Effectiveness of the CAGE questionnaire, gamma-glutamyltransferase and mean corpuscular volume of red blood cells as markers for alcohol-related problems in the workplace

Objective: To evaluate the usefulness of gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT) and mean corpuscular volume (MCV), as well as that of the CAGE questionnaire, in workplace screening for alcohol abuse/dependence. Methods: A total of 183 male employees were submitted to structured interviews (Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV 2.0 and CAGE questionnaire). Blood samples were collected. Diagnostic accuracy and odds ratio were determined for the CAGE, GGT and MCV. Results: The CAGE questionnaire presented the best sensitivity for alcohol dependence (91%; specificity, 87.8%) and for alcohol abuse (87.5%, specificity, 80.9%), which increased when the questionnaire was used in combination with GGT (sensitivity, 100% and 87.5%, respectively; specificity, 68% and 61.5, respectively). CAGE positive results and/or alterations in GGT were less likely to occur among employees not presenting alcohol abuse/ dependence than among those presenting such abuse (OR for CAGE = 13, p < 0.05; OR for CAGE-GGT = 11, p < 0.05) or dependence (OR for CAGE = 76, p < 0.0 1; OR for GGT = 5, p < 0.0 1). Este texto examina as principais diferenças de enfoque relacionadas ao papel dos intérpretes na realização de duas diferentes propostas de jogo. Para tanto, são comparadas algumas obras de John Cage e as práticas de grupos que se dedicam à livre improvisação musical, principalmente do grupo Akronon.1 Procura-se demonstrar que as propostas de Cage, que estão situadas num plano conceitual, e as propostas da livre improvisação, que partem de uma prática experimental interativa baseada numa manipulação empírica dos sons, resultam em concepções bastante distintas a respeito do papel do intérprete. This study assessed the effect of different cage stocking densities on the performance of Italian quails in the laying period. Two hundred and sixty four quails with 30 weeks of age and 280g mean body weight were used. Birds were randomly assigned to 96 x 33 x 16 cm cages and distributed in a randomized block design with 4 treatments (12, 15, 18 and 21 quails per cage or 264, 211, 176 and 151 cm² per quail, respectively) and 4 replicates. Birds were given feed and water ad libitum and submitted to the same experimental conditions. The experimental diet was formulated based on NRC (1994) recommendations. There were no significant differences among treatments for feed conversion per egg mass (kg:kg), percentage of broken eggs and mortality. There was a linear reduction (p<0.05) in egg weight, feed consumption, percentage of production, egg mass and feed conversion per dozen with the increase in stocking density. The gain per house per day was better at the cage density of 151 cm² per bird. However, the density of 211 cm² per bird provided the best gain per bird per day, because this stocking density had better productive indexes when compared with the other treatments.

