In this paper authors present the overall study that includes the model developed (VS Model) and the experiences performed, with an automatic bidirectional sign language translator, between written and sign language, which is being supervised by the research group GILT (Graphics, interaction & learning technologies) under the frame of a national project called Virtual Sign (VS project). This project aims to develop and evaluate a model that facilitates access for the deaf and hearing impaired to digital content - in particular the educational content and learning objects - creating the conditions for greater social inclusion of deaf and hearing impaired people. Access to digital content will be supported by an automatic translator between Portuguese Writing (LEP) and Portuguese Sign Language (LGP) supported by an interaction model.

This work aims on an approach concerning on Translation Theories, as well as the translational difficulties, the linguistic barriers with which the translator must know how to deal, the role of the translator as a conscious subject of his work while creating new texts and producing meanings. We will develop a discussion focused on the audiovisual translation practice which means the translation for subtitles and dubbings. It will be shown the translation process on both modalities and also the issue about the translation of humor in each of them, as the translator must use his translational skill, cultural and linguistic knowledge and creativity, not only to circumvent the rules imposed by the audiovisual translation market, but also to be able to create a new language for each character presented in the original material, so that the translation in Portuguese language may contain proper traces of humor from the Brazilian culture. Our main goal is an attempt to explain the reason for so many questions from the public who does not know the rules in the market for subtitling and dubbing translation and sometimes criticize the work of the translator if they realize any ‘loss of information’ or ‘a translation very poorly done’. Theories and arguments which prove that no translation is done badly...

Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Centro de Comunicação e Expressão. Programa de Pós-Graduação em Letras/Inglês e Literatura Correspondente.; The interdisciplinary nature of Translation Studies allows for different approaches to look at the translation phenomena. In this respect, this study, informed by corpus-based studies and systemic linguistics, proposes to investigate how the entity "the translator" is construed in the small scale parallel corpus composed of Becoming a Translator (1997), an academic book textualized by Douglas Robinson, and its counterpart Construindo o Tradutor (2002), retextualized by Jussara Simões, by looking at transitivity patterns emerging in the modeling of the translator in both texts. The analysis is assisted by the software WordSmith Tools (Scott 1998) for data collection, and on the numeric code for corpus annotation CROSF 14 (Feitosa, 2005). The analysis of transitivity choices in the language used to construe the image of "the translator" showed that such entity has been quantitatively and proportionally retextualized. Nevertheless, the qualitative analysis revealed a slight divergence as regards the construal of the image of the translator in the retextualization.

The main focus of discussion in this research is the role of the interpreter/translator of Libras (Brazilian Sign Language) in regular educational schools. The problem which excited the investigation was the failure death students face when learning to read and write in Portuguese. The leading question was: what collaborative work can the interpreter/translator develop along with the other professionals in school, as to help dealing with this matter? The final “Educational Product” of this dissertation is a virtual forum of discussion in a site called Espaço Colaborativo Virtual Permanente, which has the purpose of debating and exchanging the experiences of all professionals working in the specialized educational environments at school, such as interpreters, translators, teachers, coordinators etc. In order to fulfill this goal, during the investigation, the specific objectives of the study were to identify and to develop pedagogical didactical approaches, inclusive and socializing activities and flexible contents for classrooms which welcome death and non-death students. The interpreter/translator of Libras in these classrooms also performed as the investigator of this research, by observing the answers of two death students to an interview...

While the cost of computing hardware has decreased steadily, the cost of software design, development and, maintenance has increased. One approach to reduce the cost of software development is rapid prototyping. Further, it has been proposed to combine the design strategy of rapid prototyping with a computer aided software prototyping system. Such a system would allow the software designer to employ a software base of reusable program modules. It would assist in prototyping and would automate a large part of the development effort. An important component of the automation would be a language translator facility. This translator would allow the designer to develop a software prototype in a high level specification language which would be simple and convenient to use and would translate the specification statements into an executable software language. This thesis demonstrates the feasibility of using a language translator by developing a prototype translator for a computer aided software prototyping system. The translator is written in Attribute Grammar (AG) language and translates software specifications stated in the Prototype System Description Language (PSDL) into computer executable code in the Ada language

Today's students will be tomorrow's professionals and it is in the classroom context that everything begins. As such, and in accordance with the Bologna process, we have changed the shift to the students' empowerment in the light of the social constructivist approach designed by Don Kirally (2000) where authentic and interactive learning happens through a reassessment ofteacher's and student's roles in the classroom. Webquests, as proposed by Bernie Dodge (1995) correspond to a clearly student-centered methodology and are based on the Internet research, where almost every resource can be used in arder to back up a set of didactic learning tasks. This paper is the result of a case-study where we tried to assess the degree of usage and of self-learning regarding different tools which support the translation process. As such the following tools were used to collect our data: l) A questionnaire in order to characterize the group (Translation master students) and assess their knowledge of Translation Technologies. 2) Observation grid regarding the three performed Webquests. a) Tools and resources for Translation (Thematic portais, Search engines, webpages, glossaries, dictionaries, grammars, encyclopaedias and digital terminological databases)...

