The aim of this study was to evaluate perceptions, barriers, and characteristics of teaching materials to promote healthy eating, as described by teenagers.

The linguistic, cultural and functional diversity related with the English language in today’s world has led to the reconsideration of fundamental assumptions in English Language Teaching (ELT), and rethinking traditional pedagogical practices. Teachers and policy makers are faced with challenging issues concerning which instructional variety should be chosen to guide the various aspects of a curriculum. Up to now, this decision was generally made without much thought, based on former concepts or the status quo (particular emphasis being given to Standard British or Standard American English). But, when considering today’s society use of English as an international language (EIL), several factors should be further contemplated — these include: students’ needs and goals, teachers’ expertise and available resources. This article gives particular emphasis to teaching materials used in classrooms. The importance of developing materials for effective language learning will be discussed, as well as some of the main principles for creating materials that can help prepare students to interact successfully in English international contexts.

non-peer-reviewed; As the numbers of students entering higher education in Ireland has grown by almost 140%, in the last 10 years (CSO 2013), so too has the diversity of students. While full-time undergraduate students still comprise the largest percentage in our higher education system, they are being joined in increasing numbers by mature, part-time and overseas students. Universities need to ensure that their pedagogical approach to teaching and learning are constantly reviewed to respond to such changing student cohort who represent different generations, learning styles, requirements and preferences. As part of the Higher Education Authority (HEA) strategic plan, universities are encouraged to align learning technologies with teaching and learning. This study aimed to explore if providing a variety of teaching materials to students would cater for their different learning styles. This was achieved by making available on the Course Management System (CMS) a combination of interactive and online teaching materials, in addition to traditional lectures. Could this in turn motivate students to learn, improve their learning potential and lead to higher learning success? A review of the literature pertaining to learning styles and theories...

Multigrade teaching is an increasingly important policy option for African countries as they seek to provide schooling for out-of-school children in areas of low population density. In multigrade teaching, a teacher works with students from two or more grade levels at the same time, in a single classroom. This study examines the challenges of implementing and supporting multigrade teaching through case studies of multigrade schooling in Uganda, Senegal, and The Gambia. These three countries offered different perspectives. In Uganda the schools observed mainly used one teacher to teach two grades, and had benefitted from a pilot project that had provided specialist training for teachers and additional learning materials. In Senegal, there were different models of multigrade schooling, including some experimental one-teacher schools. In The Gambia, multigrade teaching was being used largely by default, as shortages of teachers left some schools with more classes than teachers. From these three very varied cases...

A key objective of this report is to contribute toward developing a widely-shared vision for educational development for Madagascar based on a common understanding of the chalenges involved, and the part that each participant can play in realizing that vision. The report deals with all the main education sectors (i.e., primary, secondary, vocational/technical, and higher education), but the focus is necessarily limited by the complexity of the subject. In particular, non-formal education has been set aside. Similarly, neither early childhood nor curriculum development, teacher education, and pedagogical methods are addressed here. Rather, the emphasis is on key aspects of education cost and finance, and the link between spending options and educational outcomesA summary of key challenges includes an overall sector stratey of universalizing basic education of a reasonable quality while closely linking expansion of other levels and types of education and training to labor market demand. Further challenges include at the primary level...

Few would contest that teachers are a very important determinant of whether students learn in school. Yet, in the face of compelling evidence that many students are not learning what they are expected to learn, how to improve teacher performance has been the focus of much policy debate in rich and poor countries. This paper examines how incentives, both pecuniary and non-pecuniary, influence teacher effort. Using school survey data from Lao PDR, it estimates new measures of teacher effort, including the number of hours that teachers spend preparing for classes and teacher provision of private tutoring classes outside class hours. The estimation results indicate that teachers increase effort in response to non-pecuniary incentives, such as greater teacher autonomy over teaching materials, and monitoring mechanism, such as the existence of an active parent-teacher association and the ability of school principals to dismiss teachers. Methodologically, the paper provides a detailed derivation of a simultaneous ordinary least squares-probit model with school random effects that can jointly estimate teacher work hours and tutoring provision.

