This work intends to analyze the recent appropriation of the expression "marginal literature" for deriving writers of the periphery...

Maria Antónia Lima (Assistant Professor, University of Évora - Portugal) “Evil writers - the obsessive effect of gothic writing” To consider writing as an addictive practice, that leads to obsession and madness, is a point of view from which some gothic writers depart to reflect on the dangerous effects of the creative process, when it becomes a Faustian enterprise that exceeds all its reasonable limits. Gothic fiction involves high levels of ambivalence, which are sometimes translated by a curious similarity between hero and villain, and by a fatal attraction between victim and criminal. A possible identification between the writer and his villain is an important aspect of the ambiguity and transgressive power of gothic narratives. The intention to give gothic fiction a high degree of reality, in order to produce strong emotions, has always been a central motive for many gothic writers. In John Carpenter’s famous film, In the Mouth of Madness (1995), we can find an expert in fantastic literature, Sutter Can, who is able to affect the mental state of his readers by the power of his writing, a special gift that any other author, such as Lovecraft and Stephen King can possess. Jack Torrance in The Shining...

This article analyses the relationship and tensions between cosmopolitanism and particularism in the way in which the subject of exile is broached in the life stories, works and ideas of the Portuguese writers Adolfo Casais Monteiro, Jorge de Sena and Vitor Ramos, and scientists Antonio Aniceto Monteiro, Antonio Brotas, Alfredo Pereira Gomes, José Morgado and Ruy Luis Gomes, who lived in Brazil between 1945 and 1974. The careers and experiences of these individuals were characterised by a way of relating to the world marked by continuous exclusion from the centres of hegemonic power, as well as by the establishment of connections and networks of varying degrees. In this sense, this article also focuses on the personal and collective trajectories of the characters and how it is related to the boundaries of belonging that they established during their lives.

The study is aimed at investigating the occurrence of writers cramp in office workers, drawn from ten major offices of Kanpur to determine the nature and relationship of various emotional factors in the development of this disability. The observations on writers cramp cases were compared with a group of normal and diseased controls. Out of a surveyed population of 3,325 office workers, there were 18 cases of writers cramp. Cramp cases scored significantly higher on all the subscales of Middlesex hospital questionnaire than the diseased and normal controls. Emotional stress of sufficient intensity was recorded in an increased percentage (66.70%) of writers cramp cases as compared to diseased and normal controls (53.3% and 46.7% respectively). The most frequent area of disturbance was severe maladjustment found in 38.9% of writers cramp cases, while in diseased and normal controls the type of stresses were of a different nature.

The purpose of this study was to examine the opinions of medical students and physician writers regarding the medical humanities as a subject and its inclusion in the medical school curriculum. Furthermore, we addressed whether an assessment test should be added to the National Medical Licensing Examination of Korea (KMLE). A total of 192 medical students at Inha University and 39 physician writers registered with the Korean Association of Physician Essayists and the Korean Association of Physician Poets participated in this study. They were asked to answer a series of questionnaires. Most medical students (59%) and all physician writers (100%) answered that the medical humanities should be included in the medical school curriculum to train good physicians. They thought that the KMLE did not currently include an assessment of the medical humanities (medical students 69%, physician writers 69%). Most physician writers (87%; Likert scale, 4.38±0.78) felt that an assessment of the medical humanities should be included in the KMLE. Half of the medical students (51%; Likert scale, 2.51±1.17) were against including it in the KMLE, which they would have to pass after several years of study. For the preferred field of assessment, medical ethics was the most commonly endorsed subject (medical students 59%...

The Victorian Women Writers Project began in 1995 at Indiana University under the editorial leadership of Perry Willett and was celebrated early on for exposing lesser-known British women writers of the 19th century. The VWWP's original focus on poetry was meant to complement The English Poetry Full-Text Database, but soon Willett acknowledged the variety of genres in which women of that period were writing novels, children's books, political pamphlets, religious tracts. The collection expanded to include genres beyond poetry, and continued active development from 1995 until roughly 2000 at which point the corpus reached approximately two hundred texts. These nearly two hundred texts comprise only a small fraction of Victorian women's writing. Encouraged by renewed interest among Indiana University's English faculty and graduate students, the Indiana University Libraries and the English Department are exploring ways to reinvigorate the project, and in turn, cultivate a sensibility in digital humanities methodologies and theories. Through our newly offered graduate English course (L501, Digital Humanities Practicum), an eager and curious group of students learned not only encoding skills but also began to develop the collaborative practices pervasive in the digital humanities. As part of our talk...

The role of food writers has changed - no longer are they concerned only with recipes and lifestyle issues. Today's food writers are faced with writing on a broad scope of topics that stretch from recipes and restaurant through to health, nutrition, and social and ethical eating issues. This study first outlines the professional role and responsibilities of food writers, and then examines the idea that, in a professional capacity, food writers are journalists. As such, food writers are faced with the responsibility of acting in the best interest of the public when they report information on food and food related issues. Yet, unlike their international colleagues, Australian food writers do not have their own code of ethics, although they do have an active professional association, the Food Media Club of Australia. This study identifies the ethical dilemmas faced by the Australian food media, and looks at how they are currently dealing with issues such as accepting junkets, and the idea of food being a subjective topic. It then considers the potential consequences of unethical professional practices by food writers before recommending the development of a professional code of ethics for Australia’s food media. Academic literature on the media and media ethics is considered...

