Analysis of the National Education Longitudinal Study revealed that socioeconomically advantaged students persist in high school math at higher rates than their disadvantaged peers, even when they have the same initial placements and skill levels. These disparities are larger among students with prior records of low academic status because students from more privileged backgrounds persist in math coursework even when their prior performance predicts they will not. Among students with low middle school math performance, those from socioeconomically disadvantaged families appear to benefit from having consultants for coursework decisions, so that they make up ground with their socioeconomically advantaged peers.

Service-learning is a type of experiential teaching and learning strategy combining classroom instruction and meaningful community service and guided activities for reflection. This educational approach has been used frequently in higher education settings, including an array of disciplines such as medicine, theology, public health, physical education, nutrition, psychology, anthropology, and sociology. The purpose of the present review paper was to provide guidance on the use of service-learning within higher education, relevant to the preventive medicine and public health topics of healthful eating, physical activity, and obesity prevention. In service-learning, coursework is structured to address community needs, and to benefit students through the real-world application of knowledge. The benefits for students include positive impacts on social skills, empathy, awareness, understanding, and concern regarding community issues, plus greater confidence and skills to work with diverse populations, increased awareness of community resources, improved motivation, and enhanced knowledge. Educational institutions may also benefit through improved “town and gown” relations, as strong ties, partnerships, and mutually beneficial activities take place. The present literature review describes several service-learning applications such as nutrition education for kids...

There is currently no evidence describing what characteristics make an Athletic Training Program Director (PD) an effective leader. An influx of accredited programs resulted in a rapid increase in the demand for PDs, yet training and preparation for these positions has failed to evolve. Although Certified Athletic Trainers (ATs) are trained in specific content areas, they may not always be prepared for the administrative and leadership responsibilities associated with the role of PD (Leone, 2008). This dissertation examined the relationships between selected characteristics and leadership outcomes of Athletic Training Program Directors. Each PD participants (n=27) completed a demographic questionnaire to obtain the leader’s academic preparation, accreditation experience and leadership training history. Each participant also completed the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ) to obtain leadership styles, behaviors, and outcomes. Overall, the PDs reported utilizing transformational leadership most often and passive avoidant leadership least often. There was no significant difference between PDs with master’s and doctorate degrees on overall leadership outcome. However, participants with a doctorate degree scored significantly different on the effectiveness component of the leadership outcome compared with participants with a master’s degree. Those participants who have completed academic coursework on leadership scored significantly different on the leadership outcome compared to those who have not completed academic coursework on leadership. Findings from this study indicate that changes to the current requirements for the role of PD may be warranted. Consideration should be given to increasing the minimum degree requirement and requiring academic coursework on leadership. Future research may be useful in determining specific degree guidelines and types and amounts of leadership training that would be beneficial to Athletic Training PDs.

This paper explores the critical success factors which have combined to create a program which has attracted nearly 26,000 staff and students to over 2300 workshops, seminars, lectures and demonstrations in the last two years. The basic success ingredients involve a strategic mix of substantial funding, effective marketing techniques, the nurturing of critical and occasionally unlikely partnerships and the support of key University policy making bodies. The most critical element, however, has been the talented and experienced human resources gathered together to determine how such a commonly misunderstood and widely interpreted concept as “information literacy” could be delivered equitably across the campus. The combination of these success factors has engendered a “can do” response to opportunities sought and offered during the last 2 years to build information literacy into the curriculum at the Australian National University. The program has been embraced enthusiastically by the academic community who have used the program resources extensively to embed information literacy into their coursework.; no

International graduate students enrolled in coursework degrees are under enormous pressure from the moment they come on course. They usually have only 1-2 years to complete their courses. There is greater pressure on their language skills in the context of reading and writing. They often have gaps in their knowledge and the higher levels of theoretical, philosophical or methodological content in their readings can be particularly difficult for them. There are also other pressures. Time constraints do not permit the more leisurely acquisition of new learning strategies allowed research students. This paper discusses the particular difficulties encountered by coursework students and their urgent need of help. It also examines the different contexts in which they can be helped and proposes methods for assisting them in those contexts.; no

