Each plasma physics laboratory has a proprietary scheme to control and data acquisition system. Usually, it is different from one laboratory to another. It means that each laboratory has its own way to control the experiment and retrieving data from the database. Fusion research relies to a great extent on international collaboration and this private system makes it difficult to follow the work remotely. The TCABR data analysis and acquisition system has been upgraded to support a joint research programme using remote participation technologies. The choice of MDSplus (Model Driven System plus) is proved by the fact that it is widely utilized, and the scientists from different institutions may use the same system in different experiments in different tokamaks without the need to know how each system treats its acquisition system and data analysis. Another important point is the fact that the MDSplus has a library system that allows communication between different types of language (JAVA, Fortran, C, C++, Python) and programs such as MATLAB, IDL, OCTAVE. In the case of tokamak TCABR interfaces (object of this paper) between the system already in use and MDSplus were developed, instead of using the MDSplus at all stages, from the control...

This system is based in an IBM-PC type host computer, with ISA bus 16 bits wide. The system has two modules - acquisition and processing. The acquisition module works at 200 KHz sample rate, with 12 bits of resolution, and also works without host control, due to its own memory system and control logic. The processing module uses a ZORAN ZR34161 vector signal processor...

The electric motors’ test benches are greatly used by electric motors manufacturers and drive system designers. In this paper it is described the conversion process of an older manually controlled test bench, in an automatic digitally controlled one with integrated data acquisition system. The renewed test bench is based in a two quadrant eddy current electromagnetic brake, in which the manual torque controller and analog indicator have been replaced by an automatic digital controller, by which is possible to predefine a torque profile for the test. With the data acquisition system it is possible the acquisition and recording of speed, torque and internal temperature on the brake. Special focus is given to the power converter used to control the current in the electromagnetic brake and to the torque data acquisition system, namely, the calibration of the load cell.; FEDER Funds - Operational Programme for Competitiveness Factors (COMPETE); Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT) - PTDC/EEA-EEL/104569/2008, MIT-PT/EDAM-SMS/0030/2008.

Soil working operations in conventional farming systems involving the use of tractors are some of the operations which incur the highest energy costs. Sustainability of such systems requires strictly-controlled management of resources which can lead to a significant reduction in crop-production costs, derived from savings in fuel consumption. A novel data acquisition system has been successfully integrated on-board the Massey Ferguson 3000 series agricultural tractors for measuring tractor-implement performance. A commercial load cell was incorporated into the existing system for the needed tractor-implement performance measurements. This system is capable of measuring, displaying and recording, in real-time, the tractor’s theoretical travel speed, the actual travel speed, the engine speed, the fuel consumption rate, and the drawbar pull. Static calibration tests on various associated sensors for the required measurements show excellent linearity with correlation coefficients that are close to 1. The developed system has been extensively and successfully field demonstrated for tractor-implement performance with offset disc harrows on dry, undisturbed loamy soils. Under these conditions, a ratio of tractor power to implement width is suggested. The data also show the existence of a linear relationship between fuel consumption per hectare and specific draught...

A fully implantable neural data acquisition system is a key component of a clinically viable brain-machine interface. This type of system must communicate with the outside world and obtain power without the use of wires that cross through the skin. We present a 96-channel fully implantable neural data acquisition system. This system performs spike detection and extraction within the body and wirelessly transmits data to an external unit. Power is supplied wirelessly through the use of inductively-coupled coils. The system was implanted acutely in sheep and successfully recorded, processed, and transmitted neural data. Bidirectional communication between the implanted system and an external unit was successful over a range of 2 m. The system is also shown to integrate well into a brain-machine interface. This demonstration of a high channel-count fully implanted neural data acquisition system is a critical step in the development of a clinically viable brain-machine interface.

