Este trabalho analisa Aparição, obra do escritor português Vergílio Ferreira (1916-1996), na perspectiva da temática existencialista e nos aspectos de tempo e espaço. Vergílio, na linha de Sartre e, principalmente, de Heidegger, é obcecado pelo mistério do ser, pela procura do sentido da existência humana, o que o leva a refletir e observar sem cessar o homem, suas idéias e ações. Preso a um espaço e tempo determinado, com uma pseudoliberdade, o homem pensa e age inconscientemente, enfrenta problemas de relacionamento de seu eu com o eu do outro e não sabe como se colocar perante a finitude da vida. O homem deve procurar sua aparição ou epifania, aparecendo a si mesmo, com plena consciência de suas possibilidades e limitações, capaz de conhecer-se e assumir-se como ser com o outro, para a morte ou contra a morte. Filosofias e religiões não dão conta de conduzir o homem no caminho de busca de si mesmo. Ele está só, preso a um espaço e tempo povoados pela memória da morte, por diálogos que nunca se completam e símbolos que nada significam. Este trabalho tem por objetivo principal investigar a relação entre epistemologia e cultura no ensino de física. Para isso, estudamos dois conceitos de base, tempo e espaço, nos seus aspectos multiconceituais e culturais. Como referência para esse estudo, utilizamos as noções de perfil e obstáculo epistemológico propostas pelo epistemólogo francês Gaston Bachelard. Em sua obra A filosofia do Não, ao propor e analisar seu perfil epistemológico do conceito de massa, Bachelard utiliza, nas explicações das diferentes escolas filosóficas que o formam, elementos próprios da sua cultura como, por exemplo, a conduta da balança, identificada com o seu trabalho nos correios e no laboratório de química. No entanto, não se aprofunda nem define a noção de cultura que utiliza. Sendo assim, adotamos a ação cultural freireana como o nosso referencial cultural, pois entendemos que a cultura como criação humana nos possibilita uma análise do perfil epistemológico mais ajustada com a proposta bachelardiana. Além disso, os níveis de consciência apresentados por Freire são referência para a nossa análise da presença da física na cultura, algo que também está em nosso objetivo. Nesta Tese de Doutorado, procuro conhecer e entender o funcionamento das configurações espaço-temporais exercidas em um laboratório de pesquisa em bioquímica, visando mostrar seus possíveis efeitos nos processos que constituem as subjetividades. O entendimento de tempo e espaço como categorias socialmente construídas levou-me a buscar compreender os processos sócio-históricos relacionados à sua construção. Inicialmente, apresento o olhar histórico que empreendi com a finalidade de mostrar a emergência das categorias tempo e espaço, entendidas como noções constitutivas de modos de pensar o mundo e a si mesmo. Com esse olhar, busco compreender as implicações dessas categorias na vida das pessoas em diferentes épocas. Para tanto, revisito alguns momentos históricos, desde a Antigüidade até a contemporaneidade, mostrando as compreensões, as necessidades e as estratégias relacionadas ao tempo e ao espaço, marcando continuidades e descontinuidades nesses períodos. A partir dessas reflexões, procuro tornar visíveis o caráter construído dessas noções e o funcionamento das configurações espaço-temporais, assim como chamar a atenção para possíveis efeitos na vida das pessoas. Multiscale Dynamic Time and Space Warping; Multiscale DTSW

Dynamic Time and Space Warping (DTSW) is a technique used in video matching applications to find the optimal alignment between two videos. Because DTSW requires O(N4) time and space complexity, it is only suitable for short and coarse resolution videos. In this thesis, we introduce Multiscale DTSW: a modification of DTSW that has linear time and space complexity (O(N)) with good accuracy. The first step in Multiscale DTSW is to apply the DTSW algorithm to coarse resolution input videos. In the next step, Multiscale DTSW projects the solution from coarse resolution to finer resolution. A solution for finer resolution can be found effectively by refining the projected solution. Multiscale DTSW then repeatedly projects a solution from the current resolution to finer resolution and refines it until the desired resolution is reached. I have explored the linear time and space complexity (O(N)) of Multiscale DTSW both theoretically and empirically. I also have shown that Multiscale DTSW achieves almost the same accuracy as DTSW. Because of its efficiency in computational cost, Multiscale DTSW is suitable for video detection and video classification applications. We have developed a Multiscale-DTSW-based video classification framework that achieves the same accuracy as a DTSW-based video classification framework with greater than 50 percent reduction in the execution time. peer-reviewed; Suggesting that a focus on young people can be regarded as a kind of litmus test of the cultural processes operating in a society, this article looks at their ideas about time and space in the context of exploring the extent to which Ireland is a post late modern society. Drawing on a stratified one in ten random sample of approximately 34,000 texts written by 10-12 year olds and 15-17 year olds, the article explores the importance and meaning of the local, ideas about time (including generational positioning), adult concepts of time, spatial time, and ideas about the future. The method of analysis is both quantitative and qualitative, with variation being explored in terms of gender and age.

