Master in International Management / JEL Classifications: L93 - Air Transportation R11 - Regional Economic Activity: Growth, Development, and Changes; This study identifies the short term impacts of Low-Cost Airlines (LCAs) on Madeira Islands. By analysing the relevant literature, this study describes the interdependence between tourism and air transport, and the effect that the low-cost airline concept has on both industries. Both generic and industry specific impacts are drawn from the literature, while explaining the advantages and disadvantages of this airline business model. LCAs have experienced tremendous growth in Europe since its birth in the mid 1990’s and have now reached Madeira Islands, a tourism destination still served mainly by charter operations offering tour operator’s package holidays. Research made out of airport and tourism statistics, shows evidence of a significant mismatch between offer and demand in the tourism industry that could possibly be diminished by the entry of LCAs in the market. Findings suggest that, as previously observed for other regions, LCAs do in fact generate significant airport passenger growth, therefore increasing the number of tourists visiting the islands and spending nights at the hotels. However...

Trabalho de Projeto apresentado como requisito parcial para obtenção do grau de Mestre em Estatística e Gestão de Informação; As airlines strive to gain market share and sustain profitability in today’s economically challenging environment, they should develop new ways to optimize their frequent flyer programs while increase revenues. Aware of the challenges, airlines want to implement a customer relationship management (CRM) strategy based on customer analytics and data mining techniques to support marketing decisions. So, to achieve this goal, we have to apply clustering techniques to the company customer databases and develop a single view of customer across their demographic and behavioral characteristics as well as their value for the company. This will enable the company to identify the most profitable customers and run marketing campaigns more efficiently.

This paper analyzes the main factors that affect the strategies to reduce airlines costs. These costs factors were presented to experts from the airline industry through two rounds of questionnaires in sense to be weighed. It was applied a method based on the structure of the AHP (Analytic Hierarchy Process) and the results show that the main important factors for a cost-related airlines strategy are, in importance: route structure and mesh; type and characteristics of the aircraft; cost of labor and management quality. This hierarchy can help the decision maker when facing the need of defining priorities in reduction costs. past decades despite the increase in air transportation and significant decrease in average operation costs, it is observed that airlines have low profitability. The liberalization of the markets and increase opportunities for competition diminishes prices, even when airlines face increasing costs. Considering that advantage in costs is an important strategy for carriers to remain in the market, this paper analyzes the main factors that affect the strategies to reduce airlines costs. These costs factors were presented to experts from the airline industry through two rounds of questionnaires in sense to be weighed. The airline industry has performed inconsistently since deregulation in 1978 and there has been a significant profit discrepancy between legacy airlines and low-cost carriers. Starting from the early 2000s, four of the largest legacy airlines chose to consolidate with an effort to increase efficiency and profitability. Delta Air Lines and Northwest Airlines have consolidated in 2008, becoming the largest commercial airline in the world. This paper examined the merger effect on the airfares on top 1,000 U.S. domestic city-pair routes in relation to the number of passengers, the distance, and the market share as well as its potential anticompetitive issues. All airlines were categorized into three groups - Legacy Airlines, Delta-Northwest, and Low-Cost Carriers - and the interactions between the airfares and the variables were examined within each airline group and across different airline groups. It was found that the airfares of legacy airlines and Delta-Northwest decreased at a faster rate than the low-cost carriers while their market shares increased simultaneously irrespective of whether they offered the lowest prices or had the largest market share on each route.

Air cargo origin destination flows in the Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) region are heavily concentrated in the largest economies of South America and Mexico. With 32.7 percent of the airfreight moved to, from, and within the region, Brazil is the largest cargo market, followed by Colombia and Mexico, with 17.9 percent and 16.0 percent, respectively. The relatively small size of the air cargo market in LAC can be explained by: (i) low levels of demand for air cargo services (supply responds adequately to a low demand for air cargo services in/from LAC), or (ii) restrictions to a properly functioning market that impede the air cargo market to reach its full potential. The analysis carried out for the preparation of this paper indicates that the low levels of demand is the most reasonable explanation for the small size of the LAC air cargo market. There is room to improve some regulations which would make the air cargo market work more efficiently and probably at lower costs, but the size and diversity of the market will not significantly change as a result. Airport infrastructure quality fairs well overall...

In - Commuter Airlines: Their Changing Role – an essay by J. A. F. Nicholls, Transportation Coordinator, Department of Marketing and Environment, College of Business Administration, Florida International University, Nicholls initially observes: “The great majority of airline passenger miles flown in the United States are between large conurbations. People living in metropolitan areas may be quite unaware of commuter airlines and their role in our transportation system. These airlines are, however, communications lifelines for dwellers in small - and not so small - towns and rural areas. More germanely, commuter airlines have also developed a pivotal role vis-a-vis the major carriers in this country. The author discusses the antecedents of the commuter Airlines, their current role, and future prospects.” Huh; conurbations? Definition: [n.] a large urban area created when neighboring towns spread into and merge with each other In providing a brief history on the subject of commuter airlines, Nicholls states: “…there had been a sort of commuter airline as far back as 1926 when, for example, the Florida Airways Corporation provided flights between Jacksonville and Atlanta, Colonial Air Lines between New York and Boston, and Ford Air Transport from Detroit to Cleveland.” “The passage of the Civil Aeronautics Act in 1938 was pivotal in encouraging and developing a passenger orientation by the airlines…” Nicholls informs you. Nicholls provides for the importance of this act by saying: “The CAA was empowered to act “in the public interest and in accordance with the public convenience and necessity.” Only the CAA itself could determine what constituted the “public convenience and necessity.” Nobody...