A respiração, em especial a fase da ventilação, é um ato dinâmico dependente da ação coordenada dos músculos respiratórios e da movimentação das estruturas osteo-articulares da caixa torácica. O presente trabalho objetiva propor e avaliar uma metodologia baseada em videogrametria para a análise experimental quantitativa da movimentação da caixa torácica durante a respiração bem como variáveis descritoras da movimentação da mesma. Para tanto, foi utilizado um sistema de análise cinemática tridimensional de movimentos (Dvideow) para obter a descrição das trajetórias espaciais de 38 marcadores fixados sobre referências anatômicas na caixa torácica de 14 sujeitos saudáveis. O presente trabalho teve como objetivo propor e validar um novo método para análise cinemática tridimensional da movimentação da caixa torácica durante a respiração e mostrar uma aplicação do mesmo. A análise cinemática foi utilizada para descrever a movimentação tridimensional das costelas durante a respiração. As coordenadas 3D de marcadores posicionados sobre as costelas e vértebras foram utilizadas para calcular as distâncias transversais e ântero-posteriores da caixa torácica e a orientação das costelas em função do tempo. O método identificou um sinal coerente com o ciclo respiratório para todas as distâncias calculadas e também para os ângulos das costelas ao redor de um eixo quasi-transversal representando os movimentos de elevação e abaixamento das costelas. Também foi capaz de medir a maior variação das distâncias ântero-posteriores e transversais da caixa torácica durante respirações em capacidade vital quando comparadas a respirações em volume corrente. OBJETIVO: Determinar se o questionário CAGE (composto por quatro perguntas de fácil memorização) é capaz de suprir a dificuldade de detecção do alcoolismo. MATERIAL E MÉTODO: Realizamos um estudo transversal com amostragem consecutiva em pacientes da Clínica Médica do pronto-socorro do Hospital Universitário Cajuru, os quais foram submetidos a uma entrevista padronizada constituída pelo questionário CAGE e pelo CIDI (Composite International Diagnostic Interview, seções "demografia" e "desordens resultantes do uso de álcool"). Da amostra obtida (n=374), correlacionamos a prevalência de alcoolismo segundo ambos os questionários, considerando o CIDI (critérios do DSM-IV) como sendo o padrão-ouro. RESULTADOS: A prevalência de dependência de álcool segundo os critérios do DSM-IV foi de 15,77%. Nós verificamos que o CAGE possui sensibilidade igual a 84,74% e especificidade igual a 73,33% para um ponto de corte igual a duas respostas afirmativas. Conclusões: Concluímos que o questionário CAGE é um instrumento de fácil aplicação e boa sensibilidade e especificidade quando usado no ambiente de pronto-socorro, podendo suprir as dificuldades de detecção do alcoolismo. Cathodic cage discharge was developed recently in order to eliminate phenomena as edge effect and overheating, which occurs during conventional processes. In this study, the effect of cage configuration in active species during the deposition process and optical properties of TiN film were studied. TiN compound was chosen because its optical properties are very sensitive to slight variations in microstructure and film thickness, becoming a good monitoring tool in fabrication process control. Cages were made of titanium and have different holes numbers and holes diameter. Electrical efficiency of the system and optical properties of TiN films were strongly influenced by experimental conditions. It was found that with more holes at the top of cage, deposition rate and crystallinity were higher, if compared to cages with a small number of holes at the top. On the other hand, the opposite behavior was observed when more holes were located at the sidewall of cage.

Cylindrical samples of AISI 1020 steel were nitrided, using the techniques of conventional plasma nitriding and cathodic cage. In the latter, the samples are kept at floating potential, inside of a cage that works as a cathode and to shield the samples from the cathodic potential. A systematic study was conducted in order to evaluate the efficiency of this technique in the elimination of edge effect, in comparison with conventional plasma nitriding. In addition, another comparative study of the phases obtained using the conventional plasma nitriding and nitriding with cathodic cage was performed. Two metallic cages were used, one made of austenitic stainless AISI 316 and other one made of AISI 1020 steel, to prove the effect of deposition in nitriding with cathodic cage. The samples which were nitrided by this new technique had shown nitriding rates, crystalline phases, and microhardness, similar to those samples which were nitrided conventionally. However, it was possible to confirm the elimination of edge effect through the characterization by optical microscopy and by microhardness test along the samples surfaces. The samples were characterized by optical microscopy, microhardness tests and X-ray diffraction.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to verify the influence of net-cage fish farming on zooplankton biomass in the Itá reservoir (Uruguay River, Brazil). METHODS: Samples were collected monthly from October/2009 to May/2010 at the surface and at the bottom in two sampling stations, the net-cage area and in a control area using a Van Dorn bottle and a plankton net (68 µm). RESULTS: The Cladocera and Copepoda biomass was estimated by dry weight using a micro-analytical balance, and the Rotifera biomass by Biovolume. Total zooplankton biomass varied between 6.47 and 131.56 mgDW.m-3 Calanoida copepod presented the highest value of biomass (127.56 mgDW.m-3) and rotifers, despite having an important contribution to total density, showed a maximum biomass of 2.01 mgDW.m-3. Zooplankton biomass at the net-cage area surface was higher when compared with the control area during the months of October to January. However, the zooplankton biomass was similar at the bottom of the two areas throughout the studied period. From February until May, zooplankton biomass decreased in both sampling stations, a fact probably associated with the flushing of the reservoir, followed by an increase in water transparency and a decrease in chlorophyll-a concentration in the following months (February to May). CONCLUSIONS: The influence of fish farming on zooplankton biomass was detected at the surface of the net-cage area only from October to January. From February to May this influence was not found...

An inexpensive cage has been designed and constructed to study oviposition and fecundity of the citrus psylla, Trioza erytreae (Del Guercio) (Hemiptera: Homoptera: Psyllidae) and for trials to determine transmission of the greening disease of citrus by many different small homopterous insects. The main advantage of this cage is that small insects can temporarily be drawn to the walls of the cage by static electricity. This facilitates the replacement of the terminal branches of nursery trees. The risk of insects escaping is minimal.