Promoting equity, equal opportunities to all and social inclusion of people with disabilities is a concern of modern societies at large and a key topic in the agenda of European Higher Education. Despite all the progress, we cannot ignore the fact that the conditions provided by the society for the deaf are still far from being perfect. The communication with deaf by means of written text is not as efficient as it might seem at first. In fact, there is a very deep gap between sign language and spoken/written language. The vocabulary, the sentence construction and the grammatical rules are quite different among these two worlds. These facts bring significant difficulties in reading and understanding the meaning of text for deaf people and, on the other hand, make it quite difficult for people with no hearing disabilities to understand sign language. The deployment of tools to assist the daily communication, in schools, in public services, in museums and other, between deaf people and the rest may be a significant contribution to the social inclusion of the deaf community. The work described in this paper addresses the development of a bidirectional translator between Portuguese Sign Language and Portuguese text. The translator from sign language to text resorts to two devices...

This final report includes three major parts describing (1) sample collection and analysis, (2) analyses of field samples and mixing experiments, and (3) evaluation of metal release and development of the methodology for the translator. The first section describes sample collection, handling and chemical analyses together with QA/QC data. We used clean techniques from the beginning of sample collection to the completion of laboratory analyses. The second part summarizes total and dissolved copper and lead concentrations, pH, dissolved organic carbon, alkalinity and solids concentrations of the POTW effluents and Delaware River water samples. Mixing experiment results are also included in this section. Those mixing experiments were conducted at three pH levels (pH 6, ambient pH and pH 8). Mixing results indicate that copper shows conservative behavior at ambient solids concentrations. Removal of copper from the dissolved phase was observed at high solids concentration (larger than 200 mg/L). The removal process followed first order reaction kinetics. The last part of this report contains the assessment of metal release from POTW effluent particulates and the development of a chemical translator for the Delaware River. The ratio of dissolved to total recoverable metal concentrations were determined after mixing at ratios of 1:l and 1:2 of effluent to receiving water. Total suspended solids concentration in a mixture was calculated assuming conservative mixing. A linear regression equation was developed to describe a relationship between the ratio of dissolved to total recoverable metal and total suspended solids. Both NY/NJ harbor data for lead...

This paper aims to show how a parallel corpus – initially designed to investigate practices of translating children’s fantasy literature – can be used in the translator education environment. It suggests that the hard evidence produced by such corpus can provide trainee students with useful “points of orientation” for the treatment of names in translating children’s fantasy literature. PEPCOCFL – The Portuguese English Parallel Corpus of Children’s Fantasy Literature – is used to illustrate how this can be achieved. In their forward to this book, Hatim and Mason point out that their intention is not to teach translators how to translate. They consider (quite rightly) that that would be presumptuous, in particular because they are using translators as their source of "evidence for what we know about translating". Evidently it is also not their intention that Discourse and the Translator should be used by teachers of translation to teach translation students and inexperienced translators how to translate. This opens the questions of what precisely their purpose was in producing this book. Their stated aim is to "relate an integrated account of discourse processes to the practical concerns of the translator" and to "provide pointers to areas for further research".; In their forward to this book, Hatim and Mason point out that their intention is not to teach translators how to translate. If we want to encompass adequately the wide-ranging field of human translation, it is necessary to include in translation studies (TS) the concept of translator awareness (or translator consciousness, for that matter). However, this is more easily said than done, because this concept does not easily lend itself to definition, let alone to measurement, e. g., by investigating translator behaviour. To put it bluntly: Translator awareness is a fuzzy concept. Like many obviously difficult-to-define concepts, with which dialogue in TS is burdened, translator awareness lacks an articulated theory within which different forms of translator behaviour can be convincingly related to, or distinguished from, one another. Hence, TS has so far not tackled, at least not systematically, the issue of translator awareness.; If we want to encompass adequately the wide-ranging field of human translation, it is necessary to include in translation studies (TS) the concept of translator awareness (or translator consciousness, for that matter). The present research covers the intersection between Descriptive Translation Studies and Children’s Literature and aims to investigate the important role of the translator as mediator of marked language, more specifically by dialect and slang. This paper is based both on Santos’s (2010) concluded mastering thesis which investigated the translation of the dialect of the character Rubeus Hagrid and Santos’s ongoing PhD research which deals with translation into Brazilian Portuguese of slang words in the Harry Potter series. The initial hypothesis is that dialects and slang words will be translated by standard language and this translator choice is influenced by the particularities of its readership.

This article explores wisdom as concept to guide translator education in institutions of higher education. It uses the work of Paul Baltes to posit wisdom as the orchestration of mind and virtue for the common good. Wisdom then signifies the outcome of translator education. Narrative is a mode of communication that is able to foster wisdom. In this respect, the article elaborates on Baker's use of narrative theory in translation studies. In conclusion certain aspects of education are suggested, which would enhance translators' wisdom so that they may be able to judge ill-structured, complicated communication situations in order to enhance communication.