Across Australian and other Western universities, engineering schools routinely offer a capstone project at the end of their undergraduate degree programs. From a learning perspective, the capstone project represents an opportunity to apply and synthesise new knowledge from previous coursework. One of the key learning outcomes of the project at our university is to impart significant and demonstrable research skills to the students, as consistent with Honours level expectations. However, it was apparent that the project assessment framework in use until 2009 did not allow the explicit development and effective measurement of research skills. Based on positive experiences from a trial on the use of the Research Skill Development (RSD) Framework (Willison and O’Regan 2007) in a Masters coursework component in 2006, our School chose to base the re-design of the Honours project assessment scheme on the RSD in 2010. The key to the new scheme is to explicitly inform candidates about the range of research skills that are needed to perform their research effectively, and provide quality feedback on how these candidates are performing. The scheme informs objective diagnostic and summative assessment of individual candidate’s work and of the work done by teams. This presentation gives an overview of how the RSD was adopted and deployed in the capstone...

Postgraduate coursework students, in particular those in conversion programs, occasionally take courses that are in some way delivered in parallel with an associated undergraduate course. There are of course concerns about the impact of this practice of ‘parallel teaching’ on the quality of the student experience. A survey was conducted to explore the expectations, experience and views of postgraduate coursework students regarding parallel teaching in a particular context. The survey context was postgraduate coursework students enrolled in introductory level postgraduate courses taught in conjunction with large undergraduate economics course. The results are generally encouraging about the practice, but highlight some issues with which the students are concerned. Although responses are diverse, some trends include students desiring more differentiation of content rather than assessment, and students not expecting parallel teaching prior to course or degree commencement.; Mark C. Science study prepares a student for a lifetime of critical thinking and promotes a drive to find evidence and develop an understanding of how our society fits into the broader picture of the world. These skills help the students for employment not only in the research sector but also the broader economy. Scientific thinking promotes innovative inquiry, which is now the central to the creation of more innovative and efficient business models and industries. This report accesses the recent ten years data to investigate the enrollment behavior for commencing postgraduate from nationality, broad level of course and narrow disciplines. The employment behavior, salary outcomes and job search behavior in terms seven N&PS disciplines: Computer Science, Life Science, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physical Science, Geology and Veterinary Science for domestic postgraduates are analyzed based on the Graduate Destination Survey. The purpose of this report is to provide valuable insights for workforce researchers and graduates. The findings will assist prospective postgraduates to make course and career decisions and career advisors integrate the results into theirs counseling studies. Key findings: A growth in enrollments in domestic and international commencing N&PS postgraduate is shown for recent 8 years where the ratio of international postgraduates over domestic postgraduates also present an overall up-ward trend and remains at about 65 per cent. Doctorate by coursework/Research is more popular among the overseas students whereas domestic postgraduates have higher preference in master's course and research. All pattern of N&PS narrow disciplines showed growth in publication outputs during the past decade while counting as the student load (EFTSL). Biological Science retains highest percentage in student load among the narrow science discipline for all commencing postgraduate (coursework) students enrolled in N&PS...

The focus of this paper is on student learning pathways – with particular reference to the factors motivating coursework master's students to seek entry to a doctoral programme – along with the implications for higher education policy and practice. It is argued nationally and internationally that although a number of challenges continue to confront those with responsibility for teaching and supervising coursework master's students, there are opportunities for renewal especially in terms of the provision of enhanced student support. Located within an international context of postgraduate education, a case study from Australia is provided to highlight the need for more flexible doctoral pathways at a time when calls for revitalised and expanded research workforces are intensifying.; Support for this research has been provided by the Australian Learning and Teaching Council Ltd, an initiative of the Australian Government Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations.

