The recent explosion of popular protest in China, often framed as a demand for the fulfillment of “rights,” has captured widespread attention. Some observers interpret the protests as signs of a “moral vacuum.” Others see the unrest as signaling a powerful new “rights consciousness.” In either case, the protests are often regarded as a major challenge to the stability of the political system. In this article, an examination of Chinese conceptions of “rights,” as reflected in the ethical discourses of philosophers, political leaders and protesters (and as contrasted with American understandings of rights), provides the basis for questioning prevailing assumptions about the fragility of the Chinese political order. For over two millennia, Chinese political thought, policy, and protest have assigned central priority to the attainment of socioeconomic security. As a result, the meaning of “rights” in Chinese political discourse differs significantly from the Anglo-American tradition. Viewed in historical context, China’s contemporary “rights” protests seem far less politically threatening. The Chinese polity appears neither as vacuous nor as vulnerable as it is sometimes assumed to be.; Government

This study introduces and examines the thought of Mou Zongsan 牟宗三 (1909-1995), generally recognised as the most creative and systematic Xin Rujia 新儒家 (New Confucian) thinker. Because very little about his thought has been written in English, this study contributes to the understanding and interpretation of Chinese thought by filling a gap in Western scholarship on a key twentieth-century Ru thinker. The study accomplishes four objectives. The first objective is to examine the making of Mou’s thought by tracing the various influences that shaped his philosophical thinking. Mou’s thought is multi-faceted and complex. It reflects the historical time he lived in, the person he was, and the many ideological and intellectual influences that shaped his thinking. Scholars usually regard Mou’s thought as a contemporary moral metaphysical reading of Ru thought based on the Lu-Wang Learning of the Mind, the stream of Song-Ming Ruxue (Neo-Confucianism) associated with Lu Xiangshan 陸象山 (1139-1193) and Wang Yangming 王陽明 (1472-1529). Yet, as this thesis shows, Mou’s thought is also cultural nationalist, anti-Communist, moral idealistic, Hegelian, and Kantian. The second objective of this thesis is to introduce Mou’s thought as a contemporary reading of Ruxue—in the form of a moral metaphysics based on the Lu-Wang Learning of the Mind. Mou’s moral metaphysics reflects his understanding of the human mind as informed by the teachings of Mengzi 孟子 (Mencius) (ca 372-289 B.C.)...

This submission realizes the project Silent Film Music Composition in a Cross-Cultural Context through the composition of music for an excerpt from the silent film “Peach Blossom Weeps Tears of Blood” (Shanghai, 1931). The portfolio consists of a DVD of a 58-minute segment of the film with the newly composed soundtrack. Accompanying it is an exegesis addressing the research questions for this project and outlining the process of composition. The combination of Chinese and Western musical materials in the soundtrack was a major focus of the composition. The music is also designed to explain the rich historical background of the film and is intended to help contemporary audiences, who come from different cultures and age groups, to understand the emotions that are depicted on-screen. The entire score was created on the computer using Logic 9 software. All the instruments used are from the sound library of Logic and the final soundtrack in DVD format has been mastered using Logic. The accompanying exegesis explains the aims of this research and the questions that are to be answered. Research began with investigation into early film music, paying particular attention to Chinese silent films. Several significant reasons are listed for the choice of a Chinese silent film. In order to give a general idea of the development of the Chinese film industry...

Major curated national exhibition displayed across two venues, The National Portrait Gallery of Australia, Canberra and the Sherman Contemporary Art Foundation, Sydney. The exhibition drew on the largest single collection of experimental Chinese art, then based in Switzerland. The concept for the exhibition and development of the exhibition was based on substantial research and field work. Go Figure ! was the first exhibition to adopt a thematic focus of the portrait or figure as a way of examining the significance of contemporary artistic practice in China over the past thirty years, a period of dramatic socio-economic change. Key works of the period were displayed in new, thought provoking contexts, allowing for the creation of new knowledge and insights. The exhibition received a large amount of publicity and excellent reviews in local, national and international newspapers and journals. The curator was chosen to speak about the exhibition as an outstanding example of transcultural curatorial practice to a meeting of Vice Chancellors from Australian and Chinese Universities.

The marked absence of the concept of qi in the academic literature concerning Chinese medicine is highlighted by (1) delineating its importance in the contemporary North American context, and (2) exploring the possible methodological reasons for this shortcoming. The mapping of contexts within which Chinese medicine is received in the U.S. is accomplished by tracking how the concept of qi is translated, understood, and appropriated. Part I explores the North American instantiations of Chinese medicine and situates them within the biomedical context of Complementary and Alternative Medicines (CAMs) and a broader cultural discourse of East-West integrative thought. Part II explores the possible methodological reasons for the neglect of qi in academic discourse. The embodied and tacit nature of qi---as more than an intellectual concept but rather a practical ability---is explored through the concepts of tacit knowledge and orthopraxis. The anthropological literature on embodiment and phenomenology is also reviewed.

This dissertation studies the masculinity models present in contemporary Chinese-American literature. 699 p; The present dissertation is a biographical study of the Xiii century statesman and scholar Yeh-lu Ch'u-ts'ai (1189-1243). It is an attempt to refine our understanding of the life, career and thought of this eminent figure in the history of Asia in the light of his own writings and of contemporary accounts. At the same time it is intended to serve as a preliminary investigation to a major work on the early culture contacts between the Mongols and the Chinese.

