peer-reviewed; cross-sectional inter-cohort study explores the dominant motivational factors and career orientations among conventional (CE) and self-initiated (SE) expatriates. Quantitative data was obtained from a sample of 344 SEs and 74 CEs working in the banking sector in Saudi Arabia. Firstly, a principal components analysis (PCA) was conducted to validate a pull-push model of motivations governing the decision to expatriate and a career anchors model. Secondly, six motivational hypotheses and eight career hypotheses derived from a review of the extant literature were tested by means of logistic regression using a forward stepwise procedure. The results of the contextual validation provided support for a five factor pull-push construct and for a nine-career-anchor construct model in contrast with the original eight-anchor model. The findings from the logistic regression analysis reveal that age, marital status and position level made significant contributions to the motivational factors model. The push-motives factor was the strongest predictor in this study to distinguish between CEs and SEs regardless of the effect of the control variables that were included in the model. The results also showed that none of the pull motivational factors produced significant results in predicting either cohort. With respect to career orientations...

Employees maintain a personal view toward their work, which can be referred to as their work orientation. Some employees view their work as their life’s purpose (i.e., calling work orientation) and they tend to be 1) prosocially motivated, 2) derive meaning from work, and 3) feel that their purpose is from beyond the self. The purpose of the current dissertation was to differentiate calling work orientation from other similar workplace constructs, to investigate the most common covariates of calling work orientation, and to empirically test two possible moderators of the relationship between calling work orientation and work-related outcomes of job satisfaction, job performance, and work engagement. Two independent samples were collected for the purpose of testing hypotheses: data were collected from 520 working students and from 520 non-student employees. Participants from the student sample were recruited at Florida International University, and participants from the employee sample were recruited via the Amazon Mechanical Turk website. Participants from the student sample answered demographic questions and responded to self-report measures of job satisfaction, job performance, work engagement, spirituality, meaningful work, prosocial motivation...

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to explore individual approaches to career and employability through the career stories of a group of mid-level to senior managers in career transition. Career patterns are identified and then compared with traditional, boundaryless and protean models of career. The study aims to consider the extent to which individuals in this group had adopted behaviours supportive of future employability as opposed to behaviours more in line with traditional careers. Design/methodology/approach – The research adopted an interpretive and qualitative approach. In-depth interviews were conducted with people currently going through a career transition program. The interviews were recorded and then transcribed, coded and analysed using NVivo, a qualitative research software tool. Findings – Career patterns appeared to be shifting away from traditional careers and more towards protean and boundaryless models. There was evidence of increased responsibility for career self-management and of behaviours supportive of ongoing employability. Self-perceived employability could be linked to degree of job mobility and having a future career orientation. Research limitations/implications – Despite the small sample size and the subjective nature of self-reported career histories the study provides insights into the relationship between career patterns and employability. Both organisations and individuals need to work towards developing attitudes and behaviours supportive of employability such as flexibility...

This thesis analyzes the career orientation of military physicians. Career orientation is analyzed using a logistic regression (logit) model with a dichotomous dependent variable career intention (short-term/long-term). The model is used to analyze the career intentions of four cohorts: all physicians, single physicians, married physicians, and couples (married physicians plus their spouses). The relative importance of various demographic and cognitive/perceptual factors to the career orientation decision is assessed. The results highlight potential policy variables which can be impacted by manpower policy planners to manage the career orientation of military physicians. Purpose – This paper aims to understand women’s careers better in order to help organizations make changes to increase female retention. Two specific questions are addressed: Are women adopting a protean career orientation by becoming career self-agents?; and Are women’s career decisions guided by the kaleidoscope values of challenge, balance, and authenticity? Results are used to discuss changes that organizations can make to better attract and retain female talent. Design/methodology/approach – Open-ended semi-structured interviews were conducted by telephone with 25 women graduates of a top ranked international business school located in the USA who had voluntarily left the workforce at some time in their career and had since returned to work. Findings – Results show that 17 of the women interviewed followed a protean career orientation when they returned to the workforce, finding part-time or reduced-hours positions or completely changing careers. Of the women, five returned to work following a traditional career orientation and three chose to return to a job rather than reinitiating their careers. The vast majority of the women who adopted a protean career were driven to do so in order to satisfy their need for balance in their lives. Overall...

