There is a wide range of telecommunications services that transmit voice, video and data through complex transmission networks and in some cases, the service has not an acceptable quality level for the end user. In this sense the study of methods for assessing video quality and voice have a very important role. This paper presents a classification scheme, based on different criteria, of the methods and metrics that are being studied in recent years. This paper presents how the video quality is affected by degradation in the transmission channel in two kinds of services: Digital TV (ISDB-TB) due the fading in the air interface and video streaming service on an IP network due packet loss. For Digital TV tests was set up a scenario where the digital TV transmitter is connected to an RF channel emulator, where are inserted different fading models and at the end, the videos are saved in a mobile device. The tests of streaming video were performed in an isolated scenario of IP network, which are scheduled several network conditions, resulting in different qualities of video reception. The video quality assessment is performed using objective assessment methods: PSNR, SSIM and VQM. The results show how the losses in the transmission channel affects the quality of end-user experience on both services studied.

Atualmente existe uma grande variedade de serviços de telecomunicações focados na transmissão de voz, vídeo e dados através de redes complexas, embora, em muitos casos, o usuário final não seja atendido com um nível de qualidade aceitável. Neste trabalho, se avalia como o serviço de streaming de vídeo em uma rede com protocolo Internet (IP) pode ser afetado por uma condição adversa da rede, tal como a variação de atraso (jitter). São mostrados os resultados de avaliações objetivas e subjetivas de streaming de vídeo que indicam que a qualidade de vídeo é diretamente afetada por fatores de degradação da rede IP como a variação de atraso de pacotes. Além disso, se verifica que cenas de maior movimento também são mais afetadas pela variação de atraso. Para a realização dos testes, utiliza-se um cenário de emulação de rede isolado, no qual são parametrizadas diferentes condições de rede. Assim, no canal de transmissão são configurados diversos valores de variação de atraso, obtendo-se uma Base de Dados de vídeos com diferentes graus de degradação de qualidade. Atualmente existem inúmeros serviços multimídia que são transportados através da rede IP, dos quais, o tráfego dos serviços de vídeo experimentou um maior crescimento nos últimos anos. O sucesso de aplicações de streaming de vídeo é um dos fatores pelo qual, este tráfego se incrementou. Alguns recentes estudos projetam que este tipo de serviços no ano 2016, alcançará aproximadamente o 55% do tráfego total da Internet. Considerando a importância que os serviços de vídeo alcançarão nos próximos anos, este trabalho foca-se na avaliação da qualidade de experiência (QoE) dos usuários ao utilizar estes serviços. Assim, nesta tese é proposta uma métrica de avaliação de vídeo denominada eVsQM, do inglês enhanced Video streaming Quality Metric, a qual é baseada principalmente no número, duração e localização temporal dos congelamentos de imagens (pausas) durante uma transmissão de vídeo, considerando também o tipo de conteúdo do vídeo transmitido. Nowadays the internet is associated with many services. Combined with this fact, there is a marked increase of the users joining this service. In this perspective, it is required that the service providers guarantee a minimum quality to the network services. The Quality of Experience of services is quite crucial in the development of services in networks. Also noteworthy, the tra c increase in multimedia services, including video streaming, increases the probability of congesting the networks. In the perspective of the service provider, the monitoring is a solution to avoid saturation in network. This way, this dissertation proposes to develop a platform that allows a multimedia tra c monitoring in the Meo Go service provided by the operator Portugal Telecom Communications. The architecture of the adaptive streaming over HTTP has been studied and tested to obtain the quality of experience metrics. This adaptive streaming technique presents the smooth streaming, an architecture made by Microsoft company, and it is used in the Meo Go service. Internet video streaming places new demands on source coding and network transport algorithms. The challenge is to deliver compressed video packets before their play-out deadline, despite of varying throughput, packet delay, and loss. This problem has to be solved in a way that simultaneously maximizes the video quality at the streaming client, meets transmission rate limitations, and satisfies latency constraints. The most significant recent advance in streaming technology is the emergence of rate-distortion optimized streaming techniques that take into account packet importance and knowledge about the channel in a Lagrange rate-distortion cost function J = D + lambdaR. The research in this thesis aims to overcome the current limitations in rate-distortion optimized packet scheduling, such that these techniques can be applied to a broader range of streaming problems, and a better end-to-end performance can be achieved. A recording is not available for this presentation.; The IUB Libraries Video Streaming Service received its soft launch in the Fall 2008 semester, allowing staff in Wells Library Media and Reserve Services to make both locally-digitized video and digital video files licensed from vendors available for online streaming by members of the IU community. This service was developed by the Digital Library Program in consultation with Media and Reserve Services, based in part upon previous pilots and prototypes supported by both DLP and Library Information Technology. In this presentation, we will demonstrate the functionality of the Video Streaming Service both from the perspective of a student or faculty member viewing a video and a library staff member loading a new video into the system. We will then discuss the technologies used to implement the service, including Adobe Flash Media Server, theffmpeg audio/video encoder, and locally-developed video drop box, content management, and workflow tools.