peer-reviewed; This paper presents an overview of simulated and custom models for a wireless data acquisition system. The output signalfrom the transmitter was encoded to digital signal based on one of the Pulse Coding Modulation (PCM) algorithms. At the receiver end, the signal is demodulated and processed to extract the spectrum of the original analogue signal which is subsequently converted to voltage primarily for position tracking purposes. We used a path loss scenario based on the lognormal model to investigate the relationship between signal power transmitted, distance between transmitter and receiver, and the bit error rate generated in the channel. The performance of the radio frequency (RF) unit through additive White Gaussian Noise (A WGN) channel was examined by estimating the average Bit Error Rate (BER). The effect of the multipath fading was also considered in the receiver model. The receiver was modeled to receive from an omnidirectional transmitter which is transmitting RF signals at 433MHz, Input power 1 W, and Es/No = 20dB (corresponding to the linear region ofthe target transceiver).; EI

peer-reviewed; This paper presents a novel simulated model for a wireless data acquisition system. The system will read analogue information provided by two sensors and can be used for medical purposes. Real data has been obtained and a simulation of the two signals coming from both pH and pressure sensors embedded in the system has been employed. The created model contains four main units simulated using SIMULINK. At the first unit, the output signal is encoded to digital signal based on adapting one of the Pulse Coding Modulation (PCM) algorithms. The second unit simulates the processor function that is responsible for framing, mixing and compressing the incoming hit streams from both sensors. The third unit, where the digital data is modulated and sent through different noisy channels, represents an efficient FSK transmittertreceiver model. At the receiver end, the signal is demodulated and processed inversely to extract the original analogue signal read by the two sensors. In this work, the performance of the systems using different PCM methods will be studied comparatively in order to control the transmission and reduce the amount of data sent. This leads to a significant reduction in power consumption. In addition, efficiency of the RF channel in terms of Bit Error Rate (BER) and through different noisy conditions is investigated.; EI; IRCSET

Approved for public release, distribution is unlimited; For over half a century the NPS Aerolabʼ Low Speed Wind Tunnel located in Halligan Hall of the Naval Postgraduate school has served to provide students and faculty with meaningful aerodynamic data for research and problem analysis. New data acquisition hardware was installed three years ago but never fully verified, and contained no integrated software program to collect data from the strain-gauge balance pedestal. Existing National Instruments based hardware for the NPS low-speed wind tunnel was reconfigured to obtain data from the strain-gauge pedestal. Additionally, a data acquisition software program was written in LabVIEW⠭ to accommodate the hardware. The Virtual Instruments (VI) program collects and plots accurate data from all four strain gauges in real-time, producing non-dimensional force and moment coefficients. A research study on the performance of an OH-6A helicopter fuselage was conducted. NPS Aerolabʼ wind tunnel tests consisted of drag, lift, and pitching moment measurements of the OH-6A along yaw and angle-of-attack sweeps. The results of the NPS wind tunnel data were compared against testing conducted on a full-scale OH-6A helicopter in NASA Ames' 40 ft. x 80ft. wind tunnel...

SiPLAB Report 03/05, FCT, University of Algarve,2005.; In the framework of the ATOMS project, a project devoted to study uppwelling processes off the S. Vicente Cape, Portugal, by oceanographic and acoustic means, it was requested to adapt an existent underwater acoustic acquisition system named Ultra Light Vertical Array (ULVA) to fulfil the project requirements. The ULVA system was a vertical instrumented with up to 16 hydrophones and various non-acoustic sensors (thermistors, tiltmeters and pressure gauges). The ULVA system was used during the INTIFANTE project sea trial, where the acquired data were transmitted through a radio link to a remote PC station located in a vessel for storage, monitoring and online processing. In order to overcome data loses due to radio link fails, identified during the INTIFANTE sea trial, and improve the mobility of the vessel where the PC station is located, a must for the ATOMS project, it was decided to transform the ULVA system into an autonomous acquisition system with local storage facilities, lower power consumption, capability of on line remote quality control of the acquired data and positioning information. The first version of this new system, named Ultra Light Vertical Array/Remote Data Acquisition System (ULVA/RDAS)...