This study was conducted to analyze the factors that affect the career orientation of federal civilian engineers at the Naval Avionics Center in Indianapolis, Indiana. One hundred and sixty-seven scientists and engineers from several engineering divisions were surveyed regarding turnover intentions. Based on literature reviews in the area of turnover with this particular population, a model was developed containing several factors related to intent to remain in the organization. Results indicated that this model predicts the turnover intention with 87.5 percent accuracy. Findings are interpreted in light of ongoing efforts on an organization-wide basis to introduce change in the Center's culture through a quality management program. The principal aim of this paper was to determine what views young Torres Strait Islanders had about their careers and to assess their orientation or approach to work. Young Torres Strait Islanders often express their view of their future in terms of their work. However, as noted elsewhere in the study commitments to career may have to be balanced with those to family. People's notions of career seem influenced by their surrounding social and economic environment. Many young women are keen to work in areas such as health and education while young men are often interested in related trades positions. Despite the fact that commercial fishing is the region's primary industry, and that Islanders are already involved in this not one young person in the survey nominated this as their chosen career. Future stages of this longitudinal study will attempt to find out more about how young people view work in commercial fishing. Cultural background may also influence people's approach to work. For example, they value the opportunity to work with others who understand them and their culture or 'Islander ways' and express some attraction for working in an Islander organisation and/or with other Islanders. However, a high value is also placed on working with people who have skills and who can pass these on. An ideal work environment might be one which includes supervisors who are skilled in their profession or trade and in cross-cultural communication. Young Islanders place a high value on work that is interesting...

Recent findings have indicated the capacity to consolidate multiple items into visual short-term memory in parallel varies as a function of the type of information. That is, while color can be consolidated in parallel, evidence suggests that orientation cannot. Here we investigated the capacity to consolidate multiple motion directions in parallel and reexamined this capacity using orientation. This was achieved by determining the shortest exposure duration necessary to consolidate a single item, then examining whether two items, presented simultaneously, could be consolidated in that time. The results show that parallel consolidation of direction and orientation information is possible, and that parallel consolidation of direction appears to be limited to two. Additionally, we demonstrate the importance of adequate separation between feature intervals used to define items when attempting to consolidate in parallel, suggesting that when multiple items are consolidated in parallel, as opposed to serially, the resolution of representations suffer. Finally, we used facilitation of spatial attention to show that the deterioration of item resolution occurs during parallel consolidation, as opposed to storage.; This work was supported by an Australian Postgraduate Award to R. The aim of this study was to identify and describe skills, characteristics and support networks needed by keystone Life Orientation (LO) teachers in six Gauteng schools. In this study "keystone" refers to LO teachers who make a positive impact in their schools. A qualitative research design was used to collect data through interviews, class observations, and questionnaires. Data were analysed through content analysis. The results indicate that keystone LO teachers must be skilled counselors, career guides and diverse role players. They should also be open, approachable, have integrity, be trustworthy, resolve conflict and make good use of internal and external support within the context of schools. More importantly, it was found that keystone LO teachers are determined by their ability to deal with challenges, such as child abuse, substance abuse, poverty, and HIV/AIDS within their school communities. Based on the findings, the implications for keystone LO teachers in the educational, social and cultural contexts are discussed.

ORIENTATION: Youth unemployment in South Africa presents unique challenges to the young unemployed graduate and requires a range of psychological coping capacities from the young adult. RESEARCH PURPOSE: This study explored the relationship between the psychological career resources (as measured by the Psychological Career Resources Inventory) and coping resources (as measured by the Coping Resources Inventory) of a sample of 196 young unemployed African graduates. MOTIVATION FOR STUDY: There is an increasing need for career counsellors and practitioners to explore the psychological attributes and career-related resources that young people employ or require to help them deal with the challenges posed by unemployment during the school-to-work transition phase of their lives. RESEARCH DESIGN, APPROACH AND METHOD: A survey design and quantitative statistical procedures were used to achieve the research objective. Convenience sampling was used on a population of 500 unemployed graduate black people who attended a 12-week Work Readiness Programme (39% response rate). MAIN FINDINGS: Multiple regression analyses indicated that dimensions of psychological career resources contribute significantly to explaining the proportion of variance in the participants' coping resources scores. PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS: The insights derived from the findings can be employed by career counsellors and practitioners to construct a more comprehensive career framework for the individual in the school-to-work transition phase. CONTRIBUTION/VALUE-ADD: The findings add valuable new knowledge that can be used to inform career services concerned with guiding and counselling young graduates in the school-to-work transition phase.
