We studied the signaling, territorial, and courtship behaviors of the diurnal frog Hylodes asper. Visual and acoustic communication were used during intraspecific interactions involving males, females. and subadults. Hylodes aspcr has a complex visual communication system, of which foot-flagging is the most distinctive display observed in the repertoire of visual signals. The splash zone produced by the waterfalls and torrents creates a high, nearly constant, humidity near the streams, reducing the risk of desiccation which enables the diurnal activity of H. asper. Although the ambient sound pressure levels (SPL), measured at the calling sites, are similar to the SPL of the advertisement calls, the high-pitched calls of H, asper, are spectrally different from the noise produced by the water current. Thus. The ambient noise produced by the water current may not interfere significantly with the acoustic communication of this species. The noise and the nearly constant and high humidity produced by the torrents and waterfalls, along with the availability of Light, probably favored the evolution of contrasting colors and visual communication in H. asper: Males of H, aspcr excavate underwater chambers that are probably used to shelter the eggs and to prevent the clutch from being drifted downstream.

This work deals with problems involved in computer-mediated communication (CMC). This field has been growing in the context of collaborative learning. Most research efforts has gone into solving textual CMC problems in detriment of the visual communication ones. This is probably because current systems are intended to act in a broad range of fields. On the other side...

Communication through vision involves visual apprenticeship that demands ocular integrity, which results in the importance of the evaluation of visual acuity. The scale of images, formed by optotypes, is a method for the verification of visual acuity in kindergarten children. To identify the optotype the child needs to know the image in analysis. Given the importance of visual communication during the process of construction of the scale of images, one presents a bibliographic, analytical study aiming at thinking about the principles for the construction of those tables. One considers the draw inserted as an optotype as a non-verbal symbolic expression of the body and/or of the environment constructed based on the caption of experiences by the individual. One contests the indiscriminate use of images, for one understands that there must be previous knowledge. Despite the subjectivity of the optotypes, the scales continue valid if one adapts images to those of the universe of the children to be examined.

Four experiments are presented that explore social interactivity in a visually communicating species: the pigeon, Columba livia. A closed-loop teleprompter system was used to isolate, control and manipulate social contingency in a natural courtship interaction. Experiment 1 tested different ways to measure pigeon behaviour and developed an automatic method for measuring the pigeon’s circle walking display using motion energy analysis. In Experiment, 2 the subject’s courtship behaviour towards the video image of an opposite sex partner streamed live (Live), was compared with their behaviour towards a pre-recorded video image of the same partner (Playback). The only difference between the Live and Playback condition was the presence or absence of social contingency. The results showed that pigeons behaved interactively: their behaviour was determined, in part, by the social contingencies between visual signals. To investigate what types of social contingencies are behaviourally relevant, the effects of the partner’s facing direction and the timing of social contingencies on behaviour were investigated in Experiment 3 and 4, respectively. To manipulate partner facing direction, the camera was rotated so that the partner appears to be courting 90° away from the subject. To manipulate social timing...

This thesis will first document how both typography and photography have merged into a pure form of communication: typophoto. Simultaneously, the study will refine the visual parameters for understanding the concept of typophoto through an examination of the works of a number of designers, design movements and visual theories. The final goal of this thesis study will be to explore a new interpretation of typophoto and to extend its use in the new digital era. In 1925, the designer, painter, photographer and film maker Laszl6 Moholy-Nagy first mentioned the concept or theory of typophoto in Malerei Photographic Film. Typophoto was a manifesto of visual communication which closely integrated typography and photography to give an unambiguous message through different planes and media. Exploring typography and photography, Moholy-Nagy sought to understand how both disciplines had been influenced by other art training and how they had developed by means of techniques and time constraints. Furthermore, the idea of typophoto was extended into other fields such as film, where, as a kinetic form of the media, it could interpret the concept of typophoto efficiently (See Appendix A). Today's fast-paced trends and fashions in visual communication require an increased understanding of and accessibility to a complex system of information and media as they move toward 'Motion' or 'Kinetic' art. The designer needs not only to implement the application...

Viewers are surrounded by visual stimuli on a daily basis. These visuals, which may have intriguing and/or exciting qualities, enable designers to propose effective design solutions that could have heightened impact on the viewer. With this in mind, some designers attempt to construct crystal-clear messages that are eye-catching and easily understood, while other designers try to deliver messages enveloped by a planned ambiguity, which offers diverse paths of comprehension. In the end, this intentional ambiguity can eventually guide viewers toward a single understanding. Since ambiguity is an outcome of complex principles related to aesthetic and conceptual decision-making, often it is not immediately understood. However, in order to understand ambiguous messages, viewers are affected by both time, which is the indefinite continued progress of existence and actions in the past, present and future, and timing, which is the choice or control of when something should be exposed. Designers should be aware of the effect of time on perception in relation to ambiguous message-making, especially when immediate understanding is required. An example of this would be a solution related to information design such as the transportation map of the London Underground...

This paper is the consensus of a workshop that critically evaluated the utility and problems of video playbacks as stimuli in studies of visual behavior. We suggest that video playback is probably suitable for studying motion, shape, texture, size, and brightness. Studying color is problematic because video systems are specifically designed for humans. Any difference in color perception must lead to a different color sensation in most animals. Another potentially problematic limitation of video images is that they lack depth cues derived from stereopsis, accommodation, and motion parallax. Nonetheless, when used appropriately, video playback allows an unprecedented range of questions in visual communication to be addressed. It is important to note that most of the potential limitations of video playback are not unique to this technique but are relevant to all studies of visual signaling in animals.

We studied the signaling, reproductive and courtship behaviors of the diurnal stream-dwelling frog Hylodes dactylocinus. The repertoire of visual signals of H. dactylocinus includes foot-flagging, leg-stretching, body movements, and toe-wiggling. The visual signals are performed only by males and are used to defend territories against intruders and to attract females. Home range size varied from 0.12 to 13.12 m² for males (N = 44), and from 0.45 to 7.98 m² for females (N = 24); residency time varied from one to 12 months for males, and from two to 10 months for females. During the courtship of H. dactylocinus the male gives an encounter call towards an approaching female, touches her snout, and guides her to a previously dug nest. After oviposition, the female leaves the nest and returns to her own home range; the male remains calling after concealing the nest entrance.

In the early 1960’s, the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism from the University of São Paulo, while revamping its guideline, added Industrial Design and Visual Communication to the curriculum. The discipline Industrial Design has already been studied and recorded, but Visual Communication has not. Aiming at the historic rescue of the exercises given and the didactic employed in these disciplines, we interviewed former teachers and former students and analyzed some available documents of the period. We concluded that the Visual Communication Sequence´s exercises and classes provided to the trainees the development of technical and creative skills. The result was that graduates during this period had included Visual Communication in their field of expertise, applications in graphic design projects of any size or in architectural and urban planning projects.; No início dos anos 1960, a Faculdade de Arquitetura e Urbanismo da Universidade de São Paulo, ao reformular seu ensino, acrescentou à matriz curricular as disciplinas Desenho Industrial e Comunicação Visual.
