This paper presents a second version of the 3DSkyView extension. The purpose of that extension was to develop a calculation algorithm for assessment and visualization of sky view factors (SVF), by means of tools available in a Geographical Information System (GIS). The sky view factor is a thermal and geometric parameter pointed out in the specialized literature as one of the main causes of urban heat islands. A 3D-GIS is a powerful tool for reaching the goal of this research because it allows the storage, treatment and analysis of tri-dimensional urban data, in addition to a high level of flexibility for incorporating calculation algorithms. The objective in the 3DSkyView extension is to optimize the determination of that factor, not only reducing its demanding calculation and graphical representation time, but also generating a simplified tool for replacing expensive photographic equipment usually applied on this matter. Enhancing functions of ArcView GIS 3.2, the first version of that extension showed a very good performance allowing the automatic delineation and determination of SVF. That performance was although limited for a single observer point. The simulation of SVF for several view points in urban canyons was only possible by applying the extension as many times as the number of observers needed. Therefore...

This paper presents a Geographic Information System (GIS) 3D extension that is a tool to simulate the representation of sky view factors (SVF) while calculating their values. The sky view factor (SVF) is a climatological parameter used to characterize radiation properties on urban areas and to express the relationship between the visible area of the sky and the portion of the sky covered by buildings viewed from a specific point of observation. The implementation of this tool in a 3D GIS is useful not only because it allows straight and quick urban geometry analysis from several points of observation, but also because it can help to predict sky view factors due to future buildings without the usual associated costs of cameras and image processing. The algorithm was developed by applying the software ArcView GIS1 and its 3D Analyst extension, allowing an automatic delineation of the visible sky and obstructions.

The sky view factor indicates the relationship between the visible area of the sky and the area covered by urban structures. A method of sky view factors (SVF) estimation for urban analysis was developed and implemented in a Geographical Information System (GIS). In order to validate this tool, this paper presents a comparison of actual SVF with the results obtained by simulating the SVF in particular areas of a medium sized city with the developed tool. The simulation with this tool pointed out many advantages, such as: reliability; flexibility and ability to predict sky view factors in future scenarios.

The knowledge-based view of the firm is a recent extension of the Resource-Based View (RBV) of the firm and provides a strong theoretical underpinning for the organisation learning and intellectual capital researchers. Knowledge is considered to be a special strategic resource that does not depreciate in the way traditional economic productive factors do. The nature of most knowledge-based resources is mainly intangible and dynamic, allowing for idiosyncratic development through path dependency and causal ambiguity, which are the basis of the mechanism for economic rent creation in the Knowledge-Based View (KBV) of the firm. Future implications that emerge from these characteristics as they relate to learning organisations are presented at the end of the paper.

Multi-view 3D displays are preferable to other stereoscopic display technologies because they provide autostereoscopic viewing from any viewpoint without special glasses. However, they require a large number of pixels to achieve high image quality. Therefore, data compression is a major issue for this approach. In this paper, we present a framework for efficient compression of multi-view video streams for multi-view 3D displays. Our goal is to optimize image quality without increasing the required data bandwidth. We achieve this by taking into account a precise notion of the multi-dimensional display bandwidth. The display bandwidth implies that scene elements that appear at a given distance from the display become increasingly blurry as the distance grows. Our main contribution is to enhance conventional multi-view compression pipelines with an additional pre-filtering step that bandlimits the multi-view signal to the display bandwidth. This imposes a shallow depth of field on the input images, thereby removing high frequency content. We show that this pre-filtering step leads to increased image quality compared to state-of-the-art multi-view coding at equal bitrate. We present results of an extensive user study that corroborate the benefits of our approach. Our work suggests that display pre-filtering will be a fundamental component in signal processing for 3D displays...

Object recognition accuracy can be improved when information frommultiple views is integrated, but information in each view can oftenbe highly redundant. We consider the problem of distributed objectrecognition or indexing from multiple cameras, where thecomputational power available at each camera sensor is limited andcommunication between sensors is prohibitively expensive. In thisscenario, it is desirable to avoid sending redundant visual featuresfrom multiple views, but traditional supervised feature selectionapproaches are inapplicable as the class label is unknown at thecamera. In this paper we propose an unsupervised multi-view featureselection algorithm based on a distributed compression approach. With our method, a Gaussian Process model of the joint viewstatistics is used at the receiver to obtain a joint encoding of theviews without directly sharing information across encoders. Wedemonstrate our approach on recognition and indexing tasks withmulti-view image databases and show that our method comparesfavorably to an independent encoding of the features from eachcamera.

The pressure for a new pattern of sustainable development began to require of modern organizations the conciliation between competitiveness and a environmental protection. In this sense, a tool that acts in the implementation of structured strategies is the Environmental Management System (EMS), which focuses on improving environmental performance. This improvement, in turn, can generate to the organizations many benefits , among which, obtaining competitive advantages, susceptible of measurement from different perspectives. One of these is the application of VRIO model, reasoned by the Resource-Based View (RBV), which considers that differences between companies occurs due to differences between its internal resources and capabilities. However, although was been found some studies in the literature that evaluate the competitive potential of certain organizations , such assessments are not performed on specific objects, like the SEM s. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the resources and capabilities (environmental strategies) adopted by the SGA of the Verdegreen Hotel, identifying which of these have the potential to generate competitive advantage. For this, this exploratory-descriptive character study and delineated as field research and case study was used as data collection tools: a literature survey...

