466 p., illustrated, 30 cm.; Serrano de Wilson (1834?-1922) was a Spanish writer who produced historical and sociological works, as well as novels, literary translations, and guides to conduct for young women. In this, her most ambitious work, Serrano de Wilson displays an encyclopedic range of interests, including history, ethnology, climatology, and botany, and it clearly reflects her three overriding passions: literature, traveling, and a fascination with the Americas. The product of firsthand research conducted during two voyages, over the course of which she traveled, unaccompanied for the most part, to every country in Latin America, including extended periods of time in Argentina, Peru, Ecuador, Cuba, and Mexico. The length of these voyages kept her away from her native Spain for close to 15 years. Serrano de Wilson employs a geographical approach to handling the vast amount of material at her disposal, describing the landscapes, detailing the flora and fauna unique to each place, the indigenous peoples, the European settlers, as well as current politics and literature. She visits haciendas in Brazil and Argentina, hikes the Andes in Ecuador and Chile, collects antiquities in Mexico and beside the shores of Lake Titicaca in Peru...

The impetus for the Enterprise and Student Aspirations in Outer Eastern Melbourne arose from concern about regional sustainability. Previous planning schemes and now Melbourne 2030 have placed definite limits on urban growth in the region; the population tends to be ageing with pockets of socio-economic disadvantage (in the outer areas a high proportion of residents earn less than $300 per week); and the economy is dominated by small and micro business rather than large industry. Residents travel out of the region for work (for example, of the 67,555 employed residents in Yarra Ranges, 44,030 or 65 percent travel out of the Shire for work). There is concern also about the skills and knowledge base of the community. Less than 9 percent of residents have a Bachelor Degree or higher and over half of the population has no post school qualification at all. Based on tertiary application rates and numbers of students who do not complete VCE in the Outer East, we know many students do not aspire to further education. The On Track survey data, collected on the destination of all Victorian Year 12 school leavers, suggest that many students are employed post VCE. However the nature of employment is of concern, given that much of the employment is low skill and perhaps part-time and/or casual in nature. This project is designed to research student education and enterprise career aspirations and student intentions to live and work in the region...

What will South Asia look like in 2025? The optimistic outlook is that India, which accounts for 80 per cent of the regional economic output, is headed towards double-digit growth rates. South Asia too will grow rapidly, primarily due to India. The pessimistic outlook is that, given huge transformational challenges facing the region, growth should not be taken for granted. Which of these two outlooks is likely to prevail? This is what this book is all about. It is about the future, and not the past, and how to make smart choices about the future. There is strong empirical justification in favor of the optimistic outlook. Growth will be propelled higher by young demographics, improved governance, rising middle class, and the next wave of globalization. There is democracy, for the first time since independence, in all countries in the region. Young demographics will result in nearly 20 million more people joining the labour force, every year, for the next two decades. Almost a billion people will join the ranks of the middle class. India's middle class is well-educated, enterprising, innovative, and more demanding of better services, products, and governance. The region will benefit from the new wave of globalization in services, and increased international migration and human mobility. Indeed the drivers of growth seem to have already moved from the rich world to the poor world. The room for catch-up is huge...