Os sistemas apostilados privados de ensino diluem autonomia e fragmentam identidades docentes, expondo um novo momento da Educação pública em âmbito municipal.; The use of private handouts in the teaching throughout the cities of São Paulo state represents a significant interference in the Education market. Food and Nutrition Security (FNS) must be ensured to everybody. The school environment is favorable to the formation of healthy habits and citizenship. The National Curriculum Parameters (PCNs) guide the promotion of health concepts in a transversal way in the school curriculum. This study aimed to identify and analyze the approach used for food and nutrition themes in Fundamental Education's teaching material and its interface with the concept of FNS and the PCNs. Documental research was conducted on the teaching material from 5th to 8th grades of Fundamental Education in Public School of the state of Sao Paulo. The diffuse presence of food and nutrition themes was found in most disciplines in all bimesters in the four series, which shows the interdisciplinarity in health. It was found that the PCNs are related to the concept of SAN in its various aspects and that most subjects include topics that approach this relationship. In the correlation between themes, there is emphasis to health promotion and food production. The methodology used in the teaching material presents the theme, but not the correspondent content, what made the analysis of its suitability impossible. We conclude that there is the approach of the issues related to food and nutrition in the teaching material...

This curriculum is designed for teaching a full school year of ASL Level II as a foreign language course at the high school level. The unit plans in this curriculum have been derived from the New York State's checkpoints or guidelines for teaching ASL as a foreign language. Each unit plan contains objectives for both the students' receptive and expressive skills, knowledge of Deaf culture/history, various options or suggestions for assessment, evaluation, resources and materials. Also included are New York State's communication sub-topics and functions as outlined in New York State's checkpoints for teaching ASL. ASL teachers may use this curriculum as a guideline or checklist in order to ensure that they have covered New York State's checkpoints while creating lesson plans. Additionally, ASL teachers have the option of following this curriculum in its sequential order or modifying it to meet the needs of their students however, because ASL is a visual language, it is strongly recommended that ASL teachers using this curriculum teach students ASL without the use of voice. A list of teaching materials are suggested in this curriculum however, ASL teachers are expected to find additional teaching resources such as books, videotapes or websites that fit each unit and assign homework accordingly.

This study presents evidence from a randomized control trial (RCT) in Mongolia on the impact of in-service teacher training and books, both as separate educational inputs and as a package. The study tests for the complementarity of inputs and non-linearity of returns from investment in education as measured by students test scores in five subjects. It takes advantage of a national-scale RCT conducted under the Rural Education and Development project. The results suggest that the provision of books, in addition to teacher training, raises student achievement substantially. However, teacher training and books weakly improve test scores when provided individually. Students whose teachers have received training and whose classrooms have acquired books improved their cumulative score (totaled across five tests) by 34.9 percent of a standard deviation, relative to a control group. Students treated only with books improved their total score by 20.6 percent of a standard deviation relative to a control group of students. On the other hand...

http://dx.doi.org/10.5007/2175-8026.2015v68n1p121This paper discusses how teaching material design can contribute to educate EFL teachers to consider their prospective students’ profile. This professional activity requires the student teachers to take a set of decisions, make choices and explain the reasons for them. The described practices in teacher education are carried at a public university in the southeast of Brazil and Larsen-Freeman's (1983) assertion that teaching is about making choices, which should be informed, is closely considered. The author describes three different contexts of practice and presents student teacher considerations about the experiences. There are challenges and gains in the process of teaching/learning how to design ELT materials, but as has been pointed out by the participants involved in this practice the gains are worth the challenges.

; The objective of this paper is to study online additional language teaching materials aiming at proposing guidelines for the analysis and for the design of pedagogical tasks based on the concept of language use as a form of social action.
