The traditional architecture is founded as a defining element of the identity of a region, and its essence should be preserved and conserved by means of maintenance and recovery actions. Thus, the best solutions and proposals for intervention should be looked for but this doesn’t imply a back to back innovation and at construction progress. This work includes the description of techniques for maintenance and conservation of bioclimatic solutions found and inventoried in the north of the Iberian Peninsula, with special focus on a unique bioclimatic solution known as Sunspace, whose main advantage is to contribute significantly to the improvement of the thermal performance of buildings. It is also important to recover the historical heritage in a sustainable manner, allowing it to become an engine of development for both urban and small rural centres that exist in the periphery of the bigger cities.

This architectural characteristic is based on the building’s solar exposure, predominant winds and geographical and topographic conditions.

Vernacular architecture is characterized by formally expressing several constraints – geographical, climatic and economic – from the places where it is. In its plurality, it manifests several constraints from places and communities who built and inhabit them. Those constraints are reflected in regional differentiation of the strategies used to mitigate the climate effects. Portugal, despite the small size of the country, is profuse in these manifestations of architecture. The strategies adopted in these buildings have potential to evolve and to be adapted to contemporaneity. Future should seek to integrate tradition and modernity, in order to explore new aesthetics and functional buildings. In this sense, Portuguese vernacular architecture has a knowledge that matters to be studied and classified from a sustainability point of view. When world seeks for cleaner energy and more sustainable buildings, it is pertinent to revisit the past in order to understand these forms of construction intrinsic to places, shaped over the time to deal with scarce resources.

The presence of wood in structural applications in construction was constant in Portugal until the end of the XIXth and early XXth centuries. Wood was used since the first constructions when the available resources were scarce and it continues to be present in vernacular buildings and areas whose heritage value requires their preservation. The wood as a structural material is now uncommon in residential buildings in Portugal. It often appears as partial constructive element (particularly in roof structures and floors) and occasionally as integral constructive element. In the latter case, on the vast majority of situations, it appears as a culturally decontextualized constructive system since it lost any connection with traditional solutions using wood.

Dissertação de mestrado em Construção e Reabilitação Sustentáveis; The vernacular architecture features, in a particular way, a plurality of constraints — geographical, geological, economical and cultural — from the places where it is. The constraints of each region were materialized in unique and diverse ways of building between them. In common they have the fact that they were parsimonious evolutions, empirically refined over generations. In its long evolution, and inserted in a context of scarcity, tpeoplehey developed pragmatic strategies of adaptation to the environment and of profound rationalization of the available resources. Nothing was preferred, passed over or ignored because communities had the empiric notion that their welfare depended intrinsically from the balance with their surroundings. However, these architectural approaches were abandoned, and the inherent knowledge lost, driven by the pejorative connotations that relate it with underdevelopment, both in materials as in lifestyles. Industrialization homogenized the different ways to build and propelled the spread of a universal architecture, disconnected from its environment, heavily dependent on energy and resource consumption. In this sense, at the moment when society seeks for cleaner energy and more sustainable buildings...

For a long time, reactive seismic retrofitting was focused on monumental heritage and very little on vernacular architecture. In the last years, there has been a growing interest on seismic resistant design and solutions and several research units emerged to produce important research in the scientific field. However, for some time, international focus to address earthquake-damaged buildings was on intrusive techniques and technological materials to retrofit monuments. This paper aims to explore how the research project SEISMIC-V intends to fill the gap regarding this critical research problem. The research will contribute to the awareness and protection of the local seismic culture. The project outcomes will provide data for the strengthening of seismic-resistant architectural components in in-use vernacular heritage.; Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT)

Specific architectural elements can be identified in vernacular constructions located in regions frequently exposed to earthquakes. Such elements are the result of a seismic culture which has been empirically developed during centuries so that the vulnerability of the buildings is reduced. This research is based on the fact that vernacular architecture may bear important lessons on hazard mitigation. Traditional earthquake resistant technologies can be successfully applied to preserve and retrofit surviving examples without prejudice for its identity. Few papers have focused on strengthening solutions emerging from vernacular architectural heritage. Research is particularly focused on case studies in Portugal where traces of Local Seismic Culture have been identified and documented through direct visual inspection, published information and local narratives. The main goal of this study is the identification and understanding of traditional construction solutions and detailing that, in many cases, have shown to improve the seismic performance of vernacular constructions.; Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT)

Vernacular architecture is characterised by a type of formal expression that has been developed in response to a number of factors â climatic, lithologic, cultural and economic â characterising the local area or region. In its various forms, a range of techniques has been employed in different regions to mitigate the effects of climate. Despite the fact that Portugal is a small country, it has a territory full of contrasts, which gave origin to many different architectural manifestations. The approaches adopted in the design and construction of vernacular buildings have the potential for further development and could be adapted in response to contemporary needs. In the future, a blend of tradition and modernity should be aimed at in order to develop a new form of aesthetics and functional construction. Portuguese vernacular architecture is associated with a fund of valuable knowledge that should be studied and aligned with the principles of sustainability. In this paper, is presented the climatic contrast between the northern and southern parts of Portugal and the relation with the purpose of different passive solar techniques used in vernacular architecture to provide comfort. The focus is on the effectiveness of passive cooling techniques (e.g. high thermal inertia...

