Distance education has emerged to minimize the anxiety of many professionals who need to update their knowledge, but do not have the time and opportunity to travel to educational centers. Objectives: To describe the development of a CD-ROM to provide distance continuing education to basic school teachers that addresses issues related to written language. Material and Methods: Previously, a script was developed with themes related to the acquisition and development of written language. Subsequently, a technical team transformed the texts in multimedia language. Results: The titles of each content area addressed are available on buttons and links. The files can be viewed in a linear sequence, allowing the teacher to start learning at the desired moment and go straight to the file that he or she wants to access. Videos that show practical applications of the concepts available in text are included. Conclusions: Brazil is a developing country. The use of technologies for education reduces cultural isolation among education professionals. It is necessary to focus on making teaching materials for distance education. In order to provide an effective learning environment, the learners reality should be considered. A multidisciplinary team should prepare the materials. The development of educational material for distance education on the acquisition and development of written language seems not only appropriate...

The purpose of this study was to assess the epidemiology of imported malaria in Taiwan between 2002 and 2013. We analyzed the national data recorded by the Taiwan Centers for Disease Control (Taiwan CDC). Malaria cases were diagnosed by blood films, polymerase chain reaction, or rapid diagnostic tests. The risk of re-establishment of malarial transmission in Taiwan was assessed. A total of 229 malaria cases were included in our analysis. All of the cases were imported. One hundred and ninety-two cases (84%) were diagnosed within 13 days of the start of symptoms/signs; 43% of these cases were acquired in Africa and 44% were acquired in Asia. Plasmodium falciparum was responsible for the majority (56%) of these cases. Travel to an endemic area was associated with the acquisition of malaria. The malaria importation rate was 2.36 per 1,000,000 travelers (range 1.20–5.74). The reproductive number under control (Rc) was 0. No endemic transmission of malaria in Taiwan was identified. This study suggests that a vigilant surveillance system, vector-control efforts, case management, and an educational approach focused on travelers and immigrants who visit malaria endemic countries are needed to prevent outbreaks and sustain the elimination of malaria in Taiwan.

Taking advantage of a historical quasi-experiment in Sri Lanka, this paper provides evidence on the effects of land market restrictions on wages and its spatial pattern. The empirical specification is derived from a general equilibrium model that predicts that the adverse effects of land market restrictions on wages will be less in remote locations. For identification, the study exploits the effects of historical malaria prevalence on the incidence of land restrictions through its effects on "crown land". During the 16th to early 20th centuries, areas severely affected by malaria were abandoned by households and the land was taken over by the government. These lands that were later distributed through resettlement programs are subject to sales, rental, and mortgage restrictions. The variations in the amount of crown land resulting from different intensity of historical malaria provide a source of exogenous variations in the incidence of land restrictions in a sub-district. The results show that land restrictions reduce wages substantially...

This paper reports the results of a survey of 5,000 households in the Greater Mumbai Region conducted in the winter of 2004. The goal of the survey was to better understand the demand for transport services by the poor, the factors affecting this demand, and the inter-linkages between transport decisions and other vital decisions such as where to live and work. This paper, the first of several research outputs, describes the salient facts about travel patterns in Mumbai for both poor and non-poor households. A striking finding of the survey is the extent to which all households-especially poor households-rely on walking. Overall, 44 percent of commuters in Mumbai walk to work. The proportion of the poor who walk to work is even higher-63 percent. Walking is an even higher modal share for nonwork than for work trips. A second finding is that public transit remains an important factor in the mobility of the poor, and especially in the mobility of the middle class. Overall, rail remains the main mode to work for 23 percent of commuters, while bus remains the main mode for 16 percent of commuters. The modal shares for bus are highest for the poor in zones 1-3 (21 percent of the poor in zone 2 take the bus to work), while rail shares are highest for the poor in the suburbs (25 percent of the poor in zone 6 take rail to work). Is the cost and lack of accessibility to transit a barrier to the mobility of the poor? Does it keep them from obtaining better housing and better jobs? This is a difficult question to answer without further analysis of the survey data. But it appears that transport is less of a barrier to the poor who live in central Mumbai (zones 1-3) than it is to the poor who live in the suburbs (zones 4-6). The poor who live in zones 1-3 (central Mumbai) live closer to the non-poor than do poor households in the suburbs. They also live closer to higher-paying jobs for unskilled workers. Workers in these households...

A project was carried out to obtain information on academic staffing in seven African universities, and to analyze the factors influencing academic staff to leave universities in Africa. The report provides detailed analysis and comment on the data, and makes suggestions and recommendations for improvement and policy interventions. The essential factors for improved staff capacity are identified as economic growth and revival, greater autonomy for universities, and the development of diversified sources of funding so as to remove the total dependence of universities on governments for funding. A wide range of staffing policy options are suggested, with the only viable way forward possibly being a "trade-off" between high, competitive salaries, or maintaining existing conditions which provide good leave and travel benefits (in practice as well as theory), a relaxed working environment, and a general lack of accountability. Strong leadership is essential, and reinforced and restructured university personnel offices and programs are crucial. The research environment is vital for viable academic staff recruitment and retention...