Digital video data, stored in video databases and distributed through communication networks, is subject to various kinds of distortions during acquisition, compression, processing, transmission, and reproduction. Video quality is a characteristic of a video passed through a video transmission/processing system, a formal or informal measure of perceived video degradation (typically, compared to the original video). The impact of encoding and transmission impairments on the perceptual quality video streams is quite complex and depends heavily on the codec type and configuration, and on end system characteristics. The goal of this project is to implement a Matlab model to simulate video degradation in streaming over optical network influenced by networks parameters (delay, jitter, error probability, bandwidth,etc). To achieve it, we needed to make several tasks summarized in the following paragraph. This model is useful to observe how network parameters affects in video quality and how much. For example, estimating error probability, delay and jitter in a specific network, with this model we can forecast if that network will satisfy requirements to perform video streaming. We can also observe which parameter is more important to take into account in video streaming or what threshold in each network parameter we can set to have an acceptable video quality. First of all, we needed documentation about how video streaming is implemented (protocols, MPEG compression), and how network parameters affect in packets losses. After that, we had to investigate how these losses affect different frames in MPEG compression. Later, we implemented a video model following these rules. Current trends on traffic growth oversee a steady increase of video streaming services, and the subsequent development of the associated infrastructure to allocate and distribute such contents. One of the operational costs associated to this infrastructure is the power bill. Therefore any mechanism used to decrease it, reducing also the carbon footprint associated to it, is welcome. In this work we investigate the suitability of the recently standardized IEEE 802.3az Energy Efficient Ethernet (EEE) for video traffic generated by video-streaming servers. In a multicast video streaming service the same multimedia content is sent to a mass audience using only one multicast stream. In multicast video streaming over a cellular network, due to the nature of the multicast communication, from a source to multiple recipients, and due to the characteristics of the radio channel, different for each receiver, transmission errors are addressed at the application level by using Forward Error Correction (FEC) techniques. However, in order to protect the communication over the radio channel, FEC techniques are also applied at the physical layer. Another important technique to improve the communication of the radio channel is the use of a single-frequency network. The past decade has witnessed tremendous growth of peer-to-peer (P2P) video streaming applications on the Internet. For these applications, playback smoothness and timeliness are the two most important aspects of users' viewing experiences, whereas the amount of traffic is Internet service providers' main concern. According to the playback delay, video streaming can be classified into on-demand streaming, live streaming, and interactive streaming. P2P live streaming applications typically have an arbitrary number of users, tens of seconds of playback delay, and a high packet delivery rate, but their heavy traffic incurs great financial expenditure and threatens the quality of other services. Interactive streaming applications usually have a small group size, several hundreds of milliseconds of playback delay, and reasonable traffic volume, but cannot achieve a high packet delivery rate. There is a wide range of video services over complex transmission networks, and in some cases end users fail to receive an acceptable quality level. In this paper, the different factors that degrade users' quality of experience (QoE) in video streaming service that use TCP as transmission protocol are studied. In this specific service, impairment factors are: number of pauses, their duration and temporal location. In order to measure the effect that each temporal segment has in the overall video quality, subjective tests. Because current subjective test methodologies are not adequate to assess video streaming over TCP, some recommendations are provided here. At the application layer, a customized player is used to evaluate the behavior of player buffer, and consequently, the end user QoE. Video subjective test results demonstrate that there is a close correlation between application parameters and subjective scores. Based on this fact, a new metrics named VsQM is defined, which considers the importance of temporal location of pauses to assess the user QoE of video streaming service. We consider the problem of simultaneous on-demand streaming of stored video to multiple users in a multi-cell wireless network where multiple unicast streaming sessions are run in parallel and share the same frequency band. Each streaming session is formed by the sequential transmission of video "chunks," such that each chunk arrives into the corresponding user playback buffer within its playback deadline. We formulate the problem as a Network Utility Maximization (NUM) where the objective is to fairly maximize users' video streaming Quality of Experience (QoE) and then derive an iterative control policy using Lyapunov Optimization, which solves the NUM problem up to any level of accuracy and yields an online protocol with control actions at every iteration decomposing into two layers interconnected by the users' request queues : i) a video streaming adaptation layer reminiscent of DASH, implemented at each user node; ii) a transmission scheduling layer where a max-weight scheduler is implemented at each base station. Video streaming applications have newly attracted a large number of participants in a distribution network. Traditional client-server based video streaming solutions sustain precious bandwidth