In response to a proposal from the Dean of the Graduate School the Vice-Chancellor in June 1996 provided an allocation from the University's Strategic Initiatives Fund for a Review of Graduate Coursework Degrees. In September the Dean proposed the following terms of reference: To review graduate coursework degrees and diplomas within the ANU and comparator universities, in particular: 1. To identify examples of good practice. 2. To determine the extent of undergraduate content in such awards, and to assess the desirability or otherwise of such content. 3. To report on the extent to which graduate coursework is targeted to particular professional groups. 4. To recommend areas in which the ANU should develop new courses, particularly having regard to the implications of the recent federal budget. 5. To consider how the ANU's offerings might be rationalised, eg by reducing the proliferation of named awards. 6. To consider ways in which the ANU's graduate coursework offerings might be made more attractive to international students. The Graduate Degrees Committee, at its meeting of 5 December 1996, referred to the Review an additional term of reference: 7. To examine explicitly the relationship of graduate diplomas to honours degrees and to the possible introduction of professional Master degrees as outlined in Professor Poole's memorandum of 25 November 1996 on re-naming of graduate diplomas.; no

The purpose of this study was to explore the impact of the Florida State-mandated Basic Skills Exit Tests (BSET) on the effectiveness of remedial instruction programs to adequately serve the academically underprepared student population. The primary research question concerned whether the introduction of the BSET has resulted in remedial completers who are better prepared for college-level coursework. ^ This study consisted of an ex post facto research design to examine the impact of the BSET on student readiness for subsequent college-level coursework at Miami-Dade Community College. Two way analysis of variance was used to compare the performance of remedial and college-ready students before and after the introduction of the BSET requirement. Chi-square analysis was used to explore changes in the proportion of students completing and passing remedial courses. Finally, correlation analysis was used to explore the utility of the BSET in predicting subsequent college-level course performance. Differences based on subject area and race/ethnicity were explored. ^ The introduction of the BSET did not improve the performance of remedial completers in subsequent college-level courses in any of the subject areas. The BSET did have a negative impact on the success rate of students in remedial reading and mathematics courses. There was a significant decrease in minority students' likelihood of passing remedial reading and mathematics courses after the BSET was introduced. The reliability of the BSET is unacceptably low for all subject areas...

We focus on the plagiarism in student submissions in programming courses...

Labor economists know that a year of schooling raises earnings but have little evidence on the impact of specific courses completed. I identify the impact of math coursework on earnings using the differential timing of state-level increases in high school graduation requirements as a source of exogenous variation. The increased requirements induced large increases in both the completed math coursework and earnings of blacks, particularly black males. Two-sample instrumental variable estimates suggest that each additional year of math raised blacks' earnings by 5-9%, accounting for a large fraction of the value of a year of schooling. Closer analysis suggests that much of this effect comes from black students who attend non-white schools and who will not attend college. The earnings impact of additional math coursework is robust to changes in empirical specification, is not driven by selection into the labor force, and persists when earnings are conditioned on educational attainment. The reforms close one fifth of the earnings gap between black and white males. Estimates for whites are similar to those of blacks but are much noisier due to the reforms' weaker impact on white students' coursework. These results suggest that math coursework is an important determinant of the labor market return to schooling...

Rendered animations are a significant part of many student and research projects being done at Indiana University. Typically the rendering process is very computationally intensive, but it is allocated minimal computing resources. By creating a Condor pool out of all student computing labs we have created a large scale, homogeneous grid resource dedicated to the single purpose of rendering. By implementing a web portal based interface to submit and monitor rendering jobs the rendering system becomes independent of the end users architecture, OS, and even rendering package being used. This allows for a “learn once, run often” architecture despite the highly complex distributed computational backend. The web interface allows users to submit jobs with the needed parameters, monitor the progress of the job, and display finished frames of the animation. When the job finishes the render system notifies the user and will present a web based preview of the final movie, allowing the user to quickly assess the quality of the rendered results. The modular nature of the render system allows for easy upgrade and additions to the rendering packages offered. New rendering packages can typically be added within 24 hrs, without any changes to the user interface or workflow.; "Creating grid resources for use in undergraduate coursework...