Although Lao PDR has made notable progress in improving maternal and child health (MCH), attainment of the Millennium Development Goal 5 (MDG5) still remains a challenge. This is largely due to the barriers imposed by financial restrictions. In order to address these financial barriers, the Government of Lao PDR has introduced a national free MCH policy. However, certain non-financial barriers are also impediments to the achievement of this goal, such as physical access to remote communities, especially during rainy season, cultural practices and beliefs, and poor educational outcomes. In seeking to inform the implementation and scale-up of this national free MCH policy at this crucial initial stage, this paper reports on findings from a household, village and health center survey The policy implications of the findings from the survey are: 1) although financial protection implied by the national free MCH policy is strong, reducing financial barriers alone would not be sufficient to increase the utilization of services...

In the light of the new development for a regulatory regime for scientific and educational space activities by Space Licensing and Safety Office (SLASO), this project was established to assess the background, status and prospect of the current Australian educational space activities that might require authorisation under the Space Activities Act 1998. The project investigated the appropriateness of the regime as well as any problems or issues that educational space activities might face when applying for approvals. The current educational space activities that might require authorisation and that is fit in the scope of this project were: Mars Gravity Biosatellite and Hyshot Program (both from University of Queensland), JAESAT (Queensland University of Technology), BLUESAT (University of New South Wales) and the Spiders in Space Program (Glen Waverley Secondary College, Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, and Melbourne Zoo). The Spiders in Space Program (an initiative of Spacehab) which was developed to experiment the spiders spinning webs on board the Columbia space shuttle had finished off its activities following the explosion of the space shuttle. There was no desirable data obtained. It was interesting to find out that the collaboration project between Glen Waverley Secondary School...

Background The increasing number of motor vehicles in urban areas has a significant impact on the environment, as well as, on human health. Motor vehicle emissions contribute a considerable amount of energy-related greenhouse gases and cause non-negligible air pollution. In addition, over-dependence on cars has also encouraged a sedentary lifestyle and an obesity epidemic, which may lead to increased burden of diseases. These health and environmental costs of motor vehicle usage can be reduced by encouraging individuals to change their travel behaviours in order to increase their use of alternative transport. Such a strategy provides an opportunity for collaboration between people working in the transportation, environment and public health areas. However, limited studies currently exist to provide sufficient evidence for policy and interventions relating to this issue. Aims The aims of the research presented in this thesis are to improve our understanding of the co-benefit effects of alternative transport and to investigate perspectives from communities and stakeholders on sustainable travel behaviour change in Adelaide, South Australia. Methods A mixed-method study design was employed, with three interrelated studies conducted: two quantitative and one qualitative. The first study was focussed on a scenario-based modelling analysis. Separate models...

Women and men use rural and urban transport for different purposes based on their socially determined roles and responsibilities. Poor rural transport systems limit access to markets, education, and health services for all, but even more so for women and girls. Female mobility is often constrained by heavy domestic work-loads and time spent traveling by foot, carrying heavy loads over rough trails. Time poverty combines with cultural restrictions to limit women's and girls' economic, educational opportunities and participation in community decision-making, particularly for ethnic minority women in remote mountainous areas. Gender differences in mobility and access are also affected by ability to pay for transport services. Most women have more limited access to financial and other resources, and inadequate voice in local level transport priority setting than men. Gender and Transport capacity building needs to be grounded in practical, on-the ground country realities in the transport sector and draw on the experience of transport specialists who have addressed gender in their work or clearly understand the entry points. Participatory gender and transport capacity building that provides opportunities for applying what is learned to transport problems is more effective than a lecture format.

This study developed a computer program from the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS), in order to obtain an objective analysis of information received from student and employer evaluation forms presently in use by the School of Food, Hotel and Travel Management and the Coop and Placement Office at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT). The purpose for doing this study is for giving the Coop and Placement Office a means for collecting, monitoring and tracking pertinent information from students and employers involved in cooperative education (coop). An analysis is given for the 1993 data inputted into the SPSS program. This data illustrates useful information available through the use of an SPSS program. The following information is found in this study: 60% of all students doing coops were from the Hotel concentration. 46% of students worked in a Hotel. 31% worked in- the Food industry. The average wage of coop students was between $5-$7 per hour. Majority of students were located in the state of New York. 55% of students claimed to have difficulties on their coops. Due to the difficulty in quantifying the qualitative data (comment sections), suggestions are made for future use through information gained from the comment section. A brief history and definition of cooperative education is provided. This is so the reader and researcher can be familiar with the value of cooperative education. An informal benchmark of the evaluation process with three Universities: Drexel University...

This is a continuation of project in service measurement in RIT cooperative education program developed by Amynah Virani in 1993. This study is testing a SPSS (the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) program that analyze statistical data for the evaluation process in School of Food, Hotel, and Travel management. The t-test is done in 3 years from 1993 through 1995 in gender and major of students and gender of employers. The questionnaire is already in use. The data is obtained from employers and student forms and it has to be paired to use in the research. There were 37 pair of participants in 1994 and 90 pair of participants in 1995 compare with 93 pairs of participants in 1993 which is already collected. Most of the significant differences are in food major. There are eight significant differences in food vs. hotel, six in food vs. nutrition and three in food vs. travel. The other results are six differences in hotel vs. travel and six differences in travel vs. nutrition. Twenty of significant differences have p-value less than or equal to 0.1, nineteen of them have p-value less than or equal to 0.05, three of them have p-value less than or equal to 0.01 and none of them has p-value less than or equal to 0.001. The lesser p-value the more the differences. The most significant changes category are 'pay' by gender and by major. Average men were paid more than women and diversity in major but still less satisfaction than other categories in student rating. Sex of evaluator has most effect on what they evaluated in 1995.