provision rate on the server. Recently, several P2P streaming systems have been organized to provide on-demand and live video streaming services on the wireless network at reduced server cost. Peer-to-Peer (P2P) computing is a new pattern to construct disseminated network applications. Typical error control techniques are not very well matched and on the other hand error prone channels has increased greatly for video transmission e.g., over wireless networks and IP. These two facts united together provided the essential motivation for the development of a new set of techniques (error concealment) capable of dealing with transmission errors in video systems. In this paper, we propose an flexible multiple description coding method named as Flexible Spatial-Temporal (FST) which improves error resilience in the sense of frame loss possibilities over independent paths. It introduces combination of both spatial and temporal concealment technique at the receiver and to conceal the lost frames more effectively. Today, the technology for video streaming over the Internet is converging towards a paradigm named HTTP-based adaptive streaming (HAS). HAS comes with two unique flavors. First, by riding on top of HTTP/TCP, it leverages the network-friendly TCP to achieve firewall/NATS traversal and bandwidth sharing. Second, by pre-encoding and storing the video in a number of discrete bitrate levels, it introduces video bitrate adaptivity in a scalable way that the video encoding is excluded from the closed-loop adaptation. A conventional wisdom is that the TCP throughput observed by a HAS client indicates the available network bandwidth, thus can be used as a reliable reference for the video bitrate selection. We argue that this no longer holds true when HAS becomes a substantial fraction of the Internet traffic. We show that when multiple HAS clients compete at a network bottleneck, the presence of competing clients and the discrete nature of the video bitrates would together create confusion for a client to correctly perceive its fair-share bandwidth. Through analysis and real experiments, we demonstrate that this fundamental limitation would lead to, for example, video rate oscillation that negatively impacts the video watching experiences. Two main trends in today's internet are of major interest for video streaming services: most content delivery platforms coincide towards using adaptive video streaming over HTTP and new network architectures allowing caching at intermediate points within the network. We investigate one of the most popular streaming service in terms of rate adaptation and opportunistic caching. Our experimental study shows that the streaming client's rate selection trajectory, i.e., the set of selected segments of varied bit rates which constitute a complete video, is not repetitive across separate downloads. Also, the involvement of caching could lead to frequent alternation between cache and server when serving back client's requests for video segments. These observations warrant cautions for rate adaption algorithm design and trigger our analysis to characterize the performance of in-network caching for HTTP streaming. Our analytic results show: (i) a significant degradation of cache hit rate for adaptive streaming, with a typical file popularity distribution in nowadays internet; (ii) as a result of the (usually) higher throughput at the client-cache connection compared to client-server one, cache-server oscillations due to misjudgments of the rate adaptation algorithm occur. Wireless Ad hoc Network is promising in solving many challenging real-world communication problems. Examples of these are: military field operation, emergency response system, and oil drilling and mining operation. However, the wide deployment of this type of network is still a challenging task. It is very difficult to manage quality of services for real time applications like video transmission over mobile nodes. Mobile ad hoc networks are not so resilient and reliable because of their dynamic topology due to the mobile nodes and impact of environmental circumstances. However, it provides multiple routes from the source to the destination, which gives extra redundancy for video and data transmission. In this research work, I will analyze the effect of real video streaming in virtual simulation environment using mobile ad hoc network, terrain modeling module and the System-in-the-loop modules from the OPNET modeling tool.

Video streaming over the Internet has gained significant popularity during the last years, and the academy and industry have realized a great research effort in this direction. In this scenario, scalable video coding (SVC) has emerged as an important video standard to provide more functionality to video transmission and storage applications. This paper proposes and evaluates two strategies based on scalable video coding for P2P video streaming services. In the first strategy, SVC is used to offer differentiated quality video to peers with heterogeneous capacities. The second strategy uses SVC to reach a homogeneous video quality between different videos from different sources. The obtained results show that our proposed strategies enable a system to improve its performance and introduce benefits such as differentiated quality of video for clients with heterogeneous capacities and variable network conditions.

Gracias a la evolución permanente de los algoritmos de codificación de video, la televisión digital ha encontrado un prometedor medio de transmisión a través de Internet. En este artículo, se analiza el desempeño de los codificadores comerciales: RealNetworks, Apple y VC-1 (Microsoft) con tecnología de video afluente (video streaming), todos estos basados en los estándares MPEG-4 y AVC/H.264. Estos codificadores representan hoy día la solución para la difusión de la televisión digital a través de la red IP. Después de presentar el esquema general de la tecnología de video afluente, se analiza el desempeño de algunos códecs en función del PSNR de la componente de luminancia (PSNR-YYUV) y compresión del video con relación a la velocidad binaria de transmisión.