Pachmarhi Array of \v Cerenkov Telescopes (PACT) consists of a 5$\times$5 array of \v Cerenkov telescopes deployed over an area of 100 $m$ $\times$ 80 $m$, in the form of a rectangular matrix. The experiment is based on atmospheric \v Cerenkov technique using wavefront sampling technique. Each telescope consists of 7 parabolic mirrors mounted para-axially on an equatorial mount. At the focus of each mirror a fast phototube is mounted. In this experiment a large number of parameters have to be measured and recorded from each of the 175 phototubes in the shortest possible time. Further, the counting rates from each phototube as well as the analog sum of the 7 phototubes from each telescope (royal sum) need to be monitored at regular intervals during the run. In view of the complexity of the system, the entire array is divided into four smaller sectors each of which is handled by an independent field signal processing centre (FSPC) housed in a control room that collects, processes and records information from nearby six telescopes that belong to that sector. The distributed data acquisition system (DDAS) developed for the purpose consists of stand-alone sector data acquisition system (SDAS) in each of the four FSPC's and a master data acquisition system (MDAS). MDAS running in the master signal processing centre (MSPC) records data from each of the 25 telescopes. The data acquisition and monitoring PCs (SDAS and MDAS) are networked through LAN. The entire real time software for DDAS is developed in C under $linux$ environment. Most of the hardware in DDAS are designed and fabricated in-house. The design features and the performance of the entire system along with some other auxiliary systems to facilitate the entire observations will be presented.; Comment: 4 pages...

The LIGO Control and Data system (CDS) features a tightly coupled and highly integrated control and data acquisition system. Control of the interferometers requires many Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) control loops closed both locally and across the 4-kilometer interferometer arm lengths. In addition to providing the closed loop control, the control systems front end processors act as Data Collection Units (DCU) for the data acquisition system. Data collected by these front ends and the data acquisition system must be collected and time stamped to an accuracy of 1 microsecond and made available to on-line analysis tools such as the Global Diagnostics System (GDS)[1]. Data is also sent to the LIGO Data Analysis System (LDAS)[2] for long-term storage and off-line analysis. Data rates exceed 5 Mbytes per second per interferometer continuous. Connection between the various front end processors and the data acquisition system is achieved using fiber optic reflective memory networks. Both controls and data acquisition systems use VME hardware and VxWorks operating systems. This paper will present an overview of the LIGO CDS and discuss key aspects of its design.; Comment: 5 pages

The data acquisition system of the Antares neutrino telescope is based on the unique "all-data-to-shore" concept. In this, all signals from the photo-multiplier tubes are digitised, and all digital data are sent to shore where they are processed in real time by a PC farm. This data acquisition system showed excellent stability and flexibility since the detector became operational in March 2006. The applied concept enables to operate different physics triggers to the same data in parallel, each optimized for a specific (astro)physics signal. The list of triggers includes two general purpose muon triggers, a Galactic Centre trigger, and a gamma-ray burst trigger. The performance of the data acquisition system is evaluated by its operational efficiency and the data filter capabilities. In addition, the efficiencies of the different physics triggers are quantified.; Comment: Proceedings of 31st ICRC conference, Lodz 2009, 3 pages, 1 figure

Cortical brain-machine interface (BMI) systems as they currently exist within the research environment are not suitable for general clinical use. A clinical system must be fully implantable, requiring no chronic breaks in the skin. This work addresses the communication and processing needs of a fully implantable neural data acquisition system. Such a system is a key component of a clinically viable BMI. This work primarily focuses on the design, implementation, and testing of a data reduction scheme for 96 channels of neural data and a bidirectional telemetry link for sending data out of the body and providing commands and configuration information to the implanted portion of the system.

The data reduction scheme and an interface to a one megabit per second commercial transceiver were implemented in a single programmable logic device. The data reduction scheme makes use of a voltage thresholding spike detection technique. The threshold for each channel is computed automatically based on a user-defined multiplier and an estimate of the noise level. The interface to the transceiver performs all necessary serial encoding and decoding, queuing, and packet assembly and disassembly.

The data reduction portion of the system was tested using simulated neural signals. Spike detection performance was evaluated using thirty different multiplier values over a wide range of signal-to-noise ratios. Spike extraction tests showed that the system could output up to 2000 extracted spikes per second with latencies suitable for a BMI application. The circumstances under which some spikes would not be transmitted by the system were also characterized. Finally...
