With this paper I intend to join to theorists who have discussed issues of difference and identity, with the aim of problematising some of the knowing/doing dimensions of nursing in contemporaneity. I am using as an analytical-theoretical background the Cultural Studies and Gender theories that develop a critical approach to post-structuralism. In the light of such a background I analyse some elements or constitutive aspects of the current theories on Care. I argue that to think care from the perspective of difference is to accept the challenge of not thinking about it as an action underpinned by scientific...

Dual-process theories of the mind are ubiquitous in psychology. A central principle of these theories is that behavior is determined by the interplay of automatic and controlled processing. In this article, the authors examine individual differences in the capacity to control attention as a major contributor to differences in working memory capacity (WMC). The authors discuss the enormous implications of this individual difference for a host of dual-process theories in social, personality, cognitive, and clinical psychology. In addition, the authors propose several new areas of investigation that derive directly from applying the concept of WMC to dual-process theories of the mind.

(cont.) Slow information diffusion can cause return momentum. Institutions are thought to be more informed than individuals, and should eliminate return predictability. However, higher institutional ownership is associated with more momentum. Therefore, institutions either herd on returns or can have information before individuals. I find evidence of the latter. However, the effects are economically small, suggesting that aggregate data obscures differences between institutions. I divide institutions by trading aggressiveness. Aggressive institutions are more responsive to recent returns, and a strategy mimicking their trades generates even better performance. This confirms that some investors are more informed than others, but do not eliminate return predictability.; This thesis consists of three chapters, each about a separate aspect of how investors respond to information in equity markets. The first chapter concerns news and stock returns. Using a comprehensive database of headlines about individual companies, I examine monthly returns following public news. I compare them to stocks with similar returns, but no identifiable public news. There is a difference between the two sets. I find strong drift after bad news. Investors seem to react slowly to this information. I also find reversal after extreme price movements unaccompanied by public news. The separate patterns appear even after adjustments for risk exposure and other effects. They are...

Linear edge waves were first found mathematically by Stokes (1846). It has long been a topic of interest, since edge waves are believed to be responsible for the formation of beach cusps. Galvin (1965) was the first to observe in the laboratory that edge wave mode of frequency w can be excited by incident waves of frequency w. Guza and Bowen (1976) gave a theoretical explanation of the nonlinear mechanism of sub-harmonic resonance. This type of theory has been extended by Minzoni & Whitham (1977), Rockliff (1978), and Rockliff & Smith (1985), among others. Rockliff also initiated a. theory whereby subharmonic resonance can be achieved by an incident wave of frequency w, which leads to second harmonic at the second order to excite the edge wave. Their theory was however incomplete. The goal of this thesis is to extend the existing theories in order to show other paths to resonance. The nearshore region is a plane beach of small slope. For all cases we shall derive the evolution equations governing the edge wave amplitudes and analyze the stability of the equilibrium (static or dynamic) state. We first study in Chapter 2 synchronous resonance as a special case. We shall show that interaction between the edge wave and the incident/reflected wave also generates circulation cells on the beach.; (cont.) Comparison is made between our theoretical results and the experiments by Bowen & Inman. We then give a corrected version of the work of Rockliff and Rockliff & Smith. Next...

This thesis explores the spatialities of oppression between individuals involved in activist organizations. Oppression is a concept which has been extensively examined and challenged in feminist and anti-racist geographies. Yet those who practice anti-oppressive politics are still under the influence of those systems, as resistance is also influenced and produced through systems of oppression. This research project draws on the experiences of queer and racialized individuals in order to explore how oppression is enacted within communities which seek to challenge domination and marginalization. Qualitative interviews with participants reveal patterns of oppression and how processes of human differentiation take place within their respective community organizations. Participants’ constructions of identity and community provide insight into the prevalence of the ideal of community, and the ways in which communities may be failing to actualize solidarity across difference. Namely, they discuss how normatively white queer organizations can often struggle with issues of racialization. Conceptualizations of identity are situated within theories of intersectionality and performativity, revealing uneven affective geographies and tensions of identity politics. Using the framework of the politics of difference...

This thesis studies financial risk measures which dynamically assign a value to a risk at a future date which can be interpreted as the present value of a future monetary value. In particular, the theories of backward stochastic difference equations in discrete time and differential equations in continuous time (BSDE) with respect to a single jump process are developed. Based on these theories, some associated dynamic risk measures are defined. Chapter 1 is an introduction to the background of BSDEs, risk measures, and the single jump process, and also outlines the structure of this thesis. Part I considers backward stochastic difference equations related to a discrete finite time single jump process (Chapter 2) and backward stochastic differential equations related to a finite continuous time single jump process (Chapter 3). We prove the existence and uniqueness of solutions of these BSDEs under some assumptions. Comparison Theorems for these solutions are also given. Applications to the theory of nonlinear expectations are then investigated. Part II considers some applications of the theories established in Part I. In Chapter 4, risk measures related to the solutions of backward stochastic difference equations with respect to a discrete time single jump process are defined and some simple numerical examples are given. In Chapter 5...

