Digital technologies are transforming audiences and media practices. In a context of serialization this paper wants to make the case for television series as much of the attention from the industry and the academy is drawn by music and cinema neglecting the effects on television viewing. Lawrence Lessig has proposed “remix” as one of the main outcomes of social and cultural practices enabled by new technologies that allow for easy production and sharing. Henry Jenkins talks of a "convergence culture" and many other authors refer a participatory turn. But this surge of creativity and participation poses new challenges to the industry and to the study of audiences. With the surge of transmediality and new platforms such as mobile phones and tablets, as well as enabling tools for massified DYI, the experience of television series consumption has been completely changed. This is particularly notable in youth audiences where television is still pervasive but networked media practices are gaining ground, namely a serialized participation culture characterized by immediacy, anticipation, control, emotional affordance and freedom. Based in a mixed methodology, composed of a quantitative online survey and a qualitative focus group approach...

The paths taken by young people in the spaces of the contemporary world have been measured by different opportunities at school, work, leisure and culture that eventually have set standards for their lives. The ways that they use their bodies, tattoos, body piercing, earrings, hats and settling their hair with it??s flippancy hair and tones, the way they dress up, listen to music, dance, exchanging glances, greetings and space / time that they share in school and out of it, help them with their, give directions for their lives and gives us clues to the diversity between them. This report responds to the growing concern over issues facing Maldivian youth today, and specifically, to a request made by the Ministry of Youth and Sports to examine the status of youth in the Maldives. Such concerns are certainly warranted, particularly in light of a regional youth bulge which is taking place in South Asia, as well as an observed increase in at risk behavior such as youth drug use and membership in gangs. While a number of studies have sought to examine youth issues in the Maldives, a comprehensive and holistic assessment is lacking. This report was aimed at helping to fill this knowledge gap. This report examines issues affecting young people in the Maldives as they transition from adolescence to adulthood, and based on this analysis and a review of international good practice, recommends a number of actions for the Government s consideration. The analysis focused on youth experiences as they pertain to: health, education, labor, family structure, gangs and violence, and civic engagement and participation. A youth development framework...

Africa’s population is young and growing at twice the pace of other continents. A youth bulge presents a series of development policy opportunities and challenges. In this context, simplistic linkages between the youth bulge, high unemployment, and fragility have gained traction and given rise to a youth policy agenda that targets urban male youth as the problem and emphasizes formal sector development as the solution. This paper questions some of the core assumptions that underpin mainstream perceptions of the linkages between youth, employment, and fragility in West Africa, and presents an alternative analysis. The study will use the language of livelihoods to reflect on youth employment experiences, as livelihoods take into account the capabilities, assets (including both material and social resources), and activities required for a means of living beyond traditional ideas of employment, and thus enable a deeper, more sophisticated understanding of the realities of many young West Africans. The paper argues that a nuanced understanding of specific groups of young people and their livelihood activities in their specific social...

This paper proposes a theoretical rereading of adolescent risk-taking experiences by adopting a sociocultural perspective. Thus, drawing from E. Erikson’s (1963, 1968) conception of identity exploration and experimentation, combined with V. Turner’s (1969, 1974) anthropological research on symbols, rituals, and liminal processes, as well as with recent research on the culture of risk-taking in adolescence (e.g., Eagan & Thorne, 2010; Lightfoot, 1997; Thorne & McLean, 2003), this paper argues that the so- called externalizing problems (and, more specifically, engagement in antisocial acting out) embody deep cultural scripts. These scripts, as we construe them, seem to obey a general schema that is crucial to contemporary youth culture and that one may phrase as “less structure and more intensity”, in line with Turner’s “anti-structure” concepts of “liminality” and “communitas”. In addition, this correlates with a sui generis style of reflexive storytelling strongly marked by discontinuity and ruptures, emblematically illustrated by episodes of interpersonal loss and ephemeral deviancy. We maintain that such forms of acting out constitute the embodiment of symbols which are rewritten and ritualized in peer groups...

The report is organized along the different dimensions of youth inclusion. Chapter two investigates voice and participation of young Tunisians, and identifies both constraints and opportunities for their engagement in civic and political life. Chapter three highlights available economic opportunities for young Tunisians and presents the state of employment and entrepreneurship, including informal work, as well as gender and regional disparities, and relevant socioeconomic and educational data. Chapter four discusses economic exclusion through unemployment and inactivity, and highlights the severity of the situation faced by young Tunisians that are not in education, employment or training (NEET). Chapter five discusses programs and services relevant to employment, for example, the Active Labor Market Programs (ALMPs) and, including the programs' quality and impact. Chapter six presents conclusions and recommendations, recognizing the need to address the interrelatedness of the different dimensions by combining a strong focus on inclusive youth policy and institutions with a call for youth participation in decision-making.