This is a study of Wang Yang-ming's philosophy, considered as a "Way" of acquiring wisdom and sage hood, based on his central insight into the nature of (mind-and-heart), the fundamental principle of all human activity which is capable of determining and of perfecting itself through its intuitive knowledge of the good, at once inborn and acquired. The "Introduction" indicates the broad problem of the quest for wisdom, and of the question of "correctness" of approach and "orthodoxy" of thought which arises, in the context of traditional Chinese philosophy. The first chapter defines the so-called "Confucian Way" as a quest for wisdom, with the latter consisting of the attainment of consciousness of the unity of man with all. things, and of the realisation of a high moral character. It speaks of Han Yu’s effort to "restore" Confucian learning, and especially of the Neo-Confucian synthesis accomplished by Chu His. A brief description of Wang Yang-ming as man and philosopher follows, with special emphasis on his interior evolution. His philosophy is then presented in its gradual development, through an analysis of his teachings of hsin, leading up, after exchanges with certain of his contemporary thinkers, to the discovery of his method of acquiring wisdom through the "extension of liang-chih (knowledge of the good)". The deeper implications of his thought and method are then discussed...

The European brand of modernisation that was introduced to China by the force of arms in the 19th-20th centuries had some of its most basic origins in aspects of the traditional Chinese imperial system. This same system impeded China’s ability to resist the imperialist aggressions of modernised “Western” powers and Japan, until the end of the 20th century. Contemporary Chinese culture studies and political, social and economic thought reexamine the “Western” model of modernity from a critical point of view and propose a new postcolonial, postmodern form of modernisation with Chinese characteristics.

In England, the nineteenth-century was a time of change. The social developments instigated by the French Revolution in France were making way across the channel, intensified by the technological innovation generated by the Industrial Revolution. As social hierarchies were altered by the rise of the middle class, so too was political organization disturbed with the passage of the Great Reform act of 1832. The final transition to a constitutional monarchy at home, together with the fall of the ancient Spanish, Chinese, Holy Roman, Portuguese and Mughal empires abroad, made the period a time of unprecedented and fundamental change. Modernity, with a unique concentration on the present rather than the glorification of the past found in classicism or romanticism, would become the measure of social life. While the principles that would define modernism were evolving, as Bram Stoker notes, “the old centuries had, and have, powers of their own which mere ‘modernity’ cannot kill.” The literature of the time reflected the transitional phase within the realism of the newly popular medium – the novel. Exploring the role of self and society, the novel, with the genre of realism as its distinguishing feature, allowed for a theoretic space in which social change could be understood and mastered. With antecedents in autobiographic and epistolary works...

Searching for the Chinese Autonomy: Leo Strauss in the Chinese Context

Focusing on the current "Strauss fever" in contemporary China, this thesis addresses two issues: Why Leo Strauss is popular in China, and how Chinese Straussians interpret and apply Leo Strauss's thought in the Chinese context. I argue that, Chinese Straussians are creatively accepting Leo Strauss's thoughts: Strauss's revival of the ancient Western political philosophy reminds Chinese Straussians to turn their eyes toward ancient Chinese thought. By reemphasizing the value of traditional Chinese wisdom, Chinese Straussians find that they have gained a perspective from which to reevaluate the justification of modernity and all relative Enlightenment and postmodern "isms." According to them, returning to the Chinese philosophical tradition will liberate China from the dominance of modern and contemporary Western thought and reestablish the autonomy of Chinese civilization.

Much recent comparative political theory and philosophy engages the substantive ideas of historically marginalized thought traditions, but ignores the methodological insights that have structured cross-cultural thinking in diverse times and places. In contrast, this essay examines the cross-cultural methodology of Tan Sitong, an influential Chinese reformer of the Qing dynasty who thought critically and carefully about his country’s engagement with Western knowledge. Tan’s work draws attention to how dynamic and plural meaning (dao) in any society is embedded and produced through externally observable practices and institutions (qi) that can be replicable in other communities. Working from these metaphysical assumptions, he draws attention to the possibility of “authentic” imitation of foreign ways of life. His ambitions to authenticity, however, do not affirm a cultural essence so much as they recognize the process of meaning-production as driven by a necessary tension between continuity or replication, on the one hand, and innovation and interpretation, on the other. Tan therefore provides an important corrective to contemporary accounts that emphasizes how the emergent and hybrid character of cultural constructs tends to ignore the ways in which foreign learning can be a site of discipline as well as a target of inclusion.

This paper draws upon the work of the syncretic Chinese Marxist Li Dazhao to elaborate an idea of “global thought” which is more than just a localized form of Western knowledge. Li’s work offers both an example, and also a theory, of global thought: his work emerges from the intersection of multiple trajectories of thought with diverse origins, and in the process offers a theory of agency to explain how action in the present renders those trajectories intelligible as lineages which can inspire future innovations. I argue that this opens the possibility for a global thought defined by a plurality of lineages, whose continuities stretch into the history and future of Asia as well as of Europe. I suggest two such lineages for Li’s work here: one links Li’s work to contemporary Chinese responses; the other to scholarship in political and social theory which emphasizes the vitalist role of time in the exercise of agency. These comparisons demonstrate the extent to which global thought such as Li’s transforms where (and when) thinking in the present and future might ground its arguments, and from which historical materials it might draw its resources.