This thesis explores the debate and issues regarding the status of visual ;,iferellces in the optical writings of Rene Descartes, George Berkeley and James 1. Gibson. It gathers arguments from across their works and synthesizes an account of visual depthperception that accurately reflects the larger, metaphysical implications of their philosophical theories. Chapters 1 and 2 address the Cartesian and Berkelean theories of depth-perception, respectively. For Descartes and Berkeley the debate can be put in the following way: How is it possible that we experience objects as appearing outside of us, at various distances, if objects appear inside of us, in the representations of the individual's mind? Thus, the Descartes-Berkeley component of the debate takes place exclusively within a representationalist setting. Representational theories of depthperception are rooted in the scientific discovery that objects project a merely twodimensional patchwork of forms on the retina. I call this the "flat image" problem. This poses the problem of depth in terms of a difference between two- and three-dimensional orders (i.e., a gap to be bridged by one inferential procedure or another). Chapter 3 addresses Gibson's ecological response to the debate. Gibson argues that the perceiver cannot be flattened out into a passive...

Studies that have used mostly self-reported height have found that men with a same-sex orientation and women with an other-sex orientation are shorter, on average, than men with an other-sex orientation and women with a same-sex orientation, respectively. This thesis examined whether an objective height difference exists or whether a psychosocial account (e.g., distortion of self-reports) may explain these putative height differences. Also, this thesis examined whether certain individual differences (e.g, gender roles and socially desirable responding) predict height distortion. Eight hundred and thirteen participants, recruited at Brock University, the Niagara Community and through surrounding LGBT events, completed self-reported height, measures of gender roles and socially desirable responding, and had their height measured. Using hierarchical linear regressions, it was found that Same-Sex/Both-Sex Oriented men were shorter, on average, than predominantly Other-Sex Oriented men; however, there was no difference in objective height between Same-Sex/Both-Sex Oriented women and predominantly Other-Sex Oriented women. These findings contribute to existing biological theories of men's sexual orientation development and do not contribute to biological theories of women's sexual orientation development. Height distortion was not related to sexual orientation and only marginally related to sex. Predictors of height distortion were Impression Management...

The study seeks to explain the rise of "China threat" arguments in the United States and Japan in the 1990s by using three theories of states behavior- realism, organization theory, and democratic peace theory. The rise of "China threat" arguments occurred in the United States and Japan because of a convergence of several factors, the most important of which was the increase of China's relative power after the Cold War. The distribution of power among states strongly affects their intentions and military capabilities. The study introduces and suggests the importance of the strategic safety-net in shaping threat perception. A strategic safety-net emerges when state's survival depends on cooperation with another state. When the strategic safety-net exists, states suppress self-interested behavior and the ally's intentions are perceived as benign. Interviews with former government officials in the United States and Japan confirmed that strategic necessity restrained U.S. and Japanese behavior towards China during the Cold War and limited suspicion of China. The fraying of the strategic safety-net led to the advent of "China threat" arguments.; (cont.) The main difference between the United States and Japan was that whereas in the U.S. case threat perception was shaped by a primacy strategy...

We carefully examine common measures of dynamical heterogeneity for a model polymer melt and test how these scales compare with those hypothesized by the Adam and Gibbs (AG) and random first-order transition (RFOT) theories of relaxation in glass-forming liquids. To this end, we first analyze clusters of highly mobile particles, the string-like collective motion of these mobile particles, and clusters of relative low mobility. We show that the time scale of the high-mobility clusters and strings is associated with a diffusive time scale, while the low-mobility particles' time scale relates to a structural relaxation time. The difference of the characteristic times for the high- and low-mobility particles naturally explains the well-known decoupling of diffusion and structural relaxation time scales. Despite the inherent difference of dynamics between high- and low-mobility particles, we find a high degree of similarity in the geometrical structure of these particle clusters. In particular, we show that the fractal dimensions of these clusters are consistent with those of swollen branched polymers or branched polymers with screened excluded-volume interactions, corresponding to lattice animals and percolation clusters, respectively. In contrast...