Trinidad and Tobago has experienced increasing social problems relating to its youth population despite the economy's improved performance. The report aims to uncover and analyze key issues facing the youths, explore a rationale for investing in youth development activities, review current services for youth, examine the existing and proposed policy and legislation relating to youth and capacity for its implementation, and propose interventions to reduce the risks faced by youths and increase the potential for social and human capital development. This report highlights the two principal exclusionary factors that contribute to increasing conditions of risk for youth in Trinidad and Tobago: a) restricted access to the secondary education system, which leaves out one third of the school-aged population; and b) the high level of unemployment, which reaches 30 percent for the 15 - 19 cohort, compared to 14 percent for the rest of the population. In addition, poverty, reduced family care, and exposure to youth protective services and the judicial system pose developmental risks that may contribute to negative outcomes such as youth involvement in crime and drug culture...

This work attempts to question the propositions of this dossier, that is, youth cultures in high schools, in order to allow the visualization of their underlying tensions. Firstly, youth cultures/adult culture tension is analyzed, considering youth culture origins and current developments; the consumer market/youth rebelliousness tension; the new/old tension; the Authority/authorities tension. All this within the National State crisis context and the loss of meaning of the school institution, particularly at the secondary level. Finally, the knowledge/ acknowledgement of youth cultures is deemed mandatory, as part of the process by which we teachers assume responsibility for the world we represent in order to build our authority, while acknowledging the authority of the young. The proposition includes learning from teachers working in rural and marginal areas in conditions of socio-economical diversity and multiple cultures, since these conditions currently appear in most schools as a result of changes in the second half of the twentieth century.; Se trata aquí de problematizar la propuesta de este dossier, las culturas juveniles en la enseñanza media, permitiendo visibilizar las tensiones que subyacen a la misma. Finalmente...

Many cultural events that happen in the city - with little visibility in the school - have young people as their main participants. Young people create their own spaces of socialization which become culturally expressive territories where different identities develop. Culture manifests itself as a privileged space of social practices, representations, symbols and rituals. The production of identities not only demarcates areas of social and collective practices but brings into play the common interests that gives meaning to ”being together” and being part of a group. Spaces of autonomy are outlined in juvenile cultural territories. These spaces conquered by young people allow them to turn those same environments redefining them from their own specific practices. The article presents and discusses contemporary social and cultural processes that produce the so-called youth culture and intends to draw attention to the necessary recognition of these processes by the school. Youth cultural groups are crucial for the socialization of high school students who, as well as being students, are also subjects in other cultural spaces and temp’s of the city.; Diversas manifestações culturais presentes na cidade – e com baixa visibilidade no espaço escolar – têm os jovens como atores principais.

This article analyzes the engendered and lived youth sociabilities in the school environment. Through them, we question the way in which youth culture is related to the school and also how they deal with prejudice and discrimination. We argue that the school is an important space for sociability in youth culture. It is where significant part of social relations takes place. Nevertheless, this important dimension of the formation process is not an object of pedagogical intervention. The perceived sociabilities incorporate a meaningful discriminatory constituent based on color, race, gender and religious affiliation prejudice. Practiced in classrooms, hallways, courtyards and school courts, they are not object of educational action but in borderline cases, subject to punishment.; O presente artigo analisa as sociabilidades juvenis engendradas e vividas no ambiente escolar.

This article provided an overview of youth culture and how the media shapes youth culture today. Its specific aim was to focus on the access to sexual content that the different forms of media provide and the possible effect that they have on youth culture today. The sexual development of teenagers is one of the most important areas of their journey into adulthood and can easily be influenced by media messages on sex and sexuality. As such, the sexual behaviour of teenagers mostly seems to demonstrate a misconception on sex and sexuality. The author argued that sex and sexuality can also be viewed as theological issues and concluded by offering a few suggestions on how faith communities can become a more relevant and effective partner in fostering a theological understanding of sex and sexuality, especially to the youth.

This article presents the results of a research project on young people and their cultural and leisure practices, and their networks of sociability and exchange (including conflictual relations) in the urban context of São Paulo city. After introducing and discussing the terms 'urban tribes and youth culture,' I propose another term, 'youth circuits,' as an alternative approach to the theme. Instead of emphasizing the fact that they are young - thereby supposedly linking a wide range of different manifestations to a common denominator - the idea is to highlight their insertion in the urban scenario through an ethnography of the spaces where they circulate and meet, the occasions where conflict erupts, and the partners with whom they establish exchange relationships. By adopting this approach, I intend to connect two elements that are present in this dynamic: firstly, behaviours; and secondly, the urban spaces, institutions and installations. The idea is to call attention to (1) sociability, rather than consumption and styles of expression linked to the generational issue; (2) to permanence and regularity, rather than fragmentation and nomadism.