This research investigates exercises produced by 10 year old children, attending the class E, Cycle II (5th year of elementary school), of the municipal school Professor Lourenço Ferreira Campos, located in Goiânia. It aimed to analyze how do these children relate to the past and how do they perceive the change in time and space, from three images of the city of Goiânia at different times. Three pictures of the city were selected, taken in 1937, 1942 and 2011, in order to execute  the proposed task. A literature review of related articles, either by affinity or by contrast, to a fundamental theory of time and space - time previously developed. It shows how from a primitive concept of preparticle and membership relation of set theory, and four postulates that refer to simple concepts, derived concepts of time, space-time, reference frame, particle, fields, and interaction between fields are obtained. The problem of the "direction " of time is analyzed and a paradox whose solution goes against the idea that this direction is fixed by the increase of entropy prescribed by the second law of thermodynamics is examined. In our theory this direction is unique to each reference frame, and is an intrinsic property of time. Two kinds of particles are described as derived concepts, and it is shown that one of them fullfills the Bose-Einstein statistics, and the other one fullfills the Fermi-Dirac statistics. We also consider the analysis of the wave function concepts and particle detector as concepts derived from the mentioned theory. Using these concepts, the process of locating both a macroscopic body (typical location) as well as one of a microscopic scale (quantum localization) is analyzed, and the significance of the location is examined in both cases.; Comment: This is an English version of the article entitled Conceptos de tiempo y espacio-tiempo en la fisica

Future miniaturization and mobilization of computing devices requires energy parsimonious `adiabatic' computation. This is contingent on logical reversibility of computation. An example is the idea of quantum computations which are reversible except for the irreversible observation steps. We propose to study quantitatively the exchange of computational resources like time and space for irreversibility in computations. Reversible simulations of irreversible computations are memory intensive. Such (polynomial time) simulations are analysed here in terms of `reversible' pebble games. We show that Bennett's pebbling strategy uses least additional space for the greatest number of simulated steps. We derive a trade-off for storage space versus irreversible erasure. Next we consider reversible computation itself. An alternative proof is provided for the precise expression of the ultimate irreversibility cost of an otherwise reversible computation without restrictions on time and space use. A time-irreversibility trade-off hierarchy in the exponential time region is exhibited. Finally, extreme time-irreversibility trade-offs for reversible computations in the thoroughly unrealistic range of computable versus noncomputable time-bounds are given.; Comment: 30 pages...

A crucial point in the debate on feasibility of earthquake prediction is the dependence of an earthquake magnitude from past seismicity. Indeed, whilst clustering in time and space is widely accepted, much more questionable is the existence of magnitude correlations. The standard approach generally assumes that magnitudes are independent and therefore in principle unpredictable. Here we show the existence of clustering in magnitude: earthquakes occur with higher probability close in time, space and magnitude to previous events. More precisely, the next earthquake tends to have a magnitude similar but smaller than the previous one. A dynamical scaling relation between magnitude, time and space distances reproduces the complex pattern of magnitude, spatial and temporal correlations observed in experimental seismic catalogs.; Comment: 4 Figures

A theory of time and space with fractional dimensions (FD) of time and space ($d_{\alpha}, \alpha=t,{\bf r})$ defined on multifractal sets is proposed. The FD is determined (using principle of minimum the functionals of FD) by the energy densities of Lagrangians of known physical fields. To describe behaviour of functions defined on multifractal sets the generalizations of the fractional Riemann-Liouville derivatives $D_{t}^{d(t)}$ are introduced with the order of differentiation (depending on time and coordinate) being equal the value of fractional dimension. For $d_{t}=const$ the generalized fractional derivatives (GFD) reduce to ordinary Riemann-Liouville integral functionals, and when $d_{t}$ is close to integer, GFD can be represented by means of derivatives of integer order. For time and space with fractional dimensions a method to investigate the generalized equations of theoretical physics by means of GFD is proposed. The Euler equations defined on multifractal sets of time and space are obtained using the principle of the minimum of FD functionals. As an example, a generalized Newton equation is considered and it is shown that this equation coincide with the equation of classical limit of general theory of relativity for $d_{t} \to 1$. Several remarks concerning existence of repulsive gravitation are discussed. We investigate the time and space complexity of detecting and preventing ABAs in shared memory algorithms for systems with n processes and bounded base objects. To that end, we define ABA-detecting registers, which are similar to normal read/write registers, except that they allow a process q to detect with a read operation, whether some process wrote the register since q's last read. ABA-detecting registers can be implemented trivially from a single unbounded register, but we show that they have a high complexity if base objects are bounded: An obstruction-free implementation of an ABA-detecting single bit register cannot be implemented from fewer than n-1 bounded registers. Moreover, bounded CAS objects (or more generally, conditional read-modify-write primitives) offer little help to implement ABA-detecting single bit registers: We prove a linear time-space tradeoff for such implementations. We show that the same time-space tradeoff holds for implementations of single bit LL/SC primitives from bounded writable CAS objects. This proves that the implementations of LL/SC/VL by Anderson and Moir (1995) as well as Jayanti and Petrovic (2003) are optimal. We prove a general upper bound on the tradeoff between time and space that suffices for the reversible simulation of irreversible computation. Previously, only simulations using exponential time or quadratic space were known. The tradeoff shows for the first time that we can simultaneously achieve subexponential time and subquadratic space. The boundary values are the exponential time with hardly any extra space required by the Lange-McKenzie-Tapp method and the ($\log 3$)th power time with square space required by the Bennett method. We also give the first general lower bound on the extra storage space required by general reversible simulation. In asymptotic regimes, both in time and space (network size), the derivation of network capacity results is grossly simplified by brushing aside queueing behavior in non-Jackson networks. This simplifying double-limit model, however, lends itself to conservative numerical results in finite regimes. To properly account for queueing behavior beyond a simple calculus based on average rates, we advocate a system theoretic methodology for the capacity problem in finite time and space regimes. This methodology also accounts for spatial correlations arising in networks with CSMA/CA scheduling and it delivers rigorous closed-form capacity results in terms of probability distributions. Unlike numerous existing asymptotic results, subject to anecdotal practical concerns, our transient one can be used in practical settings: for example, to compute the time scales at which multi-hop routing is more advantageous than single-hop routing.