This paper analyses airlines’ efficiency and productivity using two different methodologies: data envelopment analysis and total factor productivity, and we additionally investigate which factors account for differences in efficiency. Our main findings show that low cost carriers are in general more efficient than full service carriers, efficiency and the dispersion of both data envelopment analysis and total factor productivity indexes amongst airlines differ according to geographical areas, which may be a result of different legislation and de-regulation processes, and so of specific competitive conditions, labour is the only input that definitively influences productivity, and larger airlines are more efficient, suggesting the existence of economies of scale.

This research report explores the levels of assistance available for people with disabilities at Australian airports. This is achieved by analyzing the legislative acts and disability assistance systems at major international airports around the world and a simultaneous examination the current codification and practices at Australian airports. One of the reasons that prompted this study is the recent media attention that has been given to the negative experiences of people with disabilities at Australian airports. For example, in November 2009, Kurt Feamley, who crawled the Kokoda Track in New Guinea ended up doing the same through a Brisbane airport terminal and to a restroom after Jetstar staff refused to allow him to use his own wheelchair 1 • In Australia, airlines have contractual and statutory obligations to provide services to people with disabilities. However, there is no mandatory regulation or code of practice for the aviation industry to provide services to people with disabilities in Australia. Further, it should be noted that the aviation industry has to comply with provisions from bodies such as Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA), Australian Building Codes Board (ABCB) in Australian and International Aviation Transport Authority (lATA) and International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) internationally. These laws are intended to cater to the needs of people with disabilities and their carers in accessing air travel. However...

In the late 1980s and the 1990s many countries privatized airports or concessioned their operation. The United Kingdom began the trend, followed by other countries adopting new forms of infrastructure ownership and management. To control infrastructure licensing and the "natural monopoly" characteristics of some airport services, governments developed regulatory policies for airport systems. The operation of an airport creates incentives to transfer the airport's market power to the air transport market. If the airport market is regulated but the airport operator is allowed to control at least one airline, those incentives can give rise to anticompetitive practices aimed at displacing competing airlines. When the regulatory framework for airports lacks explicit rules about such vertical integration, that can have consequences for competition in the air transport market. Australia and Chile, for example, have an explicit prohibition on vertical integration. By contrast, Argentina has no restrictions on vertical integration leaving it to the antitrust agency to decide whether to approve or reject a vertical merger. Airlines provide air transport services by combining aircraft...

The reason for this test is in order to analyze the problems that occurred in the period of 2007 and 2009 on low cost airlines and the issues concerning competition and sound business practices. This research was based on the lived experience of other countries and also part of the process that began to build in the Colombian aviation sector in that period of time. This study analyzes the effectof changes in corporate controlon the way shareholdersbenefit from the announcements of selling and buying airlines, thus contributing to the literature on mergers and acquisitions (M&As) in emerging markets. Using a methodologyof event study, including GARCH and OLS models, we find evidence that some selling companies obtain abnormal returns that are statisticallysignificant after the announcement of the M&A. However, when the merger is not strategic, the companies present statisticallysignificant negative abnormal returns. The resultsare not conclusive when analyzing the effecton the valueof the buying companies.

The purpose of this thesis is to assess the potential for low-cost airlines in Asia. Low-cost airlines have been very successful in North America and Europe and have significantly impacted the airline industry and its stakeholders. In what ways and to what extent this might be repeatable in Asia is the underlying question of this thesis. An investigation of the low-cost airline business model reveals that there are a number of key elements that make it so successful on both sides of the Atlantic. But what works in North America and Europe may not be feasible in Asia. An analysis of the Asian airline industry shows that it differs from the rest of the world in several important dimensions, which will substantially affect prospective low-cost airlines. On the one hand, the rigid regulatory frameworks in most parts of Asia and the fact that many traditional Asian airlines have some of the world's lowest unit costs may not allow Asian low-cost airlines to thrive in the same way as they have in other parts of the world. On the other hand, a breakdown of Asia's socioeconomic indicators shows that the continent is bound to experience significant growth in intra-Asia air travel over the coming years. The low-cost airline business in Asia is therefore challenging in several ways but potentially very lucrative. The possible impacts that an increasing presence of low-cost airlines in Asia would have on the various stakeholders in the region are substantial. While some of these stakeholders will likely benefit from a growing presence of low-cost airlines in Asia...

The online travel business is widely expected to be one of the Internet's biggest commerce breakthroughs by the millennium. Airlines have focused their web efforts on reinforcing their relationship with their customers. As the largest airline and the fourth-largest airline in the world respectively, both United Airlines and Northwest Airlines, the leaders of e-commerce in the transportation industry, have established a strong presence at the emerging travel purchase outlets being used by a growing number of airline consumers . The literature review focuses on the application of Blur's effects (Davis, 1998) on the two and describes their main development in customer service and main operations of current travel agents in providing customers with in-time and whole package service. Comparison tables illustrate the detailed features of United Airlines' and Northwest Airlines' Websites regarding the ten attributes of an offer. Overall, the results show that homepage and Internet sales provide the customer conveniences, flexibility and choice. Without question, Internet purchasing, Internet check in, automatic paging, on-board Internet access, new on-line procurement sites, have brought the business-to-business efficiencies that will help organizations contain costs. They are becoming truly interactive places...