The samples are kept at a floating potential inside a cage that acts as a cathode and shields the samples from the cathodic potential. The aim of this work is to perform a systematic study of the properties of nitrided layers as a function of the distance from the nitriding sample surface to the cage wall using this technique. Cylindrical austenitic stainless steel AISI 316 samples were placed in different positions on an alumina plate inside the cathodic cage. The nitrided samples were characterized by optical microscopy,X-ray diffraction and microhardness measurements. The results show that the temperature inside the cage is nearly uniform and that the nitrided layers possess good physical properties and uniformity.Therefore, the differences in the nitrided layer thicknesses obtained at different positions must be due to particle flow reaching the sample surface, depending on how far the sample is from the cage walls

The kinetics for outer-sphere electron transfer between a series of cobalt(II) poly-aza cage ligand complexes and the iron(III) sarcophagine-type hexa-aza cage complex, [Fe(sar)]3+ (sar = 3,6,10,13,16,19-hexaazabicyclo[6.6.6]icosane), in aqueous solution have been investigated and the Marcus correlation is used to deduce the electron self-exchange rate constant for the [Fe(sar)]3+/2+ couple from these cross-reactions. The deduced electron self-exchange rate constant is in relatively good agreement with the experimentally determined rate constant (k ex calc = 4 ´ 10 5 M -1 s -1 ; k ex obs = 8 ´ 10 5 M -1 s -1 ). The successful application of the Marcus correlation to the electron transfer reactions of the Fe cage complex is consistent with the trend for the Co, Mn, Ni and Ru cage complexes which all follow the pattern of outer-sphere electron transfer reactivity expected from the Marcus-Hush formalism. A comparison of predictions based on the Marcus correlation with the experimentally determined kinetics of an extended series of cross reactions involving cobalt cage complexes with low-spin-high-spin cobalt(III)/(II) couples shows that electron transfer reactions involving large spin changes at the metal centre are not necessarily anomalous in the context of the adiabatic Marcus-Hush formalism. The Taguchi method is a statistical approach to overcome the limitation of the factorial and fractional factorial experiments by simplifying and standardizing the fractional factorial design. The objective of the current study is to illustrate the procedures and strengths of the Taguchi method in biomechanical analysis by using a case study of a cervical ring cage optimization. A three-dimensional finite element (FE) model of C5–C6 with a generic cervical ring cage inserted was modelled. Taguchi method was applied in the optimization of the cervical ring cage in material property and dimensions for producing the lowest stress on the endplate to reduce the risk of cage subsidence, as in the following steps: (1) establishment of objective function; (2) determination of controllable factors and their levels; (3) identification of uncontrollable factors and test conditions; (4) design of Taguchi crossed array layout; (5) execution of experiments according to trial conditions; (6) analysis of results; (7) determination of optimal run; (8) confirmation of optimum run. The results showed that a cage with larger width, depth and wall thickness can produce the lower von Mises stress under various conditions. The contribution of implant materials is found trivial. The current case study illustrates that the strengths of the Taguchi method lie in (1) consistency in experimental design and analysis; (2) reduction of time and cost of experiments; (3) robustness of performance with removing the noise factors. Ein biodegradierbarer Cage kann eine Vielzahl von Vorteilen gegenüber dem autologen trikortikalen Beckenkammspan und metallischen Cages bieten. Zum jetzigen Zeitpunkt steht jedoch kein solcher für die Anwendung beim Menschen zur Verfügung. Ziel dieser Studie war, 2 Fusionstechniken für die intervertebrale Spondylodese miteinander zu vergleichen. Der autologe trikortikale Beckenkammspan wurde mit einem biodegradierbaren Cage in einem tierexperimentellen Fusionsmodell für die intervertebrale Spondylodese an Schafhalswirbelsäulen von 16 ausgewachsenen Merinoschafen verglichen. Nach 12 Wochen konnte kein signifikanter Unterschied zwischen dem biodegradierbaren PLDLLA-Cage und dem trikortikalen Beckenkammspan für die intervertebrale Fusion an der Schafhalswirbelsäule gefunden werden. Jedoch zeigte der PLDLLA-Cage im gesamten Intervertebralraum Fremdkörperreaktionen von Grad I–III. Cette prémisse dérive elle-même d’une confrontation locale : les spécificités et les idiosyncrasies de la textualité mise en place par John Cage à partir des années quarante (partitions littéraires des recueils Silence et A Year from Monday, mésostiches de M et X, réécritures et « writing through » d’Empty Words…). En effet, l’examen par la théorie littéraire d’un corpus aussi disséminé et « néologique » que l’est celui de John Cage pousse son rédacteur à poser la question de sa propre écriture (« autoréflexivité ») et à rendre possible une réalisation artistique personnelle (« performativité »). C’est donc à travers la contingence d’une langue et d’une subjectivité au travail que la théorisation (textuelle) du texte cherche ici à s’élucider et à s’écrire. Le travail commence par installer les modalités à la fois circulaires et circulatoires de la théorie littéraire...