In this paper, I describe the background, rationale and activities of the Asia-Pacific Writing Partnership, a transdisciplinary initiative formed to support writers in the Asia-Pacific region by creating opportunities for writers from the region to further their careers through literary encounters organised with universities and other writers’ organisations in Australia, Asia, the UK, USA and wherever writers can come together to network, develop their skills and promote their work. It seeks to foster links between writers/practitioners in the Creative Writing discipline and scholars of literary theory, cultural studies, translators, post-colonial literary theory and others in and outside the academy. It aims to further stimulate the receptiveness of readers to writing from this the world’s most populous, diverse and creatively dynamic region. As well as facilitating regional and international connections, it serves as a research tool, a virtual laboratory, in which to observe contemporary writing from the ‘margins’ of the so-called World Republic of Letters and to remap such literary world models.; Jane Camens

non-peer reviewed; The aim of the University of Limerick Literary Archive Project was to produce a collection of web-based resources on the work of writers from the Limerick area. A number of the writers which were studied on this project are contemporary. As relatively little has been written about these writers in literary circles the undertaking of this project is validated. This particular project focuses on the work of Limerick-born author Michael Collins.

Dreaming Empire: European Writers in the Fascist Era

This dissertation explores how literary writers from across Western and Central Europe--namely Germany, Italy, Britain and France--invoked Europe's legacy of empire and colonialism in their attempt to come to terms with the specter of fascism. It argues that empire became the site upon which a wide range of writers built their critiques, sometimes overt and other times subvert, against a rising tide of fascist ideology in the 1930s and 1940s. What results is a condemningly critical--and in the case of writers publishing within fascist regimes, outright subversive--reading of fascism. Fascist racial ideology, hyper-militarism, economic policy, absolutist rule and expansionist policies are recurring targets of censure among these writers. By placing empire and fascism into dialogue, their writings not only proffered a powerful critique of fascism but also set into motion a critical rethinking of the project of empire. Uncomfortable affinities between a purportedly benevolent European overseas colonialism and the horrors committed by fascist powers within continental Europe challenged conventional wisdom about the colonial mission civilisatrice at the same time as they offered the raw material for a sustained critique of fascism. From a methodological perspective...

This thesis concerns about the connections with some writers and the Brazil's Communist Party (PCB) in Porto Alegre. Our aims here are to reveal them and further to exploit the link between the communist activity and the literary world in Porto Alegre since 1920 to 1960 taking as a point of departure the trajectory of men and women writers engaged to the communist party. Thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the School of English and Drama, Queen Mary, University of London 2002; This thesis exammes how Winifred Holtby, Storm Jameson, Naomi Mitchison and Rebecca West appropriated the political ideas of the interwar period into their fiction and sought to transform abstract ideals into values with which to judge and improve social life. For all four writers, this pursuit takes the form of showing the complex relations beween theory and practice as experienced by particular individuals. My premise here is the idea that political ideals are based upon the moral principles used by persons to guide their conduct in the pursuit of individual and collective happiness.

The first part of this paper describes Brazilian general book market quantitative data on the period from 2000 to 2009; the second part analyzes the list of best sellers in Brazil on that period, focusing on the presence of Brazilian fiction writers on it. Our analysis points to the conclusion that there is an undeniable quantitative increase on such market but it is not accompanied by innovation. Most titles are world wide best sellers from Anglo-Saxon culture that receive massive publishing campaign and issuing, and represent very little risk to the publishing industry.

The purpose of this paper is to capture and analyze some “portrayals” of the Italian writers Elio Vittorini (1908-1966), Cesare Pavese (1908-1950) and Elsa Morante (1912-1985), present in Italo Calvino’s epistolary, constituted by Lettere 1940-1985 (2001) and I libri degli altri: Lettere 1947-1981 (1991). In advance, we know that these “portrayals” are partial, their dates are the same when compared to the respective letters, some of them multiply more, updating in sequence along the way, some less, as threads that compose the texture of the intellectual and human relationship that Calvino (1923-1985) reveals to have with them. The choice of these three names is justified by the fact that they are some of his main interlocutors (Vittorini and Pavese, strong presences in the Publisher Einaudi of Turin, where Calvino has worked for over thirty years, and Elsa Morante, writer and friend whose career was closely followed by him), with crucial contributions to Calvino’s personal and intellectual life, and, moreover, since this epistolary exchange constitutes a testimony of Italian literary, political, and social life from 1940 to 1985.; http://dx.doi.org/10.5007/2175-7917.2015v20nesp1p32O objetivo deste artigo é capturar e analisar alguns “retratos” dos escritores italianos Elio Vittorini (1908-1966)...

ABSTRACT The article traces the emergence of 'alternative', positive vision of the future of African countries under the rule of female leaders in Kenyan women's literature, using as examples three novels by Kenyan women writers-Rebecca Njau, Margaret Ogola and Monica Genya. The study comes to a conclusion that the aim of these authors was not to create another 'trivial utopia', but to draw a picture of a possible and accomplishable future which may serve as a motivation for the reading public.