We address the importance of symmetry and symmetry breaking on linear response theories of fermionic BCS superfluids. The linear theory of a noninteracting Fermi gas is reviewed and several consistency constraints are verified. The challenge to formulate linear response theories of BCS superfluids consistent with density and spin conservation laws comes from the presence of a broken U(1)$_{\textrm{EM}}$ symmetry associated with electromagnetism (EM) and we discuss two routes for circumventing this. The first route follows Nambu's integral-equation approach for the EM vertex function, but this method is not specific for BCS superfluids. We focus on the second route based on a consistent-fluctuation-of-the order-parameter (CFOP) approach where the gauge transformation and the fluctuations of the order parameter are treated on equal footing. The CFOP approach allows one to explicitly verify several important constraints: The EM vertex satisfies not only a Ward identity which guarantees charge conservation but also a $Q$-limit Ward identity associated with the compressibility sum rule. In contrast, the spin degrees of freedom associated with another U(1)$_z$ symmetry are not affected by the Cooper-pair condensation that breaks only the U(1)$_{\textrm{EM}}$ symmetry. As a consequence the collective modes from the fluctuations of the order parameter only couple to the density response function but decouple from the spin response function...

The advent of gravitational wave astronomy provides new proving grounds for testing theories of gravity. Recent work has reinvigorated the study of bimetric theories of gravity and massive gravity theories. One of the most interesting predictions of these theories, as well as some string theories, is the subluminal speed of propagating gravitational waves. Multi-messenger astronomy provides a unique opportunity to put limits on the difference (either positive or negative) between the propagation speed of electromagnetic and gravitational waves from these sources. This paper considers limits from multi-messenger cases across the planned measurable spectrum: first, the limits from isolated pulsars based on the current best limits from LIGO on gravitational wave emission, second, the limits from ultra-compact binaries that will be visible to a low-frequency space-based gravitational wave observatory like LISA, and third, limits from super massive black hole binaries using pulsar timing arrays. The required phase comparison between the electromagnetic signal and the gravitational wave signal is derived and, assuming a null result in that comparison, the current bounds on emission are used to place limits on alternative theories that exhibit propagation delays. Observations of the pulsars in the most sensitive range of LIGO could put an upper limit on the graviton mass as low as $10^{-38}\frac{eV}{c^{2}}$ and an upper limit on the fractional difference between the gravitational wave and electromagnetic wave speeds as low as $10^{-9}$. This paper shows results from the initial LIGO limit catalog of known pulsars. The bounds are stronger for binaries. A LISA-like mission bounds $m_{g}<10^{-40}\frac{eV}{c^{2}}$ and $\delta<10^{-12}$. A PTA source gives even better bounds of $m_{g}<10^{-45}\frac{eV}{c^{2}}$ and $\delta<10^{-14}$.; Comment: Now covers test using interferometers and PTA's 20 pages...

Since the 1960s, the German-born US-American poet, Rosmarie Waldrop, has translated over 40 different works, largely from French and German, including 14 volumes by the Jewish French-language writer, Edmond Jabès (Jabès was expelled from Egypt in 1956 during the Suez Crisis). In 2003, Waldrop was made a Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres by the French Government, and in 2008 she received the PEN Award for Poetry in Translation in 2008, for her translation of Ulf Stolterfoht’s book, Lingos I-IX. As well as practising translation, however, Waldrop has also written several significant essays which reflect on different theories of translation and their implications for practice. Much of these considerations are taken up with the question of the relation between translation and writing, of thinking the ways in which theories of writing might suggest the lines for developing a specific form of poetic practice. This essay provides an overview of Waldrop’s central thoughts on translation and contextualises these in relation to some of the major theories of literary translation. In the latter part of the essay, these ideas are developed in specific relation to Waldrop’s translations of the work of Edmond Jabès and to the notion of writing practice it suggests.; Desde los años 60...

The arguments presented in this study are based on an ethnographic investigation resulting from an anthropological research carried out with transvestites involved in prostitution. This text proposes to consider difference based on Jacques Derrida’s idea of radical hospitality. Can and does neoclassical realism explain the difference in how India and China mobilise oil (a key resource) externally to meet their respective goals and objectives. The thesis illustrates how political economy (political economy as employed in the thesis examines the structure of the economic system, not the foreign policy executive) is incorporated as the intervening variable into neoclassical realism to explain the acquisition of oil blocks by Indian and Chinese oil corporations in West Africa. Consequently, the thesis transcends the existing or prevalent theories of neoclassical realism which either elucidate structural outcomes like polarity or balancing, or deviations from neorealism like under balancing or over balancing. The thesis postulates that the independent or the exogenous variable i.e. the difference in the relative power of India and China elucidates the ability of Chinese oil companies to outbid their Indian competitors and/or be preferred as partners by international oil companies (IOCs) and/or have better quality oil blocks as well as China’s widespread outreach in 11 countries in West Africa compared to India’s presence in two counties namely Nigeria and Gabon. The intervening variable or the difference in the political economy of India and China explicates why China is represented by state owned enterprises (SOEs) in the oil industry in West Africa where as India is represented by SOEs and/or private enterprises. For case study analysis...