A laboratory cage for foster nursing newborn mice

We describe a cage to be used for foster nursing in order to guarantee that original mother's colostrum is not ingested by the newborn mice. A common (30.5 cm x 19.5 cm x 12.0 cm) mouse cage was fitted with a wire net tray with a mesh (1 cm x 1 cm), which divides the cage into an upper and a lower compartment. Mice born to females placed in the upper compartment pass through the mesh and fall into the lower compartment, where another lactating female with one or two of its own pups are. Of a total of 28 newborn mice of C3H/He and Swiss strains, 23 were successfully fostered. Important observations are presented to show that this is a valuable alternative for foster studies without great suffering on the part of the female.

Effect of cage density on the performance of 25- to 84-week-old laying hens

Three experiments were carrie out to evaluate the influence of cage density on the performance of 25- to 84-week-old laying hens. Forty hundred Lohmann-LSL layers were distributed in cages (100x40x 45x50cm) according to a completely randomized experimental design with split plot in time.Three treatments (10, 12, or 14 hens per cage, corresponding, to 450, 375, and 321cm²/bird, respectively), with 15 assessment periods (four weeks each), and eight replicates per treatment were applied. Considering that layer's production cycle is affected by age, three experimental trials (25 to 44; 45 to 64 and 65 to 84 weeks of age) were carried out, and the data collected in each trial was individually analyzed. Increasing cage density significantly reduced feed intake in all phases studied. Increasing birds/cm² significantly decreased feed intake and improved feed conversion at all stages of study, and egg production was only affected in 45-week-old birds. The number of birds per cage should be reduced as birds age in order not to affect their performance. Birds with more cage space in the presented higher feed intake; however, this did not result in higher egg production or lower mortality. These results suggest that up to 45 weeks of age, 375 cm² per layer results in the best performance...

Stand-alone cage neck fusions: A long-term review

BACKGROUND: Anterior cervical decompression and fusion (ACDF) is a well-known treatment for persistent cervical radiculopathy or myelopathy. Fusion is performed to stabilise the segment, maintain foraminal height, and maintain the normal sagittal profile. The stand-alone cage concept, initiated by Bagby, has been used in the human spine since 1988. There are some concerns with stand-alone cages regarding expulsion and migration of the cage. AIM: To review the long-term outcome of stand-alone cage fusions done from 2000-2010 at 1 Military Hospital and describe our experience with this procedure. METHODS: A retrospective review of stand-alone cage neck fusion of 55 levels in 35 patients performed between January 2000 and December 2010 at 1 Military Hospital was done. Clinical notes and X-rays were reviewed. Fusion rate was assessed using standard X-rays with flexion/extension views. RESULTS: Seven patients (14%) had a non-union, giving a fusion rate of 86%. Five non-unions were painful. One patient had a revision for a painful non-union (NDI score: 35/50). One patient refused to have a revision at last visit despite having significant pain (NDI score: 27/50). One patient with a double level non-union has phaeochromocytoma with significant risk to revision and chose not to have the surgery (NDI score: 14/50). Two patients are on the waiting list for a revision in the near future (NDI scores: 24/50 and 19/50). The two remaining patients with non-unions are asymptomatic (NDI scores: 0/50 and 7/50. CONCLUSION: Stand-alone cage fusion is a safe and effective procedure providing a favourable clinical and radiological outcome. Good fusion rates can be obtained (86% in our study) with this method.