Two-view methods have been well developed to identify human actions. However, in a case where the corresponding imaged points cannot induce distinguished measures, the performance of the methods deteriorates. For this reason, we propose a new view-invariant measure for human action recognition by enforcing tri-view constraints in this paper. This new measurement method can be tolerant to different rates of human actions and the anthropometric proportions. We apply our approach to video synchronization by imposing both the similarity ratio and the consistency in the trifocal tensor over entire video sequences. By testing on both synthetic and real data, our method has achieved higher tolerance to noise levels, as well as higher identification accuracy than the traditional two-view method. Experimental results demonstrate that our approach can identify human pose transitions, in spite of dynamic time-lines, different viewpoints and unknown camera parameters.; Yang Wang, Lin Wu, Xiaodi Huang, and Xuemin Lin

We distinguish two general approaches to inner speech (IS)???the ???format??? and the ???activity??? views???and defend the activity view. The format view grounds the utility of IS on features of the representational format of language, and is related to the thesis that the proper function of IS is to make conscious thinking possible. IS appears typically as a product constituted by representations of phonological features. The view also has implications for the idea that passivity phenomena in cognition may be misattributed IS. The activity view sees IS as a speaking activity that does not have a proper function in cognition. It simply inherits the array of functions of outer speech. We argue that it is methodologically advisable to start from this variety of uses, which suggests commonalities between internal and external activities. The format view has several problems; it has to deny ???unsymbolized thinking???; it cannot easily explain how IS makes thoughts available to consciousness, and it cannot explain those uses of IS where its format features apparently play no role. The activity view not only lacks these problems but also has explanatory advantages: construing IS as an activity allows it to be integrally constituted by its content; the view is able to construe unsymbolized thinking as part of a continuum of phenomena that exploit the same mechanisms...

ABSTRACTINTRODUCTION:Flexible fiber optic bronchoscopy is a valuable intervention for evaluation and management of respiratory diseases in both infants, pediatric and adult patients. The aim of this study is to investigate the influence of the airway supporting maneuvers on glottis view during pediatric flexible fiberoptic bronchoscopy.MATERIALS AND METHODS:In this randomized, controlled, crossover study; patients aged between 0 and 15 years who underwent flexible fiberoptic bronchoscopy procedure having American Society of Anesthesiologists I---II risk score were included. Patients having risk of difficult intubation, intubated or patients with tracheostomy, and patients with reduced neck mobility or having cautions for neck mobility were excluded from this study. After obtaining best glottic view at the neutral position, patients were positioned jaw trust with open mouth, jaw trust with teeth prottution, head tilt chin lift and triple airway maneuvers and best glottis scores were recorded.RESULTS:Total of 121 pediatric patients, 57 girls and 64 boys, were included in this study. Both jaw trust with open mouth and jaw trust with teeth prottution maneuvers improved the glottis view compared with neutral position (p < 0.05), but we did not observe any difference between jaw trust with open mouth and jaw trust with teeth prottution maneuvers (p > 0.05). Head tilt chin lift and triple airway maneuvers improved glottis view when compared with both jaw trust with open mouth and jaw trust with teeth prottution maneuvers and neutral position (p < 0.05); however we found no differences between head tilt chin lift and triple airway maneuvers (p > 0.05).

The Simple View of Reading is a theoretical model that explains reading comprehension as a product of listening comprehension – the process and ability to understand information by listening – and decoding – the ability to make a letter-sound correspondence to process written information (Gough & Tunmer, 1986). The present study uses the Simple View of Reading model to explore reading comprehension in two different second language-learning groups – the first group from a Core French background (n=16) and the second group from a French Immersion background (n=19). These are both adult groups who completed initial programming in French as a Second Language in secondary school and were studying French at the university level. The Simple View of Reading has often been used to predict reading comprehension outcomes for children from both first language settings and second or foreign language settings. The present study seeks to compare the skills associated with the Simple View of Reading within the two aforementioned groups, the first of which did not receive as much French instruction as the second (compare 600 hours to 3800 hours by end of high school for each respective group; Ministry of Education, 2013a). This study fills the gaps in research by using a sample of adult participants in a Canadian context that looks specifically at how two different French programming backgrounds both lead to the development of reading skills and the way in which reading comprehension is accounted for by three essential aspects – listening comprehension...

The General Point of View: Love and Moral Approval in Hume's Ethics

Hume thinks moral judgments are based on sentiments of approval and disapproval we feel when we contemplate someone from a “general point of view.” But why do we take up the general point of view? Hume argues that we take up the general point of view in order to avoid contradictions in our moral judgments, but this argument does not work because we do not make moral judgments until we take up the general point of view. This chapter proposes a different account. Hume argues that approval is a calm form of love, love of character, which sets a normative standard for other forms of love. The chapter argues that character, as a form of causality, is constructed from the general point of view. We take up the general view to view people as agents with characters, that is, as possible objects of love.; Philosophy