This paper refers to earth solutions in Portugal, covering from a synthesis of vernacular examples to a contemporary approach suggested by the author. This approach consists on a non structural earth wall solution, using a conventional steel reinforced concrete structure in order to permit earth walls to be used both in single-storey as in multi-storey buildings and be accepted in fulfilling contemporary demands of structural and functional performance. A thermal zoning strategy with two distinct inertia areas was proposed to the north littoral of Portugal. An indirect heat gain heavyweight compartment - made with earth walls and steel reinforced concrete structure and slabs - was positioned on the south zone and conceived to lodge the resting zones of a house: bedrooms, bathroom and living room. The north compartment, made with lightweight materials - plaster board and fibre-cement panel walls and timber structure - was destined for the working areas: studying, cooking and eating. This zoning strategy allowed a good compromise between construction costs (mainly embodied energy on the present analysis) and operative costs (mainly thermal comfort on the present analysis) comparing to a conventional monozone layout solution using the Portuguese conventional hollow brick and steel reinforced concrete constructive system. Both solutions were tested on real scale test cells...

This paper deals with the vernacular settlements that often exist in the fringes of urban centres and their adaptations and absorptions within the expansions of the urban regions. In many parts of the world, the processes of urban expansions that began with the industrial revolution often led to the integration of rural settlements previously located in the outer rings of cities through adaptations that naturally took place at that time. In the recent decades however, this has become more arbitrary and in many cases have led to the loss of value of agricultural land, vernacular settlements and buildings of significant heritage values. Antagonisms have developed between the urban and rural areas and the value of vernacular settings have played little role in urban metropolitan planning. Studies of such situations can reveal how vernacular buildings and hamlets could be integrated to urban areas with appropriate development techniques. In such situations, the rural vernacular buildings and settings need to be protected; enabling them to acquire in the diffuse cities the significance that the historic centers achieved in the traditional compact cities, especially in the second half of the twentieth century. In fact, if the conventional antagonism between city and country had become less significant...

This thesis explores how architecture can adapt local vernacular design principles to contemporary building design in a rural setting. Vernacular buildings in Guyana present a unique and coherent set of design principles developed in response to climatic and cultural conditions. The concept of “habitus” proposed by philosopher Pierre Bourdieu describing the evolving nature of social culture was used to interpret Guyanese local buildings. These principles were then applied to the design of a Women’s Center in the village of Port Mourant on the east coast of Guyana. The design specifically interpreted the “bottom-house” of local Guyanese architecture, an inherently flexible transitional outdoor space beneath raised buildings. The design of the Women’s Center demonstrates how contemporary architectural design can respond to climatic requirements, local preferences and societal needs to support the local culture.

Considering that vernacular architecture may bear important lessons on hazard mitigation and that well-constructed examples showing traditional seismic resistant features can present far less vulnerability than expected, this study aims at understanding the resisting mechanisms and seismic behavior of vernacular buildings through detailed finite element modeling and nonlinear static (pushover) analysis. This paper focuses specifically on a type of vernacular rammed earth constructions found in the Portuguese region of Alentejo. Several rammed earth constructions found in the region were selected and studied in terms of dimensions, architectural layout, structural solutions, construction materials and detailing and, as a result, a reference model was built, which intends to be a simplified representative example of these constructions, gathering the most common characteristics. Different parameters that may affect the seismic response of this type of vernacular constructions have been identified and a numerical parametric study was defined aiming at evaluating and quantifying their influence in the seismic behavior of this type of vernacular buildings. This paper is part of an ongoing research which includes the development of a simplified methodology for assessing the seismic vulnerability of vernacular buildings...

Rammed earth is one of the oldest building materials in the world and is present in the Portugal with a particular focus in the South of the country. The mechanical properties and the structural behaviour of rammed earth constructions have been the subject of study of many researchers in the recent years. This study is part of a broader research on vernacular seismic culture in Portugal. Numerical analyses were carried out on a rammed earth masonry construction representative of the vernacular heritage of Alentejo region. Variations in the geometry, constructive characteristics and material properties were implemented and the main conclusions of the non-linear static and modal analysis are presented. Analysing the damage framework allowed interpreting the weaknesses of this type of constructions and consider the most appropriate reinforcement methodologies.

Following detailed studies of Portuguese vernacular building typologies, this paper deals with buildings located in historical urban centres. An analysis of the history of the urban centre and, in particular, of some vernacular buildings is enhanced. Additionally, a discussion on the influence of changes of the geometry, and on added built volumes to original buildings in the seismic vulnerability of the buildings is also provided.
