

To measure the void fraction distribution in gas-liquid flows, a two-dimensional x-ray densitometry system was developed. This system is capable of acquiring a two-dimensional projection with a 225 cm2 area of measurement through 21 cm of water. The images can be acquired at rates on the order of 1 kHz. Common sources of error in x-ray imaging, such as x-ray scatter, image distortion, veiling glare, and beam hardening were considered, and mitigated. The measured average void fraction was compared success fully to that of a phantom target and found to be within 1%. To evaluate the performance of the new system, the flow in and downstream of a ventilated nominally two-dimensional partial cavity was investigated and compared to measurements from dual tip fiber optical probes and high speed video. O risco de fratura osteoporótica pode ser avaliado clinicamente baseado em fatores clínicos e pela densidade mineral óssea (DMO), entretanto esses parâmetros não são bons preditores do risco de fratura. Recentemente, o Brasil foi incluído no instrumento fracture risk assessment tool- FRAX-BRASIL, porém seu uso tem sido limitado na prática clínica. OBJETIVO: Avaliar o grau de concordância entre o risco de fratura em 10 anos calculado pelo FRAX-BRASIL com e sem densitometria em mulheres brasileiras na pós-menopausa. MÉTODO: Realizou-se um estudo de corte transversal no período de novembro de 2014 a fevereiro de 2015, com 402 mulheres em acompanhamento no Ambulatório de Menopausa do Hospital da Mulher Prof. Dr. José Aristodemo Pinotti em Campinas-SP. Foram incluídas mulheres com 40 anos ou mais, em amenorreia há pelo menos 12 meses e com exame de densitometria óssea prévio a qualquer tratamento medicamentoso para osteopenia ou osteoporose. As mulheres foram entrevistadas por um pesquisador durante a consulta de rotina, na qual foram coletadas informações sobre fatores de risco necessários para o questionário FRAX-BRASIL e dados da densitometria óssea. OBJECTIVES: To longitudinally assess bone mineral content (BMC), bone mineral density (BMD), and whole-body lean mass obtained through bone densitometry by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) in preterm newborns (PTNs) and compare them with full-term newborns (FTNs) from birth to 6 months of corrected postnatal age. METHODS: A total of 28 adequate for gestational age (AGA) newborns were studied: 14 preterm and 14 full-term newborns. DXA was used to determine BMC, BMD, and lean mass in three moments: 40 weeks corrected post-conceptual age, as well as 3 and 6 months of corrected postnatal age. PTNs had gestational age ≤ 32 weeks at birth and were fed their mother's own milk or milk from the human milk bank. RESULTS: All infants had an increase in BMC, BMD, and lean body mass values during the study. PTNs had lower BMC, BMD, and lean mass at 40 weeks of corrected post-conceptual age in relation to FTNs (p < 0.001, p < 0.001, p = 0.047, respectively). However, there was an acceleration in the mineralization process of PTNs, which was sufficient to achieve the normal values of FTNs at 6 months of corrected age. OBJECTIVE--To assess doctors' and patients' views about a district general hospital bone densitometry service and to examine existing practice to influence future provision. DESIGN--Three postal surveys: (a) of doctors potentially using the service, (b) of patients undergoing a bone densitometry test during a six month period, and (c) of the referring doctors of the patients undergoing the test. SUBJECTS--All general practitioners (n=201) and hospital consultants in general medicine, rheumatology, obstetrics and gynaecology, orthopaedics, radio therapy and oncology, haematology, and radiology (n=61); all patients undergoing an initial bone densitometry test (n=309) during a six month period; and their referring doctors. MAIN MEASURES--Service awareness and use, knowledge of clinical indications, test results, influence of test results on patient management, satisfaction with the service and its future provision. A Densitometria Óptica Radiográfica é um método de análise para quantificação da matéria mineral óssea, sendo, neste estudo, realizado com radiografias simples da tíbia direita ao lado de escala de alumínio. Foram utilizados 5 cães da raça Golden Retriever, que foram radiografados mensalmente, dos 3 aos 9 meses de idade. Estas radiografias foram digitalizadas e analisadas por meio de um software de análise de imagens (ImageLab, Softium®) que compara as tonalidades de cinza da escala com região óssea analisada, obtendo-se valores em milímetros de alumínio (mmAl). O estudo revelou que a região epifisária possui maior densidade mineral óssea (DMO), seguida pela região metafisária e diafisária, respectivamente, ao longo do período experimental, e seguiram o comportamento do peso corpóreo. Houve uma tendência de aumento da DMO nas três regiões avaliadas. A região metafisária proximal de tíbia demonstrou ser a região de eleição para a leitura da DMO em cães em crescimento por ser o local estudado com menor correlação com o peso corpóreo, possibilitando uma maior influência de outros fatores na regulação da DMO, como alguma alteração que promova osteopenia, gerando um diagnóstico mais precoce.; Radiographic Optical Densitometry is an analitic method to meansure bone mineral content. A Densitometria Óptica Radiográfica permite aferir o conteúdo mineral do osso por meio de imagens radiográficas, contribuindo para o diagnóstico de osteopenia, monitoração seriada da densidade em resposta a enfermidades ósseas, a intervenções cirúrgicas e de terapia, e a estratégias preventivas relacionadas ao metabolismo ósseo. As densidades ópticas foram medidas por meio do software de processamento de imagens ImageLab, cuja aplicabilidade foi testada para determinação de valores de referência de DMO, comparando-os a uma escala padrão confeccionada em alumínio, radiografada junto ao osso. Correlacionou-se os valores de DMO com as variáveis peso, idade, sexo e largura e espessura do terço distal do rádio-ulna direito de 112 cães Poodle. Pela diferença na proporção de osso esponjoso e compacto entre as regiões metafisária e diafisária, os animais apresentaram a DMO da metáfise menor que a da diáfise, fato não observado no grupo de animais de até um ano de idade, devido ao alto metabolismo ósseo na região metafisária durante o período de crescimento. A densitometric technique is described which yields analytical dye densities from a negative- positive color print film in a time less than would normally be required to process the film. In this technique, a correlation is established between the dye density produced by the complete process and the silver density produced by the initial development, the latter being determined by an application of infrared densitometry. Equipment utilized and procedure followed are described and some theoretical aspects and limitations reviewed.

; The present study investigated the reduction on bone density 4 weeks after ovariectomy in rats, with conventional X-ray densitometry. Eighty female Wistar rats underwent bilateral ovariectomy (OVX group) or sham operation (sham group) under general anesthesia. Animals were killed by cervical dislocation 4 weeks after surgery. The left tibia of each animal was dissected and radiographed using oclusal films. Radiographs were scanned and virtual squares on the proximal tibial metaphysis were analyzed with proper software. Higher OD values represent darker areas in the X-ray. After that the tibia were decalcified with EDTA and serial transversal sections with 6 µm of the mesial root of the first mandibular molar were stained with hematoxylin-eosin. Digital images were captured and the densitometric volume of bone was evaluated using software. A significant increase of dark areas in the radiographies of OVX animals was observed when compared with control group (control=1.136±0.020 vs OVX=1.269±0.027, t test, p=0.01). Histomorphometric analysis showed a significant reduction on bone density of OVX animals (control=125.8±20.5 vs OVX=65.4±0.0154, t test, p=0.01).