In special relativity, time and space are necessarily interconvertible in order that the speed of light is an invariant. This places time and space on an equal footing which, perplexingly, does not carry over to other areas of physics. For example in quantum mechanics, time is treated classically whereas space is associated with a quantum description. Differences between time and space are also found in the violation of the discrete symmetries of charge conjugation, parity inversion and time reversal---the violations are inferred from the decay of particles over time irrespective of their position in space, and so they are associated with translations in time but not in space. Although these violations are clearly important, their wider implications are unknown. We show here that when the violations are included explicitly in a quantum formalism, remarkable differences arise between the character of quantum states in time and space. In particular, despite time and space having an equal footing at a fundamental level, we find that quantum states can be localised in space and yet have unbounded evolution in time. As such, the violations are shown to play a defining role in the asymmetry between time and space in quantum mechanics.; Comment: 13 pages...

Finding an optimal solution of signal traffic control durations is a computationally intensive task. It is typically O(T3) in time, and O(T2) in space, where T is the length of the control interval in discrete time steps. In this paper, we propose a linear time and space algorithm for the same problem. The algorithm provides for an efficient dynamic programming formulation of the state space, the prunes non-optimal states, early on. Aesthetic moments created by the interaction of human beings everyday become more exciting and valuable when a simple shape takes the viewer to another place, time, or state of mind. I am interested in engaging simplified shapes in order to generate a heightened experience of movement and an acute sense of belonging within time and space. Through the use of tungsten inner gas (TIG) welding, I translated geometric forms of steel into sculptures. The eye follows lines that evoke a sense of balance in motion and boundaries. Investigation of geometric lines as a mapping element reflects memories and relationships that I have experienced within my past and present. Important sources for my work include: incisions of fully developed painted pottery, geometric ornaments found in the oldest manuscript book from the First Bulgarian Kingdom (680-1018), the reflection of the sun off surfaces in the early morning, or the feeling of the land around us which suggest the linear qualities of continuous balance between human beings and experience. The reflective and textural aspects of the surface of my work are applied to provide a mirror and collect relationships within the surrounding environment that repeat continuously around the forms. Color choices are based on memories associated with personal relationships throughout my life and they are used to intensify an area of interest. I believe that structural boundaries that are expressive in visual harmony create a relationship and a dialog between the viewer...

Celebrating the centenary of the publication of Marcel Proust’s In Search of Lost Time, it is proposed a reading of some connections between this classic of literature and the architectural thought in the way of teaching architecture, as adopted by FAUUSP. The importance of Proust’s stylistic innovation is seen through the influence of Brazilian architectural thought, when the role of this art is accepted as language of the world around us. One of the most relevant theoretical insights into the characteristics of technological change is Dosi's technological paradigm. Dosi aims to overcome technology-push and demand-pull theories into a framework closer to facts. The present contribution is set in this framework, aiming to find some evidence, starting from an empirical analysis, of the characteristics of technological paradigms. The context is the ex ante and pre-industrialization phase of a highly knowledge-intensive paradigm, that of nanotechnologies and nanosciences. The present work exploits an empirical analysis related to patent citations, with particular regard to citations of scientific journal articles. Both the time and the space dimensions are explored. Results - strict time and space relations between patenting and previous scientific production - confirm some characteristics of technological paradigms envisaged both by the original work and by subsequent literature.
